  1. I would try to get the word of the surgeon, rather than nurse or office staff, as he is the one who will get to repair any hernias that you create. The typical advice is no more than 10 lb for sometime on the order of 3-6 weeks, maybe a bit more after 3 weeks or so, but usually nothing substantial for at least 6-8 weeks. My doc was a bit more conservative in that he specified no serious core work such as sit ups and crunches for 12 weeks. Arguably, that may not be enough for some. One of the problems that I learned about talking with the physical therapists after some orthopedic work, is that while your muscles may heal quickly and feel up to more work, the connective tissues like the tendons and ligaments don't have as much blood flow as the muscles, so they heal more slowly and are more vulnerable to being torn (and this would include the fascia that holds the abdominal muscles together, which they cut through for your surgery.) It is not unusual for a sharp sneeze or cough to cause an incisional hernia many weeks or even months after surgery. Real story here, of my sister's octogenarian FIL who had some sort of hand surgery, After all of the recovery and physical therapy, the surgeon cleared him for all normal activities. His wife, a retired nurse, called the surgeon asked what he had told him - "just that he could go back to normal activities.... " "Did you know that he is back under the house digging ditches and pouring concrete? " "Oh **** I didn't mean that!" So, it pays to go to the source and to be specific. Related to that, after my post WLS reconstructive/plastic surgery, when discussing with the surgeon what I could do at the gym and when, he told me that crunches and such loaded, bending abdominal work was out, but surprisingly twisting was fine - he knew exactly what he had done inside, and where the strengths and weaknesses were. Also, your surgeon may be able to suggest appropriate protective gear - straps or supports - that may help you during this period. But do be specific as to what you do. Good luck on continued recovery
  2. I had weight loss surgery on May 22, 2019, starting weight was 326 and I only got down to 266. During this process my body took on hormonal changes such as menopause. Right now I have sugar cravings that are seemingly out of control, I feel like a failure and that I will never lose the weight. Due to the pandemicI have actually gained weight, so I am now 285. My question to you guys, have there ever been anyone in the same predicament as myself and how did you pick yourself up to accomplish your weight loss goal? Can someone please offer some advice? I am thinking about having the bypass as I feel the sleeve was not beneficial for me.

  3. I am sooooo HAPPY to read this thread!!! I am 1 month tomorrow (op was on 10/10/20) and looking like I will hit 20lbs exactly. I actually hit a large stall on my second week ... and I was only having liquids ! Lol! I am striving for health and to reverse my prediabetic numbers... The jean and little black dress days are on the horizon somewhere lol! I still have over 100lbs to lose ... we can do it!! xx
  4. Are you using small plates/bowls? It does help with the visualisation. Very small meal on a big plate or in a small bowl looks miserable but put the same meal on downsized crockery it looks a whole lot more satisfying. I am almost 10 months out and I still use small plates and bowls. There is a new normal now, small plates/bowls, smaller meals, waiting at least 30mins after food for drinks.
  5. It takes anywhere from 5-10 days for it to come off. At least that's what I was told. I avoided my scale for 10 days.
  6. Its normal. I had surgery Oct 19. I'm still taking naps and short of breath when I'm Doing too much especially cardio. We are still healing. Wish u the best[emoji173] Sent from my SM-J260T1 using BariatricPal mobile app
  7. So, I am nearly 15 years (yes years) postop. I started at 315 and plummeted to 142 within 10 months of surgery. I was super happy but I was also sick. I didn't have energy, I looked sick...but I was SKINNY! For the first time in my adult life, I wore a SMALL! I loved and hated it at the same time. Then I was told to gain weight because due to all the excess skin, I was really underweight and it was NOT healthy for me. Well, long story short...I can eat pretty much anything and not dump. Then my portions started growing and my snacking came back. I gained, I lost, I gained, I lost...you all know how that goes. I got back up to 230 and was miserable again. I started doing VERY well earlier this year and lost nearly 25 pounds of regain, then COVID-19 struck and has me working from home. This led right back to horrible habits and not as much movement (I didn't even have to walk to my car!). The company I work for has wonderful programs to help get motion and nutrition back on track. Well, that is if you are able bodied (I have bad knees and am just trying to keep replacements at bay as long as I can) and can eat like a normal person. The PT and nutritionist had me doing things that just didn't work for me...not once but TWICE. I told them over and over I couldn't exercise on my knees nor could I eat the portions they were assigning to me. Frustrated, I started researching revisions. I found one I was seriously contemplating, regardless of insurance coverage (I was THAT desperate). I was on the verge of calling my GP for a referral when I thought, "What about going back to basics"? So, about two weeks ago, I found some sites (this is one of them!) with bariatric specific meal plans, food, vitamins, gadgets, etc. I took the plunge and ordered protein powders, protein snacks, meal replacements and changed my vitamin routine to the 1 A Day on here. I bought shaker bottles for my shakes, 15 minute increment water bottles to make me drink my water (if you knew me, you would know I HATE water), and I also cleared two shelves in my pantry for JUST ME. It's now been just over a week and I am down 4 pounds. I have so much more energy that my husband was like "who are you and where is my wife"! I have already noticed a difference in some of my clothes - no more dancing routine putting on my yoga pants! It's not easy, but I have to remember where I was and where I want to be once again! Sorry this was so long but I started typing and couldn't stop!

