I am scheduled for Aug 25th and currently in day two of pre-op diet. This is my third procedure as I had a band which worked famously for me (-130lbs) until I suffered an erosion and had to have it removed. I lasted two years at a stable weight near my goal but the last year has been tough and without the tool I've gained some weight back... Thanks to all the posters on the forums as I'd been away and learned a bunch before making my sleeve decision since I've been back. Thanks and good luck to you all in your weight loss journey. I know to skinny women everywhere, this is no big deal, but to me? I'm shouting to the rooftop. Anyone that is bottom heavy like me knows the struggle. A month ago I could finally cross them but it wasn't a comfortable position since I had to force them to stay crossed. Today, I crossed them and sat comfortably for an hour! Eeekkk! Also, to all those bottom heavy girls, you know this is a big accomplishment SW 250 CW 192 Surg date 8/25/16 Regarding my stats, my weight loss is kind of slow but it's steady so that is ok by me. However, if only I could lose weight as fast as I'm losing my hair I'd be even more happy!!! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Hi all, This is my one month update. Since surgery I have lost 32 pounds, 72 pounds down altogether!! I am so amazed and motivated by my weight loss. I've had some minor stalling since I started eating food, but it seems like that's pretty normal. Still struggling to get in all of the things I need, but I'm hoping that will continue to improve the further out I get. I want to thank everyone here for making this such an easy transition for me. I LOVE that there is always someone available to answer questions and provide support. It has made such a huge difference in my life. Erin

Along with what Cindy C said --- I spent 2 years researching weight loss surgery and finally decided on the LAP BAND - I am 3 1/2 weeks post surgery and it is the BEST descion I have ever made~ Keep us posted -
I feel like I have waited a lifetime. I was given a surgery date of Monday August 1st. I think my mom is more excited about it than I am. I was stressed out and wanting a surgery date so bad I couldn't see straight. Now I am just bouncing back and forth with my emotions. I am discourgaed that the best date they could give me is 28 whole days away. (though in my heart I know time will fly by). I am nervous because as prepared as I thought I was, now that the date is real, I feel like I have failed to do something or research something or buy something in advance. I feel dread at the thought of having to have the talk with my boss. She is 5'1" and all of 98 pounds. One year older than me. We have been short handed at work for the better part of 7 years. Lots of projects going on. She is going to freak out when she finds out I am going to be off work for a week. I worry that she will talk about me to co-workers. I hadn't planned on telling anyone. Yes, I would imagine given a long enough time line- my co-workers will NOTICE. A thousand little worries that have never entered my mind in the past year- suddenly set up camp in the back of my mind. What if I am the only person in the world that Gastric Sleeve will not work for? What if I lose all my hair? What if my face looks like my skin has melted off of it? What if I lose weight but I cant control it and I lose too much too fast? What if I am tired and sick all the time? Who will mow my yard- how will I function at work? I know I want to do this. I just worry a lot more now, than I did before the insurance company approved me- and the doctor gave me a date. Anyone else felt this way?

It was probably somewhere between about 220 and 200 pounds that I felt like I'd found my groove with exercise and started to enjoy it cos.....it got easier. Even now the more I lose, the easier it gets. Funny that. Can't wait til I'm at goal, I'll be nearly flying haha. Just do what you can, and build on that time, your weight loss and your increased fitness will get you the rest of the way. Good luck!

I too hated exercise. I think that the key is finding something that you really enjoy doing. Try different exercises, classes, sports and when you find something that is "fun" you will want to continue doing it bc it's not a chore, its "FUN". Anyway, you can start walking immediately after surgery.I started walking 2 miles a day about 1 week post op and then started going back to the gym on week 4, taking it really easy and NO AB work for at least 6-8 weeks! However, you should check with your dr, to see what his rules are. Also, it doesn't all have to be at one time, just buying a pedometer and trying to reach 10,000 steps a day is an improvement. Park further from the office or store, take the stairs instead of the elevator, etc. It all adds up. Now I work out 7 days a week and it's just part of my lifestyle. It also really kicks the weight loss a couple notches. I wasn't losing anything...I was plateaud for at least a month until I started getting more fills and getting consistent with my exercise routine. I also am more active, like taking the stairs at work (6 flights that I couldn't do before). Of course the weight loss helps too, but the motivation has to come from you.

