    June 2014 Dates!?

Your pre op diet sounds way better than mine!! Lol. I guess we are both having it the same day, because I'm the 19th of June as well. I'm nervous because I've gained about ten pounds since my last appointment. Not because of food though, I wish! My surgeon insists on chewable, crushable or liquid medications for the first two months post-op, and I had to change antidepressants because Wellbutrin XL can't be crushed. My pharmacist and therapist decided liquid Prozac was the way to go and started me on last month, to ensure I can tolerate it ok prior to surgery. I'm hoping the Opti-fast liquid diet helps me shed the extra pounds. I'd hate to have my surgery postponed because a medication caused more weight gain instead of loss during my waiting period for surgery.

I will be praying for you! I understand the BP issue. I have been on BP meds since 1999 after I started having children. I am hoping to be removed from them too. It is a roller last when they change the meds at least it makes me tired. I too am thinking mine is too strong and will have to wait to see him to make the change or send me to the Dr. I hope you get off all the meds and as they remove you, your body transitions smoothly. Thanks for your kind words!!! I can definitely relate to you because I began having issues with hbp after I had my oldest daughter. After being on the meds to control it for so long we must be carefully weaned off of it because our doctors must see our pressure consistently low over a period of time. When I was healthy I only needed a low dose of meds to control it but over the years as weight gain and stress became an issue I needed more meds at higher doses just to keep it at 130/80. I know I will have to see both my PCP and cardiologist so they can work in tandem and make the right decision for me. I pray that we all will reap the benefits of our decisions to have WLS and live healthier lives. I'm praying for you too, God bless.

    Help..

First off, WOW!!! 30 pounds is so awesome!!! As far as your weight gain... Your body is in starvation mode. Your switch in higher calorie foods has caused your body to hold on to every calorie BECAUSE it's in starvation mode. Your body is adjusting. If you're following your doctors orders, your are doing nothing wrong. It is normal to see fluctuations from time to time, including stalls. You're fine. Keep doing what you're doing. dde09

More than 200 lbs to lose?

I too have a long road ahead of me. At my current weight of 330lbs, I am hoping to be back to 160lbs. It has been 17 yrs since I've seen that number on my scale. I have always struggled with weight gain, after having my son 14 yrs ago I have tried diet after diet. I run daily 3-5 miles, working with a body coach, count every calorie I take in....and to my surprise, gain weight. I have been tossing WLS back and forth for a few months now and I have finally made an appt with my surgeon, meeting him on May 27 with my 1st WL seminar that same night. I don't have many requirements with my insurance company before I can submit for approval. So I'm hoping for a smooth road and hopefully, fingers crossed, I can have my surgery scheduled sometime in August! I am ready to conquer the road ahead, and take back control of my body. It's a great feeling to know I will be able to run in marathons with my son in the near future!! Bobby Jo
  5. Sorry to hear of your separation….life happens even as we try to lose weight. I had a death in the family (my FIL) and the stress of everything plus all the food coming in really sent me in a tailspin and eating all the wrong things and lots of them. Every day for several weeks I kept telling myself today was the day I would be better…and it wasn't…and it took those few weeks for me to realize that I did NOT want to go back to where I was before with weight gain or with letting food control me. And when I realized that, it just came together for me. And now I am back on it and feeling good about myself. Unfortunately when emotions are involved it is a very personal experience and the only one who can make that decision to get back on track is YOU! And that stinks….support is nice but that didn't stop me from eating ice cream and lots of other crap. I made a side by side picture of myself at my heaviest and now and hung it in my bathroom and on my frig. That helps at times….. Wishing you peace and lots of luck with it all….

    I need encouragement!

Thanks for keeping it real. I've been doing so well since surgery, but the past few days have had trouble getting my butt on the treadmill. That's how it starts. I commend you for asking for encouragement, so here it is. I decided months ago that since nothing changes if nothing changes, I wasn't going to go into this life change with the same behaviors I did in the past. Namely, let how I feel rule what I do. "I don't want to exercise" isn't a conscious decision not to exercise. It's a fleeting feeling of today. I choose to make the conscious decision to override that feeling. Every single stinking time I do this, and choose the thought-through, smart decision over the fleeting feeling, I'm making progress and working those habit muscles. Eating, exercise, social interaction, you name it. I am NOT a slave to my feelings. Where the head goes, the body will follow. Fake it til you make it. Do it anyway. Pick a slogan. Any of them that work! Thank you for reminding me that I was slipping into "feelings rule" mode this week, and that's a dangerous, slippery slope for me. Matter of fact, that slope is about a 150-lb weight gain slope. Been there, done that, bought the size 4XL t-shirt. Good luck and stay connected!

