  1. I am trying not to freak out. I am about 8 weeks post op, everything has been going well. I eat about 700-800 calories a day, get 80-100 grams of protein a day. Yesterday the only thing I did different was eat a little popcorn which I know put me up in carbs more than any days so far. But really? 2 lbs?! I am berating myself over the two handfuls of popcorn. I feel awful now
  2. Maybe for purposes of not lifting weights until the risk of hernia has passed. Otherwise, how can doing cardio workouts be harmful unless you have another medical issue that restricts you from exercise. Muscle is heavier than fat so therefore any gain in muscle may show up as a weight gain but it is advantageous in the long run.

I gained 3lbs since Monday. WTF?

I am so with you on the weight gain! I am beyond frustrated, the scale almost went flying out the window this morning. I think mine is from my evil period coming up..but I am joining curves this week and I hope that works.
  4. I complete my six month nutritionist pre-op requirements. I have gained 10lbs. My doctor requested I lose 50?!?! Ugh I learned mindful eating and portion control. I eat relatively good. I am awaiting my psychologist to get approval and my psych test. Then checking with doctor insurance approval and scheduled date. I have waited for almost two years for this. I am nervous excited and scared all at the same time. I try to read and research everything I can find on the topic. I have no idea what my doctor is going to say ;( about weight gain it's strange I haven't gained in years all of a sudden here I am gaining?? I'm glad I am not the only one having issues with the pre op dietician diet, I was thinking I was a total failure everyone else can do it why not you??

    Vets-Any former bandsters?

I don't want to take the thread in a whole other direction so I'll try to answer short. =) All of the above. Here is what went wrong: I had a knee injury early last year which caused me to stop working out the way I loved to, so I became depressed (literally). I started eating terrible which both of which lead to the weight gain. Then I had knee surgery and was told I will never run again which caused more depression. I always had GERD since my lap band but in the past year it has gotten progressively worse. It's so bad right now I sound like a crying frog and cough like a 2 pack a day smoker and choke in my sleep. This does not help with the weight. I found out the Sleeve can make GERD worse so I went to see my surgeon via my insurance and he ordered tests to see if I did have it and if so how bad. Turns out my stomach looks like an hourglass and I do have GERD so bad I can't keep anything down, no matter what it is I'm eating. He has suggested the best offer he can give me to help me with my physical problems is to give me a bypass. I don't feel I have a choice because even though the tests did not show any issues yet but in time the GERD will lead to Barrett's or cancer, not a chance I'm willing to take. In the past few months I've gotten my attitude in order and working to get back into shape the best way I can and get off the bad foods. I'm doing good and doing everything I can to prepare myself for my revision. I kept all my weight off for nearly 3 years so I know I can do it. I just can't let depression get to me in the future like I did last time, and to stay diligent with any signs I'm having problems.

    Low Fat or Low Carbs?

Hello Bry, as someone who prefers well balanced meals it's the kind of fats and carbs rather than complete avoidance of either that should be looked into. Fats should not be saturated or trans, and be higher in Omega 3 which is a heart healthy fat. Animal fats are the worst, so if you eat meat be sure to trim the fat off and cook with extra virgin olive oil or something similar. Carbs are not evil, it's the type of carb that is bad. Obviously vegetables and fruits offer our bodies natural Vitamins and antioxidants that we need. It's always better to consume them naturally on top of any supplements that we take. I would never suggest to anyone to avoid these types of carbs to lower the carb count at the end of the day. Whole grains are good too and provide a lot of Fiber which majority of Americans lack even with a normal stomach. Although we can live without grains and some people are allergic to them, but I do enjoy whole grains myself and it was never a contributor to weight gain or a hindrance to my weight loss. The carbs we should avoid are anything with refined sugar and any foods with this additive, and it goes by a long list of names. You would do yourself a great favor by learning them all. They are also known as "white carbs". It all boils down to calories in and calories out, while making the healthiest choices for our bodies. If you ever get the chance take a course on Nutrition. I have taken several and I will be forever grateful that I did. I personally think it should be a requirement of any living human being, we learn how to do our jobs, but we don't learn how to take care of our Vessels.

