    May 2022 surgery?

I had already been doing weight loss diets under my doctor's supervision (I never really intended to get wls, I did keto and thought that would work wonders for me) so when I did everything I could and still didn't have any long term success, my doctor actually suggested surgery. I have BCBS of Illinois so I called them to find out if I have coverage for it and they said yes, so I found a doctor in my network and had my 1st appt on Feb 28th. I had to watch a 4 part video and do a quiz for each part, I had to get lots of bloodwork done, and ecg because the anesthesiologist required it, had to get a clearance letter from my neurologist (I have MS) and my primary doctor. I got those really fast because both were completely on board. I was able to get all of that done really quickly, and honestly I thought the biggest hurdle was going to be my insurance. Everyone was STUNNED that I got my approval, and they got the approval letter, in 48 hours. Nobody expected that at all.

    Not doing good

Grief counseling or group meetings definitely help. Our local hospice had free group meetings and a local church does as well. Sorry about your Mom, it’s such a difficult loss. I agree with the others, focus on what you need more than beating yourself up worrying about your weight.

Question about hair loss after sleeve

Everybody's body reacts differently ours may not be the teeth it may maybe the hair we can never know but yes I've heard that teeth do get brittle if not taken adequate supplements😕
  4. Hey y'all, I'm 6 days post op for the gastric sleeve. Ever since I came home from the hospital I have weighed 4 or 5 more pounds than my starting surgery weight. I don't understand why I have gained and not lost weight. I don't feel like I'm doing anything wrong. Although, I do struggle getting my water and protein in. Other than that I feel pretty good. What is everyone else's experience? Is this normal or not?

I'm sorry for the loss of you mother, Gigi. Weight-wise you've done GREAT! Be kind to yourself right now and don't focus on your weight. Try to follow the diet program as much as your grief will allow.

    Post Op Stomach Injections

Good plan on not weighing yourself - and I'm the same. The unpredictability of the scales is too high, in my opinion. You might have a stall in your numbers over two weeks, but you could go down half a dress size over the same time period. Our bodies and physiology is complex and there are so many contributing factors to the numbers that flash up on the screen. For that reason, I only measure my weight loss by how my clothes fit and feel. It's been great chatting to you tonight! I hope your follow up appointment goes well tomorrow. Mine is 7 weeks away! 😮 Not sure if I should be worried or reassured by that! Ha! xxx
  7. I had the ESG with Dr. McGowan in Cary, NC Oct 14, 2021. VERY happy with him, all his staff and everyone at the Wake Med hospital. FIRST CLASS all the way! That being said. Day of surgery my weight was 253. This coming week is my 6 month anniv and I have lost down to 227. Yes it is great! but I was so hoping for more after 6 months. I reassure myself that my skin will adapt better by losing slower, I haven't had any hair loss, etc. But I am 54 and ready to live my life! This baggage is in my way and keeping me from living my life the way I want to. A few months ago, the nurse put me on Topomax to help with cravings (as my insurance will not pay for Wegovey or other "weight loss" meds- I was a self pay for the surgery). Several months after the surgery I asked the question . . does the Dr. make everyones' stomach in surgery the same resulting 20% size?? or is everyone's different because ... Patient A's stomach could hold 5 lbs of food, and patient B could only hold 1 lb of food. So did they both end up with same size stomach pouch? The answer is no. He gives you stomach pouch that is 20% of YOUR stomach size. So that is why some people can hold more than others. Makes sense. Kind wish I had thought about it pre surgery though! I'd asked for an extra small one! LOL I don't feel a lot of restriction anymore. So I am wondering where do I go from here? Should I ask for a different medication or increased dose of topomax? Does Dr. McGowan have a way to do a scan or ultrasound and see if your sutures have come loose or if your pouch has stretched out? Do they have a way to do a revision and put in tighter sutures or make a smaller pouch? and if they do . . is it the same cost as the original surgery? I know I am under their care program for a year that includes nutrition counseling, etc. Is there a cost to continue that after a year? Anyone who knows answers, please let me know. I want to be able to think about things before my zoom call later this week.

Average Weight Loss In 6 Months

Thank you for the responses, Im so happy to see that everyone has done so well with their weight loss. Its very encouraging. Dually noted that each person's weight loss varies and there is no real average per se, I hope I do as well as everyone else here but honestly Ill just be glad to see the scale going in the opposite direction for once

Hi GiGi, I am so very sorry that you lost your Mother. That in itself is enough to rock anyone to their core. Having gone through that loss myself, I cannot encourage you enough to seek help from a grief counselor. Everything else will fall into place.