Biggest Fear? Death & Other Questions
reif78 replied to Tiffyrae's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
i was in the same boat as you with all the same concerns as well. the thing with lap banding is that it has low death risks im not sure of the numbers. It is reversible if wanted or needed. compared to gastric bypass very hard to reverse. and the weight loss is almost the same as gastric bypass but it tends to be slower so your skin has time to reform to the body as with the bypass you lose weight faster and your skin dont have time to reform to your new body. surgery is done within 2 hours. i know i went in at 930 am and was out at 1130 am. pain is not as bad as the bypass my friend had the bypass and the pain she said sucked big time. when i had my band put in this past december when i left the hospital the next day i went shopping lol. I have lost 32 pounds already and i love it. i dont regret nothing. i would do it all over again if need be. youll love it. good luck in your journey!! -
You know you're desperate when being too nauseated to eat sounds "good". Maybe someday they'll start using it for weight loss. It sounds like it could be helpful. Pati-o, I've heard that for some, it just takes time and for others they have to stop taking it because their bodies just can't tolerate it. I hope your mom starts feeling better soon 'cause it sounds like it's working well for her.

My father in law was on it but he does have type 1 diabetes though. He did loss alot of weight on it but they have changed him to something else more for his type diabetes. I am actually calling our doc to see if my hubby can get it. He has gained weight and I know that increases his chance of diabetes.

Losing Too Much Weight
It's all new replied to tlong's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I know someone who was sleeved and this became an issue for them as well. It was the psychological component of increasing calories and fear of weight gain that kept the loss going - sounds like a similar issue. My friend was also concerned about possible anorexia. We haven't spoken in a few months so I am not sure if the issue resolved - but I can say you aren't alone. I agree with the previous post, counseling is important - preferably someone with experience with bariatrics, if not then someone with eating disorder experience. This is usually not a case of simply "eat more" - as you already know that is the solution but can't get yourself to do it. -
Banded 11/12/12, In Recovery!
SueBee01 replied to SuzyMarie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Congrats to all of you. Drink a little at a time, often! Walk small amounts, as often as you can! Follow your doctor's post op diet! Drink to stay hydrated and walk to keep the gas pain down. Don't worry about weight loss for the first month as your body is healing. It will be slow, but steady if you stay on track. Everyone has a little different program and everyone loses at a different rate so don't compare yourself to others. Listen to your dr and NUT and ask a lot of questions! -

Hi Mr Sharp, welcome and good decision. Lucky you can fix yourself so early in your life. I think the skin is a combination of luck, age and genetics, so fingers crossed. Exercise will help definition but some people will need surgery despite working out. Look forward to seeing the pictures of your weight loss journey. Jane x -

Which Is Better? 3 Meals Or Many ?
RickM replied to meggspeggs's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I don't know if there is a "better" overall, but there may be a better for you at this time. If you aren't satisfied with your loss rate, or if you are stalling a lot, then try a change and see if that shocks your system into action. Initially, I needed six small meals a day but as I have progressed and could eat more different things, and more of them in a sitting in some cases, I have dropped one or two of those smaller meals to keep my daily calorie count in line. Smaller meals have classically been used to smooth out the insulin spikes during the day and to keep from getting too hungry and over-eating. Changes in intake or exertion are often used to break stalls; some find that upping their calories for a short term breaks a stall, fooling the body into thinking that it's no longer starving; trying the very low carb diet for a while, if you haven't already been doing so may do it - the shift into ketosis mode may tell your body that you're serious about this. Or try the other way around if you have been doing low carb and try adding carbs (preferrably complex carbs rather than twinkies!) - I have found that adding complex carbs in my meal (like some whole grain toast along with some meat and cheese) before a workout allows me to workout longer and with greater intensity than when I have a lower carb salad and meat. Another thing to look at is your workouts and exertion level. Simply changing a routine can often help, or varying the intensity of exertion. I found at around this three month time that my condition had improved enough that my exertion levels weren't taxing me as much as they used to - walking as fast as I could without breaking into a jog previously would get me into that 80% max heartrate zone (around 130+ at my age) that's often recommended for optimum cardiac and calorie burning effect but by the third to fourth month that same pace could barely get me to break 100 - it didn't feel all that much easier, but my body could sure tell the difference. Lots of things to try, good luck in ramping it up! -
I have BCBS of California (aka Anthem BCBS, gets confusing). If you visit the website, which for me is "Empireblue.com", click on the "enter" button and then type "weight loss surgery" in the search box, you will find BCBS's policy for WLS. It will tell you everything expected of you. Once I completed my 6 month supervised diet and the necessary tests, etc. I think it took a week or two ... but I did have to "bug" them to make sure they stayed on the case. Hope this helps. If you can't find the info on the website let me know. I have a pdf copy that I would be happy to send to you. ~Fran

