  1. Hi all! Always looking for local connections! I live in Arlington but travel! Had VSG 1/10/11, HW 266 SW 260 CW 148 and I'm 5'. I'm 54, live w partner of 34 years (what?!?!) and two kitties. Had surgery at Sibley Hospital in DC and highly recommend them. Would love to meet up for coffee and convo!! Let's do it!!!! Ann
  2. My surgery is in 6 days (10/31), so last night I began writing a "Letter to Me" as suggested by my doctor. (Obviously, the purpose is to record the reasons you decided on WLS in case you later have second thoughts or need a bit of motivation to stay on track.) Writing this letter led me to think about my fears and what I kept returning to was my fear of gaining the weight back. I'm not afraid of the surgery, the pain, or even the drastic changes required in lifestyle and eating choices. I'm not even afraid of not losing weight. I know I'll be successful because I've done it so many times before. What I'm afraid of (we're talking "heart beating out of your chest type fear"), is that I'll gain it all back. (This is certainly exacerbated by the fact that I'm self-pay and having the surgery in the US.) I'm guessing that I speak for most everyone in their 50's when I say that we've spent much of the past 40 years on one diet or another. And I'm guessing that most of us have had tremendous successes. Those successes are fabulous until they're followed by the inevitable regain, which of course, is followed by doubts and the self-loathing. I have every intention of following my doctor's orders to a "T", I am optimistic, and frankly excited about this surgery; however, if I'm being truly honest with myself, I'd have to say that in most of my prior weight loss efforts, I had those same feelings. Every single time I was 100% certain that THIS TIME I WILL BE SUCCESSFUL! Those of you that have fought this battle and are winning (I know it will never be truly "won" and the fight will continue the rest of our lives), what made this experience different? Why did this one succeed when the myriad of other attempts failed? What advice do you have for me? I truly welcome your comments and advice. Many thanks,

    2 weeks post op HELP

Hi Christina! 19 lbs is great! I'm 3 weeks post op and have to say that i was very similar last week losing 20 lbs and then nothing. Of course we eat almost nothing for those 2 weeks after surgery so weight is bound to come off. After a lot of reading here, i'm probably not getting enough calories in during the course of the day. I know i wasn't getting enough Protein, but the calories were 700 - 750 or day and that maybe my body was going into store mode instead of shed mode. OOPS. So i kicked up some calories 2 days ago to about 900-1000 (Still on mushies so i'm experimenting with meals to increase a bit yet til i'm on soft food by end of the week) and i've noticed a difference just in my energy level right there. The biggest change to my diet was adding in canned chicken & tuna, BLENDED to mush with light mayo. Gives me about 140 calories plus 15 grams of protein in 2 ozs or so. I also found that after adding some food the BM's improved greatly between these two weeks & the gas is all gone now. Hang in there, you'll be moving on to the next food group soon! It did get better for me & i'm only a week ahead!!!
  4. I am 2 weeks post op. Down 19 pounds. I am not eating enough and I am exercising everyday. I feel tired and sluggish. Also lately, I was having trouble with BM so I took mucilax. Now I feel a slight burning sensation in my chest. Like heartburn but not as bad. I am getting frustrated. The scale has not moved in over a week, I am sluggish AND now my stomach feels irritated. Help
  5. everyone leaves the hospital weighing more than they did when they went in because of all the IV fluids (which I believe contain sodium, which makes retention even worse!). I've heard of people "gaining" 10 or more lbs, in fact. It can take up to a week for them to work their way out of your system. You're probably fine. Even in phase 2, you're not taking in *nearly* enough calories to maintain your current weight - I'm sure it's water.
  6. Hi, my name is Sara and I am currently waiting for approval from my insurance company to have the vsg. I had to do a 24 week weightloss program through the surgeons office which I completed in July and I lost 48 pounds. I have not been doing so well since. I have pretty much maintained until a couple weeks ago when we went on vacation and I gained a good 10 pounds. I have not weighed since so I am hoping I lost some of that but I still am struggling with getting back on track. I am in Michigan and I plan on having my surgery with Dr. Kemmeter of Grand Health Partners in Grand Rapids, Michigan. I would love to hear from anyone who has had Dr. Kemmeter or anyone who has had their surgery through this office. It would be nice to have some support. I do plan on going into some of the surgical support groups prior to having surgery as well just to hear others stories. Thanks All! Sara

