I too have facial hair. It does not go away with weight loss. I go to an electrolysis and have it removed. I waited to long before I went to have it taken care of. It has been over 2 years and I am still going every 3 weeks.

Well hello restriction!
KartMan replied to KartMan's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ok, so it seems I was a little over-filled. Even several days after the fill (which was on 5/13) I wasn’t able to keep most solids down or I could only eat a tiny amount of food. While I liked the idea of tiny meals, it didn’t feel very good and didn’t really improve my weight loss. On Friday 5/22 I went with my sister to Tijuana to get her band at Dr. Ortiz’s OCC clinic. While he was counseling her I explained my situation to him and he said I was at risk of a slipped band  due to being overfilled and recommended they have a look under fluoroscopy while I was there. I don’t usually get my fills under fluoroscope so this sounded pretty intriguing to me. I got the fluoroscope and could see that even the barium was going down way too slow so they backed me off from 4.5cc to 3.7cc. I feel so much better now. I still feel restriction and I am not PBing at every meal. BTW, for anyone considering doing their surgery in Mexico I would highly recommend Dr. Ortiz and the OCC ! The facility was top notch and his entire staff was fabulous, in fact it seemed cleaner and more organized than most hospitals and doctors offices I have been to in the US. Dr. Ortiz was fantastic, very empathetic and super charismatic. -
From what I understand my dr only submitted my initial weight and my last visit weight. I’d check with your surgeons office. If it’s the same for you it will set your mind at ease to know a little fluctuation is not going to derail you as long as that final weigh in is at or under goal

Weight Watchers has nice scales. Don't know the cost however.

So I am pretty excited that I got my consultation date for April 28th at the Brigham with Dr. Robinson. I am very nervous though, of course. My best friend came with me and took work off to come with me to my consultation appointment. I LOVE her support. I m very healthy besides my weight. No high BP or cholesterol, etc. I did have 2 knee surgeries 5 years ago which never healed perfectly because of all my weight so I could not work out and strengthen my muscles. So there really is not any reason for them to say I am not a good candidate. I am at 245.8 lbs (my highest EVER) and am 5'5" so my BMI is 40.8. I am crossing my fingers and hoping that this all works out for me. I am so excited for this journey to start. I think my nervousness may stem from my excitement but there is not anything I can do except wait for the appointment. I'm going to have to call my PCP and make sure they send my referral because I don't want to show up and them say "Oh we didn't get it" [yikes] If anyone has had Dr. Malcolm Robinson at Brigham and Womens in Boston, Ma let me know how your consult went and any words of advice. Good luck & congrats to all. You all deserve it!

A week after surgery, your clothes won't be tight anymore.....Since you'll be on clear liquids, you'll drop weight like crazy.
-
Well, good job. What THAT means is that your stomach has recovered from surgery. After you get your lap band, you don't really experience THE lap band until you start getting restriction (through Adjustments, aka "fills"). SOOOO....where you're at is NOT bad--you SHOULDN'T feel different yet. Your doc will probably wait a certain amount of time, just to make sure you're all healed up, then you will start going back to her for your fills. You will continue to go in every month or couple of months until your level of restriction and weight loss gets to a "sweet spot"---or the point at which your food intake and weight loss are at an optimum level. The sweet spot is really determined by YOU, but your doctor helps you with it. Congratulations!!!

Hi All! My name is Melissa. I am in the very early stages of wls. I have my initial consultation appt. in two week. I will be having the surgery (hopefully) through Duke University Hospital. I have struggled with weight all of my life. I go from a size eight (160 lbs) to a size 18( 220 lbs) every 2 years or so. I am a fantastic dieter and exerciser! I am horrible at sticking with the plan. I recently compiled a timeline photo from the past 7 years which really helped me realize that wls is the right decision for me. (the bottom right was taken Christmas 2012) I have a bmi of 36 with several comorbitities. I want to share the photo for anyone who has been through a similar situation. I hope that everything pre-op does smoothly. I have found this site very helpful in my decision.