Long journey to the beginning of this adventure!
~winecountrygirl~ posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi everyone, I'm Tanya. I live in Northern California with my husband and my two daughters. I'm 35 years old and I have been overweight all of my life. I weighed 320lbs on 5/13 when I had my weight check with my local Kaiser doctor and this morning it was 304lbs. I have been wanting weight loss surgery for years but I didn't realized it was a covered benefit of my insurance until April of this year. I have lost weight in the past, a couple times I lost 80lbs but it always comes back. If I lose 80lbs, I still weigh 240lbs and still have 100lbs to lose! It's so overwhelming and I seem to hit a wall at 240 and can't get under it, so I give up. I attended orientation at Kaiser Richmond's Bariatric Surgery Program on 6/14 and have been on the pre-op plan since 6/15. So far the hardest for me has been no gum, no drinking with meals and no snacking! I have been really good and haven't cheated yet and the weight is falling off. I'm also walking 60 minutes a day and today I'm also going to try a bike ride, I hope I don't pop the tires! Our local program does either the sleeve or gastric bypass, they say the lap band is becoming obsolete and don't even do it anymore. I chose the sleeve because I liked the idea of the order of digestion staying the same and liked that it is a restrictive surgery and not a malabsorbsion surgery. So far I have gotten tons of encouragement just by reading all of the posts on the forums. I'm looking forward to getting to know more of you better and sharing my journey with you every step of the way! I have an appointment with my surgeon, Albert Im, on July 14. I hope to be down to the weight he recommends at my appointment so I can get a surgery date! -
I DID IT! i AM FINALLY ON MY PATH TO WEIGHT LOSS AND IT HURTS SOOO GOOD.. NOT KIDDING ON THE PAIN PART. I HAVE TO SAY I I WAS EXTREMELY NERVOUS BOUT HAVING THIS SURGERY BUT I PRAYED AND PRAYED THE NIGHT BEFORE AND WHEN I WOKE UP IN THE MORNING OF SURGERY I FELT AT PEACE. I HAD SURGERY AT THE HOSPITAL THAT I WORK AT WHICH MADE THINGS ALOT MORE AT EASE JUST KNOWING SOME OF TRHE NURSES AND DOCTORS AT THE HOSPITAL. EVERYTHING WAS EXPLAINED TO ME VERY WELL AND MY SURGEON EVEN CAME OUT AND SHOOK MY HAND REASURRING ME HE WILL TAKE VERY GOOD CARE OF ME BEFORE I WAS WHEELED OFF TO THE OR TABLE. I WAS THEN GIVEN MY HAPPY JUICE AND WOKE UP IN THE WORST PAIN OF MY LIFE MOANING AND GROANING...THE NURSE WAS PUMPING TONS OF MORPHINE IN ME AS FAST AS BE COULD. THANK YOU....ANYWAYS EVERYONE TOOK WONDERFUL CARE OF ME ALL THE NURSES AND DOCTORS KEEPING MY PAIN UNDERCONTROL AND I WAS VERY BLESSED TO HAVE ONE CASE OF NAUSEA...THE ONLY STRUGGLES I AM HAVING IS PAIN WHILE SWALLING LIQUIDS AND TRYING TO RID OF GAS PAIN. I AM ALSO VERY SORE USING A PILLOW TO WALK AND FOR SUPPORT GETTING IN AND OUT OF BED. i KNOW THINGS WILL GET BETTTER. WHAT PAIN MEDS IS EVERYONE TAKING??? I FEEL LIKE IM NOT GETTING ENOUGH RELIEF

I recently heard a story about an old friend of the family whom supposedly had WLS (don't know the kind) and she only lost 20 lb right after then gained it back... Just wondering how often something like that happens? I am pretty much set on getting SKINNY after I am sleeved with Dr. Garcia May 15 (yay!) and feel like this is my last hope. I would be absolutely devastated if it didn't work.

First Appointment With The Surgeon . I Weigh What ??
PattyGirl66 replied to duncanrum's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Last year in January I weighed 289. In March I weighed 304. In April at my doctors office I weighed 310. I went back in October for a check up and weighed 367!!! I sat there and cried my eyes out, my PCP hugged me and said stop being hard on yourself and lets do something about it. Of course, I had blood work that following week which he discovered my thyroid was a little off. The next day I made an appointement to go to a seminar for weight loss surgery. It has really changed so many things about myself and the way I look at food. The race is deff. on!!!! -
WOW! 108 pounds... you are amazing! I can't imagine how great you must feel, comparing from before and now! I'm still a pre-bandster, so I'm not much help with advice here.. Just wanted to congratulate you on your loss so far!