Birth of baby to Lap Band

i had my daughter feb 19 and am having this done on oct 4. i will let you know next week if it were something i think i could have dealt w/ right after giving birth. i had to have a c-section so there was the recovery from that as well.
  8. I was sleeved on 10/2/2018 and am down 47lbs. I feel like my progress is slow but steady. I’m actually in the 250’s for the first time in YEARS! My hubby and I have a Vegas trip planned in January and my gift to myself if I’m under 250 is to go horseback riding for the first time ever. I’ve never been under the maximum weight in my adult life so I’ve always avoided doing it. I know it will be cold but I don’t care. My butt will be freezing doing something I’ve always wanted to do. I’m so excited. Now to continue this hard work. I’m about 60ish lbs from where I think I want to be, which is under 200, and it finally feels like a realistic goal! Here’s to being sexy in Vegas. To all my fellow sleevers “We’ve got this”! HW - 306 SW - 298 CW - 259 GW - none (just to be under 200) Height - 5’8 1/2

    And now there is one!

I call tomorrow for my official surgery date but I will be getting mine done on/around December 19...I'm just under 2 months away! After 10+years of aiming to get this surgery (and failing every diet to kingdom come during that time) it feels surreal! I can't believe this is finally happening!

Lap Band Post Op Day 8

Yes I'm now 10 days out and only fighting "head hunger". I now truly understand what that means. I have not really had any physical hunger yet. I really hope it stays that way!! Today is my first post op. I'm down 13 pounds.

  12. So I just had my 1st fill a few hours ago, and it feels like someone is sitting on my chest. When my doc first 'filled' me, I immediatly felt pressure in my chest, and I told him. He told me that it was normal and some people feel that. I am a paranoia freak, and wasnt satisfied with that answer. So then I sit up and drink some Water. Everything goes down fine and stays there. But I still have that pressure feeling in my chest, and I tell the doc again about it. So then he says maybe he put too much in and has me lie down again and takes some Fluid out. (he put in 4, and took out 1) I drink some more water, everthing still stays down. Is this feeling in my chest 'normal'? I have to drive over an hour to get to the docs office and am REALLY hoping that I dont have to make another trip, and have it be nothing. Im just really disappointed in this doctors office. In the beginning I thought it would be great because I heard some good reviews, the doctor calls you to check on you and you have his cell number in case you need anything. But really, I havent gotten any soild advice. Everything I've learned has been from fellow banded patients on this site. Today I had to ask him how much he put in and how much he took out. I asked how much could the band hold, he said "14" but didnt seem to sure about it...And during my visit today, his cell rang...AND HE ANSWERED IT!!! I was a little irritated. Not to mention I walk into the EMPTY waiting room, but have to wait an HOUR before I get called to see the doctor?? And the girls at the front desk had walked into a back room (their break room maybe?) I am a cash patient and paid $13,000.00 for this surgery, and honestly I feel jipped with this whole thing. Ugh!! I asked when I should come back, how many weeks. He tells me whenever I start feeling like I need a fill. ...........ummm ok? I have heard from people on this site that its normally 4 weeks you go back after your first fill, and that sometimes you need that long to see how the fill is working for you. WHY is my doctor not telling me these things?!? AND!...(yes there's and "AND") I got weighed while there and it said that I have only lost 4 1/2 lbs. My scale at home that I weighed myself on pre-surgery and everyday since has said I have lost close to 10 (2lbs being before I started my pre-surgery diet). Talk about frustration at the scales!! So I hope anyone reading this can remember what my question was before I starting on my rant session and maybe give me some insight to this chest pressure feeling.

Quick update on my VG band.