    On The Other Side

Hi Mallory it's Karen. I hope you are feeling a little better today. I found that one day can really make a difference. Meeting was good. A couple of people had band to sleeve revision. I was the newest post op there. Others had over four years! The topic was weight gain. You and I aren't on that side but it was great to be around fellow surgery people. I ate 1/2 a scrambled egg today. Was sooo full. Still trying to get in enough fluids. My allergic reaction to the dermabond is subsiding thanks to the steroids. No more itch. Looking forward to meeting you.
  8. I'm amazed at how easy this process was. I was banded on 4/11/14. This, was after a four year decision process encouraged on by continued weight gain and insurance cooperation. I did a one week pre-op Adkins diet which provided positive results but I know I could not have done that one for long. I need variety. The surgery was minimally evasive which was plus. I was in by 6am and out by noon. This would include registration, waiting, surgical prep, waiting, visit from the anesthesiologist, chaplain (prayer is always good before surgery) and doctor. A bit nauseas post op, but a shot took care of that and knocked me out again. Then home to sleep it off. Went out the next morning to get Advil. Probably wasn't my best idea, just a little overly optimistic but, they said to keep moving. The gas used to inflate the cavity for the laparoscopic surgery needed to be reabsorbed in the body and eliminated. The process speeds up with movement. So, good time to kick off and exercise program. I've been walking a mile everyday. I have an awesome doctor (Dr. Shayani) and team. They check in daily and no question is minimized. I'm on a liquid diet until day 8 post op, at which time I can convert to soft foods and began to learn which foods I can tolerate. I'm beginning to feel normal again. Based on my home scale I have lost a total of 19lbs from 4/4/14 to 4/15/14. Amazingly though, I have more movement and none of the usual aches and pains. I'm usually dealing with arthritic pain in my knees and back. I'm thrilled about this. I am experiencing a persistent but slight headache. I attributed it to my body detoxing from all the surgical and post surgery pain meds in addition to all the crap I had put into my body prior to pre-op. My doctor encouraged me to have a cup of coffee. Which I am currently doing and will keep you posted. So there you have it, one person's experience after banding.

    Vets-Any former bandsters?

Hello there, I was revised from band to sleeve on 9/15/2010. Well my experience was initially great, I got to goal in 10 months and went 11 Lbs below. I am going on 4 years post op and many issues and complications have gotten me a weight gain, as well as extremely bad GERD so my new surgeon has me working toward a revision to the Bypass. If you have any specific questions, I'm always open for interpretation. All the best in your upcoming journey!
  10. You are hooked up to IVs when you have the surgery. It's done so you don't become dehydrated. Those fluids can cause a weight gain. You can also have Fluid buildup from the trauma of the surgery itself. I'm not a doctor so I can't explain it in detail but for me, after I had the bi-lateral hip surgery, I gained 15 lbs. It wasn't from food....I was very swollen and that's where the gain came from.

  12. Ok so I am still on track( I slipped up and had 1 cig) , sort of. It's getting easier but I still feel like I didn't get to say goodbye to my habit. What is concerning is the 5+ weight gain I have had. Anyone gaining weight in waiting for surgery?
  13. I've only had this question on medical forms - like "any unexplained weight gain/loss?" Just in case I'm depressed or something, I guess... But if an actual person said "did you mean to lose weight" to me, I don't know that I'd be able to hold back on the choice language. I imagine the mildest thing I'd manage would be something awfully sarcastic.... "no, actually - funny story - I was walking along in Short Pump and tripped and fell on a surgeon... Next thing I know, I have 1/4 of my stomach left and I weigh 75 pounds less!!! And $15,000 is missing!! Do you think I should sue?" But what would probably come out of my mouth would be more along the lines of "JESUS ******* CHRIST WHAT THE ******* DO YOU THINK?!" I'm just a b*tch like that tho. Especially if I get stressed. Such low patience for inane questions....
  14. Stats: 5 10" Nov 1 2013: 266lb - pant size 22 -3x shirt Nov 21 2013 (surgery):248.lb Cw ~ 5 months: April 12: 180- pants size 12- medium shirt I am actually holding back tears as I write this because I am so happy. I has happened so fast and it was so easy but at the same time it was extremely hard and slow. I say that because I have been struggling with losing weight for so many years and even thought I wasn't fully successful those years prior well it was extremely hard. My story: I was a cubby kid from the ages of 8-13. When I was a pre teen I over heard my best friends making fun of how fat I was and I don't think I have ever gotten over that and I am not sure if I ever will. I became anorexic and grow a few inches. Hind sight ( we all know what they say about hind sight) I was never really over weight again until, I was about 24. That is because of course because I on again off again anorexic that whole time. I never learned from my parents how to eat correctly, growing up I remember hearing my mother throwing up after dinner, so needless to say it was learned and encouraged behavior. Ok fast forward to 24- there was a boy, there is always a boy. We broke up and needless to say it was a bad bad breakup. I starting eating like crazy and with in a year and a half I was 230 lbs and a shut in. My weight gain felt like a Scarlett letter for all to see, showing how depressed and the failure have become. I stopped going anywhere in fear of running to people. I started getting on meds to help my extreme anxiety, but I did like the side effects. Now I am 28 my mother who is 5 11" and 210 tells me that she is going to have weight loss surgery. This is the same time a celebrities mother just died from it so I was ver much against it, I wish I was more supportive, but with the pre op 6month diet she was 190 just a few weeks of surgery and I convened her to just kept losing like she has. Which she did, and kept it off. Two years later I am 240 lb and going back to college my mother brings up the surgery suggesting that I get it. I told her I was on a diet and if I don't see results by May I would look into it. I did that for next couple of years. I was still a shut in expect for school and work I never left my apt. I was on first name with the local delivery squad. I graduated school and got a job which required me to move to TN, all while still saying next May. Last Oct a lady at work showed me a pic of her beautiful but slightly overweight daughter and told me she just had weight loss surgery. I though enough is enough and was in Mexico 4wks later. Flash forward to now. I am so happy that I did this. I find my self dancing almost constantly. I have put myself on dating websites and meetup.com to meet people. Yes I haven't dated since I was 24, I hated myself for so long but I feel like a new person. I am not saying I am cured, I know problems, but it am not afraid like I was before. I have to say I am happy for the first time in a long time. Thanks for reading, I just had to tell someone. " I am sorry for writing such a long letter, I didn't have time to write a short one"

