My post op instructions were to use milk of magnesia if needed. I never needed it then. At 6 weeks I added an iron supplement as instructed by my nutritionist. ( two flintstone chewables). Now I mix 1/2 capful miralax into my morning Greek yogurt 2 to 3 days a week and that keeps me at a bm every other day. My doctor said it was best to just dose it to achieve regularity and didn't need it every day.

I would check with your dr recommendation but I have had yogurt since my surgery. That is what they served me on day 2 in the hospital. NO fruit or chunks is the criteria for the yogurt. Are you still on a mostly clear liquid diet? Again check with your Dr but I can give you the run down of the list of acceptable food I have if you want

How many calories are you eating?
Beadingnurse replied to crosswind's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I try for 800 calories a day but rarely make it. Usually end up betwen 600 - 750. My doc prefers 3 meals a day with no Snacks but I can't seem to do that. I can't eat enough at any one time to get in enough calories so I am having 5 or 6 small mini-meals a day and that seems to work for me. It is hard to get in enough Water though as eating this frequently means I am often in the "hour" wait after eating solids when I can't drink water. My main sources of Protein are, chicken/turkey deli slices, string cheese, cottage cheese, greek yogurt, Atkins Protein shakes, refried Beans, tuna, egg, sardines. -
Post Op Day 4- Hungry And Depressed
mmorral replied to MamaT's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I sleeved on 4/23. I am not hungry since I am full liquids According to to my log, I was 250 Cal yesterday and close to 500 today. I got in all my Protein and close to all my liquids . I can't wait until I can have yogurt, applesauce, and other things so I can add to my food bank. I am looking forward to getting rid of shots I have to give myself though. My BMI was 50 so I had extra to help in not to blood clot with these shots. -
I was sleeved April 27th. I was still having problems then Saturday I made a smoothie with a protein shake, Greek yogurt and strawberries. And I had cherries for a snack. I went 6 times Sunday morning. Haven't gone since I tried Miralax again last night. MOM helped me too but my doc likes Miralax.

Not an expert on this, but from what I've read and heard on here you should be on clear liquids and not yogurt. I think that is the second stage about 2 weeks down the road. I would stick with protein drinks, popsicles, hot broth, water, koolaid (unsugared) and not go to yogurt yet. If I'm wrong please someone who is banded jump right in. I just think she is trying yogurt much too soon.