I am just angry because most of you believe that health care standards are same in other countries. Doctors and health personel are well educated, courteous, helpfull. Just no. Here in Romania, Health care system is under state control, and free, but docs are just like ordinary government employees. Just like a post office clerk. They do not get post education. State health care is free, but you have to wait in lines to get basic care. Basically, state health care system is in ruins. Staff and doctors are in general undereducated, old , underpaid, the hospitals and equipments are old, and dirty.Corruption is going everywhere. Good doctors and health care personel move to other european countries. My doc is the chief of the surgery unit, but he does not have an office of his own. We always talk in corridors, there are maybe 10 doctors packed up in one single room. They are like an ordinary government employee. How can you expect good health care from them. I have done the surgery there, because the doc is the most experienced in this field in Romania. He has done over200 lapbands. but his staff is terrible, and unprofessional. No pre-post information. You are mostly on your own. He gets his big money from patients (he is a public employee) after the surgery, five hundred dollars in packet, never wants to get bothered after that. So I had to keep up with his ego. He just doent like too many fills. He told me I should come after 6 months, how can I argue with him. I should wait another 6 months for the next fill, for a super sized VG band. This is unethical, unprofessional, and irresponsible behaviour on his part. I am pretty sure he use the same needle for many fills, because the state doesnt pay for the huber needle, they do not have a budget for that. He just asked extra money for that. I know there are some private clinics doing the same procedure, but I do not believe the docs are as well experienced. The hospital had the fluoro unit, thanks god, I could check the health of the system. I have seen the contrast agent (omnipaque) flowing, through the tube to the band. I was really happy because I was also worried that when I did my own fill, I could puncture my port because I used some force to inject that I needn't to, and used a core needle. Anyway, next time I will bother him a lot so that he will accept another fill, I hope so. Money might talk. Dorin

    can't take pills anymore!

Have you tried cutting your pill in half or thirds? I have always had a hard time taking pills even before being banded. You can pick up a decent pill cutter for under $10 from CVS or Walgreens. I cut my pills in half and take them with something soft, like SF pudding or SF Jello, its a mental thing for me. I can not swallow pills unless I am really deperate without having something soft to swallow with. You may have irritated your stomach with the throwing up, try sticking to liquid for a few days. 16. Hello All- I had my first fill today 4.5 cc's, I believe- I think they said I had the 11 size band or something- Anyway- it was a piece of cake---I wish it was really cake! No- it was quick and painless- I was anxious over nothing! So- we'll see how the next few days go. I need to update my ticker....down 25 lbs so far- 10 pre-op and 15 post-op.

    Home and banded!

Well, I'm back in the states and banded. I had my surgery 2 days ago(8/19) with Dr. Ortiz in Tijuana. There were 5 of us that day, although one lady was actually getting a hernia fixed and a new band placed. Everyone was extremely nice and professional and although there was a small language barrier with a few nurses, everything went wonderfully. I can't say enough about Dr.Ortiz and the others. I have never been given a Dr.'s home and cell phone number with adamant directions to call if anything bothered me or seemed wrong. I work in health care here in the states and I have to say that they exceeded my expectations. Now if only my pain would go away! It's not too bad, just limiting, and I can't wait to become healed so I can really start working this band!:Bunny:Bunny:Bunny Ness

Gall bladder has got to go....

