  1. Rice. This is likely the main contribution to your inability to eat alot and gain weight. Rice is notoriously filling for the majority of us, with low nutritional value. One cup is only 200 cals so if the majority of your diet is (less than) 1 cup of rice and a chicken thigh (and assuming you attempt this 3 times a day) your cals are pretty low by end of the day….resulting in further weight loss. Maybe cut down a bit on the rice and replace with with a fattier meat? Or some avocado? You can also pour a nice high-calories sauce over it all, like a pesto or herb infused olive oil, or a nice peanut satay, etc. P.S. Rice was a daily staple for me too pre-op…now i only have rice when i eat sushi.

    Kept it Quiet?

Welcome aboard! 👋 Everyone around me knows. My family is super close, and yes they're supportive and wonderful. It's something you have to decide for yourself, because only you can predict how those around you might react. When the weight starts coming off and there's a dramatic difference, people will start to ask questions. So at some point people are probably going to find out. You just have to decide if it's better to tell them before or after. Will delaying telling them make them more upset (they might feel betrayed for you not confiding} or will seeing your weight loss prevent them from making negative comments (they won't be able to say it's just another diet to fail when they see your progress)? I have a friend that had VSG in Mexico two years ago and she only told her husband and kids, and she went alone due to Covid. When she came back, some months later she told me, or rather showed me. We finally met for coffee and I didn't recognize her. I was shocked, but in a good way. We didn't get together that year until the end of summer, due to Covid. I was the only friend she told about her surgery, since I was a weight loss patient, she knew I would understand and support her. And she still hasn't told anyone else. Sure people ask questions about why she eats such tiny amounts, and I don't think they buy her "I'm just not hungry" line now, lol. They probably suspect, but they never bring it up. Best wishes!

Stall or I am done loosing?

I am wondering the same thing. I am 7 months post op and have hovered around 295 pounds for about 5 weeks. I am down 98 pounds total. I hope it is just a stall because I would like to see another 10 pound loss.
  4. Flying to turkey (Istanbul) with mita clinic for gastric sleeve and a hair transplant in September , really looking forward to both procedures Sent from my LE2123 using BariatricPal mobile app

    Utter regret

I went through this too, it's a combination of things, hormones, grief for the loss of your old life style , the fear of the unknown about your new life. It can be very overwhelming and unfortunately many surgeons and their teams don't even acknowledge this side of surgery let alone warn you it could happen. Considering how common this is it should be discussed so when patients do experience this they can at least realise its normal and will pass.
  6. I used the each of the following items every single day during weight loss phase (some things multiple times a day): Food Scale & measuring cup Body Scale Some sort of food tracking app (i used My Fitness Pal Premium) Insulated water bottle something to keep u regular (i used Benefibre) A Timer (used the one on my watch)
  7. The weight loss for revision varies a lot, but in general is significantly less than with your initial surgery. If you're doing it for GERD, it makes sense, but for weight loss, it makes more sense to look at other weight loss strategies like medications and counting calories/behavior change
  8. You shouldn't even be looking at the scale at this point. Just follow the program, stick to the program, heal, recover, and take care of yourself. The weight loss will happen on its own. Quit watching it.

What was your "this is it" moment

My turning point was when we went on our usual walk with the dogs in November 2021. I was struggling and out of breath on a small incline and had to stop. My ankles and hips were throbbing. I started crying and my husband was all worried like I was gonna pass out. I said “I’m just having a melt down right now because of what I’ve done to my body. I need to cry it out.” I cried the whole way home. I started Googling weight loss surgery in December. I was surprised that I actually qualified because when I looked into it 5 years ago, my BMI was too low. So I figured this was a sign that it was meant to be.
  10. Almost 8 yrs VSG and had severe GERD beforehand. It significantly decreased post op but I've remained on PPI medication the entire time. I was down to 1-2 total doses per week, however I had some regain over the last year and am up to THREE TIMES daily!! It's everything to do with how I carry my weight- all in my middle. While I was quite satisfied with the GERD being almost totally resolved initially, I'm fearful that even IF I lose the current regain it won't go away to the extend that it was in the past. I have been told by my bariatric team that a revision is likely the ONLY way to get the GERD to go away with 100% certainty. That sounds pretty good to me but I am quite fearful of surgery in general because I'm a nurse practitioner and we make terrible patients... I would love to know what the loss pattern was like for those who had the revision and can I plan to see awesome results? I mean, BESIDES the GERD clearing up? I am currently about 40 lbs about my ULTIMATE goal- I never reached that goal with my VSG, stopping about 12 lbs away from it...

    September Surgery Buddies!!