    Sleeve to...? Revision seeker

I had a sleeve and kept off my 90 pounds for 6 years. But! I stoped using my tool thinking since I can’t eat that much I won’t gain well for married and are small but bad then more and stretched my sleeve. Still ate well at times but because of health problems I. March could not work out and I gained 10 pounds in honeymoon and 28 since covid. Bad I know. Anyways I also had acid reflux but wanted to lose and keep off. Did the bypass and I’ve dropped 17 pounds already. I’m happy I did it. Just got it Monday and I’m in pain it’s WAY worse than the sleeve. But hey we can all get seconds chances we just have to stick to it so I’m joining a support group Monday and I’m logging all my fluids and food In myfitnesspal it’s the only way I can do it.

    LOSING TOO FAST?

800 kcal per day is a very typical number and consistent with good weight loss. Our loss tends to be heavily forward loaded with a lot of water weight loss early on - your loss rate should be slowing right about now (do a search for the "three week stall") as your body pauses to catch up. As a reference, I lost 32lb the first month, and then 15 each of the next two months, so things do slow down. (What is happening is that your body, when it goes into a big caloric deficit as it does immediately after your WLS, starts drawing of your body's glycogen reserves - basically stored carbohydrate - which takes a lot of water to stay in solution. So your body is throwing off a lot of water as it burns the glycogen. Then, when that runs out (after 2-3 weeks typically) the body has to start drawing on its stored fat (which is what we want!) but it can take a few days (or weeks for some) for the body to shift gears to do that, so don't panic if your loss suddenly stops for a while. Also, your loss rate will be lower once you start burning your fat reserves, as the fat burns more slowly than the glycogen. The glycogen burn may also be why you are feeling a bit weak and tired, as that is your quick response energy store, and you are running low. Try working in a little more carbohydrate - oat meal, cream of wheat, unsweetened apple sauce are common - to help keep those levels up a bit more. In theory, our body is supposed to burn our excess fat to make glycogen, but that doesn't always happen as quickly as we need it (this is why marathoners will "carb load" with a lot of bread and pasta the day before an event - to make sure their glycogen levels are as high as possible before they go burning it all off the next day - we don't need to go that far, but the same principle applies.) Overall, it looks like your are doing great, and I wouldn't worry about losing too fast until you are within maybe five kilos of your goal weight - if you get there withing six months, then you may need to slow things down so that you don't overshoot the mark too far; otherwise, I wouldn't worry about it. (And yes, my doc's RN also told me to cut back the exercise because I was losing too fast - but that was at six months, and about 10 lb from goal weight, and while I wasn't inclined to cut back on what is my normal maintenance level of exercise, I did start ramping up the calories to start slowing things down.)

    Insurance help!

