Hello! I've been researching information about the lap-band and feel very strongly about having the procedure done. I'm 32 yrs old, 4'11 and weigh 220 lbs, this is a lot of weight especially for my height!!! I haven't always been overweight, it seems after the birth of my daughter 12 yrs ago, the weight kept piling on. I've tried several diets and even taken pills to loss the weight but i would only drop about 10 lbs average. I know some of you can relate but I'm really ready for a change and hopefully become successful in achieving my goal....................

Congratulations on your new date. Also congratulations on losing 50 lbs. Way to go! You already are a lot healthier with your 50 lb weight loss. You'll be even more healthy once you get the band and lose even more weight. I'm a few days in front of you. My surgery is this Friday, 9/17/10, just 2 days away! I'm nervous and exciting! Your surgery date is right around the corner, too. Best of luck to you! -

Thanks so much for the reply. I will definitely message you oh and I'm having my surgery at Hillcrest Hospital in Greenville SC Can I ask what was has been your average weight loss? -
My story is probably very similar to many people on this site; fat guy can't lose weight, tries new diet, loses some, gains more back, rinse and repeat. Several people in my life have had bariatric surgery, to include my wife and daughter. After yet one more failed attempt to lose weight, I finally decided to go for it. My weight was averaging around 248 before going through the process; on surgery day I was 236. My BMI was under the recommended 40, but nature felt the need to bestow me with the quartet of comorbidities; high bp, high cholesterol, sleep apnea and diabetes (didn’t know I had this until they did the blood work for my surgery). I had surgery on 29 January 2014, and have been progressing at a really good pace. My doctor didn’t want to put me on diabetes medicination because I was so close to surgery; he wanted to see what the numbers looked like after. On surgery morning my blood sugar numbers were crazy high, 276, on 16 February, 18 days after surgery, my sugar levels were 90. I’m very happy about that. I’ve lost 24 lbs in 20 days, that also makes me happy. I’m also averaging 1 to 1.5 miles a day, walking, on the treadmill. Guess what. That also makes me happy. I know that I’m in the “honeymoon” phase right now; the plateaus will come, the weight loss will stop and my progress will be measured in months rather than days. That’s why I’m using the time now to do things right. I’m changing my eating habits, making exercise a way of life, and trying to change my overall mindset about food. This surgery isn’t the be-all / end-all of my weight loss struggle, its one arrow in my weight loss quiver. This is a lifetime battle that I’ll continue to fight. I’ll have my setbacks, they’re bound to happen, but I’ll keep moving. Well, that’s my story. I look forward to interacting with the folks on this site, it’s one more tool to help me succeed.

Hair loss after surgery
Matt Z replied to Boujee_Susie's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Not everyone will experience Telogen Effluvium, but *ANY* shock to your system, even a fever can trigger it. Biotin won't stop it, but it *might* help limit the appearance caused by the fall out. The shock of surgery, drastically reduced calories, protein, etc will cause more hair follicles than normal to enter their rest phase, Telogen. So it's not that your hair is falling out exactly, it's that a larger number of follicles have entered the rest phase than would normally do so, and with the larger quantity doing so at about the same time, it gives the appearance of thinning hair/hair loss. It does go away. By all means take the Biotin (I do) and make sure your protein levels are where they need to be at (as well as your water) and you can hope it doesn't effect you much. But hope is really all you've got. You can use rogain as well, but this won't stop the Telogen phase, it just assists in the regrowth. Nothing out on the market now, will prevent Telogen Effluvium, they only helps reduce it's appearance /effect. -
I promised myself when I first started this process that I would remember to post good news so I'm here to report I met my first goal. I have lost 60 pounds in about 4 1/2 months and I feel like a new person. I am amazed at the things I can do now that I couldn't do 60 pounds ago. Just this past weekend I was hopping with my 4-year-old daughter and said to my husband, "I"m hopping! I never could hop before!" I also notice how much easier it is to get up off the floor when playing with me kids. It is these little things that make all the challenges so worth it! Going for a mile walk used to seem so long and now it seems like a short walk. Next goal is "onderland"! Will post soon!

Congrats! amazing loss.

Thank you all for the feedback. It makes sense that the Doctor would base his estimate on all the factors that would contribute to weight loss and a realistic goal at that. I’m just so psyched I hope this Covid business will settle down so those of us on a waiting list can get in for surgery.

Can anyone recommend a book for helpful tips to help during and after the sleeve surgery ?

Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies has some good information that I found helpful. -
Wow Congrats on losing so much! Thank you, I am thinking I would rather take the risk of the surgery then to get diabetes or any life threatening health problems. I am blessed to not have gotten diabetes. I have a doctors apt next week and am excited to speak with her about the lap band. You were young getting your lap band, did you tell your friends/family did they notice the rapid weight loss how did you deal with the people around you?

If weight loss were available in such a form, the entire world would be a normal BMI!

