    All of my December sleevers...

Curvy jones how is the weight gain for some after sleeve and bypass explained? I'm only 4.5 months out and still battling gastritis and inflammation so my restrictions are more than most and my diet is 98% full liquid but I hear stories of ppl gaining 30 40 50 even 100+ After several years post op Weight gain is explained by eating around your sleeve, usually. You can eat the wrong things that are slider foods, high in calories, and you can eat more often. It would be super easy to eat over 3000 calories a day if you did that. What I've found now is that I have to watch every calorie. I do follow the rules for the most part, but a little indiscretion at this point is a big deal. When you are at or close to goal, you don't have much wiggle room. A few extra calories every day really can pack on the pounds.

  4. I too was sleeved on the 9th and since surgery I have lost 11lbs like you. I lost some on the pre op diet so I am happy with my total loss so far. What I am most pleased about is that I have broken the triple digit mark (I now weigh less than 100kg!! and am only in double digits - btw I live in Australia I know what you mean about being so busy, or maybe too busy, my kids are aged 10, 3 and 11 months. I only just went back to work today after surgery but cant complain having had such a good break/recovery. My 10 yr old and my biggest child (husband) have been super helpful, so that has taken the pressure off. But picking up my 3 yr is hard, he is too big and heavy so soon after surgery. I am a total shocker when it comes to the scales as I weigh daily - although there isnt a loss every day, it is consistently going down. The scale and I are friends now cos its going down as opposed to only ever going up. I think though, if you're experiencing incision pain, that's definitely a cue that you need to take it a little bit easier on yourself. Take care and all the best on your journey! That's awesome you have lost the same as me! I have actually seen the scale go up and pound or two but then it drops back down. It is devastating when that happens and it freaks me out! I have decided to not weigh myself until Friday! I will become obsessed if I weigh in every day and don't see it move.. argh! I think part of my weight "gain" here and there is also because I am having trouble with constipation. TMI perhaps but it's apart of life, especially after WLS. Miralax is becoming an every day thing for me! I think some is Water retention too as I haven't been getting in 64 ounces each day. I didn't really get that in before surgery! I've never been a big drinker of anything so it is work for me to get that in!!
  5. Precious Vsg and Miss Mac, Thank you so much. I have looked over my lab work and I know that my calorie intake needs to be increased especially in the protein area. I was not and currently am not able to tolerate protein drinks and powders, I do not eat protein bars like Quest bars etc because my tummy can't handle anything real sweet and heavy textured so I have to always eat my protein. I devised a plan to increase my caloric intake and increase my carbs to around 60 per day, I am also upping my protein to 80. I buy all high protein items in order for me to not feel as though I am missing out on anything by not being able to use protein supplements. This is a hard road, no amount of nutrition classes can prepare you for the real journey, I am a medical professional and I get lost in how our body works sometimes. I really was not as worried about weight loss but more worried about weight gain. I do believe it was because I was scared to take in a lot of calories and not realizing I need those calories. Looking at my labs I know that my protein definitely needed to be upped. I wish us all well. Peace to you all.
  6. Recycled, I am not an obsessive person, I do not weigh myself several times a day. I do not know why you would say that?! I weigh once a week because I was told too by my bariatric team, I was originally only going to measure myself. So I was only asking because I am gaining weight and as I said I was not worried about losing massive weight I was only concerned about the weight gain part of it.
  7. You have already answered your concerns. I believe as you said, if you are contemplating quitting smoking, you will be more capable of handling any potential for weight gain now rather than closer to you goal weight and maintenance. Good luck with your choice. Denise said: On the other hand, if the weight loss is easier in these earlier months, maybe that will minimize any potential weight gain from quitting?
  8. Greetings everyone, I am a smoker, and I'm thinking about quitting soon. I'm 9 weeks post-op, so I have a long way to go with my weight loss. I'm concerned that: A ) it will be too much of a shock to my already confused body, and B ) that it will halt any further weight loss (or even cause a gain). And while I know the benefits of quitting outweigh any perceived disadvantages, I'm wondering if I should wait until I'm closer to my goal, staying focused on one thing at a time and maximizing this honeymoon period with the sleeve. On the other hand, if the weight loss is easier in these earlier months, maybe that will minimize any potential weight gain from quitting? I have a follow-up with my surgeon on Thursday, so I'm going to ask him, but I'm curious if anyone here has quit smoking in the early (or any) stages of post-op, and what were your results? Be well… D
  9. 90 grams of protein=no weight loss, 65-70 I lose a pound! I was put on my normal diet 6weeks post op, I struggle to get in the protein.I didn't lose any weight since that day, 1 week and 3 days, I took in about 65 yesterday and lost a pound as of today. I also don't feel myself when I force that amount of protein. I am very nervous about sticking to what I was told. I am drinking lots of water (liquid, including protein shakes) about 70oz. a day! I don't want to cause trauma to my body or risk weight gain. what is the least you can do without risk?

    Okay, THIS is interesting...!

