What's the best way to mentally prepare?
GotProlactinoma replied to ElseeG's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
One thing that might help you with long term success is to realize the mistake many doctors and even their nutritionists make, encouraging their patients even right after surgery to eat sweet tasting foods. This is a huge moment for you to rid yourself of sugar cravings. Stop eating anything sweet, period. Get your protein powder from grass fed PLAIN whey (or another plain protein powder, no sweetener in it, no flavor). I mixed it into full fat milk, or even water (really tasteless and boring), and then learned to enjoy it with a bit of flax seed in the wonderful full fat plain Greek yogurt. Get used to plain water. Unsweetened tea or coffee (use fats at will, cream, ghee, coconut oils). No fruit. And no fake sugars. None. No sweet tasting anything. Eating is difficult at first, and your gut bug population will change from your pre op diet. What a glorious opportunity you are given, to change the content of your diet. The surgery provides portion control for a long long time. But YOU can grab the opportunity to stop eating sweet things. When your gut population evolves over that first month, it will end up being the good bacteria that crave resistant starches like cooked and cooled potatoes and root veggies. You can even add some inulin (a fiber powder) or potato starch to your protein drinks. These starches will feed your gut bugs and keep them happy and regular, and they will only have you crave those starches. You won’t crave sweet foods if you avoid the sweetened whey powders and drinks and the fake color, sucralose jellos and crap. Broths and cheesy bakes taste way better than fake flavored fake sugared jellos. And keep you losing. Use the pause in your diet to choose nonsweet foods. What a great opportunity not to waste. -
Fairlife milk (It's in a blue jug usually with the organic milk) is higher in protein (13 per 8 ounces) and less in carbs. It's ultra filtered and much easier to drink than protein shakes. I was able to get my protein in without the shakes. Using fairlife milk, bone broth, and cream soups made with fairlife milk while I was on fluids. Once I was on pureeds I added cottage cheese and greek yogurt which also helped reach my protein goals.

How do you get to 60g protein and stay under 800
Losebig replied to ElseeG's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I shoot for 80 - 100G and routinely do it in under 500 calories. The key is protein dense foods. Here’s a typical menu for me (I’m pretty boring so I eat almost the same thing every day and like it): .5c egg whites with .5 oz mozzerella cheese (17g protein, 106 calories) 3.5 oz chicken (28g protein, 105 calories) 3.5 oz of chicken for dinner I will usually have 1 - 2 snacks of string cheese (7g protein, 50 calories) or cottage cheese (10g protein, 90 calories) or sigg yogurt (15g protein, 110 calories). Sometimes I just repeat a meal for a snack (chicken). Recently my favorite meal has been a little higher calorie, but tastes great: 3.5 oz 99% lean ground turkey w taco seasoning (25g p, 140c) .5 oz mexican cheese (4g, 50c)) .5 oz sour cream (.5g p, 30c) The key is all calories are protein calories. My plan doesn’t allow carbs until 6 or 12 months. This does seem to be helping me maintain muscle mass, which is the goal of this particular plan. -
Breakfast: 1 slice white toast with 2 tablespoons peanut butter Morning snack: Greek yogurt Lunch: 1 cup chili Afternoon snack: String cheese, protein shake Dinner: Protein and salad

Does your stomach feel normal?

I buy the Bariatric Fusion meal replacement powder. It is intended/sold as an actual meal replacement product - i.e. just add water and that's your meal, but I started out getting it because they sell it in single serving packets and I wanted to try something without spending $40 or more on a huge tub, in case it tasted awful. I figured out that each tablespoon of it has 7 grams of protein (I figured out all the macros for my food journal, but don't remember off the top of my head). At first I just added one tbs to various things to test out the texture/flavor. I put it in Vitamin Water and while it didn't add a texture or different flavor, I feel like it may have made it taste a little sweeter or something - I'm not exactly sure but I didn't like it. But I can add it to literally everything else - yogurt, applesauce, mashed potatoes, oatmeal, homemade frozen protein pops & fruit pops, and it has no added flavor or texture to me whatsoever, and being up to 3 tbs per serving, has really made it easier to get my protein in. I'm buying it by the tub now. Everyone is different, but I highly recommend it. -
Hydration issues after surgery
logicwand replied to logicwand's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Not at all. I take limited, slow sips. The water usually feels like rock going down, then there’s no feeling. But about 30 seconds later I get a shooting pain on my right side. It’s making me not want to drink. Ugh. Same thing with my full liquids - yogurt and cream of chicken soup. Doctor said everything looks great, X-rays, blood work, and I had no soreness when he pushed all over my abdomen. He said keep going slow on drinking and eating and it should go away. I see him for my first follow up on Tuesday. -
Honestly? It's widely available but it's got a buttwad of extra sugar that is unnecessary. It's more inconvenient, but I order Peanut Butter Slim from Vitacost. It's similar without all the extra added sugar and the burnt peanut taste that I always taste from PB2. I heart the stuff and buy it 2 jars at a time. LOL. I use it in my yogurt, cottage cheese and protein smoothies. YUM!

