My insurance required six months of medically supervised weight loss (which was actually 7 months because they don't count the first visit!) At first I was impatient and mad (I wanted the surgery, like, yesterday!), but I have learned a lot during the MSWL program (with the Bariatric Coordinator/nurse from my surgeon's practice) and am now actually glad that I had to wait so I could make gradual changes to my diet and ways of doing things. There is a method to their madness, even if it doesn't seem like it now. I have jumped through all of the other necessary "hoops" and my last visit is March 4, and then they will put in for insurance approval!

How long after insurance approval were you scheduled?
Chianti replied to ready2B's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Wow, I am shocked to hear of these fast turn-arounds from insurance companies. I have CHP/STATE Insurance and I'm required to do a 12 month weightloss management program with my Bariatric doctor and lose 10% of my starting body weight which was 34 lbs for me; I am in month 9 and have lost 38 lbs. I sure hope that my insurance company moves as fast as you alls! Encouraging! -
Revision
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to Tina Tiff 1's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
There are therapists that specialize in bariatric therapy. They help the patient manage expectations, emotions, dealing with head hunger, etc... It's actually a really good idea. Many of us on here have used them at one time or another. I have to have a revision and while I'm concerned about the rate of loss, I'll be honest, I mostly just want to feel better. I had my sleeve in May 2022 and I've lost 108 pounds. I still have 80 pounds to go to get to goal. I'm going to keep doing what I'm doing with my diet and working out, and it may take longer than it did now, but I know I'll get there. You will, too. Just keep in mind that stalls happen a lot, 25 pounds lost in 6 weeks in excellent, and just stick religiously to your surgeon's plan and you'll get there in the end. The main goal is better health, anyway. -
I am so deeply sad and frustrated...

I waited and waited a bit too. My insurance has a whole Bariatric department and once I touched base with them it was approved in less than 2 days. Good luck! Sydney -
Need to go back for fill after 3 yr absence and weight gain in Rhode Island
gdf18 replied to chia9876's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
First of all I think you should be very proud that you didn't put all of the weight back on. In the circumstances you describe that's pretty amazing. I doubt I would have done that well. If it were me, I think I'd check with the doctor as you have, and at the same time, I'd work the insurance end. First, to find out where you stand, and second, to see if your new company has other bariatric surgeons who could see you. My advise, gather information and keep your options open. Best of luck-Gwenn -
So it's that time of year where we get poked a lil harder for that weekly insurance premium because our insurance blows and we have to pay more and more each year. My question is, does anyone know of an individual plan with any insurance company that covers lapband. Sad to say, that is my goal to find an Insurance company that covers it and then I can drop my insurance at work! $62.00 a week for insurance is a little steep for not covering weight loss and after months of emailing back and forth to see if they would add the policy, they say no because it will cause our premiums to go higher....HELLOOOO!?!? Any guidance in the direction would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! Ronda

Unhappy with A Lighter Me (ALM) & Dr. Elias Ortiz
groovycath posted a topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I had RNY on 1/6/18. Something happened that caused me to have massive drainage. That night I had 4 things of plasma. Over the next 2 days, I had 4 blood transfusions. I understand my number was 6.5 and really didn't change much. I was kept in the hospital the entire time- never went to hotel. I had drain removed on 1/11 and sent home. The fluid is still coming out the drain hole- i soak about 10 maxi pads a day. The staff at Mi Doctor Hospital was kind and took care of me. The asst. doctor checked in on a regular basis , but I felt he couldn't tell me the whole story. DR. Ortiz came just 3 times, despite my asking to speak with him. I do not feel he was very forthcoming. I still don't understand what happened to make me bleed so much. I have a sister who is a doctor and she is appalled. After 2 transfusions, I would have been back in the OR to fix the bleed. there would have been accountability. I know that I chose to go to Mexico once my new insurance said all bariatric surgery was excluded. What I am so disappointed in is the lack of clear communication by the doctor. I would, therefore, not recommend this company and esp. Dr. Ortiz. I was aware that I would have to pay for "extra" services and I ended up paying close to $1500 for the blood. I do now run the risk of a long recovery (past the 2 weeks I had planned). I also run the risk of infection and the pain of so much leakage. -
Since I've been off work for a few I figured now is the time to make an appt with new Dr since my insurance changed and can't go to the Dr i started with. At about 9:15 am I left a message for the bariatric person. I haven't received a call back. Not sure if I should try again tomorrow or give them more time before I call again. Thoughts? how to get started? what tests to expect?
jaxmommy2012 replied to jaxmommy2012's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
WOw!!! Thank you EVERYONE!! I honestly didn't expect to get responses so quickly. Im sooo fresh to this I haven't even gotten my insurance card in the mail yet. (My husband and I just garried Friday and we sent in our insurance paperwork) However, the enrollment packet did say in plain black and white that it does cover bariatric surgery. Now I understand that's pretty broad so should I still call and see if the sleeve itself is covered? Also, I have SO many other questions...I haven't had a PCP in about 10 years besides my latest which was only for prenatal care. (I had my son in Oct) Also, having just had a child, will that disqualify me? Ive had obesity issues for basically my entire life. Also, My mother has a Lap band and told me Im better off going straight to the Dr. because getting through insurance and getting questions answered is usually pretty hard to do. Will I need previous proof of health issues? I have family history or diabetes and heart problems. Im honestly just trying to feel out the play field first before I even get my hopes up! Im afraid Ill be turned down. And again thank you all so much for your speedy responses. -
Lost my motivation and discipline at 4 months out?!?!
Kindle replied to itstimealready's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
While tracking, getting the right nutrients, excercise, etc, are all important elements to losing weight, the more important issue for any kind of long term success is fixing your head. Are you seeking professional help for your food addiction? You say we are your only support, but really, if you are this uncommitted so soon postop, you need a plan B or surgery will have been a waste of time and money. For those of us that have had WLS, food really isn't the problem. Our heads are the problem and your bariatric surgeon can't do anything to help with that. There are other programs and mental health professionals that deal with addictions and its your responsibility to seek them out, find out WHY you abuse food, and put in the work to learn new habits. -
I have the same requirements with cigna as @SeaShells82 has. But I started mine on jan 22nd. Had my pysch evaluation this past Monday and will have my 2nd nutritional appt next week. So, I have 2 more after that, it'd be Mar and April. The bariatric center will submit paperwork at the last meeting in a April. Depending on how long Cigna takes, I suspect it'll be end of April or early May for my surgery. Start to Finish, about 3-4 months. And congrats on making the decision for better health! ??