I went to Cleveland Clinic and spent a couple of days going through tests. The dr ( saw so many I don't remember which one ) told me the stomach is an organ. Organs malfunction or develop problems. He also said it wouldn't cure the problem but help with the side effects. ( weight gain) I can't help but believe the weight gain is the side affect to the problem, correct the problem and the weight gain might disappear. I do believe science will get there but the sleeve will do the trick until then.
  11. Yes, there is approval to go through. Your first stop is to a wl surgeon and tell them if U have any acid reflex, weight gain, throwing up, etc. it was nice at my surgeons office they have the machine that you can watch swallow test. I went back cause I started gaining weight and discovered my esophagus was dilated and would require the band be removed. The scope was next to see what the band and everything looks like. After that it was submitted to insurance. I hope this helps.
  12. Congratulations, you look wonderful, thank you for your picture and motivation. Can you imagine how great it will be on the next months for you... How are you feeling? Everything going down okay? How was.the pain? I'm soon to get my surgery and truth be told, feel like hell with a thyroid condition that caused more weight gain, now insulin which made it worse and can't breath too well. Going to my cardiologist appointment soon. Hoping this surgery can make it all better. Good luck and keep us updated.
  13. Linda, Hello... I was browsing around and was so glad to see this post. I am not sure if I mentioned this before (when we have talked) I am a diabetic on insulin. In November 2012, I had been rushed to the hospital for DKA and was in diabetic shock... I was literally out of it for 3 days *which i am still unable to recall*. Doctors told my husband at that time that my sugars were so high they were literally off the charts and I was lucky to be alive. When the #s finally started to register it was 815. Long story short, I truly thank God I am here. Anyway, the reason I told that is to lead to the following. With that episode happening, my previous endocrinologist thought perhaps I was type 1 diabetic, (instead of type 2,as previously diagnosed in 2003) they ran the specific tests and I was told that I was not type 1, but definitely type 2. Time went on and I am no longer seeing that doctor and now have a new endocrinologist.... and well seeing my history on record and blood sugar issues, he also wanted to test me to see if I was type 1. Longer story short, at my last visit I was told that the blood tests confirm that I am type 2 but I also have traits of type 1 diabetes... which makes my case of diabetes different.... He further told me to inform Dr. Uchal that more than likely i have impairment going on with my pancreas (which of course is nothing new as diabetes effects the pancreas) but he then told me that with my upcoming bariatric surgery, not to expect to be off of my insulin completely... (which didn't shock me, as I know how the slightest intake can make my sugar go up). I say that full, long story for this reason... in finding out the recent info, I started to worry about the "what if's" again... thinking what if this surgery will not work because I am remaining on insulin (as insulin can cause weight gain). It truly started to upset me so much to where it prompted me to search for info on this site... (that is how I found the above post and your reply) May I ask, "has the insulin hindered any of your husband's progress/weight loss?" I am trying not to worry but I want to be prepared. I told my husband my fear would be that I do the surgery and that the insulin sabotaging my results, especially since I have a lot of weight to lose.... (my apologies for the lengthy story...lol... but any reply would be helpful..) Sincerely, Angi

    Pregnant with my band

I gained about 28lbs and lost it all, breastfeeding will help you lose the weight faster And don't focus on your weight gain now, just as long as baby is growing healthy and you're doing well that's all that matters

5 wks out and stll in stall!

Are you drinking your fluids? If more solid food is tough for you right now try going back to protein shakes. Also could you be backed up? Constipation can slow things down even cause weight gain. I also would recommend shortening your walks but making them more frequently like 4 days a week!
  16. It's all about moderation. If you love Chinese, eat it once in a while. That won't hurt you. I went to a Japanese/Chinese buffet with my son and DIL last night. I'm OK in buffets now because I can manage the amount I eat. And I'm fine in a place where I can get fish. I don't eat the Chinese food when I'm eating there....I stay with the sushi and sashimi. Less rice that way. I had one plate of food....not three. And the one plate was not piled to the ceiling. Even so, I'm up about a pound today. No problem. I expected it. The soy sauce, even cut with Water as I do, has so much sodium that I know I'll gain weight. But it's water weight and will be gone in a day or two. You can eat out anywhere as long as you are smart about it and manage your expectations. Don't eat fried foods...eat veggies and Proteins. Easy on the Soup...again it's loaded with sodium. If you weigh yourself often, don't be surprised to see a temporary weight gain. Good luck, and keep us posted.

    Weight gain

I got married October 2013 and the year leading up to it was so stressful. I think that had a LOT to do with my 30lb weight gain. I had not been sleeved until after the wedding, but just wanted to share with you that I truly think the stress did it to me. I know you probably dont have much extra time to exercise and workout because you are probably super busy. My suggetion to you is to try to do a liquid diet for 3 or 4 days to restrict your stomach some and then do low/no carb for the time remaining up until your wedding. I tried that before and was able to drop 40lbs in about 2-3 months (before my sleeve). I would have fruit for Breakfast and then just eat meat and veggies the rest of the day. I'm not sure how much time you have until your wedding, but best of luck to you and congrats!
  18. Hi everyone, I am 2 1/2 years post op and I've gained 35 lbs. I'm getting married in June and instead of losing weight I keep gaining. Has anyone had the same problem? Does anyone know how what stage should do start on so I can shrink my stomach again? Any info would be appreciated.

