    I'm Half Way To Goal!

How long have you been sleeved? Did you have hair loss? And What did you do for protein. Sorry for the questions but, I'm really excited about my surgery.
  2. Hi all. I have recently upped my workout to 2x a day because my weight loss has been very slow lately. I was in a car accident in 2001 which left me with some back problems. This limits my exercise options. Currently, I am going to the gym in the morning and riding a stationary bike for 5 miles and at night I walk the indoor track 4-5 miles while my daughter is at practice. I average about 13 mph on the bike and 16-17 minute miles. My calorie intake is between 800-1100 (usually right around 900) and Protein, Water and everything else is on target) According to the calculations I have, I should be burning 230 calories on the bike and between 280-300 walking. My question is with an average burn of around 500 just with my workouts, how the hell is the scale not budging? Do I need to change my intake?

    Illude - NOT a newbie!

I have MANY words coming to mind. Fantastic, amazing, unreal, wonderful, mind-blowing, inspiring, encouraging, etc etc... I am so glad you have come to join us. We are a great group. At times we are heated and can be in big debates (oh, the drama) but when it comes down to nuts and bolts we all really love each other! I hope you really enjoy it here. It is kinda like, no it IS, a whole 'nother family! WELCOME TO THE LBT FAMILY! Congratulations on your loss! I think you have done mahhhhhhhvelous! I hope you stay and post often with advice and tips as well as share in our many discussions of various topics. As for the extra skin I have been pondering.... my mom's surgeon (she was US insurance paid) said that if you complain of rashes and rubbing and chaffing then the insurance is likely to pay for all or a portion of the plastic surgery to remove the skin. If that is not an option, maybe going to Mexico as a self pay? Many people here have done it successfully and are thrilled with the results. I would guess it would take some research but I know you may be able to talk to some who have already done a lot of the legwork involved for research (ie MariposaBella). I am wondering... if you had all of the extra skin removed you would most likely be AT goal, not 33 lbs from it! Congrats again!
  4. I'm so glad you finally were able to get the leak test done and glad you are home now. Gratz on the weight loss. 17 lbs! Sweet. Best of luck on your recovery and continued weight loss.
  5. I agree with what the others said. There is no shame in using the band. That is the point in having it. I dropped 100 pounds in the first year and I would give using the band 80-90% of the credit for the loss. I spent very little time "working at it", beating myself up, or struggling to do it on my own. Fills and staying in the green zone/sweet spot is the key to my success. I say go get a fill and use that band!

    Disappointed

I wouldn't be too disappointed as you're ahead of the one pound per week estimate that my surgeon suggests is typical. Congrats on the weight loss.

Well, welcome Linda! Michelle is a doll, is she not!! We love her alot here. Sounds like you've been through the wringer, so to speak, surgery wise, but you'll fit right in here. Determination seems to go hand in hand with weight loss surgery and those who seek it. There is definitely plenty of that here. We're glad to have you! Please feel free to search the forums for lots and lots of great bandster experience, strength and hope! Again, congrats on a succesfful surgery and good luck with your subesequent journey!
  8. I have asked my doctor's office to run additional thyroid tests when I do my blood work for my yearly physical. In the past my thyroid levels have been low. However the Nurse Practioner was like "oh it's not that bad". I think most doctor's offices don't want to admit a fat person can actually have a thyroid problem. They think we will use it as a crutch. My loss has also slowed to a stop. I am always cold, I have hair loss and am fatigued.

not loosing weight in 2nd month

I'm in my third week of liquid diet (both pre- and post-op) and I have lost about 25 lb in these three weeks. I don't know what will happen for me down the line, but I have seen a lot of folks talking and agonizing about how their wt loss was so great in the first few weeks and then stalled completely for some time after. I wonder if this is the way it works: If you're dropping 10 lbs a week (as can happen on a severely calorie restricted diet) there is no WAY that can be all fat. Most of it is almost certainly water. And water wt loss is NOT permanent wt loss; as soon as you start eating a reasonable, healthy amount of calories again the body replaces it's water stores. So my theory is that when it seems as if wt loss is stalling in the 2nd month or so post-op ( and post the initial severe, unhealthy-to-maintain-in-the-long-term calorie restriction) fat is still really coming off, but it doesn't show up on the scale because it is being replaced by water that your body lost initially, but that it really needs. Does that make sense? Yoo-hoo --- any medical or nutritional types out there who can comment on this?

