    Too much protein

    It depends on lab work. The tests can tell the surgeon/dietician how well your body is absorbing the protein. Some people for various medical reasons don't absorb protein well. It can also depend on which weight loss surgery you choose. The malabsorbtive type surgeries can cause you to not absorb protein/vitamins as well as before surgery. That's part of the reason follow up labwork is so vital to your success. So sometimes your protein/vitamins have to be tweaked.

    Thinking about revision

    it's done mostly for sleeve patients (usually for severe GERD that can't be controlled medically). They go back in there and convert it to an RNY (gastric bypass) or DS (duodenal switch). (NOTE: it's not common, but what I mean is, people who get revisions are usually sleeve patients) it's kind of rare to do a revision for a gastric bypass, because they have to reverse the whole thing and then do a sleeve or DS. Only a handful of surgeons in the country are qualified to do that particular surgery. I can't imagine converting from an RNY to a sleeve because the RNY is a more powerful surgery. But I've heard of some RNY patients revising to DS, which is even more powerful than the RNY. But again, it's a very complicated surgery, and very few surgeons do it (in these cases, it's usually done for greater weight loss, usually. I can't think of any medical reasons to do it other than further weight loss)
  4. all those numbers you've cited are just averages. You could lose more or less than those, depending on your level of commitment. for example, the average weight loss with gastric bypass is 70% of the person's excess weight. That doesn't mean you, personally, are going to lose 70% of your excess weight. That's just the average - and with any average, you'll always find people who fall outside of that. We have people on here who only lose 20% of their excess weight- and others who lose 100%. It all comes down to your level of commitment. So I'd take those numbers you've been given or read with a grain of salt. Yes - they'll give you a ballpark idea - but they're only averages, and depending on how hard you work at this, you could do better..or worse...than those averages.
  5. Can somebody please help me….I’m reading so many different things on revision wls and I’m so confused! I know weight- loss is slower, but it’s been coming off pretty good for me so far (55lbs dwn) since Nov.8th. I’m stalling now for the 2nd week! (Frustrating, but expected). Where the confusing part is how much weight I should expect to loose, my doctor told me I should loose a 100lbs, but my research is stating something in the area of about 60-70lbs, but it’s also stating something about my weight-loss from my previous surgery(btw it was the sleeve). So if I’m to understand correctly I’m only going to loose a total of 100lbs ,including my weight-loss from previous wls? I’m so confused…

    March surgery buddies

    Hello everyone checking in. So I had my two week follow up yesterday and incisions look good. That left side still hurts a little mainly when I’m sleeping (still can’t get comfortable). I am not on a purée/soft food diet so I’m excited about that. I’m getting more protein in due to those shakes not really agreeing with me so I love to isolate, protein2 drinks and Gatorade w protein in it. My favorite go to meal right now is buffalo chicken dip puréed so good. I have my month follow up in two weeks and I’ll have blood work done to check on everything and my Dr says I should be on a regular diet by then!!! So far I’ve loss 25lbs so we’re moving along. *I had the sleeve done Can’t wait for hear how everyone else is doing?
  7. So my team green-lit everything at 1 month, including raw veggies, bread and alcohol. Had first raw veggies/salad around 2-3 months cuz until then, there was no room after getting my protein in. Went pretty uneventfully when i did. Bread I didn’t have (by choice) until well after weight loss phase and discovered harder, dryer bread went down much easier and in larger volumes than soft fluffy bread. Still the same now at 3.5 yes post. I do have bread on occasion these days. Regarding alcohol, i had like 2-3 sips of red wine at 3 weeks post. It burned a little and I swear i felt it travelling through my intestines. Next try was at around 2-3 months post with a soju/sake drink and i had one of my worst dumping experience ever. In all i must have had maybe 5 partial drinks in total during weight loss phase, and i got pretty tipsy/drunk each time (though I sobered up surprisingly quickly) Now though, I’m basically an alcoholic (at least according to the North American measure of it. Apparently women who consume >= 7 drinks per week are alcoholics. Soooo… *raises hand* 🤷🏻‍♀️ And yep, i smoke too (at least right now i am, i’ve been quitting and un-quitting for the last 2 years) MANDATORY DISCLAIMER: i am in no way advocating what i do for anyone else. You know your own limits and can choose as an autonomous adult whether you choose to stay within these limits or beyond them. …and…don’t judge me! Good Luck! ❤️