    Sleeve with high BMI

So my starting BMI was almost 49, and I had 175 lbs to lose to get to my goal weight. I picked the sleeve because I liked how “simple” the concept was, and I knew people who had gotten it and had good results. I did end up losing all my weight and I’m at a 23 bmi today. Honesty either surgery will help- I feel like I went into this determined to get to my goal weight, and ready to make sacrifices. I feel like I see two different attitudes in the first 6 months post op- some people who are trying to use their sleeve to get the weight loss they need and make the lifestyle changes they know they need to embrace long term. Others are trying to see how they can work around the sleeve to get back to the way they used to live, and how they want to eat. I’m the end it’s up to you. I won’t pretend I could have gotten here without the sleeve- it gave me the restriction I needed and the reset to get back to where I should be. But I also couldn’t have gotten here without my own work and determination. You can lose this extra weight- it will just take longer and require a bit more perseverance than the people on the forum looking to lose 50 or 75 lbs.

    Regrets...anyone?

Im gonna go out on a limb here and respectfully disagree. In my lowly opinion, WLS is NOT the cure to mental health problems (in fact, i’d go so far to say it’s probably better to get a handle - or have a plan in place - to deal with one’s mental issues before starting the road to WLS. WLS is a tool for weight loss, nothing more…

Average Weight Loss In 6 Months

I'd lost 75 lbs at the six month point (not counting what I'd lost pre-surgery). But there are so many factors that affect your rate of weight loss that there's really not an "average" amount of weight lost at any given time. If you stick to your program, you'll lose - whether fast or slow.

    Loose Skin

Further to this, i’ve been told as little as a 10lb LOSS after plastics may result in less-than-desired results. While regular skin tissue is more elastic and “shrinkable”, scar tissue is not. BUT… full disclosure, i was impatient and had my procedures 6 months after i reached goal (and TBH, was at a “stable weight” for only the 3 months prior to surgery as i kept losing weight for a bit after goal). Im 3.5 years post wls and 2+ years post plastics now…and so far so good. YMMV.

    Loose Skin

Hi! I had excess skin..and had some of it removed via tummy tick, breast lift and arm lift 14 months post WLS (would have done it earlier but my chosen surgeon was booked) In all only 400g of “material” was removed as it was literally almost all skin (which weighs little) and minimal fat (which weighs lots)…so it had no real impact on my scale weight. Insurance paid for the panniculectumy portion of the TT and i covered the rest. I’m pro-plastics after massive weight loss. Its def a game changer.
  17. Hi Charlie! Hope all goes well for you in your weight loss journey 👍🙏I'm interested to know what happens the day after surgery how do you feel what are you supposed to be doing are you meant to be walking around the day after because I heard some people found it very beneficial to walk to release the gases in the stomach the day after, but wouldn't that be painful with the stitches so fresh?

    expected weight loss curve

Let me try to save you some potential angst and head-banging against walls: There is no way to predict your weight loss. Relying and comparing yourself to averages and statistics (and other people) more often than not results in disappointment. But yes, we all do it anyway. The data out there can be used as a guide, but doesn’t really dictate success. Sounds like you are going into this with a good attitude and a plan. Just a gentle reminder to keep that good attitude when things don’t go according to plan. Good Luck! ❤️

    Day Of Surgery

A week before surgery, I had to shower in a surgical detergent every day. It wasnt the most pleasant body and hair wash. I got to the hospital at 8 am and got checked in. By 12 noon I was dressed in my gown, sexy socks and cap and being wheeled down to Anaesthetics. I was quickly put under and woke up in my room with a drip and the oddest sensation in my lower legs, I had plastic boots on that pulsed. It stops thrombosis.

    Slow Losers Club…..officially *sigh*

Glad to find this thread. I’m definitely a slow loser and I’m trying really hard to stay encouraged. I was 255 my day of surgery. 6 weeks out I weighed in at 249. Not even 10 pounds. And I’m doing everything that I was instructed to do. Staying on the diet, watching my portions, tracking my meals, the 20 20 20, getting the right amount of protein, drinking enough fluid, exercising every day. I am honestly very discouraged to not see any real movement. But it is encouraging to know that I’m not alone. But I’ve definitely had moments where I wondered, what was the purpose of going through all this and getting the surgery, if almost 2 months out, I’m not even at 15 pounds weight loss? The doctors and dietitian say I’m not doing anything wrong and to be patient, but I feel it’s much easier to say that than it is to be dealing with it. Just had to vent that. Now I’m in tears smh. But I’ll keep swimming.

Average Weight Loss In 6 Months

Yes, there are a lot of variations & factors that influence your rate of loss. I’d lost all my weight by 6 months so 31kg (68lbs). I lost another almost 12kgs over about the next 11 months (got slower & slower). Wasn’t intentional. Just trying to sort out maintenance & it seemed to be where my body wanted to be.

    Loose Skin

How many post sleeve or bypass have the dreaded loose skin? Did you get it removed? Im sure its added weight still there and I imagine it could be a few pounds lost if removed. Im almost anticipating it to be bad for me. Im not sure if my insurance would pay or not. Pretty sure its considered cosmetic. I may pay out of pocket just to finally rid myself of it. Good thing is my Dr who does the sleeve also removes excess skin from weight loss but you have to maintain weight for 1 year before its even considered.
  24. I know weight loss varies with everyone but I was wondering what the average weight loss was by 6 months post op for a sleeve? Bypass can throw in their results too If you dont mind sharing what your results were at that milestone month.....thanks