    This is BS

Wow, I saw crazycatladys post and thought I wrote it. Its amazing what 1 fill can do. I felt exactly the same as you catlady and after my last fill things changed drastically. I finally feel what I should feel. It took 5 months of no weight loss to get to this point. Don't give up. I too had food getting stuck. I think that happens because you need to be a little tighter.
  13. Am hoping to kick up my weight loss with this challenge over the next 6 weeks. I am aiming for at least 20 pounds. It's guided interval training/ cardio classes. I hope I can do it. I was sleeved 10 weeks ago and have lost 36 pounds. It is slowing down a lot already. I have 59 more to go. I hope this will work!
  14. I'm really started to wonder. I love my other half. I honestly do. I think that the shedding lbs are shedding more than I ever expected. I may have to find some therapy. But when I was young I went through a a few honest abusive relationship. The kind I couldn't ignore. That breaking point was fighting off a stabbing for half an hr. It was blamed on his drinking drugs. I feel like perhaps I've ignored verbal emotional cuts from this relationship because it's not what I know abuse feels like. I don't fear for my safety. But the controlling, the attempts to destroy any self esteem left is becoming more obvious every lb I loose. Today I was getting ready to go out with my guys. Put on my cute dress my heels I can fit not ( my feet are loosing weight) make up hair and I was fishing for a compliment... So so stupid like leading with my chin! I said, "I've lost 31 lbs since my pre op diet and I can't even tell." You can see my bobber floating in the water and yes! Bait is grabbed. "No....you can tell." In a low monotone voice. Me thinking yes I'm gonna hear something positive. I smile and say, where? My feet?"Smiling flirty kinda hoping I may be late for my shopping date. And I see it I just gave the opening to be hurt. " no your tummies getting all flabby." Me nodding grabbing my bag not willing to show it hurt. I hear that I condescending laugh I'm use to. " you use to be firm at least now it's kinda gross." I glare " your such an asshole." Walking out I hear. "You gonna have mommy pay for a tummy tuc too?" Now I'm sitting in my car re applying my make up. Wondering is this my hormones due to surgery or is this as bad as I think. I tried to cancel on my guys and that was shot down hard! They have been dying to start my shopping for my first goal wardrobe. And these silly queens just want to make sure it's something they can borrow. I feel like posting this showing too much and reminds me off the hiding behavior in my past relationship... Crap

    Stall

I am 8 weeks out and have lost 40 something pounds, but no weight loss in last week or two. I am frustrated because I had a gastric bypass to lose weight and have been eating the right foods. I am not even on regular foods yet, still on soft stage.

    Personal Trainer

I told my trainer before I had surgery (was working out then) and her first reaction was "No! Do it through exercise and diet!" I told her the surgeon and my doctor agreed this was my best chance for successful weight loss. After that, she acted excited for me about the surgery and worked my butt off leading up to it. When I was cleared to go back after 4 weeks, she wanted to hear all about what I could eat and if I had any restrictions, etc. She also told me to let her know if anything felt like it could be hurting my stomach or abdomen. She is so excited about my weight loss and now acts like a partner in my success. I don't understand why you wouldn't tell someone who you're partnering with to improve your health. However, I don't think it changes their plan for you... unless you're very close out from surgery maybe.
  17. Thank you for responding Molly. My wife had lapband with Dr. Singh and has lost 75 pounds but has hit the wall. She cannot lose anymore and had so many fills Water does not goes down for awhile. She too did lapband because it seemed the safest route to go. One of my friends did the by pass and has lost alot of weight and does not have the band restriction problems. In a way I wish my wife had gone this way. Do you find it cumbersome to maintain a log book of your daily Protein intake in order to get a fill? Or do you find keeping the manadatory log a tool to help with your weight loss. My wife like you enjoys cooking and quite honesty I do not know how you all do it at the holidays. I gained 5 pounds over the holidays and I could not survive without my diet coke. Dr. Singh is quite a character and I enjoy office visits with my wife but visits are not the same with Cathy Carr not being there to check her protein logbook. Hope you like Dr. Singh's humor like we do. I am a member of the Y0-Yo Syndrome. I lose it and then gain it back. I lost about 50 pounds in the last 12 months by watching what I eat just like you all do. Hope all goes well with your weight loss efforts. Stay positive and think of what will be. Not what was! Love to hear more about your experiences with the good Dr. Singh.