What I learned at my Nut Class
Tiffykins replied to Texasmom65's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Best wishes on Monday ! ! ! Most of that plan is super strict, and pretty rigid. I've been drinking caffeine since being about 6 weeks out. I drink soda and have for 18 of my 25 months post-op. All with the go-ahead from my surgeon and nutritionist. Our losing plan was strict, but maintenance is much more lax. The no caffeine rule applied only until I could drink enough clear fluids to compensate for the diuretic effect of caffeine. As for ulcers, the risk for marginal ulcers is slim to none with VSG and/or gastrectomies unless the patients has had a history of ulcerative conditions. This is well documented in studies with VSG and gastrectomy patients that did not have it performed for weight loss. The low risk of ulcers with VSG is the main reason that NSAIDS are allowed with VSG and not with RNY. As for Vitamins, with the calcium citrate and your multi (the multi needs to have iron), do not take the citrate and multi within 2 hours of each other as the calcium counteracts the Iron from being absorbed. I'm glad to hear your nut discourage Gummie vitamins as they are not a complete Vitamin for most adults. I still take chewables, not only because they work for me, but because I kind of just suck up the chalkiness and move on. They go down easily, and well, they have not ever failed me on my labs. I choose to use Celebrate Multi complete (includes Iron), and their Calcium Citrate Plus 500 (which contains Vit D and Magnesium). I have been allowed to remain on this regimen in my pregnancy, and my labs have remained stellar in the pregnancy since the formulation of Celebrate actually beats some of the more potent pre-natals on Iron and Folic Acid counts. You can order samples from Bariatric Advantage, and Celebrate Vitamins to see which ones you might like to use. I personally hated all the BA supplement/vitamins. With the Celebrate, I'm able to take (chew) just 4 chewables per day. I'm further out and only need 1000mg of Citrate, and take 2 of the Multi completes per day. Early out, I had to take 3 of Calciums because I was to take 1200-1500mg per day in the early months because my intake was so low. I use a sublingual B12 2500mcg from WalMart, and pop one under my tonuge 3-4 days a week. -
I have researched VSG thouroughly especially doctors opinions on the procedure and what the future holds. There is a video on YouTube with two of the worlds most famous bariatric surgeons and they are asked what the future holds in regards to WLS. There response was that the band will be obsolete because it is not meant for long term and Sleeve will increase by 40% along with 30% of RNY.. They go into detail about why they think this is the case and I tend to agree with this concept.. As long as you take your supplements and get in your protein then 10-20 years from now we will be here to see the latest WLS gatchet... they are always pioneering old procedures with more advanced. Soon the sleeve will be just as common as insulin, as treatment for obesity.. i'm glad to get in on it now.

