    Food FOMO

    I think the hardest "diet" part of this whole experience was the first several days of my preop diet (I was full liquids for 1 week and then clear fluids for 1 week). It was hard psychologically because, like you, I was thinking too much about what I was missing. My surgery was right during the holidays so I was extra in my head about "treats". There was also the emotion of "this is really happening" and it was a little scary for me. Physically, my first few preop diet days were punctuated by headache and anger (hangry). After that, I got used to it and the rest was mostly smooth sailing. My advice is to take it day by day, hour by hour, or minute by minute, if you have to. Know that it does get better and that after surgery, you most likely will not want the things you are thinking you will miss, at least for a while. Do be prepared for the weirdness of not being hungry, ever, after surgery. One of the strangest things I've ever experienced. So, take the pre-op time to establish a better eating schedule that follows your post op plan, if you can. I am still trying to get this part down 3.5 months post surgery. I know you will do well! You are here asking questions, and participating. This shows me that that you want to do well and will do what it takes!

    7 weeks post op

    I am 7 weeks today. I have lost 23.2 since surgery, 31.6 total. I weigh myself weekly, the last 2 weeks it has been 1.8 a week. Slow but steady. If you lost a lot in the beginning, it's exciting, then disappointing when it slows, but totally normal. My Dr. recommends only weighing once a month. Make sure you are getting enough protein. Your starting weight, age, gender and metabalism are all things that affect your rate of loss that you can't control. These last 7 weeks have seen a lot of adjustments to our body, from surgery, then progressing from liquids, purees, soft to "regular" food. I can eat quite a bit of pureed, liquidy type foods, but much less eating more solid food, so I'm sure that will make a difference. I remember one past diet I was on, it was super structured, and I was consistent with exercise and food. I lost 3 pounds every 3 weeks. Not one pound a week, but nothing, nothing, then bam, 3 pounds without doing anything different.
  3. Could any of you share the amount of weight you lost during the 2 week pre-op liquid diet? I’m curious because I’d started eating must healthier once I had my first consult with surgeon and dropped about 14 lbs leading up to my liquid pre-op diet over the course of 3 months…slow but steady. What happens if you fall below the 40 BMI requirement for insurance? I didn’t think to ask the nurse/dietitian when I went in for my work-up. On day 2 of pre-op diet now and think I’ll never want the taste of real chocolate again after this.
  4. I am on full liquids. I am doing like 3 shakes a day, yogurt, pudding, jello (all sugar free). Of course adding in the water, gatorade zero, and crystal light. No caffeine either-that has added to my fatigue too. I did try some broth yesterday to try and get used to it for post op and its not my favorite by far. I keep hearing that the second week is better. Hoping this is true. Are you having the sleeve?

    as far as losing 7 lbs in two weeks, that's actually pretty normal. I know a lot of people think we should be losing 30+ lbs the first month, but that's thanks to shows like "My 600 lb Life". Keep in mind that the people on that show start out MUCH heavier than most of us, so that kind of loss would be very unusual in more "normal" WLS patients. Most of us seem to lose somewhere in the 15-25 lb range the first month - and given that you started out at a lower weight than a lot of us, I would expect you'll be somewhere on the lower end of that range by month's end. I lost 16 lbs the first month, and I started out MUCH heavier than you (and starting BMI is one of the factors that affects your rate of weight loss - or at least early on). As long as you follow your plan and your overall trend is downward, despite the occasionally fluctuation or stall, you're golden. In the end, your success will be due to how compliant you are to the plan - not how fast or slow the weight comes off.

    Hi all! I had my RNY 15 days ago. I'll be 55 years old next month. I'm 5'4 and my top weight was 248. Pre op I was 231 (lost weight with pre-op diet hell). Currently sitting at 222 lbs. Still on Full Liquid stage with starting the Pureed on 4/19. No real hunger pangs at all, just weakish. Weighing myself just once a week. I've always been hard on myself, so weighing once a week, I think, will keep things more in perspective for me. I'm down 9 lbs since surgery and trying hard not to tell myself it should be more! I'm Feeling pretty good. Was REALLY sore for that first week, but feeling more comfortable every day. I'm just bummed about the lack of energy I still feel. I can toodle around the house fine, do chores, etc, but when it comes to going to the store, short walks, etc, I get wiped out SO easily. Going back to work next Monday and dreading the 10+ hour days I do. Luckily it's just 3 days a week with another half day thrown in there (I average ~35 hours/week). Can't afford to take off any more work. Anyone else experience this? I'm averaging ~500 calories/day, which I know isn't much and that's likely the reason. Currently having 2 protein shakes/day. My doc put a note into the dietician to reach out to me about all this. I'm grateful to have found this site! By the way, I can't seem to figure out how to have my "Weight loss ticker" show on my posts. Help?
  8. The infamous 3 weeks stall! I think most of us over here had it. I'm glad yours broke so quick. My advice to you it to try not to stress so much about stalls and focus on following your program. Good luck

    May 2023 surgeries

    My date is May 10. I'm on Day 2 of my 4 week pre op diet, so far, so good. I started this process back in October and I'm sl glad I'm finally so close. Good luck to us all!

    Feb sleeves unite!

