    NSV, my favorite so far.

Be prepared ladies because it will continue to happen! Even at my age! LOL Since losing weight I have changed my hair and bought new, stylish glasses. Sometimes it can be overwhelming. But sometimes it's just cute. A few weeks ago as I was leaving my nephew's football game a very nice man (about my age) noticed that my shoe was untied and told me about it. I knew it was, but I was too tired from screaming and jumping up and down at the game to do anything about it. Well, I was approaching the stairs to the parking lot and the very nice guy says "I will tie your shoe for you, I wouldn't want you to trip on the stairs". And he bent down and tied my shoe! That was soooo sweet. I have to mention something else though, one of my neighbors outed another of my neighbors as having a crush on me. The poor guy (who parks next to my car in our car port) was so embarrassed, I didn't see him for 3 days (I usually see him everyday). But, when I did see him he had cleaned the area around my parking space and told me that he did it for me. I said "thank you" and he said "anything for you". Trust me folks I have ZERO interest in this guy. Add to that he is TEN years younger than me. I am a little uncomfortable when I run into him, but he has been very polite. Until recently I hadn't dated in 5 YEARS! Hope you are all enjoying your new lives!

    Hair Loss

I've been banded since the 19th of Jan 2011 so nothing has happened so far, but my identical twin sis had the Ru-N-Y done about three years ago and she's lost a lot of hair and now wear wigs we're 66 and both diabetics...not sure if that has anything to do with it...I too have been drinking Protein drinks in hopes I won't lose my hair. How long did you have to wait for your first fill and other then Protein Drinks what else can I take, I'm still in the full liquid diet stage. Congrats on your weight loss what is your goal? Hugs twnbrn2nd

    Hair Loss

Protein, biotin and zinc are said to be the keys to helping with hair loss. But I have heard it takes months to turn things around.

    hair loss

I actually did cut my hair and it did help the hair loss. I also donated it to "Locks of Love"....wonderful program if you have at least 10 inches to spare and now letting it grow back out...seems to be going good so far.

    Need friend in Kansas City

I know some that did eat baby foods but personally YUCK! and a lot of my band friends threw stuff in the blender like roasts and said they tasted great again I just couldn't get past it. Once I switched over to the creamy/mushy phase at the 14th day I was all over the various cheese Soups if they had veggies in them I either gummed them to oblivion or fished them out. I couldn't be bothered to do the whole blender thing like I should have. I also made a variety of Protein puddings by mixing whey protein powders with instant sugar free puddings. (Chocolate, Cheesecake, Lemon or Lime, etc..) Later I discovered an even healthier option where I would blend Cottage Cheese until smooth and replace most of the milk called for in the pudding recipe with that instead. It had a much higher protein to carb ratio and tasted great. Most people think it sounds disgusting but really it tastes very creamy like you made it with whole milk (no hint of salty at all) Oh and if you freeze the puddings for a while before you eat them and stir them up they taste like eating soft serve ice cream. Yummy. Right now one of my favorite protein rich foods is Cottage Cheese with some Yogurt and a Cherry or Rasberry Crystal Light bottle Water packet stirred in. I've just been feeling too lazy to take the time to blend up the puddings and mess up the kitchen. But I'm not sure if cottage cheese would be considered "soft" enough for the 14 day mark. This stage was SO HARD for me but I just kept repeating to myself I can put up with anything for just a couple weeks and being self pay I couldn't risk the possibility of having to pay for any complications much less the loss of money with more time off work without pay. Speaking of work, one of these days I may need to talk to you about the whole teeth whitening thing. I'd love to do it but always assumed too expensive. Tried one of those home kits once and was VERY sore and dissapointed though I managed to get my money back. I personally think I would need veneers to do any good on my teeth. (though I'm not nor ever was a smoker)

Do YOU Do Da BLOG Thingie?