    Starting weaning off

You are quite right. After surgery, you shouldn't have carbonated beverages. Although I haven't seen any studies on this, I suspect the carbonated bubbles create microscopic explosions in the stomach that stretches the pouch. As your stomach gets microscopically larger, it allows you to eat more. Over time using carbonated beverages produces a larger stomach and weight gain. Also it accounts for why when I went cold turkey with diet cokes, my stomach got slightly smaller and I lost weight.

    Can You Really Start Over?

So, I didnt mention that during the year of unfill, and maybe a good reason I was unfille was due to some health issues I was having at the time also. I was having sever pantic attacks, anxiety and depression. I had terrible stomach pain, body aches, joints hurts, not to mention continues weight gain. Went to four diffrent doctors trying to find out what was wrong, Gino, Psychiatrist, Grastro and GP. After being put on a long list of pills for all of the symtoms I just fell so bad, it was all I could do to get out of bed. I felt I was loosing my everloving mind. Blood work was done and "NOTHING" was found out of the normal ranges. I had the flu twice, two diffrent strans, pnemonia, was hospitalized for what they thought was cdiff. Had an upper and lower GI. Bowls were enlarged from the antibotics. Finally my GP noticed that my pulse was alway slightly elevated. He did some diffrent test on my blood work and it came back that I had hoshimoto thyroid. I had scans and more test, and was sent to an Endocrinoigist. Long story short, had surgery to remove my thyriod in Feb, they found cancer. I am lucky, they did remove all, along with my thyroid. So here I now sit, with my band empty, almost backt o the weight I was 7 years ago when I got it. I guess I am wanting to know..... Can I start this over, get my band refilled, fight the thyroid hormone replacement war and maybe loose weight? Thanks for letting me rant Laura

    Starting weaning off

I have been drinking Cokes for the past 50 years or so. During the initial trials on "flip-top cans", I was one of the subjects interviewed. That is how long I have been drinking them. Around 10 years ago, I transitioned to Diet Cokes because I was gaining too much weight. That transition didn't stop my weight gain. When I applied for Bariatric Surgery, I was told that I had to give up caffeine and carbonated beverages. Generally I had a 6 cokes a day habit. So I went cold turkey. I didn't realize how addictive cokes were. My body experienced major withdrawal symptoms. My whole body ached for two weeks, every joint in my body seemed to ache. But then after two weeks, the pain went away. I have not had a carbonated beverage for the past year and a half. By the way, when I gave up Cokes, I lost 20 pounds of weight just based on that change alone.

Losing weight at an older age

Hey there youngster.... I take beta blockers and statin medication for atherosclerosis which have side effects of weight gain. However, I follow the guidelines and hit the gym several times a week and I haven't seen my age or the meds slow my loss. And while I have begun to enjoy the benefits of that ole saying about, "you're only as old as you feel". ...I must say though, it's quite unsettling to look in the mirror and realize I haven't actually reverted to 25. You'll do fine.

April 16th role call - who's with me!

Hey ladies, I'm on liquids for weeks 3 & 4 so I can't help there. A couple of answers to other questions that have come up in our forum or whatever we call this.... 1. I got my period 2 weeks early. Never happens because I'm on the pill. Thankfully the cramps haven't been bad but I'm definitely heavier than normal. I think the specific question was if we gained or were bloated....I feel a little bloated, but since I'm on all liquids, I think all the extra fluids I'm drinking has actually helped with bloating. No weight gain as of day one. I guess we talked it up and that's why I started early.... 2. I got some advice from you all about the nausea. I tried using crystal lite instead of plain Water and that seems to be helping. I also called my dr because 3-4 hours of feeling like I was going to vomit was way too much for me. He prescribed zofran. Haven't had the nausea since I picked it up so I'll let you know how it works. But he let me add applesauce to crush up one of my Vitamins in that was really making me nauseous and it wasn't as bad taking it today. I just took really small bites of the Vitamin then a small bite of applesauce to help get it down. He said the calcium citrate was sitting like a rock in my stomach so maybe the liquids wasn't enough to take it with. The unsweetened applesauce was soooooo delicious compared to everything else I've had!!! Made me happy! Ok sorry for the long post but several things have happened that I couldn't answer until now. Bluesea - how are you eating the hummus? By itself? Dipping something in it? I can't wait till I can have it. Just wondering what you were eating it with....
  13. I also have the band as on May 7th I will be having a revision to the bypass. I don't weigh much more than you. I found out I have Barrett's esophagus and I cannot do the sleeve. I was told in most cases the bypass cures acid reflux. Anyhow, I've wrapped my head around it. Side note, this is my 3rd wls surgery. I had an a Molina band that didn't adjust ( first band used) It tightened up on me and I couldn't keep food down. I went from 310 to 119, size 2. I had it revised to the adjustable band on 2007. I had foot surgery and gained about 30ish lbs. this year. I had no real issues with band but I went to talk to wls surgeon anyways and found out my esophagus was turning into a stomach and that contributed to the weight gain and then found out with scope biopsy I have Barrett's, precancerous cells. The band has to come out I know I need a tool so if bypass is what I have to do so be it. I would love to keep on touch with both of y'all. I don't understand this site fully, but if u know how add me. . Wednesday at 7, go time

    Tips for success?