    Scared mom

Britt. I am a mother of 3 and I am 32. My whole life I have never been bigger than a size 12 (typically a size 8-9) until 6-7 years ago I began to gain weight and it didn't stop until I was a size 20. I am now 12 days post op and I dont regret my decision. My husband had mixed emotions but I did what I felt was best for me. As far as you having another kid, I have a friend at work who is 1 year post op (the sleeve) and she is 5 months pregnant. She has not had any significant weight gain but it is still so soon after the surgery that she is being monitored closely. I believe that after you have done all your research try support groups to see if they can offer you any insight. I wish you nothing but the best.
  20. Prior to having my band placed, I had a significant history with GERD, and was told by my surgeon that complications were very possible. Because of that history, when my reflux got worse, I was ruled out as an acceptable candidate for the sleeve because of my GERD. After 22 months I did have to have my band removed to get some relief from my reflux. Two different surgeons warned me that I would have even more complications with the sleeve, and advised if I opted for revision surgery my only option would be bypass. So far, I am doing well with keeping my weight stable without my band and no weight gain since December. I hope you feel better....you did not mention if you were taking Nexxium. I was taking it 2X a day, and it did help the most.

    Feeling ugh today !

Ddsweighin, don't stress over the weight gain. Perfectly normal the first month post-op. Stay on your eating plan and it will come off soon. Your body's been through a trauma, and it's healing. After the first three weeks I started to lose at a good pace. Two weeks post-op I developed a head and chest cold, and it hung on forever. I'm still coughing sometimes and I'm now six weeks post-op. I'm pretty sure the duration of this cold had something to do with being compromised by surgery, having a breathing tube, etc. I'm prone to bronchitis in the winter anyway. It's getting better, but slowly. If you're truly worried about any specific symptoms, call your doctor. Really! They can't help if you don't. But feeling generally lousy from time to time the first month is par for the course. For me, walking and lots of Water improved things. The days I felt crappy I was usually dehydrated and didn't realize it until I logged my calories, water and exercise in MyFitnessPal. Good luck.

    Why did you have surgery?

It is so refreshing to hear all of your stories about mates supporting you, etc. I'm afraid that my story is not so fairy tale like. I was in a very difficult marriage and my husband was diagnosed with a personality disorder 6 years into our marriage., There were so many ups and downs that the stress caused me to eat and that is the way I dealt with my emotions. Over the last 5 years my weight went from 144 to 212. Along with the weight gain came sleep apnea, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, a hiatal hernia and GERD. WTH? Who new being fat would lead to all this. I'm only 5'1 feet tall so it has caused a strain on me and I just feel horrible most days and fake my way through it. Well after being told that all I do is sit around and eat cupcakes all day and told that I was not sexy anymore, I left my husband and decided to take control of my life. I am turning 40 tomorrow and wanted to find myself again and get back to the person I recognize and not this stranger I stare at in the mirror everyday. Surgery is scheduled for 5/12 and I AM SO EXCITED! I wish everyone here luck!
  23. You are doing Great... 30lbs is something to be proud of!!! Are you keeping track of what you actually put in your mouth? you might be surprised by your carb & fat intake if you are not keeping track. Make sure you are eating Protein first & you are getting all your Water in... & make sure you are walking or doing some kind of excersice every day. Try to do 3 days of just Protein shakes... it could jump start you back into losing weight... But dont beat your self up, everyone goes through these types of stalls. I did at 6 weeks - ugh it was awful... and gained 5lbs i wasnt even eating that much food. but it too passed... I dont get my period any more - but even though i dont, my body still goes through the cycle as in weight gain etc... and i never knew this till after surgery... so i know come the 20th to the 30th... I STAY OFF THE SCALE - Good luck to you!! Keep your chin up, you didnt gain the weight over night, its not going to come off that way either

    Sweet tooth

Sweets were one of my weaknesses before surgery. I am 11 months post-op and experienced only one episode of dumping. It was because I ate too much. I do my best to stay away from sugar. In general, sugar substitutes seem to satisfy my sweetness cravings. I maximize experimentation. I have noticed that when I ate several homemade Christmas Cookies and candy this year, I saw a weight gain. So off the cookies and the weight fell back in line.

    Why did you have surgery?

I have not had surgery yet, but am finishing up the last of all the pre op requirements. I expect a date will be set any day for surgery. I am doing this because 13 months ago I was told by a cardiologist that if I didn't quit smoking and lose weight, I have a life expectancy of 8 years. It took 7 months before it sunk in enough to quit smoking and a 30 pound weight gain following the smoking cessation. Three months later, I made my first appointment to see the surgeon. I am doing this to live! I have already wasted one year, I refuse to waste more.