Tish - This is what I do to try and make my head (because its not my body...its all in my head) not feel as though I am depriving it (and maybe it will help you with eating too many carbs): Every 2 weeks, I give myself one treat. And its a good one, like my favorite ice cream or something. I don't go crazy with it (like I don't get 10 scoops with extra hot fudge plus an extra bowl of whipped cream on the side or something) but its enough to satisfy me and give me something to look forward to next time. Additionally, I work out 6-7 days a week for 30 minutes and I keep my calories at or under 1000 or so (calorie intake varies by person, but thats where mine is at). So if I spend an extra 500-600 calories splurging on ice cream once every 2 weeks, I don't feel too bad about it and I can work at least half of those calories, if not more, off at the gym. That works much better than eating carbs everyday. Also, however, during this time a lot of people gain weight. I really didn't eat very many carbs at all before my first fill, and during "bandster hell" but I know a lot of people eat mashed potatoes and such on the mushy phase and most doctor's think thats fine. So I wouldn't worry too much about it at this time. Good luck!

I had no restriction in the beginning at all and have yet to reach my sweet spot. So fduring the first few fills I could still really chow down. So much so I was scared I wasgoing to bust the band. My doctor said that was quite normal and that many people actual gain weight intially after being banded. That I just had to be patient and do my best to eat healthy at least and once I got close to my sweet spot I would soon not be able to eat the volumes that I was eating. I was glad he told me because I really nthought restriction would happen straight away which it certainly did not.

Hello all! I am 1 year post op- did well lost 110 pounds but have stalled> i have been in the gym for 1-2 hours a day 7 days a week and logging my intake and nothing helped. The one thing I wasnt doing was sleeping, I would get about 3-4 hours a day on average. I work nights so I am up all night and then running with the kids all day. Finally I have been exhausted and sick and i laid out of the gym for a few days, came home from work and just went to sleep for a solid 6 hours. Finally started losing weight again!! For me 6 hours of sleep is a big accomplishment, i know some who say they cant function on less than 8 or 9 hours. I have 3 little kids, i have been functioning on 2 hours for years> just wondering on average, how much sleep does everyone get and do you notice a big difference when you get well rested vs sleep deprived??

Help - cheated post op
Melissannde replied to ylb113's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
According to a bariatric nurse that I know, these are symptoms of a dilated pouch and/or slip: Being able to eat more, weight gain or failure to lose, not feeling full, heartburn, and reflux. I'd consider these signs as over a period of time, not just one occurrence. I've had all of these (except weight gain) at one time or another, but not night after night or day after day. If I had the signs for more than a few days, I'd call my doctor. Relax. Follow MOST of the rules MOST of the time and things should be OK. -
Do you still act like a heavy person? what i mean is walk the same, stuff like that. i lost 30 lbs i lost alot of weight in my tummy area when i sleep on my side my arm falls it doesnt rest on my tummy. so i dont know where to put it i get neck pain and back pain trying to figure out my body

I buy myself a charm/bead for a Pandora bracelet for every 10 pounds I lose. My the time I reach goal, the bracelet will be full. I've also started with massages, manis, etc---but not attached to any particular weight goal. I just realized I deserved the good treatment

So i am now 19 days post op. in my mushies stage. I am not currently working so I am home all day. When I wake up I can not eat, dont even want to at all. so I drink a protien shake. then I am hungry at about 1 or 2 so i will eat 1/2 to 3/4 cup of whatever mush protien. then i will eat again around 6 or 7. then around 9pm my stomach growls and feels so empty I am starving! I feel hungry, its not just head hunger, its a little soon to eat again but really i am hungry!!! So every night nw i have been eating cream of wheat with sf syrup to sweeten it, made with milk and i also add beneprotien to up the protien content. it helps but i am still hungry after that. I try waiting an hour and then drinking fluids to help, which it doesnt really. I am also not losing any weight despite not going over 900 calories. I am getting the right amount pf protien and working on the fluids right now im at like 60. Am i doing something wrong, am i hurting myself by eating at night? if i dont eat i cant sleep because i am hungry. I am not losing at all, and i am exercising 3-4 times a week since i was released to do ....ack! HeLP!

