  1. I was banded yesterday (go ME!) and feel a little miserable today. Totally expected (thanks to this website!), but am feeling a bit nauseated and have severe pain in my right shoulder. Having trouble staying hydrated, haven't ingested anything but Water (sip, sip sip). I am afraid to try and eat "food liquids" that are on my diet plan, such as Protein shake, broth, yogurt, Jello, for fear of making my nausea worse. What did you eat(drink) the first couple of days out from surgery?
  2. Hey everyone, I'm a newbie here. Just had my sleeve done on March 23rd! A little over a month past my 45th birthday - yay me! As much as I psyched myself out about the whole thing, recoup time, etc, I have to say it was a relatively easy recovery and just a tad over two weeks out, physically I feel great. Emotionally...? Feeling a bit discouraged. So like everyone else, I did my 5 day pre-op liquid diet...lost 5 lbs. On surgery day I was 300 and about a week and a half after surgery weighed 282. While I am very happy with that, as soon as I started re-introducing solid food - cottage cheese, baked fish, yogurt, etc (solid but soft foods) my weight ceased! The scale has not budged in 5 days and after weighing myself today I am UP 2 POUNDS. Huh??? I have followed what I should be eating/how much I should be eating, to the T. I've been exercising, getting my Water, etc. I should mention that I was self pay ((ouch)) so you can bet your buns I will do absolutely nothing to go off track and mess this up! I have too much invested. Literally. I put my scale away and will not weigh myself again for at least a week or two if I can hold off that long. I've read about people losing so much in the first month or two and after two weeks I'm already hitting a stall? I'm trying not to let it get me down, but it really has taken the wind out of my sails. I'm wondering now why I did this, and if I will be the statistic ....the small percentage of people that it won't be successful for! Ugh. =( Has anybody else encountered this so early after surgery? Thoughts on why this happens, and if you have experienced it - is there a light at the end of the tunnel? Thank you in advance for your feedback!! Have a great day everyone.

    Protein Shakes?

Just be very careful with the bars, they tend to be very high calorie. Other options for Protein are Hemp Protein powder. I mix this with 4oz of mango purée & 2-4oz of water- tastes great. Greek yogurt, it has tons of protein. unjury chicken Soup flavor. It teases like the broth from ramen soup. String cheese And of course tuna, and the like. Hope this helps.

    hard day

Its amazing to see the different liquid diets people are on. I WISH my doc would allow me to have yogurt. I have my one week follow up tomorrow, and I pray that by some miracle my doc says "go ahead and have some yogurt" I'd be so happy, I'd cry!

    I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE!

Minkypop I feel you!!! I can't stand anything made with artificial sweeteners. I only drink water that's ice cold and if I need to I'll squeeze some lemon or lime juice in it. As for my protein I buy Greek yogurt plain and puréed some fruit (bananas, strawberries, peaches, etc ) for natural sweetness. I can't tolerate whey or any other protein for that matter, so now that I'm five weeks post op I get added protein from beans, poultry, salmon, and other foods that are high in protein. I also drink a glass of Lactaid far free milk every morning. I pray that things get easier for you too as you move from stage to stage in your eating plan.

    I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE!

Maybe you can try yogurt with an unflavored protein powder. Unjury has the best in my opinion. You can also try Isopure which is a water based protein beverage. I don't think it uses aspartame. Good luck
  7. I had sweet potato tonight and was fine. I had chicken from Tyson that is pre marinade Italian. I chopped up extremely small and made a Greek yogurt mayo dip for it from egg face website. So each piece of chicken was dipped. Yum. DOS 12/17/12

    Feel like I'm eating crap

Yeah I am ready for some real meat and not so many carbs. I don't eat a lot of carbs normally so having grits, mashed potatoes, refried Beans, Etc is not my cup of tea. I have had Greek yogurt but dairy and I never got along too well. But it's just a little longer--one more week--and then I can have fish and other higher Protein. Binge Eating Food Funeral

I'm on my pre-op diet and have 6 lbs left to shed by April 8 th . I have been eating protein bars for meal replacements and they really work well with a cup of coffee . I try to stick to the 200 calorie ones and then I will have a container /!serving of Greek yogurt . I find this makes calorie counting easy .
  10. Add melted cheese to the Beans. You will LOVE that. Then add chopped (pureed?) chicken to the beans / cheese. And some seasonings. Mmm ... mmm! Find a luscious flavored Greek yogurt. Twelve grams of Protein at the very least. Most people love it. I did. I was also into nonfat milk -- am a milk drinker. Make some chili and puree it a little (not all the way). Add a dollop or two of sour cream. Did I mention cheese? Mmm ... makes me want to do a week of "soft foods" again.