It’s weird. I’m hitting all these milestones now back to back to back. 2kg ago I officially left the “obesity” category of the bmi. Now I’m “just slightly overweight”. I’m 1kg away from being in Onderland, which is insane! 🥰 Then another kg and I’m in the 80 digit (89). Granted I’m cheating by combining metric and imperial weight system’s milestones 🙃 but for the longest time it felt like I was losing weight and losing weight and losing weight and “nothing changed”. I was still viewed as and considered morbidly obese, I felt it too and the clothes I wore were baggy but still okay. Now all of a sudden it’s going super fast and in 12kg I’ll be at the weight I havent been at since 6 years ago. At the beginning of this it felt so insanely daunting (145lb weight loss) and when my surgeon said he thinks I’ll get to somewhere in the 80s I thought he was crazy! I really thought I had “failed” surgery because there were so many stalls and I can eat quite a bit of food. Now I’m just really happy and excited about where this will continue to go, even if it slows down. I will now officially join a gym and get my butt moving again for the first time in 5 years! Kinda nervous. Kinda excited 😊 Sorry for the long post it’s just been on my mind!
  12. humm I don't eat bread very often, and they do advise us to stay away from rice as it will fill you very quickly and has very little nutritional value. Try to eat more protein for example eat your chicken thigh first if you still have room veggies or salad next and rice last. processed foods are very easy to eat and I found don't fill me at all for example the other day I had a hotdog on 2 slices of toasted bread with grilled cheese I was able to eat all of it the pace I could pre surgery and felt I could have eaten more, but I didn't . Pasta is the same with me it doesn't always sit well. Don't listen to the people around you. I had a work mate say to me "oh for god sake will you eat something you are getting to skinny" well I still have a belly and have another 10kg to loose so don't listen. I did notice your BMI is low but you are a small build to going by your height. increase your protein that will help reduce muscle loss and help build it back up. Get in touch with your dietian if you had one if you don't have one look one up that has bariatric experience they should be able to help you with food choices etc . My Appetite was like yours at the start but once I hit 6 months my snacking urges kicked back in and I am currently having a hard time keeping that under check and I have put on a kilo this week and I have also been in a 6 week stall so that's dishearten for me. someone posted a youtube video from a bariatric dr advising against exercise in the first year of surgery but each to his own I guess depending on how much you exercise maybe give it a break until you feel better. Hope you do feel better soon.
  13. We all have different experiences. I still take anywhere from 30 to an hour to eat about a recommended serving size Sometimes it depends on what I’m eating, if I’m eating alone or with others, etc. If I’m with others I never finish my meal. I think it’s because I sub consciously eat more quickly & then my restriction kicks in. It took me a while to slow my weight loss (about 18 months) because I couldn’t eat enough & was 48.2kg at my lowest. I had to keep adding snacks to increase my calories (still looked for nutrient dense foods & ate about 5 snacks a day). Yes, I did feel like I ate all day. I did this with my surgeon & dietician’s support & advice. But as time passed I could eat more & I dropped snacks. Have a chat with your dietician. Add some more nutrient & calorie dense foods & snacks to your day. Little things can help like enriching your milk by adding powdered milk - more calories, protein, calcium, etc. Add in a few multi or whole grains. Add some good fats. Have some fruit. Don’t be afraid to eat slowly. It doesn’t matter if you’re still eating & your family has finished. When staying with my mum I’m often still sitting eating & she’s finished & cleared away. Also an opportunity for families to sit together talking longer at the dinner table.

    FUPA

Hi! First, congratulations on the weight loss! Yay! 🎉💪🏼👍🏼 Second, i got down to a BMI 20 at my lowest weight (down from BMI 43) and i still had a noticeable (to me) lump on my pelvic region. it only went away after i got a tummy tuck. But thats just me. Others may have got a different outcome. P.S. This was me pre-plastics at about BMI 21. You can see my fupa trying to bust out of the top of the swim bottoms. 🤷🏻‍♀️ When i wore leggings i would joke that I was packing down there. And I don’t think losing any more weight would have helped…

    April 2022 Surgery Buddies

Thank you🤗 I’m hoping that this is the week I hear something! I only started thinking about this is January so it hasn’t really been that long, but I am so ready to GO! You sound very disciplined! Good for you! The waiting is easier to handle during the week because I’m at school. I AM concerned that Cigna might ding me with 3 months of weight loss management BUT that would put recovery for me over the summer, and I think I can handle the disappointment. Good luck and thank you for the encouragement. ❤️

    April 2022 Surgery Buddies

You can do it! Maybe you’ll hear back tomorrow since it’s the weekend now. I scheduled my surgery 2 months out to save up money (self-pay) and it’s been a long wait but nothing compared to some people’s insurance requirements with 6 month weight-loss diet and nutrition, psych consults, etc. I try to look at it as I only have 3 weeks left to get things done around here before surgery puts me out 🙃
  17. I'm 11 months out. I can tell you that the amount of food I can eat has been that same since about month 6. If I go out to eat with hubby, I usually eat about 1/3 of the meal. I take it home and we split the remaining portion for lunch the next day. I am thankful I can't eat like I did. It does take time to eat. Friends and family eat so much faster, I understand what you are saying. Be sure you check in with your dietitian. That is important as you are worried about malnutrition. I can also tell you that I lost ALOT of hair up until about month 8? 9? But it has definitely started to regrow! That was devastating to me.... It will grow back

