Pain at the opening of stomach
NeverAgain297 replied to Lilypop's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am going through the same thing. Wish I had some answers for you. After 2 bites, I get a pain that feels almost like the food is tearing into my stomach as it goes down. It makes me not want to eat at all. Sometimes it even does it with liquid! Btw my bypass surgery was 10/28/20 -
What to do while I wait for approval
Grace55 replied to davis29's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If you met all the criteria & your Surgeon’s office completed all requested paperwork, they should be able to answer this so you are not in “ limbo.” You can also contact your insurance carrier and inquire about your status. I doubt you would not be accepted, most insurance, not all, is paying for bariatric surgery. If you have not already done this to prepare for your new life, an excellent resource for now & in the future: “Obesity Action Coalition.” You May already know about this organization, the website: www.obesityaction.com When you access this site there is a lot of information preparing for Bariatric surgery, the resources offered are excellent for everyday, but also an excellent support system. They list 10 ways to prepare, I won’t list them all as it’s probably easier for you to read it on the website: 1. Start to Think about why you eat, 2. Keep a list of non- food ways to cope w/stress, 3. Don’t compare yourself with others, 4. Follow up, Follow up, Follow up, 5. Prepare to feel a little left out at dining & social gatherings. I referenced 5 items from the 10 Ways to Prepare for Bariatric Surgery. With each item is an explanation how to manage each one. You are not alone, there are many resources and groups on line & in your community. The OAC Community is an excellent, one of the best resources. You are in NC? I am from NC, excellent health care, exemplary hospitals in NC, whether it is Duke in Raleigh or Winston Salem - Wake Forest/Bowman Gray Center, UNC, Vidant Medical Center... You are in good hands with exceptional hospitals. Good luck, you will do great! -
Week 3 soft foods and weight gain
JoanneLaRusch replied to Avii's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I literally just got on the site because I was going to ask this same thing. But first I was like let me scroll some posts I may find an answer. I had my sleeve on 10/29/2020. I just started regular foods. I haven't over ate, haven't had any sugar, I've been trying to keep my sugar at like 1 gram if any. And the little tiny bit I just started eating I make sure its healthy. My weigh days are Tuesdays, I cheated and weighed Friday too. Was down to 301. I weighed today after my bath, and am at 303. [emoji15][emoji15][emoji15]. I'm hoping it's what was stated above. Water retention or something. It got me feeling a little down I won't lie tho. I had my surgery yesterday at Blossom. The whole experience was awesome I must say and I feel really good today. You have 10 days before your surgery. I hope that your cold clears up. They are constantly checking temperatures and making you use hand sanitizer and like. We fly home to Atlanta tomorrow. The biggest threat to travel, I think, are all the maskless people grabbing a bite to eat in the airport.

Having my sleeve surgery tomorrow!
PollyAnna3483 replied to PJKS1989's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Congratulations! I had a bypass on November 5th. I was worried about pain and what recovery would be like. I spent two nights in the hospital and had plenty of pain meds while there. I also took pain meds when I got home but not nearly as many. Get up and walk more than they tell you to. It can be exhausting at first but it really does help with gas pains you may have. Follow your surgeons advice, ask lots of questions if things are not clear. I am 10 days out and get tired but my husband and I hung new blinds a few days ago so I figure I am not doing too bad at this point. Good luck tomorrow! -
Feeling frustrated and sad
catwoman7 replied to Horseshowmom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
a lot of people gain weight from the IV fluids they get in the hospital. I've read posts of people gaining 10 or more lbs from it, to be honest. It does take a few days - or even a week - for it to work it's way out of your system. If you're following your clinic's food plan, the weight WILL start to drop off. -
3 months out anger and mad at the world
Hollow star posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Not sure if it’s the surgery , time of year with holidays or COVID-19 . I’m angry and just a stewing pot ready to boil over. I am passive aggressive with my husband, and short with the kids. I’m overwhelmed by the anger, I spent hours away from home with the kids last night because I didn’t want to see my husband. The kids had a great time, and I was relaxed. MAybe the break from the daily Routine was what I needed. I haven’t been sleeping well, And I work full time, we are short staffed, the weather has been cold so I’m not out walking as much as I should. he is a stay at home dad and doesn’t socialize with people beside me and a few others. I try guideline him to places where he could engage with others. I try to encourage him, and he seems happy being at home. I enjoy having him at home to help with the kids , picking them up and so forth.... what is wrong with me..... I don’t know. TIA -
Beginning BMI 35 or under
ItsJustMeToo replied to 1GardenGirl's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I hovered right around 35 BMI. Friends and family insisted that I was "too small" for surgery. I considered it off and on for about 10 years, and finally decided to do it (sleeve), and just not tell anyone so I didn't need to deal with the judgement. Only regret I have is not doing it sooner. My weight loss was slow going at first. At the two year mark I'd lost about 50 pounds and while I was super happy at that weight, I had expected to lose a bit more. Year 3 I've lost another 20 pounds and am actually "working" to stay at this weight. I could easily lose more if I wanted to be slimmer. No insurance coverage. Paid for everything out of pocket. -
15 in the first month. 10 the second month and many months after that. I didn't lose tons of weight in any one month, but it just kept going and going... Be patient, the pounds lost will add up quickly!