I'm Back and Banded but sooo hungry
gadgetlady replied to IrishAnna's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
The first 3-4 days I was so swollen I had trouble with even drinks, too. I wouldn't have dared try yogurt. Protein shakes were difficult but I could get them down. Also try diluted cream of wheat or rice or diluted baby Cereal. For some reason that slid down prety well, while I absolutely could NOT get Jello down! Drink, drink, drink. And teeny-tiny sips. I'm one week out now and still had trouble with jello last night. The worst part is when there's a traffic jam -- something trying to go down and a burp trying to come up. I realized it was mostly with the Protein Shakes, I think because I blend them up and they get a lot of air in them, which then has to be burped up. So keep it SLOW. The faster you drink, the more air you swallow. -
6 weeks out - stalled for last 3 :(
InfiniteButterfly replied to browngirlthin's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
For my protein, I eat eggs, refried Beans, cheese sticks (sometimes wrapped in a slice of light deli ham or turkey if it's a meal rather than a snack), salmon or fish in general, a bit of chicken, quinoa (sometimes a tbsp as a side dish if I'm still hungry after my meat portion at dinner). I currently don't eat anything (other than the SF popsicles, which count as a liquid) that doesn't have protein in it, because I just don't have the room. I hit between 45 and 60 grams of protein daily at 5 weeks out, which the doctor said is fine at this point. He is more concerned with me staying hydrated and said the protein will come as I'm able to eat more food (and he said VERY firmly to not rush this point but take it very slow...which is okay with me) My sleeve doesn't tolerate milk products or Greek yogurt, but it's fine with cheese (but not cottage cheese. It just tastes funky post-surgery. I loved it pre-surgery). Protein shakes make me gag because they're so sweet...although I did okay with the Chike coffee protein when I was still full liquids. For more protein/recipe ideas, check out According to Eggface or the Bariatric Foodie. They have a lot of suggestions (that's where I go to look for recipes) -
Not losing a great deal of weight on the pre-op diet
Bufflehead replied to C2CFOREVER's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Why cheese? If you are going to eat dairy, IMO yogurt is a healthier choice. And why fruit instead of green veggies? Green veggies are much lower carb. All that said, losing 1 kg in a week is great IMO. Does your bariatric team have a specific goal that you must meet? It sounds like it, from your post, but personally I think expecting more than 1 kg/week is a high and kind of cruel standard. -
Travel exactly one month post op
RoadToMe replied to Mzerica619's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had my sleeve surgery 1/20/16 and I took a 3 day trip to Las Vegas on 2/11/16 (3 weeks post op). Now, I know everyone recovers differently but I was completely useless for the first 2.5weeks. I was worried about taking my trip but started to get some energy back a couple days before I left. I completely understand what you're going through. I apologize in advance, this may be lengthy, especially since it's fresh in my mind. I think the most difficult thing is going to be food. At three weeks I was supposed to be on a puréed diet. That was incredibly difficult while traveling!!! I am having trouble with Protein shakes post op, no matter what I try I just can't stomach them. That would have been my go to, but I just couldn't do it. I ate mostly yogurt and eggs and those 1 oz packages of peanut or almond butter (I can't remember the brand. It's all natural, no sugars or anything). But, I also ate things that weren't puréed. I didn't have a choice in some places. There just aren't many options on a puréed diet. I did get sick once from eating 2 French fries. I just didn't want to spend so much money on an entire meal when I really shouldn't have been eating any of the foods they had to offer and would only be able to eat a couple bites anyway, and I figured French fries were soft so I just took a couple from someone else's plate. Not a good idea! No more fried things for me!! It didn't help that our hotel room didn't have a fridge or anything, so I couldn't buy yogurts or anything to keep in the room. I did, however, make sure I had a Water bottle on me at all times. I'm not sure what stage of the diet you will be on during your trip, but I would definitely consider what your options would be. As far as rescheduling your trip, and I'm assuming that this is just for pleasure since you're wondering about postponing, I would do some research online or by phone. Look at where you will be staying and local restaurants and any outings you have planned. Most places offer menus online, try to find things that will work for your diet. Even call them and see if they will be accommodating. Also, look at who you will be traveling with. Do they know about your surgery and diet restrictions? Are they going to be supportive and understanding? I think if you will be able to find foods that will fit your diet you will be fine. I had energy back by that point and besides having trouble with food, I had a phenomenal trip. Good luck with your surgery and have fun in Hawaii! -
Cheating on day 6 post op
Shaydi.Laine replied to DebraM04's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ok, first off the hunger is probably real. Mine was. I was hungry right after surgery and didn't stop being hungry ALL THE TIME until about 2 weeks post op, then things got better. This is different for some people, the lucky ones are never hungry, the unlucky have to deal with hunger. That said, I get so frustrated reading posts from people who cheat early after surgery. This is a hint at epic failure down the road. If you cannot control yourself while healing from having your *stomach cut out*, you are going to be hard pressed to control yourself once the hard healing is over. Seek professional help instead of cheating. There are plenty of ways to alleviate hunger without making stupid (sorry but crackers, chips, crunchy anything, hard to digest meats, things with seeds, popcorn etc are really freekin' stupid) choices. I can't believe some of the things people decide to shovel down their throats while their bellies are healing!! STOP IT ALL OF YOU!!! I thrived on yogurt, pudding, and cream Soups. I made it through, so can anyone. Really, if you feel you must cheat, see your team psychologist. If you don't have one, find one. This is possibly the single most important thing you can do in terms of getting a handle on long term success NOW. -
Cheating on day 6 post op
Freckles70 replied to DebraM04's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I found myself feeling "hungry" during my first two weeks post op too. Looking back I'm fairly certain that was due to two main reasons: 1) gas bubbles gurgling through my system mimicked the rumbling of an empty tummy and 2) lack of food diversity. My plan did allow cream of wheat (very thin and supplemented with protein powder), yogurt and pudding during the full liquids phase. It helped to alternate protein shakes with something like Greek yogurt that has more substance. Are you meeting your protein goals everyday? When you feel hungry you should be reaching for a ready made shake or a cup of broth or even a v-8 if you need some diversity in your diet. Please reach out to your NUT or program for help. -