    < 3 Weeks Until Surgery

    I think most pre-ops and early post-ops worry about the hair loss - but I think most of us long-timers will tell you that it's just a blip on the screen in the grand scheme of things. It's temporary, and most people don't lose enough for others to notice (some do, of course - but most don't). I lost a little - but I'm sure no one else noticed. there's really nothing you can do about it. If it's gonna happen, it's gonna happen (and not everyone loses hair, so there's that). Some people say biotin helps, others say it doesn't do a darn thing. I did buy some but didn't take it consistently. I wouldn't sweat it, though. It may not even be noticeable, and it'll all grow back. You can always get it cut short or wear it up or wear scarves or something if it's noticeable. I know I was really freaked out about the thought, but it really wasn't bad - and I've pretty much forgotten about it at this point. Losing that 200 lbs (for me) was WELL worth the cost of any temporary hair loss. oh - the best thing you can do is keep on top of your supplements and protein requirements. That should keep it from getting any worse than it will otherwise.
  9. Omg. In this country people drink alcohol at pretty much every meal and that's it. My program: after the first month, eat what you want but watch out for steak. There are no dietary restrictions at all: eat healthy, high quality foods. Chew well. Don't drink with or 30 minutes after your meal. My experience: I still do badly with hard things that cannot be completely chewed like some fruit skins (blueberry, apple). I haven't tried some things like bread because I either I haven't has the chance or don't believe certain foods are compatible with healthy fat loss. I ate a little pasta and it was fine.
  10. I am - not "may be", am - biased, but there's no way MGB won't overtake RNY at some point. Higher weight loss, fewer complications, simpler surgery, easily revisable and reversible in study after study over a 25 year period.
  11. lots of people have done that revision. The thing is, like with VSG, you're going to have to change your habits and follow the program to lose the weight. The surgery will only take you so far. I lost a truckload of weight, but I worked really hard at it. And yes, the revision should at minimum improve, and will likely eradicate, the GERD. btw - weight loss is never as strong or quick with revisions as it is with virgin surgeries, but that said, there are people who've been very successful with revisions. If you are committed, you'll get there.
  12. I would like to think MGB would be an option, the surgeon is at Duke. With that said, he didn't mention it as an option. When I think 'mini,' I would assume that wouldn't be better for weight loss but I honestly don't know.
  13. Is MGB an option for you at that practice? The weight loss approaches DS, with fewer side effects, and there's a proven great effect with VSG-->MGB revisions. The DS revision wouldn't do anything for your reflux, so that'd be on borrowed time anyway. The MGB could solve it.

    Congratulations to you! Best wishes as you continue! I'm finding my 7th month has really slowed down with the weight loss, but I expected that. I figure it might take 6 more months to get the remaining pounds off -- unless I can find an additional hour to increase exercise!🏋️‍🚵‍♀️🤸‍♂️🤽‍♀️
  15. I'm not excited because I know I'd get better weight loss with DS than with RNY. I'm shallow I guess but really wanted to lose the weight. He told me DS was an option if I only wanted weight loss but RNY would alleviate the acid reflux. I'm likely going to get the RNY but was hoping someone here could tell me that weight loss is also good with this procedure.
  16. I had VSG in November 2016. I never really lost the weight I had hoped (lost about 30 pounds). I'm sure a lot of it has to do with my choices because I really want to get the extra weight off. I recently met with my surgeon to discuss my options and after having a Bravo Endoscopy, we learned I have extremely bad acid reflux (I didn't need a procedure to learn that but whatever). He also stated that I have a hiatal hernia. Today he advised me to undergo gastric bypass which will completely eradicate the reflux. I was hoping to go in for a duodenal switch but he stated that wasn't a good option for me. Does anyone have any experience on vsg to rny with great weight loss results?
  17. This has opened a whole pile of repressed memories and I am having trouble writing about it. This is my 3rd go at it. I have had a lot of therapy because of my mothers idea of fatness, whilst feeding me the most unhealthy food and telling me to empty my plate or I would get it every meal till it was finished. It happened. The day before she died of cancer, weighing about 50 pounds, she admitted that she had finally got to her perfect size ! I am the person who always tells friends and random strangers that their clothes, shoes, hair, and make up are fabulous . This is because of the nasty remarks people have said to me. A kind remark does wonders to some ones ego and I can not understand why a person would want to be so cruel and say something so negative. It has made people Anorexic or Bulimic or in some cases kill themselves. I would never want that on my conscience.