    I am at the 6 week mark and on soft foods. I have been stalled for 2 weeks at 185-186. I started at 223 pounds and was 200 and for the day of surgery. It’s very difficult for me to even drink a protein shake and maybe one or two bites of food . I realize I’m on the smaller end of weight loss surgery but I am hopeful to lose another 40 pounds. My big wins are that I am off of all diabetes medicine and also 75% of the medication I was taking before my sleeve however I’m looking for any helpful hints I can get to break the stall. Suggestion please.

    Don’t ‘only’ any of your weight loss. I always say every pound you lose. It doesn’t matter how fast or slow you lose because we all lose at the rate that right for us & our body. Yes, this is likely a stall. They’re a very normal & important part of your weight loss progress and you’ll likely experience more of them. It’s the time your body takes to come to terms with the changes that have occurred (weight loss, dietary changes, etc.) & when your body resets your metabolism & the hormones that manage your hunger, satiety, digestion, etc. Stick to your plan & you’ll notice the scale moving again … it just might take up to three weeks.

    Struggling to Consume Calories/Protein

    Thank you! These answers really help put things in perspective. I think I’m just overwhelmed by the program’s protein requirements for the first 2 weeks (60-80 grams), which is just not attainable by me right now.
  17. First of all you are doing great with with loss- you are going to see some minor ups and downs over time as your body heals and settles —so just keep focused. My doctor advised protein first, and if i do that i have NO room for any carbs- and if i do it’s like a bite of sautéed squash or two green beans. Keep up with your water and your protein goals and you should be good to go— that being said, when i was in pureed stages, I had mashed potato and grits (maybe 2 oz at a time of one ) because I couldn’t think of anything appealing to eat for that week and they were on approved food list. When you move to soft there are all sorts of soft meats you can have- tuna, salmon, chicken, ham, pork that has been pressure cooked— soon soft hambuger. Eggs are protein, cheese has protein.. mashed beans on occasion (Taco Bell pinto bean side has 180 calories, 9 g Protien). Look up baked ricotta recipes. Or cottage cheese? Good luck— and ignore the comments from Dad- and remember you are doing this for yourself — and you deserve to be cared for and to take care of your body.
  18. I only had water, broth and Gatorade zero the first three days. Then I had 2 protein shakes per day for the first week. For me, the key was sipping constantly. I also used Gatorade zero with protein if I just couldn’t get another sip of shake down. At about a week post op, I tried protein broths and loved the Unjury brand chicken. I’ve heard some people thin out yogurt (like Oikos Triple Zero). Just try your best to get as much protein as you can. 50 out of 60 grams is pretty good! Just keep the goal in mind and sip, sip, sip!
  19. Hi all. I’m 1 week out from having gastric sleeve surgery. The procedure went well, but I had a good amount of pain for the first few days (where I couldn’t really consume anything other than water, Gatorade Zero and broth). Since about day 4, I’ve been trying to consume somewhere close to my protein goals (60 grams). I just can’t get there, or really be anywhere close. I’ve never loved protein shakes, and can only have 2 ounces at a time. I’m lucky if I consume 1 shake/day. I add in chicken bone broth, and a little bit of nonfat yogurt/cottage cheese (which my surgeon allows), but I just can’t seem to consume more than 250 calories/day (at best 40-50 grams of protein). And it is a constant struggle (since I have been good about my fluids). It is wearing me out a bit, trying to consume protein, and it impacts my ability / endurance to get outside and walk. Any suggestions?
  20. HI! I am 2 months post-op 40lbs down. In 2 weeks I gained 3 lbs. My cravings are back from before surgery. Its so hard to meal prep as well since my family are also big and cook unhealthy meals. I eat small portions but its been a lot of carbs. Any recommendation? What should I be eating at 2 months? My father tells me I shouldn't be eating at all but my nutritionist says otherwise. Its kind of the reason i'm back to my cravings. Father problems. I want to do better for myself. Any food recommendation for the soft stage? Thank you for any help.

    It a really hard ask when we have all done diets in the past and failed, but we only need to believe in the process. I was a doubter too. All you need to do is stick to your teams plan and have some patience. After you have stalled a few times and stay away from the scales as much, it will sink in that you are steadily loosing.
  23. I had my surgery 2/22/23. I am going through the same exact thing!! I am down 25lbs and the scale hasn’t moved in 2 weeks. It is extremely frustrating thinking I am doing something wrong. I am hoping this is just a stall and the weight will start coming off again. Good Luck!

    Best protein bar?

    I am obsessed with Built Bats. They are lower in calories than most other protein bars (130 to 180 depending on flavor) and DELICIOUS. They have three types: bars (which have a caramel-like texture), puffs (marshmallow filling), and granola (like caramel with granola mixed in; different from traditional granola bars), with several flavors of each, and an ever-changing selection of limited release flavors. It’s a matter or personal preference, but granola bars are my favorites, followed by regular bars, and the puffs taste good but are not as filling. Others I like include Fit Crunch, Verb, and Fulfil. I have seen Walmart and Trader Joe’s selling singles of various brands of protein bars, which is nice if you want to try one before you buy a whole box.
  25. I started to develop a rash very similar to what you are describing when I was also about four weeks out from surgery. I suspected it might have been this: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6558236/ Fortunately I was able to clear my rash with just slight modifications to my diet. I added just the tiniest little bit of carbohydrates to my intake with some apple sauce, sliced banana, etc. Previously I had been very, very strict with no carbs for approximately six weeks.
