ALMOST 5 MONTHS POST OP - STRUGGLING

yes weight loss definitely slows way down after the first few months. Also, you are a revision - and revision patients almost never lose as fast as those with virgin surgeries. are you sticking to your plan? If not, do whatever you can to get back on track. If yes, then you're in a stall. Your honeymoon period is likely not over yet. I had long stalls after I was eight or so months post-op, and every time I thought my weight loss was done, but then it would start up again. It finally stopped at 18 months out (but that was fine because I was at a normal BMI by then)

    Sleeve to Bypass Revision

Hi Ashley - I had the sleeve in Dec 2012, had vomiting, acid reflux and gerd. I threw up vitamins and couldn't each much but crackers and stuff like that, diet was shot. I lost down to 186 and gained it all back. All of these issues have caused damage to my lower esophageal sphincter (it no longer closes) and my stomach lining as well as a hernia. I had tests run in August, September and October and I had Sleeve to bypass revision on Dec 3rd. I feel so much better!!! I am holding down food, vitamins and protein properly. I'm able to lay flat to sleep for the first time since my sleeve, I was at the point where I did not care if I lost another pound as long as the reflux/gerd and pain would go away...and it mostly has! 30 lbs down again to boot! My surgeon warned that I may lose slow or not at all, but I am still early into this new tummy. Hope you get a resolution and some relief.

    Drinking too fast?