Help understanding stage 2 " full liquids"
XYZXYZXYZ1955 replied to lucylu1313's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You should have a specific list from your surgeon and/or your nutritionist. However, stage one is clear liquids only, while stage two generally includes protein shakes, sugar-free jello and popsicles and fudgesicles, and cream soup (without any pieces or chunks of food--blend it if you have to). Sugar-free yogurt might be allowed; check your list. -

Nexium, Hunger and my 2 cents
filodough replied to Keys Pirate's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Wow. I had not even thought about it until Oregon Daisy pointed it out. I don't have a prescription for Nexium, but have some Prilosec and Prevacid at home. Will start on that today. I had some greek yogurt an hour ago, and I am already 'hungry'/acid hungry' -
When did you start a soft diet? Post-op?
RickM replied to Quickly's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Mine started in the hospital with things like scrambled eggs and yogurt. As to what can be tolerated is a very individual thing, beyond whatever the surgeon wants you to try and when. I had no problems with anything that I tried and progressed fairly quickly, trying new things a little at a time, getting progressively thicker, chunkier and less soft. Others have a problem progressing very rapidly and that's OK - there's a wide variation between what we as individuals can tolerate and when. When my wife went through this a few years ago, she had more problems with various food tolerances, and that's just the way she is - the doc had no worries about either of us, but just somewhat different responses within normal experience. -
6 weeks out and everything I eat gives me ouchie pouch
Djmohr replied to Homecie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Beni, I have that same experience with egg and I am 12 weeks out. For some reason I eat egg and I just get instantly sick to my stomach. Occasionally I try to sneak it in with other stuff in small amounts but I think it is just too heavy. The weird thing is my pouch loves chicken and fish. Sometimes ground beef but sometimes I have trouble with it and it can ruin my day. Food can be frustrating. I also get board eating the same things. Lately I eat a lot of cheese, fish, chicken, yogurt, oatmeal and protein shakes. And I can eat almost all vegies. It has gotten a lot better as the weeks have gone by, you just have to take your time and if a food doesn't work try again a week or two later. -
6 weeks out and everything I eat gives me ouchie pouch
ready2B replied to Homecie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 5 weeks out now and there are times things hurt my pouch too. I am on a regular diet now, but I can't seem to tolerate meat of any kind right now, even though I could 3 weeks ago. My NUT explained that some of us don't have the stomach enzymes that we need to break certain foods down like meats at first, and it takes some people longer than others to be able to eat them again. Be patient. In the meantime, I can eat cheese, yogurt, edamame, and a bunch of other things just fine and can get in my Protein with non-meat things. I do find if I eat or ever drink a sip of Water too fast, my ouch will cramp up and it HURTS!! It will take up to a couple of hours sometimes to quit cramping. I just wait it out, maybe sip some warm camomile tea, and then it all seems okay again. -
Starving and angry!!
lose2regainme replied to NinaC's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You really shouldn't be THAT hungry if you are getting in your protein and your fluids. There is no limit, as long as you are eating and drinking approved things, keep eating and drinking if you are still hungry. Starting the mushies too soon will affect your healing. I made sugar free Jello using a liquid Protein Drink as the "cold" water part, and ate two or three servings a day. Sugar free popsicles are awesome, especially if you miss sweets and chewing. Crystal light or Propel water to add some flavor to water, without sugar and calories. Add nectar Medical unflavored Protein powder to your chicken broth. Get 50-55 grams of protein in a day, your Vitamins and lots of fluids. Be creative with your options, and take it easy. Now is the time for healing, not really losing. The liquids part will be over soon, and scrambled eggs, yogurt and cottage cheese will never taste so good!!! YOU CAN DO THIS!!!! My surgery was June 19. I just got through this, and you can, too!!! -
Nights pre op were my worst. I would get raw veggies and Greek yogurt mixed with ranch dressing dry mix and survived. I did cheat a few times
