30 min no fluids before and after food at stage 2 soft food?
lilac lass posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
HI, I was sleeved 12-6. My doctor said I could go to stage two, soft food on Christmas. But here is my confusion, when I first started meeting with the NUT in July, she went over the nutrition program. I did well on it and was good at not eating 30 minutes before and after meals. After surgery, my doctor said not to focus on fluids and timing with the Protein shakes. That made sense since I wasn't really eating any food, just an occasional bit of apple sauce. The NUT from the office has resigned and they don't have new one yet so I don't have one to ask. So tomorrow when I take a few bites of soft food, do I go back to the 30 minute break before and after the food? Is it now or at the next final stage of full bariatric diet? It makes sense to have a gap without fluids now, my stomach isn't big, but I wanted to know what you did. -
I use Bariatric Advantage, which was recommended by my surgeon.

Thanks for the responses. I contacted a bariatric program. I had to participate in a free seminar and fill out some forms. Once I return the forms they will contact my inurance and we will see what i need to do from there forward. It is so exciting even taking this small step! Quick question my bmi is like 56 and is my only diagnosed if you will reason so get this surgery. Is it safe for me to loose weight before this whole process is done? I would have to loose almost 100 lbs to be under the 40 bmi cut off.

April 2011 Bandits
Jae2011bandster replied to Robin3's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi millypili congratulations on being banded. I was banded on the 22nd. I didn't experience the shoulder pain like you are but I did have discomfort with the gas in my chest making it hard to take deep breaths. The best thing that I would recommend would be a heating pad and keep walking the gas will eventually go away. The liquid diet stinks but is needed to heal. I survived this week with my Protein shakes (Bariatric advantage) crystal light, Water, hot decaf tea and jello. I'm on the pureed stage now and that's been the hardest for me. I mainly have creamy Soups along with the Protein Shakes, yogurt and water. Things will start to improve as the days go by. Good luck to you on your journey! -

Cardio is good and like the name suggests....it benefits your heart. So some cardio will always be beneficial. I also second what many posters are saying........it's better to add in weight training as well. Especially if you're one of those interested in aiding loose skin issues, physique, that kind of thing. And it (muscle) also helps to burn calories when you're resting....so many good benefits from lifting. If you're not familiar with lifting, a trainer would be very beneficial.....especially early on until you get some experience with resistance training and how to perform the different lifts. Just make sure to get a trainer that is a good fit for you and knows about your bariatric surgery history. Good luck and keep us posted!

After researching and wishing for nearly four years, I am finally going to a seminar. Yes, first actual one. Why? I don't like public. I don't feel comfortable outside my home. Yes, being overweight has turned me a bit agoraphobic. My insurance has a clause in it that specifically says NO BARIATRICS!! So that sucks but I am still going through with it. I like the sleeve better than the band for all the same reasons others have mentioned. I am going to just travel a few hours away for my surgery. Just scared of the tests leading up to it all. I don't have any other conditions (besides being too big) so I don't see a problem. I just see it as a hurdle in my way. When I lose weight, what do I want to do the most? Run. And take my kids to an amusement park and do everything with them- not sit on a bench and have them check in from time to time.

What to do with old clothes?
LibrarianBecky posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi there! I have not had my surgery yet, but have lost 40 pounds since June, with the help of my bariatric doctor. I'm finding that many of my clothes are too big. I'm using thrift stores and clearance sales to pick up some work clothes that fit, and I've had some wonderful co-workers give me some clothes in my new size. What I'm not sure about is what to do about my old clothes. I have lost weight before, but have never gotten rid of my bigger sized clothes. Now that I'm planning on having gastric bypass surgery in January, it really seems silly to keep them. I've considered selling them to a cosignment shop where I live to get some credit to purchase smaller sizes. I'm wondering what others who have gone down several sizes have done. Thanks for the input! -

Problem with too much weight loss?!
RussT replied to Brayrae's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Sorry but your story and what you wrote doesn’t add up. Number one, anorexia nervosa is a mental condition that makes the person starve themselves because they think they are too fat even when they are thin. A doctor would not diagnose you with anorexia just because you are losing too much weight because of bariatric surgery. You haven’t posted anything regarding how you still think you are obese and you starving yourself to lose weight, so you aren’t anorexic. So your “doctor” story rings shady. Number 2. Just because you posted a before and after photo doesn’t prove that’s even you in the photo. The woman in the before photo is nowhere near 400 pounds, unless she’s 7 feet tall. Number 3. Sorry again but NOBODY can lose 280 pounds and not have any loose skin. Your story has too many holes and doesn’t seem legit. -
Medicaid is definitely different from state to state. I work at a hospital in Virginia and we can only see patients from Virginia and West Virginia. West Virginia is covered in Virginia because they have such limited options for medical care in parts of their state - many of them drive 6+ hours to see us. Otherwise, no other state's Medicaid program is accepted in our state. Additionally, there have been recent changes to Medicaid programs and many states are now contracting Medicaid benefits with regular HMO companies. (Medicare is different - that's generally what we all get when we're 65 and over. That works anywhere in the country.) I do know that Medicaid even pays for Viagra, so I would be really disgusted if they didn't cover something like banding. I would do what someone advised above - call the number on your card and ask a) if bariatric surgery is covered and  which providers in your state participate. Good luck :cool2:

Hi my name is Rebecca and I'm on my way to a healthier life! So I am a 46 year old mother of 4 grown children (amazing children ) I have suffered from bipolar depression, ptsd, anxiety with panic attacks, and borderline personality for many years. As a result I have been on numerous medications that have caused me to gain significant weight, as well as having used food as my "comfort" food... That was the beginning of a life long struggle with weight. This past two years I have had a stroke and a mini stroke, my left knee has been totally replaced twice and is still very unstable so exercise is virtually impossible and my weight reached an all time high of 383lbs! In August I decided to take control and regain my life back.. Starting in September I met with the Bariatric team and have since lost 34bs 4oz and now have a surgery date for January 25th ...I must admit that as excited as I am about my new healthier lifestyle I am also very very nervous and constantly anxious about the "unknown". I have sleep apnea, high blood pressure, Fibromyalgia, and other health issues that can only be improved with the gastric bypass so I have weighed the pros and cons of it all and feel this may be my last chance of ever getting back to the "healthy Rebecca" that I need to be for myself, my husband, my children, and my precious grandson. 14Pk Of Syntrax Nectar Samples For $14 (Free Shipping)
Paula Kolarik replied to BenisaMartim4's topic in Food and Nutrition
I just placed an order at 866-333-7403 and got the 15pk for $15 and $1.99 s/h also Christine I am super excited to finally try other flavors & another brand because I've been buying Inspire brand from Bariatric Eating for over $32 and only 20 servings in a ziplock bag. So, I go thru about 3 bags a month ughhh! Pricey! I haven't tried many of the other brands except long ago I used Designer whey but that was nearly 15 years ago! Things in the Protein world have changed especially now since I've decided to have Roux En-Y next month the surgeon insists I only have whey protein isolate NOT whey protein concentrate since it doesn't absorb well!! I want to find where to talk about the supplements we need to be getting also! Have a great day everyone! -

Yes. I am definately biking, as a matter of fact, I'm road racing now and able to ride 126 miles in a day now. My average training day is 50 miles and I am now riding a road bike. In the works for future races are a race called the Lotoja for next fall (2007), which is a 200 mile/one day race from Logan, Utah to Jackson, Wyoming and I'm looking at putting together a team of post bariatric bicyclists for Race Across America (RAAM) next summer if I can get the funding. This is a 3100 mile race from Oceanside, Ca to Atlantic City, NJ in 12 days or less. The RAAM team is intended to show just what post-bariatric patients are capable of and an attempt to overcome a lot of the negative stuff in the news recently concerning the bariatric horror stories!Re: Plastic Surgery: Yes, I'll definately be having the plastic surgery to remove excess skin, It's king of a have to case, I have a very large apron from the excess belly I've lost. These things happen when you lose 30 inches of waistline!:guess Future plans: I'm going after my Nursing degree and RN and am targeting the world of Bariatric Nursing as a career path.

Headache is still with me. Hospital today
geekguy replied to kyrickchick64's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Desperate times call for desperate measures. Hit the Starbucks and hit it hard. I know caffeine can make us hungry, but it can also contract those blood vessels in your head causing the headaches. See if you can tolerate some hardcore coffee/espresso (or no doze) and see if it helps. When you're over the headaches, back off the caffeine and resume normal bariatric diet. We used to put our migraine patients on caffeine drips in the ER. Please everyone don't kill me for suggesting something outside the program, but I think this might help. -
I haven't been to the Mansfield one yet. Tonight is my first. But the Arlington one has very nice people. I'm going to try to go to a couple of meetings a month to keep me on the straight and narrow Last month, the speaker was the therapist that I had met with pre-surgery, discussing support systems and emotional eating. This month I think they're doing sample healthy foods and recipes. It's not separated by the type of surgery. Just any bariatric procedure.
-
It was nice, but a small group - 5 ladies including me, plus the nurse coordinator. She did a presentation on trending foods and whether they are really healthy (i.e. bariatric friendly) and then a general discussion with questions. 3 of us had already had surgery, 2 were preparing for surgery in the coming months. I will go again next month.

Let me just post the whole article then - I really should have cited it as the source, doh! It's not the newest - but all the different aspects of WLS really resonated with me. It works on a deeper level than restriction, and they still don;t understand it totally. It was one of the articles I used to convince my husband about the surgery - remember he was negative and judgemental? But anything in the NY Times is gospel to him, LOL. https://www.nytimes.com/2016/12/27/health/bariatric-surgery.html

What was the first food you ate when allowed soft foods?
FatPharm replied to FatPharm's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I did keto for a long time pre-op and even before I thought about bariatric surgery. My program is different, I guess, in that we don't do purees or full liquids and move onto soft foods like cottage cheese and yogurt, etc. on day 10. We are allowed chicken salad, even. She said to start with Greek yogurt, which I did.