Hi everyone: Yeah I think blogging is yet another GREAT way to socialize and network with other people who've either had the surgery or are considering it. I tailor the content of my blog around those who are considering it by giving them a wealth of information they might not otherwise think of digging up themselves. Add video to it and it's content which the subscriber can take with them as I always link to iPod/Quicktime compatible MP4 videos which I upload to BlipTV (The YouTube Channel is a seperate link, yet YouTube has a HUGE and influencial weight loss community on there - More so than parent company Google realizes). My blogs and their posts aren't all in text nor are they all in video. In fact, some posts are in audio using my iRiver. It all simply depends on what I have. That said though, the one thing I'd like to do is put my weigh-in on video (So far, I've only been able to get as far as using still photos captured by the camera from my phone). I tried it once, but the cheapo $100 cam from Radio Shack wouldn't work. Well anyway, I figured I'd start this thread notso we can pimp our blogs, but rather so we can share each other's journey just that much further. Cheers

Do YOU Do Da BLOG Thingie?

Nah, I'm too busy and I cant be bothered. I also tend to approach weight loss as black and white. Eat less, move more and stop acting like a fatty boombah. There's not much to blog about in the face of an attitude like that. I dont sit around navel gazing and analysing my motivations etc. I'm not against it, its just not the way I approach things. So my blog would be very short. It would just be "good day, ran for an hour, ate well' or "ate a packet of choc chip Cookies today, must do better tomorrow". And I would probably vent about all the people who annoy me because they're not as decisive as I am, lol, and offend half the planet.
  8. Yeh, that's what I thought. It just seems like the doctor wants to sell another weight loss program afterwards for a weekly meeting and to see a nutritionist but when I looked at other Dr.s they either say follow ups are free or their post op meetings are free.... Tommyd, Did UHC cover your tests (xray, ekg) before hand and physch eval and seeing nutritionist? Did they cover follow ups and any supplements after?

    Will we lose our laughter?

Well, just thought I'd check in and see how the thread was moving along... nice to see the feedback! It sounds like we handle our insecurities in different ways... for me, I'm with Dianechef, Susan and Puddinpie. I am always the center of attention around my friends and family. I keep the party going with laughs --- almost compulsively! Maybe this is just an insecurity creeping out to draw attention to something besides my weight - who knows! I do like the Jammin & Losin theory of once a sense of humor, always a sense of humor. I also like the note that the humor will only get better. I hope so! Although this may be a defense mechanism - I don't want it to ever stop! It makes my life entertaining.... there's usually something to find humor in - even in the worst circumstances and that makes me happy. Dianechef's story gives me chills! I would miss the joking around if it was to stop or if my friends and family were to treat me any differently. For those of you who have been hiding that personality and now it is starting to creep out with your new weight loss - I'm so happy for you! I don't think there's anything in life much better than that! Kim

    1st Fill

Hey Teresa! Congrats on the weight loss. You will have to keep us up to date on how your hunger is now that you got a fill and how your eating changes too. I've been told that once you start getting the fills things really change. Keep us up to date!

4cc BANDERS, WHERE'S YOUR SWEET SPOT???

I don't think that I'll have the most common situation, but I'm at 4cc in my 4cc band and I finally get what everyone who has good restriction is talking about! I can eat about 1/2 cup of food at a time, and combined with my exercise, it really got the weight loss rollling. Before this, I felt some good restriction at 2.7cc, which was the total amt. after my 2nd fill, and that was good for about 15lbs. But, that restriction faded a bit after a few weeks and I was stuck a 1 cup of food eating again, struggling to lose. I've searched the posts on this issue and I've found a couple of people who are like me and have needed the significant fill, but by the same token there are plenty that have lost consistently with much less! Good luck and try to be patient and hopeful during this time of "bandster hell."

    1st Fill

Had my 2nd fill today. I lost 6lbs in the 3 weeks since my last fill. I can definitely feel this one. I sipped the water in the office just fine but once I got out to the car and took a drink from my water bottle, I could feel that one. Not painful but uncomfortable. I'm having cream of chicken soup for dinner and maybe a protein shake later if needed. I go back in 3 more weeks. Oh, he put 1.5cc so I have a total of 3.5cc now. He had a little more trouble finding the port this time but it still didn't hurt. I'm right on target with my losses but I've been hungrier so we went ahead with the fill.