If I remember correctly, you're a revision@elcee ? We don't tend to get the same level of restriction as virgin surgeries. I've never had a problem with fluids, can chugalug with the best of them. Sent from my SM-G930F using BariatricPal mobile app
  5. I am 4 months and 3 weeks post op revision from Sleeve to bypass. I just feel like I am struggling and in a rut with losing. I have lost 54.2 (39.2 since surgery) which I am happy with, but my weight loss has really slowed down big time. I don't know if i am stalling or if my weight loss is done. I only lost 4.2 lbs last month and only 1.6 lbs so far this month. The last 2 weeks i have gained and lost same 2 lbs over and over. I am trying not to get frustrated and down about it, but i am down about it. I know we aren't supposed to compare ourselves to other.....BUT i see others with similar starting STATS as me and they are breezing right past me with their weight lost. I hope i am just losing slowly, or maybe stalling, and i will continue to tick away to my goal, my body just does not seem to want to cooperate. I do great with my eating during the day but i struggle with night snacking/grazing which i am working on, I know this is an issue for me that i need to control. My cravings and head hunger seem to be strong in the evening. i am just worried because my weight loss "honeymoon" is ticking by and i am so discouraged that my body is stuck at this weight and i won't meet my goal. I guess Just needed to vent some today. This too shall pass.... I Hope!
  6. Well not quite but it certainly feels like it. I'm finally home from hospital after spending 5 nights there rather than the planned 3 - 4. Went in for surgery last Thursday. Removal of band, repair of hiatus hernia and revision to RNY. The surgery took about 3 hours and was apparently pretty standard. Came round in recovery , felt ok and was taken back to my ward. Still felt ok. No real pain or nausea which is always a bonus. Had my glass of ice to suck when I suddenly started to feel really strange. Hit the call button and when the nurse came in told him (or her can't remember now) that I thought they may need the crash cart. By this stage my monitors had started going crazy as my BP was dropping through the floor so the first Met call was placed. Most of the nurses from the floor came rushing into my room and I was convinced I was going to die. All I could think was no how stupid am I , why did I do this, what on earth will my Mum and kids and hubby etc say. They got me partially stabilised and I stopped feeling dizzy and then I started shivering like mad ( another sign of hypovolemic shock) . I kept telling the nurse I was cold which was hardly surprising since they had me mainly uncovered but she was trying to concentrate on getting a cathline in and it wasn't working as my veins had all collapsed. 2nd met call placed and a couple of ED docs came in as well. They were ultrasounding me to see if they could find some blood loss and my BP was down to 75/45 My surgeon was contacted ( I think he was still in surgery at this point) and it was arranged to take me back to theatre urgently. At some point I apparently had a CAT scan but I don't know when as by that time I was very groggy and I am sure my recollection of the true events is severely impaired.I have since heard that they went back in , looked for a leak , cleaned me up etc. I don't think they found anything significant but I don't know the full details. I recall waking up in ICU and thinking oh I'm still alive which was a relief but I still wasn't confident that things couldn't change. Friday sometime I was deemed fit enough to be transferred back to the normal ward. Again I was doing fine on clear liquids, had no pain and wasn't using my Fentanyl pump excessively but I definitely felt like I had been hit by a bus. Zero energy and like a washed out dishrag. That could be expected after major surgery except I am usually the one that is bouncing around the ward in record time amazing everyone. I felt so good after my hysterectomy that I kept getting out of bed to go somewere forgetting I had a pain pump attached! Physician ordered more blood tests to check my HB levels, apparently they were still really low even though I had been given 2 units of blood in the second surgery so Saturday evening I received another 2 units of blood. My temp spiked slightly whilst the first lot was going in but the on call Dr told them it was OK to continue. I was lying there think yep I'm not out of the woods yet and being anxious is probably not good for recovery. By Sunday I was getting a bit frustrated with food as I was still on clear fluids , I think the extended stay confused the hospital kitchens and the weekend staff.Especially as by this stage I had been told I had to do a NO 2 before I could go home and obviously that wasn't possible with what was in me. I refused to take the lactulose as last time it had me in agony for hours and wasn't going to go through that again. I did behave and take 2 doses of Movicol on consecutive days which eventually had the desired effect. I also find it annoying that as a bariatric patient the kitchen brings all your food for each meal in one go and then they don't look happy when they have to take melted jelly and sour yogurt back a couple of hours later! We won't talk about that yogurt it was vile, sour, unflavoured drinking yogurt, it wasn't even palatable when it was fresh. I finally started some Optifast yesterday and was hoping the protein would help boost my energy levels. Sadly it didn't. The best meal of the stay was some delicious cauliflower soup. On Sunday my Physician ordered a Physio check on me but when they tried to contact her she had already finished her shift!!!!@@@@###( Does make you wonder why you pay for a private hospital). Got to see her yesterday and she just checked on my breathing exercises, made sure I was walking ok and gave me tips for when I got to go home. My energy levels by then were still zero, if I managed to do the recommended walking it would wipe me out for the rest of the day. I have no idea how people walk off their gas pain so its a good job I didn't really have much. I climbed into bed to try and get some sleep and then realised I could hear voices under my pillow. Can you imagine the state of my mind by now? I concentrated on the voices and then realised it was my breathing, some of the worst wheezing you have ever heard. I called the nurse in and told her and I think she made a note but nothing else happened. They change shifts at 9.30 so it was probably 8pm ish when I raised it again and said how frustrated I was. Surely it wouldn't have been that hard to get someone to check on me. Maybe nurses dont know how to use stethoscopes, thats fine but there must have been some Drs in the hospital somewhere. Then the **** hit the fan as the person in the room adjacent to me had a seizure so they had an emergency situation to handle which meant they went home late which meant that despite their promises they didn't call and speak to a DR. I am sure if they had one would have telephonically ordered a blood test or an xray or told them to give me some salbutomol. I swear I slept for a max of an hour last night. It was so uncomfortable. I couldn't get into a position where I felt I could breath properly. The wheezing was loud enough to wake the dead and I had the sensation of popcorn popping in my throat! Half way through the night the nurse must have realised there was a problem as she came and put the O2 back on me. I was terrified. I even messaged my hubby in the early hours telling him I was scared and asking him to get there as soon as possible in the am so he could be there when the drs did their rounds. Dr this morning was lovely, he couldn't understand why someone hadn't called him. He decided it sounded like Asthma( which I haven't formerley been diagnosed with) so ordered me to be nebulised. It seemed to help so I have now been sent home with an inhaler and spacer. It still seems pretty bad when I lay down so may have to try and sleep sitting up for a few nights. I don't regret having had the surgery now it is behind me but had I known how close things were going to be I would definitely have thought about it a little bit harder. I thought that I had done my research and that the odds were good but maybe I was a little too blase.I will definitely only be having future surgery if I really have to and even then I shall be absolutely terrified. Hope I haven't bored you all with my long story and if anyone else got Asthma after surgery would love to hear from you.
  7. Your best shot at it would be Dr. Keshishian in Glendale. He is one of the handful of docs capable of doing the very complex RNY to DS revision, and while you don't need that level of revision, a good DS oriented surgeon is a good bet for a VSG as the DS is based upon the sleeve, so those docs have been doing sleeves much longer than most bariatric surgeons. When I had my VSG done 7-8 years ago, I went up to SF to have it done as there was no comparable level of experience in LA at the time (Dr. K was still mostly practicing in the Central Valley then.) He will probably advocate that you revise to the DS, as that does generally provide better and more durable long term results, but the decision is yours. If your band failed mechanically rather than on weight loss or regain, and you otherwise lost and maintained well with it, then the VSG should do just as well for you, but without the mechanical issues. If, on the other hand, you did struggle to lose enough with the band, or regained with it, then the DS is well worth considering.