  16. I am a 37 year old male that has always struggles with my weight. Multiple diets that did nothing more than induce degrees of yo-yo weight gain/loss. I have been a type 1 diabetic since age 7, and now deal with type 2 as well. I have finally made the decision to consider VSG. I am in the baby stages. I have gone to the first seminar and have scheduled my first appointment. I am a bit nervous of the road ahead, but with a brand new baby at home, and my co-morbidities, I fear not seeing her graduate high school even more. I am seeing Dr. Jeffrey Johnsrud at St. Josephs in OC. The whole process is intimidating to me down to and including complications. I am an ICU Nurse and see a lot of normal procedure go wrong, but I keep telling myself I only see a small fraction of bad when overwhelmingly results are great.

  19. One week ago I slipped and fell. I hit my head hard and my ribs and scapula are hurt too. The scale jumped up 6 pounds 2 days after. The scale has been down 4 pounds and back up 2 pounds. I'm eating the same. Is this weight gain from swelling?

    Any opinions about Paraguard?

I had a paragard for 3 months. It slipped too low. After a lot of bleeding& pain, I got it out. My midwife didn't believe the bleeding was from poor positioning even tho the strings were much llonger every month, I've never had unprotected sex& made me pay for an std panel. All clear. I'm concerned about uterine scarring. The insertion was fine. I had the cervix softening med, but after that I had contraction like pain, bled 10 days the 1st month, 14 days the 2nd, & all of January. No time for sex & was really inconvenient. My normal periods were 4 days. I'm starting the minipill& praying for no weight gain or negative effects.

December 2013 Sleever Pounds Lost Log

HW 267 SW 245 CW 213 I had a weight gain of 7lbs but I attributed it to several factors. So, I'm one pound away from my lowest weight, post-op!

    Weight Gain

May I ask what BMI you were when your weightloss stopped and what BMI you are now, after the weight gain? I would be tempted to go back to basics. Total basics. Protein, Water, no carbs, lower fat, lower sugar.

    Plateau? Get Over It!

Alex, I have always had an ALL-OR-NOTHING mentality throughout my life..... only where weight loss, dieting, and exercise was concerned. Thus, I had never been able to MAINTAIN a weight loss. As soon as I would lose, and hit my first plateau, I would start to gain. But, my decision to give up daily and weekly weigh-ins has changed me. I don't see the stalls or plateaus as much, so I don't throw in the towel, so to speak. It was very liberating for ME. Plateaus in the past, would put me over the edge, and in the end, always resulted in weight GAIN, because I couldn't handle them. Enjoyed your article. It made me realize again that the road to weight loss and getting fit is NOT a straight path, but a road with twists, turns, and even plateaus along the way!
