What is your on the Go Protein?
GreenTealael replied to zbradburn's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I keep premier shakes handy as well as string cheese, yogurt and nuts. Just found Parmesan crisps and they are amazing. If I'm somewhere that no good options exist I try to search for a GNC and but a snack there -
What is your on the Go Protein?
orionburn replied to zbradburn's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Plain chicken gets boring, but I eat a ton of chicken salad. I add a variety of things to it like dried cranberries, walnuts or pecans, celery, and I use Greek yogurt rather than mayo. My on the go quick-fix is a small whole grain/wheat tortilla with chicken salad. I usually end up tossing the last bit of tortilla away (and probably not an option for you at this point). Otherwise beef jerky and nuts are a go to while out on the road. I'll also keep a scoop of protein powder in a shaker bottle and add cold water when needed. Another good option are the flavored tuna packets from Starkist. They are about the perfect serving size, low on cals/carbs and pack a good shot of protein. I always kept a few of those in the pantry or at work. Eating tuna by itself isn't the greatest thing in the world but the flavored packs are good. -
No To Low Cooking Ideas for Real Foods (Stage 4) Post Op
awilli9634 replied to FluffyChix's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
As a single male in his mid 20's this thread screams my name. I do very little cooking and my meal prep takes me about 20 mintues for the week. Here's an example of my daily menu. Breakfast - oikos triple zero yogurt 1st snack - 1oz roasted peanuts Lunch - 3oz shredded chicken with 1 oz of shredded cheese (I buy a rotisserie chicken and shred it for the week) 2nd snack - 2 hard boiled eggs (usually can only eat the whites) Dinner - 3oz meatballs with 1oz cheese 3rd snack - 1 individual sized smart pop popcorn bag I do want to start adding more greens and fiber into this routine but it has worked out well so far. -

I got jello, premier protein, brotha, pudding and Greek yogurt. Sent from my SM-N950U using BariatricPal mobile app -
I was so glad to see this post because foods like yogurt and cottage cheese that I used to love taste off to me. I was wondering if this was normal. I'm still in the soft food phase so am still eating a lot of soup. I'm so curious to know why my tastebuds have turned against me.

Yogurt yes, Mostly Greek yogurt is recommended because of the protein count. Fro-Yo, I'm not sure when you can add that

I just got done working out for an hour and a half. Burnt 933 calories. I did a little stomach workout as well. I only had a cheese stick and yogurt for breakfast. I drank two 16.9 oz waters. I had a cheese stick for a late lunch (not hungry) and now I feel kinda sickish.

Work Lunch ideas?
mylighthouse replied to Cindy757's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Egg salad, hard boiled eggs, yogurt, cottage cheese with almonds, few blueberries thrown in. Chicken salad made with greek yogurt or mayo, homemade cheese/parm crisps if you need a crunchy snack. Homemade chili, so many meats/veggie combinations, stir frys. Hummus with cheese crsps. Black bean and feta salad with celery, red pepper and balsamic vinegrette dressing. Nuts, especially almonds (for snacking). Don't know what your work hours are like, or what your eating schedule is like. I have been on about 6 very small meals a day since the beginning. It has worked really well for me. If you are on that type of eating schedule as well, then plan on taking plenty of appropriate small meals with you. You certainly don't want to be stuck at work without enough good food to get you through the day... it will help you stay on plan. -