Insurance Preauthorization
faithmd replied to lafsalot's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Sorry, if it is in the contract in writing that it must be a 12 month supervised program of weight loss, then that's it. I had to do it, my insurance required a 12 month MD supervised weight loss program and I had to have a 5% loss of my excess weight in that 12 months. The loss is to show your committment to the change. In my case, the 5% loss would have totalled 9 lbs. They also required me to visit MONTHLY and maintain regular attendance, miss a month and the clock starts over! In that year I had another health crisis, and ended up actually gaining 17lbs on top of the 9lbs I needed to lose (they don't look at your highest weight, they look at the weight your doctor records when you start the clock on the 12 months). I then started to lose some before my 12th month, but was still up by quite a few lbs. I had letters from my internist and my cardiologist saying it wasn't my fault and that the gain was because of my medical condition and meds I had to take. The insurance company didn't care, I still had to lose the weight I gained, PLUS the original 9lbs. So I guess the answer is no, there is no way around it. Make sure you call your insurance company and have them mail you a copy of their requirements so you have them in writing. Study them and make sure you will be able to meet each of them (like my 5% excess loss, monthly visits, etc.), call and make your appt now and get started. Is it required to see an MD for those 12 months, or would a program like Jenny Craig suffice (VERY important to find out the distinction!)? Make sure that your doctor documents EVERY MONTH not only your weight, but what you are doing to try to lose weight. It can be as simple as documenting that you are eating more vegetables, that you have started walking 30 minutes a day, that you cut out sweets, that you are trying Atkins, whatever. But it MUST be documented EVERY MONTH. Sucks, I know. I was denied because I didn't lose the weight and all total it took me 15 months until I got covered. Had I known that was what was going to happen, I would have taken a loan and been a self-pay with Aceves or Rumbaut or Ortiz in Mexico. When I switched to this ins company I had been told it was a 6 month requirement, only to find it was 12 months. By the time I got into it, then denied, I got so mad I decided those f&%k#$s were going to pay for this surgery come heck or high Water. I wish you both luck, get started NOW! -
I had my surgery on Nov. 25, 2008 and have lost 30 pounds. The weight loss has been very slow but I'm trying to stay optimistic. Thought it would be nice to have someone to chat with who actually understands all the ups and downs of living with a band. I'm a teacher and out for summer right now. I'm one of those "eat when you get bored" kind of people. I've had 8 adjustments so far. I've had an annoying pain in my right side every since the surgery. It comes and goes. My doctor says that it couldn't be related in anyway to my band. It's not "female" related because I've already had all of that checked out. TMI! (too much information) Anyway, just wondering if anyone else has had similiar aches and pains.

Introducing myself after lurking for months! 2 months post op
kippers replied to kippers's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Thank you everyone for the friendly welcomes! I should have clarified that I was 243 when I started the process, and came in somewhere around 233 when I had surgery- so the loss isn't as dramatic as I first made it sound. It is exciting to feel restriction. One thing that is helping with the urge to eat is adding sugar-free flavorings to ice cold Water bottles (it's super hot here right now). I've discovered Wylers light singles to go in raspberry and (for the moment) they are delicious! I've never been big on exercise, but now is the time to really jump in. My 9 year old wants to do Wii Fit with me every night, and that may just be the ticket during this busy season, and a bonding time, too! Thank you for the words of encouragement. I can't even imagine making it to a size 4! Gail -
I don't have enough restriction
greytz replied to ColoMom4372's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You are in what we bandsters like to call "Bandster Hell". It is the point before you get your first fill and tightened up. Restless is right, your food is passing right through your band at this point. This is the time when your body is healing and you shouldn't worry about the weight loss. I wouldn't eat the farm of course but it is pretty normal not to lose during this time period. I was very careful and paid a lot of attention to what I ate. I still do because I am not quite at my sweet spot and still have the capacity to over indulge if I really wanted to. -
I too decided on the band. i wanted less invasive and a slower weight loss. you have a better chance of exercising and tightening the loose skin. But good luck and I'll be rooting for you

A little concerned about it -- I just don't want to fail - I have failed at many weight loss attempts and I do not want to fail at this !! Encouragement would be appreciated.

Hi Jae, Welcome to LBT. Good Luck on your weight loss journey. -
Hello -- I've just discovered this site & am looking forward to hearing more @ your experiences! I'm new to the whole idea of WLS, and especially VSG -- but after much research & upon the advice of my Doctor, believe whole-heartedly that this is the best option for me. I was told 4 weeks ago that I needed total knee replacement surgery (we thought that I'd just been dealing with a knee injury that wasn't healing...!) -- and that my doctor wouldn't perform knee replacement until I'd lost a significant amount of weight. Knee doctor referred me to Dr. Ramiro "Sonny" Cavazos @ The Texas Center for Medical & Surgical Weight Loss. Had my first appointment with him + Nutritionist & Behavioral Health on 5/26/11 & am now doing 3 months of medically supervised weight loss as per my insurance company (already down 23 lbs!) & impatiently hoping to have a surgery date the end of August / beginning of September 2011. Motivated & very excited! Highest weight : 328 May 2011 Current weight: 303 Goal: 150-ish

Question For Gastric Sleeve Veterans...

I think you're doing great! You can see my loss stats in my signature. I generally get around 800 calories, more on exercise days. I do aim to keep net carbs under 30 grams, though it has been higher over the past couple of weeks with some holiday treats. I start to panic if the scale hasn't moved in a week, but then it does....