I was banded in July 05 and I just had my gall bladder out last week. I wanted it taken out at the same time but the doctor said no, there were no stones and he wouldn't take it out. So almost 7 months later I had to have a second surgery. The pain I was feeling preband was in fact my gall bladder, not stones but it wasn't functioning properly. I wish I could have had them at the same time, the second surgery was a bit harder then my banding. I am just starting to feel like myself again, 10 days later. After my band I was up and about within a few days, by day 5 I felt like a million bucks. Be glad that they are doing both together, that sounds much easier then 2 surgeries back to back. ~Mandy
  19. Hi , am following the milk and yogurt liver shrinkage diet .It's 8-10 no fat diet yogurts (60 cals each ) and 1 pint of semi skimmed milk shakes .Has anyone else done this or is doing it now ? thanks x
  20. you can do this ! i was home in 5 hrs, rested for 3 days and by day 3 i was so bored i went out and did a little lite Christmas shopping. by day 7 i was back at work ! The surgery itself was a breeze, it just felt like a bad pulled muscle on my left side for 10 days. Dont forget your chapstick and a big bottle of water, you'll need them after surgery for " cottonmouth." Good luck !
  21. Hi all - I am two weeks out from surgery. I felt great after surgery for a couple of days until I developed a hernia from pushing my 70 pound lab off my lap! Regardless, I have absolutely no sense of fullness. Not even any of the "subtle" ones. I have experimented with some mushy foods (chicken, carrots) and those didn't make me feel full despite eating half a cup of them. Also nothing I've eaten makes me sick - although I haven't had too wide a variety. I am super scared I will have to rely solely on my "willpower" to continue losing weight after the first few weeks. I have lost all the Fluid weight I gained in both surgeries (bypass and hernia) and 10 more. If I don't have any full sensation and no dumping syndrome, I'm not sure this will end up working very well for me. Has anyone else had this? Did it resolve? I am very worried about this! Sent from my SM-G900V using the BariatricPal App
  22. So, I know people will have different answers to this. i am curious what different people did, or experienced with relation to diet and activity and work. I am pre-op, sleeve to be done late Oct or early Nov. I'm looking for your post-op experience, in weeks, like maybe.... week 1 liquids--felt tired but ok, not hungry Week 2 went back to work on day 9 after surgery Week 2-4 purees and liquid --craving real food but not truly hungry week 4-5---still working, but more tired than I thought I'd be.... week 5 ---started solids, 5-6 tablespoons So, if you would, please give me your simplified first 6-8-10 weeks, and what was going on for you in terms of post-op foods, work activity, hunger, feelings, whatever you'd like to share. I just get overwhelmed by the massive amount of info online, I am readin and watching videos (Dr Weiner on You tube!!!) But, I'd love to see some real-live-post-op VSG people break it down in a really basic form. Thanks!!
  23. After 10 days I find myself very easily nauseous. I also have very little stamina. It's hard to get these walks in. I am SO thirsty that all I crave is Water. The last few days have been OK but still nauseous every day. Today is particularly bad because I also had a migraine. UGH! Anyone else having nausea and stamina issues this far out?
  24. First and foremost- congratulations- You have lost about 10 lbs per month and that is no small task. Well done! Now, you may want to take a good hard look at what you are eating. It's not what you should it, it's what you are eating. do you have any idea how many calories and how much protein you are getting? Are you drinking at least 64 ounces of fluid? Are you exercising? Are you eating a little more now than the first 3+ months? all this needs to get taken into consideration. Send me an email with a days food journal and let's see what you're choices are like. I'd love to help you, but them comes form interaction between us, not just me telling you what you "should" be eating...Hope this makes some sense.
  25. So I don't notice the difference most of the time until I put on clothes that no longer fit. However when I look in the mirror I still look at myself and see the fat girl. I am a nurse and have had to finally go get new scrubs because the old ones were falling off me. When I did this I thought I only went down one size and no I went down two. I am 4 months and a week post op. i have lost 72 pounds and so close to being in the 100 mark. I have struggled at times with eating. I have not had any trouble eating anything. Nothing makes me sick to my stomach or har the runs. Sometimes I wonder of this is all really true and if they really did the surgery. And then I take the one bite to many and it hurts. At that point I know it is really sleeved. I dance hula and have fr about a year. I danced it at 281 pounds and am still doing it now at 210. We had a big performance this past weekend and I really noticed for the first time I am skinner. I have to day this is definitely a journey I thought I was ready for but realized that it has so many challenges that I wasn't expecting. Or example gettin my water In when I'm working out or dancing and am completely thirsty and water is not helping it. So some things I have learned. • don't overeat at any time it hurts real bad • work out and it helps with the skin mine is going in not fast but it is. • don't do it the wrong way. Follow your surgeons plans and diet they have to for a reason. I have a friend that did the sleeve and then took diet pills to loose it faster and didn't work out. But followed the diet and lost 150 pounds in 10 month but has a ton of excess skin. • no matter what you see the people around you notice even if they don't say anything. • the best feeling is know that this saved the rest of your life. • when you put on clothes 2 sizes smaller you will feel amazing. Especially when you haven't been that size in years. I hope this helps some one. I read a lot of post on here and don't respond a lot but I have gotten a lot of positive feelings form them. And know that I have done the right thing and that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Thanks for taking the time to read this. One year ago at a performance This past Saturday