I have a major sugar problem. Cold turkey is the only way. I read once that if you are craving carbs/sugar then you are eating to much. For me this is soooo true. I have had two stalls followed by weight gain since I had surgery. Both times were when I went on vacation and had sugar when I got home I couldn't stop. It takes we a week of trying before I can get a grip on the situation. I think the most important thing is to acknowledge when the sugar monster has you and don't let it go on, kick the problem ASAP. As soon as I stop the sugar/carb intake I start losing again but I can't help but think of the 3-4 weeks I wasted.

    Friday Weigh-In!

I am approaching the 1 year mark after surgery and I am in the maintenance stage. I don't obsess with my weight. I have an accurate scale, good for increments of 0.2 pounds. I weigh myself each morning when I get up and record my weight. I reached my bottom weight 7 months after RNY gastric bypass surgery. My weight generally falls within the 160.0 to 162.0 range. There were several times when my weight was below this figure and a few times above. Generally I look at the scale as an instantaneous feedback tool. I do a lot of experimentation. If I see a weight gain outside the range, I return to my basic meal plan and the weight falls back in line. So far some of the items that I have to stay away from by using this method are: bread, sweet corn, sweet cherries. On the other side, some of the things that appear to drive my weight below the limit is when I pick up a cold or when I eat out at restaurants.

    weight loss pre op

My doc did not have a set number, but the psychologist wouldn't clear me for surgery until I broke my tv snacking habit. I lost a month there. Everyone's loss is different, and there are a lot of different pre-op diets. You'll lose if you adhere to yours, but you'll probably slightly gain right after surgery from swelling and healing of tissues. It can take 3-4 weeks for your body to drop the surgical weight gain, but it will come off if you stay on plan. I've had a good weight loss, but I've been very compliant. The scale bounced up and down, but now I'm steadily losing. Good luck!
  18. Linda, Hello... I was browsing around and was so glad to see this post. I am not sure if I mentioned this before (when we have talked) I am a diabetic on insulin. In November 2012, I had been rushed to the hospital for DKA and was in diabetic shock... I was literally out of it for 3 days *which i am still unable to recall*. Doctors told my husband at that time that my sugars were so high they were literally off the charts and I was lucky to be alive. When the #s finally started to register it was 815. Long story short, I truly thank God I am here. Anyway, the reason I told that is to lead to the following. With that episode happening, my previous endocrinologist thought perhaps I was type 1 diabetic, (instead of type 2,as previously diagnosed in 2003) they ran the specific tests and I was told that I was not type 1, but definitely type 2. Time went on and I am no longer seeing that doctor and now have a new endocrinologist.... and well seeing my history on record and blood sugar issues, he also wanted to test me to see if I was type 1. Longer story short, at my last visit I was told that the blood tests confirm that I am type 2 but I also have traits of type 1 diabetes... which makes my case of diabetes different.... He further told me to inform Dr. Uchal that more than likely i have impairment going on with my pancreas (which of course is nothing new as diabetes effects the pancreas) but he then told me that with my upcoming bariatric surgery, not to expect to be off of my insulin completely... (which didn't shock me, as I know how the slightest intake can make my sugar go up). I say that full, long story for this reason... in finding out the recent info, I started to worry about the "what if's" again... thinking what if this surgery will not work because I am remaining on insulin (as insulin can cause weight gain). It truly started to upset me so much to where it prompted me to search for info on this site... (that is how I found the above post and your reply) May I ask, "has the insulin hindered any of your husband's progress/weight loss?" I am trying not to worry but I want to be prepared. I told my husband my fear would be that I do the surgery and that the insulin sabotaging my results, especially since I have a lot of weight to lose.... (my apologies for the lengthy story...lol... but any reply would be helpful..) Sincerely, Angi Angi, Sounds like you have type 1.5. Certainly sounds like it. (You can google it! )

    Why lord!