My version of BCBS does cover WLS, but I called them anyway to confirm. It was a fairly lengthy phone call as they went over all the preop requirements. Then they sent me their coverage info so I could look it up or refer to it on my own. The approval process required 3+ months of various appointments (cardiologist, psychologist, 3 months of nutritional counseling, PCP visit, etc.) so there was plenty of time for the WLS office to work out any kinks (there weren’t any). After I had gone to all the various appointments the WLS office called BCBS to verify final approval and set the surgery date. That took maybe 10 days. I got the impression it probably goes slightly quicker in non-COVID times. With the whole process there really isn’t a possibility that I could have ended up getting expensive surgery without insurance approval, something I was concerned about in the beginning.
  14. I’ve been waiting forever for surgery. Was supposed to go in May, then got put on hold because of COVID. Surgeon wanted a Motility study done by Gastrointerologist and I had that done end of June called their office and said it was completed but could never talk to scheduling. They were taking the easy cases during the summer I was complicated. By the way I live in Colorado and my surgeon is in Phoenix AZ! Our insurance is Banner Health and there are no “Tier 1” hospitals here! I did my seminar in September 2019! I get a call 2 weeks ago saying did you ever do you your Motility test? I was so mad because I called twice about it! They finally go the results. The head surgeon has to handle my case and I have a problem from surgery 2 years ago a surgery to repair a para-esophageal hernia where they did a Nissen. I do not have normal peristalsis- muscle movement to move my food and the sphincter at the bottom of esophagus doesn’t relax! So it’s called a Nutcracker Esophagus! She too my case before the GI conference Foregut to discuss it and they agreed that I’d be better off with the surgery and the issue should normalize. Has anyone had this condition prior to a Gastric Bypass surgery and how are you doing now?
  15. Too late to join in? 10-26 surgery, lost 19 pounds since I got home.
  16. I'm only 10 days post op, so pretty close to you in the process but I've not had any troubles getting liquids down. I never felt full at all with liquids. I started adding yogurt in yesterday and it's the first I've noticed starting to feel a little "full" before finishing the cup. I can tell you I have a LOT of head cravings but no true hunger I don't think. That having been said, I'm frigging sick of liquids. Soo ready to move on to purees Monday. Hi I am 11/10 the day after you and I would be happy to be a motivator for one another. Maybe we can setup a zoom call weekly or something like that,

    2 weeks post op

I'm 10 days post op. I struggle with fluids when I just do water. I'm still on full liquids so I've been doing a couple of protein drinks a day, broth, and then getting the last little bit with water. That's probably not very helpful, but if you hear better pass it on to me too! Sent from my Pixel 2 using BariatricPal mobile app

    How do you Cope?

This is awesome. I'm a huge crafter too...I say this while I'm surrounded by 10 unfinished projects lol! They are all pretty big ones, so maybe I need small projects or something I can do in 20 to 30 minutes. I like to make costumes and upcycled art.

    Anyone for October 2020?

You are wise. There are just so many factors affecting small fluctuations in weight day to day so weekly is the wiser choice. I My personal journey has me up and down one to two daily only to lose 4-5 by weeks end. I'm on the week three diet right now and I am curious what will happen when I start introducing food. I dropped 10 during pre-op with a total of 34lb since starting the process. Something else I used to mention to clients back in my personal training days (many, many moons ago obviously if I had a VSG), is to be sure to weigh at the same time every day. People tend to weigh less in the morning, but you can also do evening. It is less about the number on the scale than the differential from one weigh in and the next.
  21. I’m newly sleeved (10/26) and just wondering if feeling nauseated is normal. I am not vomiting but do have a lot of gurgling going around in my stomach and a real sense of nausea. Still in fluid stage and trying to get protein down. Some days better than others. Could it be dehydration? Also, I’m still in some pain/discomfort on the right side incision where they pulled my stomach out. Is this normal? I find it difficult to bend over or twist at all. I thought it would be better 9 days out.

    Anyone for October 2020?

I had my VSG done on 10/29. The first few days were bad with the gas, and me wondering if I made a huge mistake. I got my drain out yesterday and have felt so much better. During my first couple of days of feeling like I made a horrible decision. I Google and found this site, and am so happy I have. Sent from my SM-G781U using BariatricPal mobile app

    6 weeks post Sleeve surgery

Look at it this way, you have lost 25 lbs total. It is most likely fluids. Don't obsess over the scale too much. I am about 10 months out and have had 3 week stalls, i gained 5 lbs one week, then lost 8 lbs and gained 3 the next. Try to keep a mindset that it is a life long journey. We didn't gain this weight overnight and we can't lose 8t overnight either. Work on developing good habits to replace the bad ones that caused us to gain the weight.