Tricare- San Diego Surgeons?
arlynator replied to BandedJenny's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi! I have tricare prime and have been searching San DIego for doctors that are willing to set me up or refer me to get a lapband. I am 31 yrs, 5'1, 221 lbs with mild apnea, prehypertension, prediabetic. All doctor could tell me is "lose weight.." I need someone who understands why it's painful on my knees to exercise and why my depression has taken over me and now I'm eating my feelings, and out of breath after tying my shoes. Maybe I should try the CTO too. -
Rad Portland Chick With A Life-Changing Date Of March 27, 2012!
NWgirl replied to MoreThanJustaPrettyFace's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi there! I am also in Portland, over in SE but hoping to move over to SW in the next month or so. I am getting my surgery done at Legacy Weight Management Institute. I am 23 (turning 24 in June) and cannot wait to start this journey! I started this journey with a Fiance, but it appears that has gone all kinds of wring and I am now single. Go me! I do have a wonderfully supportive family that lives in the area and are all behind me to get this done. They just want me to be happy. I am going in tomorrow for my consult with the psychologist, the nutritionist, and the physical therapist. I went last week for the welcome group and the psych test (a whopping 370 question scantron). If the psychologist clears me, I will be able to schedule my surgeon consult tomorrow. I am hoping to be banded sometime in February... I love sweets, but not enough to sacrifce my weight. I was recently diagnosed with hypothyroidism, and secretly hope that it can account for some (not all) of my weight issues. Last year I did 6.5 months going to the gym 5-6 days a week and eating 1200-1400 calories a day and was only able to lose 35 pounds with a daily deficit of at least 1000 calories... Very discouraging and I'm hoping the band will give me the extra boost I need Sorry for the history lesson. -
Rad Portland Chick With A Life-Changing Date Of March 27, 2012!
Longleggs replied to MoreThanJustaPrettyFace's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi PrettyFace! I too am begining my weight loss journey ... a bit further south than Portland, actually closer to your home town of San Diego. I currently live in Orange County California and am looking to have my surgery sometime in the summer of this year. Right now I have already done the inital consult, EKG, Endoscopy, blood work, and thankfully made it past the two sleep studies. Scheduled to have my gal bladder removed on Thursday 1/26/12. I have a 6 month waiting period with my insurance company (Cigna OAP) and basically that started about two weeks ago. Current weight of 301 (the biggest ever) lbs 6'1" and incredibly active with a full time job (usually work about 6 days a week 12 hr shifts), three kids, two dogs, two snakes, and a really loving but needy husband I dont normally eat a ton of Snacks or even tear up the buffet, I think my biggest issue is eating unhealthy fast food places because I lead such a busy life. This entire process has been a whirlwind since I decided to make the call and at sometimes find myself wanting to back out of it because I am unsure I have made the right decision. I am ALWAYS second guessing myself! Enough of my story...I do want to wish you the best and hope to keep in touch as I would really like to see how your doing since your surgery is scheduled about 3-4 months before mine. -
Not on any antacid but very impressed with your weight loss! Congratulations!

Back from vacation
juliansmom2003 replied to Whillow's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Welcome back, Whillow! Hope you had a great time! (Be happy--no gain after a vacation?? When was the last time we could say that LOL) I just realized we were banded around the same time and have almost the same amount in our bands. Too funny. We are losing at the same pace too! Pretty cool! -
Question about Sugar.....
BetsyB replied to Megg40's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sugar alcohols aren't 'bad' in terms of what they can do, weight-wise; your body will not absorb them. BUT--and it's a big but--they can wreak havoc on the gut. Many, many people are very sensitive to them---and even those who are not particularly sensitive generally have to limit their intake of sugar alcohols lest they experience cramping, gas, and diarrhea. Preop, I bought a box of Werther's mini butterscotches--the sugar-free kind. There are 5 in a serving---and eating just one (for a total of <3 mg sugar alcohol) made me so so so sick that I won't even touch the stuff now. Your mileage may vary---many people don't have problems, as long as they are careful with their intake. Hopefully, you'll be among them. But since you're so freshly out of the OR, I think that, in your shoes, I might postpone experimenting until you feel up to ...well, dealing with possible consequences. I'd hate for you to add cramping and diarrhea to the mix at this point. I'm glad you're doing so well postop--have fun at the movies! -
I was wondering if after losing the weight, is the port visible? Is it possible to wear a bikini without seeing the port, and can you feel the port.

I never worry about the carbs in healthy vegetables. Vegetables with higher carbs like winter squash, potatoes, etc can be enjoyed but in much more careful moderation. It's rarely the vegetable carbs that will slow your weight loss, usually it's the "white" carbs such as potato, rice, pasta, sugar, flour etc. As for when you can add in raw vegetables after surgery....I think 3-4 months sounds right. I have to check though. I'm with ya on that one..I'm craving a salad!

Yep, you are doing fine. You will have starts and stops, but the inches continue to drop away even when the pounds are not. Your body needs adjustment times in between chunks of weight loss. Relax, and weigh once a week when you are in a stall, so you don't get stressed.