Your weight is going to fluctuate. If you were to chart your weight over time, were your expectations to have that be a straight line sloping down? I hope not, because that is just not the way this works. Also, since you are using a scale, know that it only measures weight, not fat. What are you looking to lose weight or fat? Remember, it is generally accepted if you consume 3,500 more calories than you burn, you will gain a pound. Burn 3,500 calories more than you consume, you lose a pound. So, assuming your resting metabolic rate is 2,000 calories a day, let's do the math: 7 days in a week 2,000 calorie BMR 3,500 calories for 1 pound 7 (Days) x 2,000 (BMR) = 14,000 calories burned in a week sitting on your couch doing nothing 3,500 (calories in a pound) x 1.8 (amount of weight gained) = 6,300 calories (14,000 + 6,300) (number of calories to gain 1.8 pounds) / 7 (days in a week) = 2,900 calories per day. So then, if you think you have been consuming 2,900 calories a day, then you might have something to worry about as you are putting on fat. But if you are consuming less than that, then it is most likely Water weight. How's the hormones been lately?

    Longest "stall" so far.

Hey @Ava324 - thats a really good plan... i think i would be ok with 150 over all... but i am shooting for 140. (esp if there is some weight gain later down the road) The doc had said he thought that surgery was a factor for the DVT, but i went on a business trip about 6 weeks out & he and another doc said "oh it was due to air plane ride"... well 5 weeks later the blood work came back & I tested positive for some clotting gene, i will see a blood dr in a week or so... i am not worried or upset about it... it is what it is. I cant change it nor could i have prevented it... honestly, had i not had the surgery, i might have not found out that i had the blood clot untill it was too late.... i would have continued to think i over extened my knee... so i look at it the Sleeved saved my life - more then just dropping the weight... I am gonna have to find something that works for me as far as fluids go... i know what i am currently doing is not enough - i drink for sure TWO 16.9 oz of Water a day... then about 4 oz of Protein shake - that is the bare bones... some days i might drink another 16.9 of water with another 4 oz of protein shake, but that is not my average... (not lately anyway) Well its MAY 2 - and i am going to get this train back on track! Keep in touch!!! would to hear about your progress & any tips you might have!

    April 2014 pre-op group

My surgeon just talked to me about this. He said it had to do with dehydration, losing a lot of water weight and getting hydrated again. He told me to expect a stall and possible weight gain.

    I'm Ready

Hey! I am guessing from your use name you may be in Idaho? So am I! The 6 month thing is what many insurance companies require. They want you to follow a medically supervised diet for 6 months. Mine is 3 months. I didn't know what to expect for that and was devastated when I went in for my month 1 appointment and had not lost any weight. It sounds like different insurances are looking for different things. I think some want zero weight gain and others want a few pounds lost....I think they basically want to make sure that you can follow doctors orders. My doctor explained to me that yes they would love to see weight loss during the diet because it makes you healthier for surgery, but as long as I didn't a lot of weight, I would be fine. My doc has been more focused on using the diet and time to really prepare me for surgery.....getting a support system in place, learning about food choices, exercising EVERY day for 30 minutes, even if it is a light walk. It seems like such a long time at first but it goes by very quickly :-)

    Does it really matter!

I'm there with you Teachamy -- I'm right around the 210 mark at 36 BMI. I just don't want to hear that "but you're not that big" comment so I'm not telling a lot of people before surgery. It's my decision to stop this weight gain cycle and improve my health before it gets so bad it makes the surgery more risky. I do have to admit, when I told my 20 yo son I was having the surgery, he did say "You're not as big as you think you are..." and it made me smile. He loves me a lot and thinks I'm too hard on myself. Of course, it doesn't sway my decision because he's my kid and doesn't get a vote, but, it still felt nice that he could express he cares.
  24. jujubslim

    Question...?

It doesn't irritate me, I just feel bad for them. I think the maintenance stage will be difficult when the restriction is less and you haven't changed your eating habits. I wish everyone success but there's a reason statistics show a lot of people experience weight gain after maintenance.
  25. I had my thyroid removed 10 years ago due to cancer. For 10 years, I searched for every reason to blame my lack of thyroid on my weight gain, fatigue, fibromyalgia, etc. All I got for that was heavier and more depressed. In Dec 2013, I went for VSG, also very concerned that I may not be as successful as "normal-thyroid people. Today, only 5 months later, I am down 70 pounds, have unbelievable energy, feel wonderful, and I have a totally new outlook on life. I am back to believing in my own body's ability to get healthy (this was a tough one after the cancer diagnosis), because my body is responding to my efforts. I still have a ways to go, but I KNOW my body will do this for me as long as I do what I'm supposed to do. Bottom line - I sure know that feeling of what-if-I-cant do this because of my thyroid issues - my experience is GO FOR IT! The thyroid issues are another reason to GO FOR IT, not to fear it. Good luck!