Nov. 5 sleeve surgery: Have had great success so far, but 2 issues. Began pre-op diet 2 weeks before of protein shakes 2-3 and one hi protein meal. Final day before surgery, only shakes. 2 days after surgery was clear liquids only. Protein shakes (2-3 daily), broths and water since then. Since 10/22 pre op kick off I have lost 31.5 lbs. Gout flared up in my ankle on Wednesday, just as tramadol came to an end. Late last night had a good round of dry heaves. I think from air in shakes from blender, so I will stick with premade ones. How are others progressing? Doc appointment on 11/20 to go on soft food two week transition. How are you folks progressing?

Considering surgery, BMI 34, age 48 F
MeTooToo posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello! Im in the “considering” phase for WLS. Not sure if I am a good candidate or if I am giving up on my own sheer determination too soon. I have a child who is about a year out of sleeve surgery at age 22 and doing great. It’s inspiring, and I long for similar success. I have battled my weight my whole life. A little background: According to height and weight charts, I have never ever been within healthy range. At age 14, I weighed 181. As an active teen I averaged 165, and I have not seen that weight since. As an adult, I usually hovered between 195-270 and everything in between as I had children and went through the decades of my life. (Highest weight was 270 from 1999-2003) In the last 10 years, I have felt pretty good and seemed to settle into the 185-210 range, always fluctuating. I am 5’9” so I carry my weight well. This last two years I have gained 37 lbs pushing me from 193 to 230. (20 if it is definitely covid stress related) I had gestational diabetes with all three pregnancies, requiring insulin. My father was a diabetic and had every complication of it (stroke, blindness, foot infections) including kidney failure which ultimately contributed to his death. Other than genetics, my current health issues are heart palpitations, knee pain, back pain. My BMI is currently 34.5. Even if I struggle to lose 30 lbs, at 199 I will still be around 29 BMI. Even maintaining “overweight” status is a constant uphill battle for me and has gotten worse in my 40’s. I am tired of this being so difficult. I live in fear of inheriting my fathers health problems. Sorry so long. Wondering if I’m giving up my willpower too soon. The constant flip flopping from “I can do this on my own” and “it’s time to take this to another level before it’s too late” is giving me terrible anxiety. Any thoughts, experience, or advice is welcome. -

I am so happy today! 50 pounds gone! It has taken 3.5 months, which is longer than I thought it would take, but it's 50 pounds gone which is more than I've ever lost before regaining! I lost 25 pounds the first month and have been averaging 10 pounds for the last 2.5. I had to resign myself to NOT getting to goal by the holidays, but I have felt amazing, never deprived and my skin and hair look great! Slow and steady wins the race! I hope everyone has a great weekend!

Got my official preop paperwork today. I have a lot of homework. I’m going to have to take a day off to get this all done. New ECG, CXR, labs, weigh in, preop at hospital. Then another weigh in 2-3 days before surgery. All while on a liquid diet. He only asked me to lose 5-10 pounds. I already feel like I’m going to lose 20 on this diet.....feeling a little dramatic tonight.

Hi there - had my sleeve December 2, 2019 - I’m now 5lbs away from goal weight! One thing I noticed early on is that I’m ALWAYS cold. I know losing the fat no longer insulates you, but I’m always freezing! I take enough iron, so I can’t say that’s it. Anyone else experience being cold all the time?