My surgeon/ endoscopic person wanted me at 90-120 for ulcer healing, 1/2 9f my goal weight would be approximate a. little less than 90, wasn't getting it P.O. so I am on TPN, working it all out. And how long this all goes, in the hands of the bariatric Gods, the Saints in Heaven, my doctors, my body's reactions. This is. a story📖 still being written📝, a lot of plot twists and I have no clue how it all resolves.💻

Chewables make me so nauseous!
SLF1027 replied to sarahbinalaska's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 6 weeks post op and have tried so many different vitamins. The chewable a from celebrate and bariatric advantage make me vomit. I've tried orange, berry something and vanilla. My doctor moved me to capsules at 2 weeks because of the vomiting and still the same thing! I'm taking celebrate Multi capsules and each time I swallow one I know to grAb my pink puke tray. It's to the point where I skip them most times because I don't want to throw up. My NUT suggested I open and mix them with food, but any way I put them into my body, they come back up. It's so frustrating!!! -
Hi, sorry that you are disappointed. I had a gastric bypass on 3 March 2017 and the surgeon noticed a lot of scar tissue and tissue adhesion during the surgery. The surgery was twice as long as planned. I had to pay for my surgery, (very little is covered by the public health system in New Zealand, and private insurance doesn't cover bariatric surgery here), I'm wondering if I hadn't paid, whether the surgery would have been aborted. I have M.E. and Lupus as well. This journey has turned out to be a lot harder than I mentally prepared myself for.

Anyone get/feel like getting cold feet before surgery
Miss Mac replied to trekker954's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was 62 when I got sleeved on 12/23/2013. My option was dying young like my mother, from an obesity related abdominal aortic aneurysm. I never knew if I was going to wake up from when I went to sleep or not. We have no guarantee of anything, not even the next minute. But I knew that I had to do something. My spine was collapsing under my weight and was probably just months from being wheelchair bound. Fear can immobilize you. It is good to look at all sides of this process, but somewhere along the line, you have to do a "cost / benefit" analysis. Are the risks of dying on the operating table worse than not doing anything and letting your earthly container deteriorate? For me, I just knew that I was waaaaay overdue for a maintenance overhaul and some body work. This is like being at the top of the meanest tallest fastest roller coaster. You got that far, so you may as well stay on for the ride. Don't let your age be the major reason to back off. Hospitals and doctors don't make any money from dead patients. It definitely is in their best interest to take good care of you. No, I did not poop my pants - and it's been two years. Did I regret the surgery? No. I was uncomfortable for a few days, but once I started on purees, I began to feel better.....and I have been better every day since. So, make your lists. One list is any excuse you can think of to back down from your intent to get healthy through bariatric intervention, On the other list, write down the 1, 237 reasons to follow through in this "Last Straw" thread. Well, even more than that, because many people have posted more than one reason. I wish you the best. http://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/219831-what-was-your-final-straw-that-broke-the-camels-back/page-124#entry4047240 -

Good Morning all. I have a lapband but researching a conversion to VS. A friend of mine is going to TJ to have a VS. I am here to support her and find others who are going at the same time. She will have Dr Fernando Garcia as a surgeon and today she will get a date. I am going to Mexico with her. I had plastic surgery done with Dr Carmina Cardenas and she does have a Bariatric surgeon on staff Dr Filipe Garcia. The reason my friend did not pick him is lack of information on here about him. He performed VS on Dr Cardenas and her assistant. Believe or not, they only had 20-30 pounds to loose. They did it for life maintenance. Are we allowed to ask input on centers around us?
KarenLR75 posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I searched for Bariatric Centers near where I live in Fort Worth TX and a place called BETTER WEIGH CENTER came up with a lot of positive google reviews, but their website either isn't very compatible with Chrome web browsers as it acted funny when I tried to sign up for a consultation and when I tried to look at info on the doctors, the page didn't budge. I'd prefer not to go to see Dr. Kim's place....my own reasons. Anyone else know a great surgery team/bariatric center? I'm just wanting to at least dip my toes into the Water and get to an info night... -
Serious Question; Overracting or Right to Be Upset
TheOldMeAgain replied to TheOldMeAgain's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks Kahleen so much. Its not about demanding the attending doctor because I feel like I deserve special treatment. It is unprofessional not to guarantee an opportunity to meet a patient whose body you already operated on! I'm going to forget the disrespect in not meeting him BEFORE surgery. Yes Yes The VA Medical offer it to veterans that've been receiving their primary health care from them for at least a year. Then you can ask your PCP about their MOVE program or he/she may offer u info on it. It's a weight loss program. I did it for 3 months then ask their nutritionist info on their Bariatric Program. She scheduled u for a seminar. Their u get more info and the Bariatric coordinator contact info. One u loose your 15% she schedule a psych eval, once u pass a consult with the surgeon, or for me the PA, lol. -
Insurance Covers , But Employer Excludes?????????????
NurseTeresa replied to krysmaslily's topic in Insurance & Financing
I also have ran into the same problem with United Health Care. I work at a hospital that does the LB and the RNY. However, our insurance has an exclusion. We have appealed to our HR dept with no avail. It seems so unfair that a hospital will do the surgeries but not include them in our policy. We were told in May that it would be included by October. I sat in surgery today watching a RNY be done and was told by the Drs. and the bariatric coordinator that the hospital has decided that it will not be included in October and that so far 60 people have appealed the HR dept. All with no luck. They also stated that it will more then likely not be an inclusion when the insurance is renewed with the next renewal date. So I can feel your pain. If you come up with anything exciting please pass it my way! I will do the same! Good luck to everyone with their insurance endeavors. -