    February 7, 2011

KabinKitty's Blog KabinKitty's Blog February 7, 2010 [Edit Post] posted 43 minutes ago I am now 5 days Post Op. My surgery on February 2nd actually went better and quicker than the surgeon expected! The day began by driving about 25 miles through the snow and sleet in the dark to the hospital. I had called the night before to make sure the surgery wasn't cancelled. We arrived safe, but 1/2 hour late.....SORRY! Oh well... The prep nurse did not check the messages as I called to let them know we were on the way, but about 1/2 hour late. She was stressed! She was a sweetie and we got through the prep quickly. I was wisked down the hall after the anestheologist told me he gave me something to relax me in my IV. I chattered all the way down the hall, went through some double doors and then I was waking up to the voices telling me, "Jean, your surgery is over". The only pain I had was in my left shoulder (I was warned by the anesthelogist before that this happens often) due to referred pain from the diaphram being irritated. I had a very easy recovery, minus the times the nurses woke me at ungodly times all through the night!! I was exhaused and couldn't wait to get the heck outta Dodge! I had to stay an extra night because I didn't use my bipap machine one night and my heart rate dropped. My surgeon had a cardiologist look at the results and he said he wanted me to stay an extra night. BUMMER! Take your machine people and use it! They only gave me 2 ounces of nasty, salty broth and 3 ounces of Crystal Light for my meals. I finally told one nurse about my surgeon telling me I should have something in front of me all the time!! She said, "Well, you can have popsickles". I ate and ate and ate as many popsickles as they would give me. I even had hubby tell them to keep the broth and Crystal Light, I'll just eat popsickles. I'm on full liquids till my follow-up visit at two weeks. So I've been enjoying juice, popsickles, yogurt, protein drinks and pudding. Today I'm going to puree some soup!! That should taste good on a cold February day (she said with fingers crossed). I feel like I am blessed to have this chance to attain a normal BMI and rid myself of some dangerous comorbidities!

    Bowel Movements

My post op instructions were to use milk of magnesia if needed. I never needed it then. At 6 weeks I added an iron supplement as instructed by my nutritionist. ( two flintstone chewables). Now I mix 1/2 capful miralax into my morning Greek yogurt 2 to 3 days a week and that keeps me at a bm every other day. My doctor said it was best to just dose it to achieve regularity and didn't need it every day.

    hard day

I would check with your dr recommendation but I have had yogurt since my surgery. That is what they served me on day 2 in the hospital. NO fruit or chunks is the criteria for the yogurt. Are you still on a mostly clear liquid diet? Again check with your Dr but I can give you the run down of the list of acceptable food I have if you want
  14. My pureed phase started yesterday, Day 18. I am now allowed purees, greek yogurt, scrambled eggs, cottage cheese, pudding, chicken/tuna salad, and soft oatmeal. 16. I try for 800 calories a day but rarely make it. Usually end up betwen 600 - 750. My doc prefers 3 meals a day with no Snacks but I can't seem to do that. I can't eat enough at any one time to get in enough calories so I am having 5 or 6 small mini-meals a day and that seems to work for me. It is hard to get in enough Water though as eating this frequently means I am often in the "hour" wait after eating solids when I can't drink water. My main sources of Protein are, chicken/turkey deli slices, string cheese, cottage cheese, greek yogurt, Atkins Protein shakes, refried Beans, tuna, egg, sardines.
  17. I sleeved on 4/23. I am not hungry since I am full liquids According to to my log, I was 250 Cal yesterday and close to 500 today. I got in all my Protein and close to all my liquids . I can't wait until I can have yogurt, applesauce, and other things so I can add to my food bank. I am looking forward to getting rid of shots I have to give myself though. My BMI was 50 so I had extra to help in not to blood clot with these shots.

    Constipation

I was sleeved April 27th. I was still having problems then Saturday I made a smoothie with a protein shake, Greek yogurt and strawberries. And I had cherries for a snack. I went 6 times Sunday morning. Haven't gone since I tried Miralax again last night. MOM helped me too but my doc likes Miralax.
  19. Not an expert on this, but from what I've read and heard on here you should be on clear liquids and not yogurt. I think that is the second stage about 2 weeks down the road. I would stick with protein drinks, popsicles, hot broth, water, koolaid (unsugared) and not go to yogurt yet. If I'm wrong please someone who is banded jump right in. I just think she is trying yogurt much too soon.

I'm Back and Banded but sooo hungry

The first 3-4 days I was so swollen I had trouble with even drinks, too. I wouldn't have dared try yogurt. Protein shakes were difficult but I could get them down. Also try diluted cream of wheat or rice or diluted baby Cereal. For some reason that slid down prety well, while I absolutely could NOT get Jello down! Drink, drink, drink. And teeny-tiny sips. I'm one week out now and still had trouble with jello last night. The worst part is when there's a traffic jam -- something trying to go down and a burp trying to come up. I realized it was mostly with the Protein Shakes, I think because I blend them up and they get a lot of air in them, which then has to be burped up. So keep it SLOW. The faster you drink, the more air you swallow.