Corona delaying weight loss surgery dates? Anyone?
JKSharPei replied to MaybeMeow's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Update. Surgery was on 11/03/2020 (Election Day)! Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy + hiatal hernia repair. I spent two nights in the hospital. As expected, the pain was mostly tolerable; gas pressure was the worst part. The only IV narcotic I needed was in the PACU immediately after surgery; one oral dose of Dilaudid, IV Toradol and Gas X was all I needed for pain control. Cold liquids caused painful spasms, so I opted for warm-to-room temperature fluids. I’m 10 days post-op and tolerating a soft diet (scrambled eggs, finely diced chicken/tuna/egg salad) well. After my last post, I decided not worry about whether my insurance would deny surgery if I lost too much weight before surgery. I eliminated nearly all carbs and exercised like a mad woman. By day of surgery, I’d dropped my BMI to 28. My surgeon said this was the lowest BMI he’d ever performed VSG; even though I’d lost close to 50 lbs with diet and exercise, my chance of increasing then maintaining that weight loss was only about 5%. Given my own and family medical histories, we both agreed to proceed with surgery. And my insurance covered it! -
13 years later and - I Love my band

This sounds like me. I'm a longhauler, too, 10 cc with 5.0 cc fill. I can eat pretty much everything, just smaller bites and much slower. No one likes to go to lunch with me because I take so long to finish my food! But still....love that my weight is stable and I had a tummy tuck last year to complete the transformation. Both procedures totally worth it...it is quite freeing to live in a body that I'm not ashamed of. -
Was sleeved on 11/10, and got to come home yesterday (11/12). I’m feeling great and working on getting in my liquids and protein, but I’m hurting in one incision. The largest incision that my doctor told me he pulled the excess stomach from is giving me a fit. I can’t even bend over to pull on a pair of leggings or socks. It gives me a sharp, shooting, burning pain all through that area. I know he had to cut muscle to get the excess out, but how long will it hurt like that? Like, it’s about to be cold here in TN y’all. 🤪 Also, gas pain. I’ve been walking and walking, but I still feel like I have gas trapped in my upper chest and I can’t burp! Like, I’ve even tried to gulp air to make myself burp and it isn’t working. No problems with the other end, but any advice with upper chest gas pockets?

I use workout videos on YouTube. You can do them at home for free. Someone here recommended Leslie Sansone Walk at Home, and she has a lot of free videos on YouTube. I think they're great for beginners because they're pretty simple, most don't require any equipment, and you can start with short ones (10-15 minutes) and work your way up to longer ones.

Sphincter of Oddi Dysfunction
G8trgrl replied to chasingpolaris321's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I was diagnosed 4 years ago with SOD. I had an ERCP where a sphincterotomy was done. That cleared my pain for 3 years. Then, my pain started up again. But, it came and went. I had actually forgotten I had SOD. I had my gastric sleeve done in June, then had my annual physical in July. My blood work came back with elevated liver enzymes. That’s when I finally realized my SOD had come back. I’m scheduled for another ERCP in about 10 days. It seems that the pain is getting worse as time goes by. It’s definitely worse since my gastric sleeve surgery. -
On my surgery date I weighed 196. Today I weighed 190.5. Anyone else get off to such a slow start????

Revision due to GERD
Christina760 replied to Nurse Crystal's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hello! I was sleeved in 2012 and lost 105! My acid reflux started getting worse. Especially at night too woke up w sore throat from the acid and tried diff medications. I got the bypass for acid reflux AND weight loss. More the acid I just want it gone. I’m 1.5 weeks post op. Had my bypass 11/2. I’ve lost 10 pounds so far in the week I’ve been home lol I’m feeling great. I will say the pain for this revision was horrible. My friend had bypass and didn’t have this much pain. Today I’m able to get around a lot and even house clean. I’m on protonix for 3 months but I was thinking I would not need it hmmm not sure but I do feel acid if I have Gatorade zero. Hopefullly it’s just because it’s so soon after surgery. But you will lose. Well I think so, I am. SW230, 2 week 1,000 cal diet low carb=216, after surgery 216. 10 days later I’m at 206. Goal 170. good luck! -
My wife and I were sleeved today. My pain has been fairly manageable. My wife is in a bit more pain. We lost 18 and 19 lbs on the 2 week preop diet. Happy healing to the rest of the sleeves for this month. The biotene dry mouth spray is amazing after surgery.