How do you get to 60g protein and stay under 800
KimTriesRNY replied to ElseeG's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Some yogurt has 12-15 grams of protein. I eat these 2 oz. packs of baked lunch meats that have 12 grams. So both of those together is 24 if I eat that for a lunch. I make a lot of homemade soups and chicken dishes like chili or chicken curry that have 25-30 grams a serving. Premier protein makes snack bars that have 15 grams of protein too. I also like to eat cheese sticks as a snack. It all adds up. I normally end up with 60-90 grams daily and about 750-900 calories. -

Definitely easier if you have a shake for one of your meals . I do one for breakfast (30g) , then triple zero yogurt (15g) for a mid morning snack, turkey or 3 oz chicken for lunch (18g), string cheese (6g) for mid afternoon snack ... then dinner! You’ll get used to it Now water?? I really struggle with!! HW 242, SW 236- Bypass 12/20/17 GW#1- 199 [emoji736]. GW#2- 175 CW 194 5’6” -
I'm one week post-op today. My Dr has me on liquids (plus yogurt, sugar free pudding and strained cream soups) for 2 weeks. After my next appointment, hopefully I'll be cleared for mushy foods. The biggest hurdle right now is fatigue. Everyday I nap for 2-3 hours. Hopefully my body adjusts soon to 500 calories a day and the fatigue goes away. We can do this.

Does your stomach feel normal?
newself replied to logicwand's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I made my husband hide the scale so I would not be tempted to weigh before Monday which is my 2 week check up, however.... a pair of pants that I could barely button now fit fine! This has just been so much easier than I imagined (so far), I'm walking 4 miles per day etc. One thing, I just hate all of the protein stuff (drinks, shakes etc) so I've copied some of fluffy chicks ideas and am making my own "soups" with yogurt, protein powder etc. and last night I slept on my stomach for the first time! How are you doing? -
Does your stomach feel normal?

My date was the day before yours, so we are likely at the same place food wise. I was able to eat shredded chicken salad for a while there, but got tired of it. Then I was cleared to introduce new foods. I feel discomfort with a lot of "regular" foods meat/veggies/fruits/grains. I can eat nuts and protein bars for some reason. Anyway, just trying to be super aware of eating ridiculously slow is the first thing, and I struggle with it, but am constantly trying to improve that. I've backed off some of the more dense foods for now and often have something similar to this: yogurt/granola/chia seeds/pureed berries/unflavored protein powder = total 1/2 cup at a time. That is dinner most nights and sometimes lunch too. 3 Tbs of the unflavored protein powder adds 21 grams of protein and I cannot taste it at all. I use regular low fat yogurt as I can't tolerate the taste of Greek yogurt, but the reg. adds an add'l 3-4 g of protein. I also add a packet of Benefiber to keep that intake up. But when I do get that pain or a "clogged up" feeling (with burping or hiccups) I will have 1-2 Wintergreen Lifesavers, which actually help a lot with the digestive process for me. Something with the mint - Peppermint would work similarly I'm guessing since I know the tea is good for stomach issues. If I still feel pressure or any type of reflux symptoms at that point, I take 1-2 Tums - again the mint flavor works best for me. Then, since drinking too soon after is a no-no, I have found that sucking on ice cubes/ice chips helps me feel a little better, is almost as good as being able to drink something without the pain/stretching issues, and a whole cup can take 30 mins or more to finish. Those are just a few tips that help me! Good luck -
New Premier Protein flavor!!!!
FluffyChix replied to Maggie1955's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Thanks for this! The peaches n cream is sweet too (to me, I don't have a sweet tooth either), but it's great mixed in Greek yogurt, mixed with Fairlife milk (high protein milk) or with cashew or coconut milk. Cuz it cuts the sweetness! -

BTW, it was pretty delish mixed with Greek yogurt to make "yogurt soup." -
I'm not suppose to start pureed foods until next week. The yogurt and protein shakes have helped. I did sneak in some pureed carrots. Bought baby food today.

Out With the Old--In With the New!
Miss Topaz replied to FluffyChix's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I tried a scrambled egg when I first went on purees. It took me a long time to get half of it down. I have had another since, but actually have had more luck with hardboiled (while on soft foods). Pureed chicken salad (yours sounded good - mine had greek yogurt, lemon juice, dried onions and herbs) went down a lot better. And I ate a lot of lowfat cottage cheese. I mixed ricotta with vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg and some splenda. Texture was a bit gritty but the flavor was good and it went down well. -
IS THIS NORMAL? I am now a week post-op and did perfectly fine on the clear liquids. the only nausea I've experienced has been from the initial pain medication which I've discontinued. I'm trying to switch over to an all liquid diet, but even one or two spoonfuls sends my stomach into a death spiral. I've tried low carb creamy soup, protein shakes, and Greek yogurt, but just a couple ounces and I feel like someone set fireworks in my stomach. Is this normal? Do I just need to give it more time? I had no issue with the pre-op liquid diet and never feel hungry at all. Thanks!