    Hairloss

It's normal...just the shock your body is going through. I've been taking biotin that is suppose to help with hair and nails, but I'm still losing it by the handful. As long as we don't go bald, we'll be okay. It will grow back.

    Hairloss

I'm 3 and half months post op and I have noticed that my hair has been falling out more then normal. All my vitamin levels are good. Is anyone else experiencing this and if so is there anything that can help?
  17. I'm a bit post post-op (about 20 months after a VSG) and things have been pretty unremarkable since the initial loss. But recently I've had two episodes out of the blue, unlike anything I've experienced before. The first time, I thought I was having a heart attack. A vague nauseous feeling turned into a chest tightness. It was like the wind was knocked out of me and I couldn't breathe beyond tiny gasps for about 20 minutes. Long story short, it wasn't a heart attack and all cardiac tests showed my heart to be working perfectly. Needless to say, it was scary as hell, and the anxiety that I might be having a heart attack was enough to give me one! But then it happened again, a few weeks later. This time I really tried to focus on what was causing me distress. I think that it was a muscle spasm, focused in my upper abs and/or mid back. Maybe the diaphragm but it really felt more like a tight band wrapping around my lower ribs, forcing me to exhale; the diaphragm would force an inhale. Stretching and massaging helped a little, but was really hard to do in the moment. I'm really worried now about it happening while I'm at work or out in public. Has anyone else experienced something like this? I'm wondering if my GI tract triggered a spasm for some reason.
  18. This is probably a good question for the lady veterans out there. Call me vain if you must but I am really worried about what losing a lot of weight over a short time will do to my face. You know every big girl has heard it, what a pretty face, well I don't want to suddenly be smaller with a wrinkled or sagging face? Any tips or products that you could suggest would be greatly appreciated . Thanks Ladies!
  19. Thank you for your response. I really enjoyed your description of the "ideal restriction." I feel the verysame way. I have not seen it described the way you have described it. I had my first fill a month or so ago and I felt even less restriction. I cannot get my second fill until September 4 because my surgeon is going on vacation in August. My surgeon told our support group that he believes restriction from the lap band begins on the second fill. I weighed myself last night at the gym and I GAINED 5 pounds! I cannot believe it. I thought I was eating somewhat more in volume but 5 POUNDS! My surgeon also said at that support meeting that the lap band takes time to really kick in with restriction and fullness. I had my appetite taken away at the time of the surgery and placement of the band but I notice that the fills are the tools that restrict you later. I had my friend at work calculate your weight loss from kilograms to pounds. Excellent loss! You obviously are doing things right and I will watch out for your future posts. I need all the help and support I can get.
  20. I agree with Julie. I felt pressured to have my first fill despite that I was losing weight. After my first fill, I have not lost ANY WEIGHT. In fact, I gained a few pounds. My bariatric surgeon said at a support group meeting (weeks after my first fill) that he doesn't not expect any restriction of food until the second fill! My second fill is in a couple of weeks and I'm looking forward to it and to start losing weight again. I would suggest not having a fill until you start slowing down with losing weight or stop losing weight. If I had to do it all over again. That is what I would do. I am not craving food but I have little to none restriction on the amount of food. To succeed with weight loss, we need the added tool of restriction with a fill.

    Little weight loss!!!!!

hi i have been banded for 10 months now with only 18lbs loss. i have a 4cc band filled to 4cc with no restriction.i went for 10 fills over the 10 month period. sometimes when the dr. pulled back on the syringe the proper amount would be there and sometimes it wouldn't. i had an ugi in may which showed no restriction as per the radiologist. the nurse practioner said that everything look ok i need more fill. i am an x-ray tech and would often taken pictures of the band and also fluoro films too just to see if i have any restriction and nothing. i do have an appt. with the dr. on aug.5 to see what is going on with the band. i do want to maybe discuss bypass. any thoughts???????:confused2:

New Job, Time Off for Surgery

If you are hired with the first 90 days being a probationary period, your employer can legally terminate your employment. The chances of this happening may depend upon the type of work you do and if you can help ensure that your employer's business does not suffer losses while you are gone. As the top director at my work, I always appreciate employees who think about the company during times of their personal need for time off. Not everyone would agree with me, but I think telling your direct supervisor that you had a pre-planned personal medical procedure, and you need to keep the appointment, but would like to work with him/her to minimize any inconvenience to them is one way to approach this. If it came to a choice between VSG and having a job... These days, 4 months being out of work is nothing compared to a lot of people. Congrats on your new job! Your found one quickly.
  23. Hi, all! Today I went for all my preop tests at the hospital: chest x-ray, EKG, bloodwork, etc. The preop nurse screening me said she has not seen much success with the band. I asked her what that means--not much success. Did it mean that they have not lost 100lbs in six months? They've only lost 30lbs in a year? What? She just said that they had lost some but not a lot. I told her that studies show that it takes a good 2-3 years with the band to be at the point where the gastric bypass folks are in six months to a year. "Oh," she said, "Oh, yeah. That's true." So--I've had the leader of my support group and the preop nurse be quite discouraging about the band. I might be crazy, but I think if I lose ANY weight with the band, it'll be worth it. To say that people aren't doing well with the band because they've only lost 30lbs in a year--well--that's better than staying at the same weight--and that's certainly better than gaining 30lbs. Why are we as bandsters (or future bansters, in my case) seen as "failures" or "not doing so great with the band" if we don't lose 100lbs in a year. Don't you think that any weight loss is better than nothing? My lap band surgery is this coming Tuesday, the 18th at 8:00am. I hope that it's worth it--but to me getting just 20-30lbs off will be worth it--hopefully that weight loss will encourage me to do more and more...Prayers for this Tuesday would be greatly appreciated!

5 years old and 200 lbs

Just because the medical profession may have already ruled out a medical cause for this child's abnormal size, does not mean that she's just overeating and that's all there is to it. Anyone who believes that is an ass. Obesity and related disorders are not just about loss of self-control. We may be in the infant stages of being able to understand this very complex problem, but hopefully one day some of the keys can be unlocked and the lap band and other extreme measures that people take to be "normal" will be passe. Can you even imagine the trauma this child is having to endure? Going on the Dr. Phil show to have her parents confronted and having plain-spoken Dr. Phil put in his two cents, with his audience cheering him on, could be very detrimental to this family. I hope that it doesn't turn out that way. I usually think that Dr. Phil is spot-on with his assessments. However have any of you tried to read his book and commit to it for weight loss?

5 years old and 200 lbs

This is a terribly sad story. I can relate to the kid because I was one of those kids who matured at an abnormally young age. I had my first period two months after I turned ten and by the time I was 11, I had reached my full height, 5 ft 6, and was menstruating monthly. Ugh! Because my parents were both comparatively short, slender, and were very elegant brunettes I felt like a giant blonde Baby Huey. And remember that at the time I was growing up the received wisdom was that kids kept growing until they hit 16. I felt very freakish indeed and I was a very, very unhappy child. Of course eventually all the other kids caught up with me and in many cases surpassed me. And I finally lost my baby fat. This did not, however, remove the terrible emotional damage that I suffered because I suffered through an atypical growth spurt. Though I was a normoloid until I hit menopause I never really lost the sense of being a great big giant fat grrl. The psychological damage for a young person who finds her or himself marginalized by virtue of being clothed in a physical envelope which does not conform to the norm is terribly painful. When I started gaining post menopausal weight I got into the habit of morbidly joking with my GP about going onto the E(cstasy) diet. She would twitch with horror, I would snicker, and then I would reassure her that I had no intention of hauling my carcass off to a rave. This got to be a regular routine for us. Nevertheless, I can understand why a younger, less ironic, and more emotionally engaged individual would turn to the world of drugs as a method of sorting out the messy business of weight issues. Drugs promise possible emotional oblivion to this business of emotional pain and they also proffer the hope of weight loss as well. Drugs are very charming for folks who find themselves in extremis. This is why people end up goofing with drugs in the first place, isn't it?