What is even normal?
jenondaway replied to Adams2dc's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I feel your pain. I had my first scrambled egg yesterday and was pretty much in misery most of the day. I didn't overcook the egg so it was still moist, I ate it slowly and chewed like no one's business. I got very full very fast and couldn't even finish it. After eating I felt as if I had gravel churning in my little stomach (I had VSG). I had been craving eggs since the pre-op liquid diet and so looked forward to this day but it wasn't all I had hoped for. Today I'm sticking to smoother things, like greek yogurt with some unflavored protein powder and it's going much better and have been doing pretty good getting my liquids in. -
February bypass buddies?
Batcap replied to RunningLibrarian's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
So I'm 19 days post surgery & everything is going pretty well. I've lost 31 pounds and for the first time in a long time I'm below 300 pounds. I'm in puree phase and since I'm a fan of cottage cheese and yogurt I'm doing alright. It is bizarre not being hungry I haven't felt the physical sensation of being hungry since surgery. My only complaint is the urgency when it comes to the bathroom, I wish they would have warned us about that in our classes, I mean we were in there for 12 weeks you'd thing they could toss in that everything going in is liquid so it's going to come out as liquid and if you're not careful you're going to be ruining some drawers. Glad everyone is doing well and thoughts and prayers for your recoveries and pending surgeries, Keep it up guys! -
How do you keep from regaining weight and stretching stomach?
orionburn replied to ElseeG's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Because any diet (IMO) is basically a short term strategy. Obviously WLS is not a short term thing. It’s a life time decision and commitment and the surgery is still a tool. For me my main issue was portion control so the sleeve made sense to me. Can I still graze all day if I choose to? Yes. But that’s what it boils down to – I’m choosing whether I want to eat constantly or not. My doc wants his patients on 3 meals a day with no snacks. He didn't even want me doing 3 meals and a protein shake. In the early months there was simply no way I could eat enough to cover my protein needs over the course of 3 meals. I've kind of gone back the basics this week. Eating smaller portions and more of them throughout the day. The things I'm eating are good options, though, such as chicken salad, yogurt, cottage cheese, etc. You can't look at it as being a diet. It truly is a lifestyle change. So what do I mean by that? Well for me that meant giving up lots and lots of old habits. It was a daily stop by the gas station for my giant Diet Mt Dew and some pretzels or granola bar. A few times here and there grabbing fast food because I had errands to do after work and wouldn't be home for hours. Now I only stop by the gas station if I actually need to eat because I'm away from home. Instead of getting junk food now I get some beef jerky and maybe some peanuts. And yes, it's a battle some times to avoid drifting into the other sections and getting something I shouldn't. That's the lifestyle change. I went through all of this for a reason and I don't want to throw all the benefits away. In my early 20s I got up to 395lbs. It scared me to know how close I was to being 400lbs. Started going to the gym and started to lose some weight. Then I lived at the gym for the next year or two and got down to 265lbs. And then some nerve problems kept me away from the gym and the weight came back on. Then I quit smoking and added some more weight. Then I got a desk job. So here I was years later back up to 355lbs and feeling miserable. I felt out of options and that's why I went with surgery and glad I did. It isn't for everyone and God knows there are thousands and thousands of people out there that have lost weight by dieting alone. It's good that you're asking these questions. Honestly it's the ones that think they're going to wake up with a smaller stomach after srugery and all their food issues and addictions magically go away. -

How do you keep from regaining weight and stretching stomach?
ElseeG replied to ElseeG's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Thanks, All. Regaining is my new fear. I’m not a daytime grazer. My problem area is when I walk in the door from work. Instead of sitting down for an actual meal, I pick and pick and pick. I know I need to stop that. I’m going to try having a late afternoon snack like a yogurt or protein bar to keep from being so hungry when I walk in the door. I agree...it’s so easy to say, “I’ll get back on track tomorrow.” Another habit to stop. And the list continues...! -
Ok, I hear you and understand the problem. Thanks so much for entrusting us with your personal information. So here's my 2 cents. You know that most of us are big losers. We can lose like nobody's beeswax. But you also know that most or all of us have been seriously poor maintainers post weight loss. We have metabolic resistance like crazy and our bodies want us to get fat again. So we deal with a metabolic handycap in some respects. So in my mind, there is no question that you (and I) need the surgical intervention. No more rationalization from me for me. I accepted it and did "the almost max" by getting RNY rather than sleeve. So now let's deal with the executive functioning thing. I'm pretty sure that even at 6'4" you have been spending a crap ton of money on fast food delivery/drive thrus or pre-packaged amazeballs crap from the grocery right? So ya have difficulty cooking. One way to address this would be to get your surgeon right now, to put you onboard with an occupational therapy program that teaches life skills (of which cooking would be a main one for you). There are all kinds of short cuts. And the good news is that cooking doesn't really require a recipe unless it's a baked goods thing--then it's as much chemistry as it is about cooking. I'm a cook and have cooked since I was 6 years old--even professionally. I'm used to preparing and creating elaborate meals and recipes. But what do I do when I'm in "Beast Mode" for weight loss? I Occums Razor the hell out of sh*t. I keep it simple. Most suppers pre-surgery were 3-4oz of grilled or roasted lean meat, and a veg, and some kind of salad. Lunches were either a quick meat/cheese rollup with grape tomatoes, baby carrots or fruit, and easy peasy breakfasts of either protein drinks, my cottage cheese yogurt mess, or some kind of thrown together egg scramble. Now days, they have pre-cooked roasted meats that are "relatively clean". There are all kinds of steamer bags of veg in frozen foods and prechopped ingredients both frozen and in the fridge section. Salads come in a box now! There are low fat and zero cal dressings that are not bad. Even avocados come peeled and sliced! Eggs come boiled and peeled now. The whole super market is filled with convenience foods--some fit beautifully into our world. So you don't technically HAVE to cook, in order to eat in a manner that will support your new tool. But there's also a Plan B. Meal delivery services! Many can accomodate special dietary needs. You just order online and they are systematically delivered each week. I would hazard that these meal services would represent a savings over your former crap filled diet of old that got you to the 366lb ball. So if it were me, I'd spend my time as you prepare for surgery and do the 2-3 week liquid diet portion after surgery, planning on how you will procure your new "diet" food that is really more of a lifestyle than a diet. See what meal services exist in your area and what the costs are and if it will fit within your food budget. Remember, you will be eating such small amounts that each meal will represent 2-3 servings for your new anatomy--so there will be savings for you there! And guess what? No cooking involved other than nuking to rewarm!!! Score! You can do this, Matt. I will help you as much as I can with meal plans, for free if that will help you? I can help with shopping lists, meal plans, etc!