Yasso frozen greek yogurt...chocolate fudge bars
Creekimp13 posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
80 calories. 6 grams of protein. A sensible amount of naughty with some decent nutritional value. https://yasso.com/products/bars/chocolate-fudge/ Maybe for when the rest of the fam gets ice cream on a Friday night:) Sort of a special occasion treat that won't sabotage you. Or a household replacement for ice cream. Kids will love these things. They're delicious. -
Out With the Old--In With the New!

Week 1 Surgeon's Visit My surgeon was so pleased with my progress. She smiled/beamed the whole time!!! And she said I could start eggs today and by this weekend, I could begin adding anything that I can mash with a fork and very soft steamed veggies! Wahooooo!!!!! Thah crahps ah sayuved!!!! I told her I'd been dreaming of a perfect 6 minute soft boiled egg and avocado and poached fish. LOL. She laughed at that! She was taken aback at the extent of my bruising. She said it would all go away with time, but that it was a lot of bruising! And she wants to see me again next week. She ok'd me drinking 12-16oz of water per hour if I want, and loved the amount I was walking. And she said that I'm pretty textbook and right where they want me for weight loss. She was very excited about the lack of pain and about me not being on pain pills and stepping down on the gaba. So it's a great report! And then I did something dumb! LOL. We went out to breakfast to celebrate. And the place didn't do soft boiled eggs or poached eggs, so I asked for 1 egg fried over medium and for a side of avocado slices. I mashed the egg up really well and ate very slowly, chewing very well. (Oh and I blotted the crap outta it, cuz it was cooked in heaps of oil! Blech!) And I ate 3/4 of it. I reckon about 3tbsp total. I had about 1tbsp of avocado and gave the rest to Mr. F. And felt fine, a little burpy--but nbd. But dayum, by the time we were at the polling place to early vote, I was feeling very green and felt in need of a very quick potty break. Made it through voting and home, but by then I had the cold sweats. Came home and had a very "boisterous" visit to the throne that cleaned me out! LOL. Sorry for TMI. And then I laid down and napped. I woke with my pain below the sternum that radiates through to my back. Took some liquid tylenol. And rested for a couple of hours. Now I just had my lunch meal of peach and peanut butter blueberry yogurt soup. So we'll see if I have issues with that meal. I think it was maybe the grease at breakfast? Or the avocado? Or who knows, maybe it's the egg. I will try soft scrambled tonight and see. I don't want to go back on liquids. What was the first food you put down your pie hole post surgery? -
I used to hate oatmeal. Like...sincerely, truly hate it. From it's slimy dischargey goo, to it's bug-like bits....oatmeal just sucked. I wouldn't touch it. Today, I love oatmeal. I'm not just saying that. I'm eating it right now for lunch. Steel cut oats with a little splenda, a few chopped dried cherries, almonds and pecans. often, I have it with fresh fruit. Bananas, strawberries, blueberries, peaches, apples....it all works. I would rather eat this than most things in the world....and that baffles me. I thin it with a little premiere protein and have a yogurt chaser. Can easily upgrade it to a 20g protein meal this way. Yep, it's carb heavy. But they're low glycemic carbs that don't cause spikes and it boasts lots of fiber to support good gut bugs. And I love it. Did I mention I love it? Who knew I'd be an oatmeal eating fool? Yay Oatmeal! LOL

Thank you!! Appreciate that!! I do a premier protein shake every morning, an egg and bacon or ham or sausage link for mid morning snack (work cafeteria makes this one easy). Lunch is a few ounces of tuna, chicken or egg salad with a few pickles or cherry tomatoes. Afternoon snack is Dannon light and fit greek yogurt. Dinner is a protein and little bit of veggie and then some type of snack in the evening (almonds, peanuts, etc). Dinner is pretty much the meal where I have the most variety. Other than that I'm content to be set in my ways and have the same routine just about every day. It's working so far so I figure I'll stick with it. I don't really get a sweet tooth but every once and a while I will have a piece of sugar free candy. I do about 110oz of water everyday and 90-110 grams of protein. You are so right, these board can make you feel inadequate sometimes, people are losing 80lbs in 27 days, swimming the English channel, climbing Everest, saving the polar ice caps all while eating -12grams of carbs but 1000 grams of protein a day And im just sitting here like Hi I had yogurt again and walked a mile I'm taking a break...

I would of took off way more time at work but they tie our bonus into time missed so i could only miss 3 shift to get bonus which equates to 7 days off work since i did surgery off of my last night shift. I was eating mostly pudding, Popsicles, broth so i would keep it all handy at work and just sip water often. When i went to puree, i would just bring lots of cottage cheese, pudding, yogurt and soup.

String cheese, peanuts, Quest protein chips, Power Crunch bars, and Greek yogurt are my go to snacks.