    Hurricane Pics

Paula you looked so great in your family picture! Congrats on your great weight loss!! Where exactly (if you don't mind my asking. if you do just tell me! ) are you in Louisiana? We lived in Lake Charles for several years and LOVED it. We went to Holly Beach very often and it's so sad to see the damage. If you're 30 mins north of Holly Beach I"m assuming Lake Charles, Sulphur or Hackberry but I could totally be off too! Several of our good friends in Lake Charles and Sulphur lost almost everything. Homes, businesses, etc. So sad. We're headed down to help one of these days soon. Anyway just wanted to say hi and thanks for posting the pictures.

    Introducing Myself

Welcome Kate! I had that issue too, the one where everyone around had a hard stance against wls. I really only tried hardcore diets once, so they kept telling me that I should keep at it. Thing was, they're all overweight as well. It was mean, but I was forced to ask them how well that was working for them. Also, if you research the stats, the odds are against us losing long term. If I have any advise, its that we're all different. Our reactions to the surgery is different, our surgeons plan are different, our weight loss is different. There are some commonalities, but don't be surprised if something in your journey doesn't match up to everyone else

    Hair loss

What do you mean by excessive? Did I get bald spots? No. It did get quite thin and I was glad to have wavy hair to help it look fuller. I honestly didn't notice how bad it was until recently. Now that the regrowth is 3 inches long, you can see how much thicker the hair close to my scalp is compared with the rest. It now looks like I lost at least 30% of my hair. I have pictures. You wouldn't know by looking at them.

    slow weight loss

Hi, I had my surgery Dec 10, 2003 in Baton Rouge, La. I live in Panama City, Florida. The trip to get a fill is 4-41/2 hour drive, longer now since the hurricane in September destroyed the I - 10 bridge in Pensacola. I have only lost 40lbs. Some days I am happy with this because at least I haven't gained and before the surgery I was steady gaining. I feel I am in more control. I think the reason my loss has been so slow is that it is hard to get the fills I need. I work 60 + hours a week and have 2 kids that are well involved in after school activities and my husband works just as much as I. The only day my Dr. schedules for fills is on Fridays, this is the busiest day of the week for me so I am not able to go as i should. I hope that one day there will be a doctor closer so i won't have the long drive and can get the proper timely fills. I have no regrets for the surgery as i said before I am just glad not to have gained. I get discouraged because people think of this as gastric bypass and I haven't lost what they expect and get alot of grief from that but, there has always been issues with my weight my entire life so, I'm not going to let it bother me anymore. If I only lost 1 lb a month I will be happy that I have not gained.

    Feb 24, 06 (Friday)

The 21st (Tues) was my six weeks follow-up appt with Dr. Cahn. I had lost 39 pounds. Got my first fill (1cc) and went on two days of liquids again. The first day I managed to drink a protein shake with the Slim Fast in it, and also a can of pureed Bean with Bacon soup. The next day I couldnt face the shakes so just had a can of soup. I was so hungry by Thursday that I could have eaten a house, but well.. no, I couldnt! heh Today I've been tired and really fighting the head hunger. It seems that just the idea of being off of the restricted diet has my brain working on overtime. It's almost like someone said, "Ok, youre diet is over. Go do what you want now." Wow, the brain is a crazy thing to deal with. Paul is doing just great too. 38.5 pounds down as of last Sunday. Dropped out of DeFelcha's challenge, but will be joining Heather's on March 1st. Will track the weekly loss there. Have been walking on the treadmill more. Can do about 15 mins, on a really good day I can do 20, at 2.2 - 2.4 mph. Seeing the nutritionist next week for food ideas. Need to eat more, not getting over 700 calories per day. At 50 pounds, we will update our pics.

    This is BS

i struggled with hunger as well in the beginning. i had portion control issues mostly - not really a sweet or junk food person. i had 8 fills with 8.5cc in my 10cc band before i was really able to check the hunger. my meals were MUCH larger then than they are now. i set some rules for myself: every meal measured or weighed / only used a salad plate / never ate after 7pm / made sure i got in 4-5 days worth of exercise. i've read a lot hear about head hunger; i'm not sure that was my issue early on, i felt physical hunger. but i sorta stuck to my personal rules, and before long - it didn't take much to fill me up. my average is 1100-1200 calories a day - maybe your not taking in enough??? when i was under 1000 per day....my weight loss halted. just a thought.