Hello all, I'm coming up on 10 weeks post op. I started this process last May at 260 lbs. Day of surgery Dec. 14th I weighed 244 lbs. This morning 204 lbs. I feel really good. Only threw up once (can't eat chicken or hamburger yet) still drinking Premier Protein twice a day, just to make sure I get enough protein. I eat cottage cheese with peaches, yogurt casseroles with chicken and fish. All in all, so glad I did this! Good luck to you all! -

Day 7 - Week 1 Post Surgery - 222.8lbs (Wahooo! Almost down to surgery day weight--only 0.4lbs left!) Hello my dearies! This morning is another fanflippintastic day! I slept really well and had a good day yesterday. I walked throughout the day. Am still having probs walking for longer than 10minute intervals, but I did 5 of those intervals yesterday and I'm hoping they count for something. I surpassed my fluid goals and made my protein goal almost exactly. I'm having no difficulties swallowing or keeping it down. I know everyone experiences this, but I don't feel any/little resistance when eating yogurt or jello or broths/cream soups. So I know it will happen when I eat a dense protein, but it's still a little un-nerving. The irrational paranoia that "my pouch is too big" is strong within me. LOL. Nothin like a little crazy to brighten my day! Oh, I made a revelation last night! Apparently gabapentin can make you addicted to it! I've been taking it since Day 1 after surgery 1800mg/daily. It can also cause weight gain! Fu*k me!! So apparently, it's not good to cold turkey it. You have to wean off of it. Now, I've only been taking it a week, so maybe I don't have to wean off of it? But hells to the max! I started last night to decrease from 1800/day to 1500/day. Then today I will do 1200/day, reducing by 1 pill per day until I'm only on 1 pill and can stop it. I do NOT want to deal with that withdrawal, and I'm not even sure it's doing anything for me except making me sleepy and slow. The food impatience is growing with me. I'm longing for purees. LOL. And the blasted Ricotta Bake keeps whispering my name--especially around evening meal time. But, this liquid phase lasts only a short time. And come Wednesday morning of next week, I will so enjoy my first egg! I count the lovely days! Ok, that's my update! Breakfast is going to be my PB and B Progurt! Have I mentioned that I the stuff? -

Yogurt and Pudding Considered a Liquid?
FluffyChix replied to logicwand's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Mine too. I just had cream of chicken soup with protein powder mixed in for the first time last night. I have been having yogurt for the past couple of days. It sure helps with monotony. But I don't think I'm gonna have pudding because I don't need the extra cals/carbs that it represents. But boy howdie am I counting the days down to next Wednesday where I hope to graduate to purees!! -
Out With the Old--In With the New!
FluffyChix replied to FluffyChix's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Yes. It's Greek yogurt, and I wasn't cleared for Greek yet (cuz of thickness), but am cleared for regular yogurt. So the Premier Protein thins it out, but also adds more protein to the serving. 1fl oz = 1ounce = 2 tbsp = 30ml = approx 30g. -

Yogurt and Pudding Considered a Liquid?
Creekimp13 replied to logicwand's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My group did full liquid in two phases. Phase one was just protein drinks and clear liquids. We did this until we hit seven days. Then, at one week out, we added the yogurt, pudding and cream soups. As far as I can tell....bariatric surgeons have very little consistency on this stuff. Lots of different ideas out there. My personal advice? Do what you feel up to that you have permission to do. Take it slow. If you have nausea, slow up, drink clear fluids and protein drink for a while longer and give it time. -
I'm having surgery Wednesday and I keep reading my dietitian's guide and others over and over again. I feel like this can become a hot mess, especially when you throw in vitamins and supplements. My sheet says I can have full liquids day 2 onward and an example is light yogurt (without fruit) and sugar free pudding. Aren't these more of a pureed item? Not that I'm complaining! LOL But did anyone do this and have any trouble?