Less than month preop weight gain

Don’t worry too much (I know easier said than done) but weight loss isn’t always a simple or straight path down to your goal. Sometimes you may have little increases along the way too. But it doesn’t mean you won’t be successful. If you’re following your plan and staying consistent then you’re doing great. Congratulations so far ❤️

    Weightloss stall during your period?

I'm still sorting out the pattern, but I think my weight loss stalls out/slows way down during my period. Mine isn't every 30 days but when your husband notices the pattern it is probably happening. LOL!
  20. I am 8 months post surgery and have hit my ideal weight. But I still can't eat like a normal person. 2 spoons of anything and I feel full. I have to wait another 15 minutes to eat another 2 spoons. I'm losing more weight than expected and I'm worried that I might be underweight soon. I don't wish to eat like I did pre-surgery but I do wish I can eat at least half the portion I used to eat at half the time. A normal portion of food takes me an hour or two to finish. I'm worried that I'll be malnourished and losing a lot of hair because of it. I've seen that some people have gained back some weight after a year into their surgery. I just want to eat like a normal person again. Sort of regret getting the surgery because I did not anticipate the depression that comes with not being able to eat and the muscle loss I've experienced. Can anyone share their experience 1 year post surgery? I need to know if I can eat normally again. 2 3 bites of food and then being full and not wanting to eat anymore is torture and unhealthy for my body.
  21. This is very interesting. I have tattooed eyebrows because I lost most of them and they were thin to begin with. I've had thin hair problems all my life (anemia, thyroid, bad luck).
  22. Lol, yeah i was feeling pretty bad a$$ and proud of myself when it was all done (during, not so much). Im starting to get greys myself, granted im at less than 50 grey hairs in total at the moment and i henna my hair to blend em in better with my regular black hair. Though by the time im willing to go full on grey (and if im willing to go through this again!) the tech said the pigment would be adjusted lighter to work with greys. We’ll see…

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

I have the same problem with coffee. I don’t drink fast enough now and I hate cold coffee. So I got an Ember Mug. It was expensive but it is amazing. Piping hot coffee all morning long. And I am saving a fortune on the Starbucks below where I work. So I feel it paid for itself. Congrats to everyone on the dedication. I haven’t had many issues this last month. My weight loss has slowed down but I am flirting with hitting 199 lbs which will be a huge mental milestone dropping out of the 200s.

    Any April 2021 surgeries?!

I hope that you are doing better. Congrats on your 100+ weight loss. You are at 11 months now. Almost at your 1 year mark in a few weeks. Are you planning to do anything to celebrate? I'm deciding how to acknowledge this huge success 😁 wondering what people are thinking about.

    Any April 2021 surgeries?!

Congrats on all your progress. Any plans to do anything to acknowledge your progress and surgerversary? Sorry to hear that you are having difficulty losing those last 12 pounds. I'm not sure I can be helpful with suggestions since it sounds like you have tried many things so far. I would say making a change to exercise or food intake, but I'm guessing that you've done both in different ways so far. I did not have a weight goal when I started my process. My goal was no CPAP and BP pills. A specific number for the scale was NOT on my motivation list. When I got rid of the CPAP, I was thrilled. Exact weight wise, my body kind of chose a slowing point for weight loss. I started to see myself as smaller and felt ok with the size. I actually became concerned about not wanting to get smaller because did not want to look sick or be too little since that's not really me. I then looked at the number on the scale and chose what I thought was a good buffer weight since weight will fluctuate by a few pounds as we are living life. So, I picked the number that way. I was only like 3 pounds away from that selected goal weight at that time. I kept eating by the plan from my surgery program and I lost those 3 pounds to hit the goal weight. I think that took maybe around a month or so. It was slower at that point as my body had found its resting point. I was fine with that. I will say that I've lost 3 more pounds since getting to my goal weight. That's fine with me. Gives me more space for fluctuating. I still eat according to plan. I weigh every morning without any emotional distress. It holds me accountable for anything I did the prior day. I'm saying all this to just say that perhaps you can celebrate success where you are. I read so many people post goal weights here and how some struggle with frustration at times due to difficulty getting to that exact number. Perhaps that's not the best strategy. Just my thought. Like if I weighed 5 pounds more, would I be ok with that. Yep. Just sharing so maybe you can have less frustration about where you are. Sounds like you did great. Congrats! 🤗🙋‍♀️👍