    6 weeks out - stalled for last 3 :(

For my protein, I eat eggs, refried Beans, cheese sticks (sometimes wrapped in a slice of light deli ham or turkey if it's a meal rather than a snack), salmon or fish in general, a bit of chicken, quinoa (sometimes a tbsp as a side dish if I'm still hungry after my meat portion at dinner). I currently don't eat anything (other than the SF popsicles, which count as a liquid) that doesn't have protein in it, because I just don't have the room. I hit between 45 and 60 grams of protein daily at 5 weeks out, which the doctor said is fine at this point. He is more concerned with me staying hydrated and said the protein will come as I'm able to eat more food (and he said VERY firmly to not rush this point but take it very slow...which is okay with me) My sleeve doesn't tolerate milk products or Greek yogurt, but it's fine with cheese (but not cottage cheese. It just tastes funky post-surgery. I loved it pre-surgery). Protein shakes make me gag because they're so sweet...although I did okay with the Chike coffee protein when I was still full liquids. For more protein/recipe ideas, check out According to Eggface or the Bariatric Foodie. They have a lot of suggestions (that's where I go to look for recipes)
  22. Why cheese? If you are going to eat dairy, IMO yogurt is a healthier choice. And why fruit instead of green veggies? Green veggies are much lower carb. All that said, losing 1 kg in a week is great IMO. Does your bariatric team have a specific goal that you must meet? It sounds like it, from your post, but personally I think expecting more than 1 kg/week is a high and kind of cruel standard.
  23. I had my sleeve surgery 1/20/16 and I took a 3 day trip to Las Vegas on 2/11/16 (3 weeks post op). Now, I know everyone recovers differently but I was completely useless for the first 2.5weeks. I was worried about taking my trip but started to get some energy back a couple days before I left. I completely understand what you're going through. I apologize in advance, this may be lengthy, especially since it's fresh in my mind. I think the most difficult thing is going to be food. At three weeks I was supposed to be on a puréed diet. That was incredibly difficult while traveling!!! I am having trouble with Protein shakes post op, no matter what I try I just can't stomach them. That would have been my go to, but I just couldn't do it. I ate mostly yogurt and eggs and those 1 oz packages of peanut or almond butter (I can't remember the brand. It's all natural, no sugars or anything). But, I also ate things that weren't puréed. I didn't have a choice in some places. There just aren't many options on a puréed diet. I did get sick once from eating 2 French fries. I just didn't want to spend so much money on an entire meal when I really shouldn't have been eating any of the foods they had to offer and would only be able to eat a couple bites anyway, and I figured French fries were soft so I just took a couple from someone else's plate. Not a good idea! No more fried things for me!! It didn't help that our hotel room didn't have a fridge or anything, so I couldn't buy yogurts or anything to keep in the room. I did, however, make sure I had a Water bottle on me at all times. I'm not sure what stage of the diet you will be on during your trip, but I would definitely consider what your options would be. As far as rescheduling your trip, and I'm assuming that this is just for pleasure since you're wondering about postponing, I would do some research online or by phone. Look at where you will be staying and local restaurants and any outings you have planned. Most places offer menus online, try to find things that will work for your diet. Even call them and see if they will be accommodating. Also, look at who you will be traveling with. Do they know about your surgery and diet restrictions? Are they going to be supportive and understanding? I think if you will be able to find foods that will fit your diet you will be fine. I had energy back by that point and besides having trouble with food, I had a phenomenal trip. Good luck with your surgery and have fun in Hawaii!

Cheating on day 6 post op

Ok, first off the hunger is probably real. Mine was. I was hungry right after surgery and didn't stop being hungry ALL THE TIME until about 2 weeks post op, then things got better. This is different for some people, the lucky ones are never hungry, the unlucky have to deal with hunger. That said, I get so frustrated reading posts from people who cheat early after surgery. This is a hint at epic failure down the road. If you cannot control yourself while healing from having your *stomach cut out*, you are going to be hard pressed to control yourself once the hard healing is over. Seek professional help instead of cheating. There are plenty of ways to alleviate hunger without making stupid (sorry but crackers, chips, crunchy anything, hard to digest meats, things with seeds, popcorn etc are really freekin' stupid) choices. I can't believe some of the things people decide to shovel down their throats while their bellies are healing!! STOP IT ALL OF YOU!!! I thrived on yogurt, pudding, and cream Soups. I made it through, so can anyone. Really, if you feel you must cheat, see your team psychologist. If you don't have one, find one. This is possibly the single most important thing you can do in terms of getting a handle on long term success NOW.

Cheating on day 6 post op

I found myself feeling "hungry" during my first two weeks post op too. Looking back I'm fairly certain that was due to two main reasons: 1) gas bubbles gurgling through my system mimicked the rumbling of an empty tummy and 2) lack of food diversity. My plan did allow cream of wheat (very thin and supplemented with protein powder), yogurt and pudding during the full liquids phase. It helped to alternate protein shakes with something like Greek yogurt that has more substance. Are you meeting your protein goals everyday? When you feel hungry you should be reaching for a ready made shake or a cup of broth or even a v-8 if you need some diversity in your diet. Please reach out to your NUT or program for help.