Hair Loss 7 months after surgery
James Marusek replied to odanimm's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Protein needs to be spaced out throughout the day. If you take too much protein all at once, you body will not absorb it. Here is a link to an article titled "What Kind of Deficiency Causes hair Loss?" http://www.livestrong.com/article/324565-what-kind-of-deficiency-causes-hair-loss/ A calcium deficiency is mentioned as one of the causes. It might be possible that the hair loss is due to an Iron deficiency. Calcium and iron interfere with each other and it is important to separate taking the iron 2 hours apart from taking calcium. On top of calcium supplements, one is also getting some calcium from milk products. My bloodwork showed that I was iron deficient after surgery even though I was taking the recommended iron (in Flintstone multivitamins). As a result I was required to add an iron supplement to the regiment. I decided to move all my iron to the end of the day just before I went to bed to minimize the interference. Here is another article. http://www.webmd.com/skin-problems-and-treatments/hair-loss/news/20060516/hair-loss-may-be-iron-deficiency Armywife79 recommended blood work to explore the cause. I agree. -
Insurance requirements
anaxila replied to kaseemjones@gmail.com's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My weight was basically flat from the beginning of the 6-month supervised weight loss to the end. My surgeon asked me to lose 5% of my weight (for me, that was 15 pounds) to make surgery that much easier on both him and me. I didn't lose any of it until the last 2 weeks on the pre-op diet. I fought like crazy for that 15 pounds, and then they didn't even weigh me before surgery - lol. I believe some insurance companies may have specific weight loss targets for the 6-month cycle, but most do not. You should be able to call and check, but calling one's insurance company with a simple question never seems to be as easy as it ought to be. Mostly, they want you to go through the process and jump through the hoops so they can check all the boxes on their checklist. My surgeon said he'd had patients denied by their insurance for not losing enough weight ("she isn't serious about this") and others denied for losing too much ("she clearly doesn't need surgery if she can lose so much on her own"). In both cases he makes the appeal and he wins even if it means he needs to call and yell at them personally. I think getting yelled at by my surgeon would be a scary thing. He's rather fierce. Anyway, it wasn't an issue with me either way. My insurance was very fast with the approval the first time through. Hope this helps. -
that is the reason only selected few know about my surgery. It is a personal choice, and we cant live through them. My mom was always heavy, until she got into her 60's and now she is the EXPERT on weight loss, and has no problem telling you about how unhealthy and awful you look My husband and direct family made the choice to keep it private....and I am happy I did.... I do wish I could of called her and told her I was approved.......but....when she sees for herself how good I am doing maybe she will just be happy!!!! WE can ONLY HOPE:phanvan

OK. Yesterday I met Dr Timothy Shope ..and..
ocdgirl2000 replied to ocdgirl2000's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
oh!! I won't! I'm here to ask lots of questions! I think I have a bunch of stuff already done, for that "passport checklist" thingy required for the insurance co.. "hoping and praying" that the 4 month 3x a week cardiac rehab classes & weigh-ins with exercise routine, monitored by both my cardiologist & the nurses, (also was paid for by BC/BS since end of Nov.-March) included nutritional counseling, exercise physiologist, mediterranean diet (my cardiologists' fav, lol!) and aggressive meds..yikes, I'm even seeing a bariatric weight loss dr TOO, with appetite suppressants and even THOSE don't help, for heaven's sakes!! and I've continued the program at phase III level, paying "out of pocket" on my own, while being weighed monthly since April/May and still being weighed at the cardiologist's (saw him April 18th).. I just started seeing the dietician prescribed by the endocrinologist, since starting the metformin 2 months ago, so I'm due for bloodwork again which I will be doing tomorrow, since I'm seeing her on the 26th. My last visit with her, was when she told me I had a BMI of 35, so when I called the insurance co and they said the 35 BMI was accepted with the ONE complication, I figured since I had even MORE than the one, it wouldn't be an issue. The deal is, I have to pass the cardiac stress test again. BOO. no fun. then, the endoscopy, which I've never had any of those things done before. ewwww.. those things are entrances and exits, you know??LOL! just kidding! Guess I better get used to it! It's easy when it's "other people" when you are an RN, but when it's YOURSELF? omg.