The post go back 20 years and are full of great information and will give you a boost if you need it. 1. Protein shakes - Everybody says don't buy too many of one variety as your tastes will change after surgery. 2. Hair loss - My hair loss has just begun, it worries me a little but its nothing a short hair cut will not solve . Realistically, there is no data if anything extra helps

    It sounds like you're well prepared for your first stage of your post op diet. The only other supplement that some people take for hair health is biotin, that I know of at least. I have no experience with pregnancy after weight loss surgery. I had my son many moons ago when I was at a normal weight, lol. I'm sure you're going to do fabulous on surgery day and thereafter! Just take it day by day and focus on your weight loss and 18 months will sail by! Best wishes!

    the hair loss is only temporary. So dont stress on it. I dont want to loose my hair either but i have some hats just incase lol Looks like you are on a 2 week liquid diet too. I just got told today that mine will be 2 weeks too. But they provided the shakes. Tho i am gonna get others too. I also bought a little magic bullet blender thing for the shakes.

    having an issue with cravings

    First of all, cravings are completely normal. We all want certain foods at certain times because of their taste, nostalgia, or other emotional drivers. That being said, if you feel compelled to "cheat" to satisfy a craving, you might want to sit down and really think about WHY you are craving that food? What emotions, situations, or other factors are driving those feelings and how can you cope with them other than giving in or finding a substitute? The reality is, your surgeon has specific post-op phases/stages for a reason - I promise its not arbitrary. And deviating from it could cause any number of complications, discomfort, etc. This is the really hard part of weight loss surgery - learning to heal our relationship with food so that we are free from diets and cheat meals and trying to rationalize our food choices. If necessary, get a bariatric/eating disorder counselor to help you work through some of this stuff and gain new coping mechanisms. But, long answer short, no you should not given in. Not only because it could make you sick, but because it will perpetuate the cycle you had surgery to break. We are rooting for you.
  22. Hi everyone, I am 20 days from surgery (4/18) and I am nervous and excited. I feel prepared but at the same time I feel like I don't know what I am doing. My hospital hasn't been the easiest to work with as far as providing information on what to expect so I have been doing a lot of my own research. It almost feels like my doctors put everyone in the same camp and don't take each person as an individual which is highly annoying for a "Type A"/Planner like myself. I start a full pre-op liquid diet on 4/4 to help shrink my liver and jump-start weight loss before surgery. I am fully stocked up on Fairlife protein shakes (every flavor except coffee) and have unflavored protein powder and collagen to add to soups. What other options should I explore or do you have any recommendations for protein shakes to try? I am fairly nervous about my hair thinning or losing my hair - does anyone have experience with this or prevented this from happening? I started taking collagen about 3 months ago and noticed it has helped strengthen my nails and added hair growth but I am worried this won't be enough in the long run. Any advice is appreciated! Does anyone have any advice on pregnancy after DS? I am mainly going through this process to increase my chances of having children - my husband and I have suffered two miscarriages and I am being told by my OB/GYN that there's nothing they will do for me until I am at a better weight. I am fully committed as I want to start a family but waiting an additional 12-18 months after waiting this long seems like a lifetime. I want to be as prepared as possible for any hurdles or issues we may encounter - thanks in advance! That's a little about me - tell me about you!     What do you guys think of this video?

    according to statistics, only about 10-15% of bariatric patients make it to a normal BMI range, so that means only a small percentage of us would be doing weight (or other resistance) training, if we go by his advice. Resistance training is pretty important throughout life, especially as we age. So I'd have to say I don't agree with Dr. V there. I do agree that food intake is 90% of weight loss, though. Exercise can make a little difference, but not as much as most people think. It's basically good for overall health and building lean muscle, which is, of course, desirable.

  25. Dr.V, another bariatric specialist on YT has many such videos and here he suggests working on getting "lean muscle mass" once you hit the goal and in the normal BMI range. Do you agree with his take? I know many here start their weight training quite early during their weight loss phase. So what's your opinion on his take?