    ❤ JANUARY 2019 CHALLENGE ❤

Clichéd but my greatest support is my hubby. He's never known me as anything other than morbidly obese. He met and married me when I was around 125kgs, and has been there for me even when I grew to 153.5kgs. He's supported me through a failed lapband and when I raised the possibility of revising to bypass he didn't hesitate to say yes even if it meant we'd have to self-pay (still waiting to hear back from the HSE for a reimbursement, bureaucracy *sigh*). He's encouraged me at every kilo lost and joined me walking every evening. He's the kindest, gentlest, funniest, smartest, handsomist person I've ever known and twenty years after we married I still love him to bits, alhamdulillah. 9. I moved from New York to Los Angeles and looking for a new bariatric surgeon in Los Angeles area. Anyone have a strong recommendation? I had lap band in New York (2012) and recently had to have it removed, but I am looking to revise to sleeve once my stomach heals. Love my NY doc, but I want to meet with some local surgeons in LA instead of flying back to New York. Thanks all for the input!

Lapband to Sleeve - low BMI

I will be following your progress :) I think my revision will be in March tbd exact date. To be honest, I know I need to just relax, but I am terrified of gaining weight in between the removal and the revision.
  11. Hey guys! I’m looking for the best self pay surgeon for a band to sleeve revision. I am seriously considering Mexico because I’m not rich. But this thing HAS to go!

    Normal to stall this early?

I’m the same! Finding it very hard to get the scales to move downwards! I was revised from a band to a sleeve at the end of October and revisions can find it tougher to drop the weight! It’s so depressing... just keep focused on protein and water and it should work! 🤗
  13. I Had Gastric bypass in 2004 and on Nov 29 2018 I had a revision I gained 100pnds back!!! The recovery was alittle longer than my first Gastric bypass and also the weightloss is slower I Don’t regret it I would do it again

I will have to self pay for my revision, but I know I need the tool to help me maintain weight loss. Good luck and keep us posted!

    lap band to gastric sleeve

Why did you revise to sleeve? Were you having issues?

    New to the sleeve

I just had my band removed and want to revise to sleeve. I have to wait until my stomach heals. You’re still healing and getting used to the sleeve so hopefully you’ll feel better soon. Are you in pain or discomfort?
  17. What are the main differences in how you feel with sleeve vs band? I had band removed and was so accustomed to pain from being stuck. I plan to revise to sleeve once my stomach heals but curious about hunger feelings and feeling full.

    New to the sleeve

You feel like you shouldn’t have done the sleeve revision?

    February 2019 weight loss buds

I had the lap band, it tangled in my intestines, was always sick! Revised to a sleeve Sept 2016, anesthesiologists decision The hardest part is the liquid diet! Hang in there, you will lose The band list me 65# then the sleeve another 85#. Only 20-25 to go.
  20. Did you gain after band removal? How is your hunger with the sleeve revision?
  21. I currently have a Lap Band and I just can’t take it anymore. I have stuck episodes to the point I pass out. I have gained 25 lbs in less than 6 months. It just isn’t working for me anymore. I have been approved for a revision to a sleeve. I’m wondering if anyone has any advice on Dr. Mario Almanza. Thanks in advance.
  22. Keep us updated as you go along with your surgery recovery. If you do have to have revision I'll be happy to welcome you to that side of the street, no matter what , I'm still your friend.

    February 2019 Sleevers?

Getting sleeved February 20, got lapband in Mexico in 2009 and revisioning to sleeve! Super excited! Dr. Leport in Southern CA this time around!
  24. You might be better off revising to Bypass. That's what I have and I love it. There are three other people in my life that are up to ten + years out with RNY and wouldn't change a thing. Good luck!

GERD, EGD results, and Sleeve vs. Bypass?

Yes, a lot of surgeon will not perform the sleeve on band revisions because of erosion, and other issues. The sleeve is not right for everyone, or forever. Luck of the draw I suppose. Get well soon!
