    Soft food/Puree Out of Town

    At barely two weeks out I’d try to stick more to soups, scrambled eggs, & other more puréed foods that more easily slide down & require little chewing. Look at soft & very tender slow cooked meats. You could mash up mince, sausages (or vegan alternatives), the fillings of steamed wontons or gyoza & be okay. Add any sauces or gravies available yo keep them more moist. Try a soft flaked white fish that has been poached or steamed. I’d avoid anything breaded or fried as the meat will likely be more dry. Go slowly & if in doubt don’t. Remember the staged return to eating diet is to protect your healing tummy & not strain all those sutures & staples holding it together with food that is too coarse, dry, dense or difficult to digest. Pack some shakes & pre prepared soups, grab some yoghurts from a local store, etc. as a back up. Nothing stopping you speaking with the caters at the conference to explain your situation. You don’t have to tell them you had bariatric surgery you can just say an abdominal surgery that requires a more restricted diet as you’re still healing.
  2. Focus on eating your protein first then allowed vegetables. There were times I’d eat my protein only & nothing else for a meal. Many do continue to supplement their diet with protein shakes or add protein powders to their coffee, soups, yoghurt, etc. I found the shakes awful so I found a good high protein yoghurt & yoghurt drink (you can make your own drink by blending yoghurt & milk). And as a bonus more fluid (not the yoghurt of course). Don’t worry if you don’t hit that protein goal at first or every day. It’s not easy when our portions are so small in the early stages. As long as you’re close & making an effort. Remember you are taking multivitamins too at the moment which help you get the vitamins & minerals in you need. You should be having regular blood tests which will highlight if you are low in anything. I was a low calorie person (only got to about 900 at 6 months & my goal) - wasn’t hungry & couldn't eat more. But do check with your dietician as we all have different needs & the change as we continue to lose. PS - Stalls are common & part of the process. Just keep to your plan & ride through it. It will break. They often last 1-3 weeks with the first starting around week 3+/- so you’re right on track.
  3. Keep things simple to begin. The old meat & three veg works well & is easy to prep. Focus on eating your correct portion of protein first & then a few well cooked vegetables as @Spinoza suggested but would add only then eat any allowed carbs if you are able. There were often times I’d only eat the protein content of a meal in the beginning. You may find some meats too heavy to begin. Some struggle with chicken breast or steak. Keep meats moist with sauces & gravies or cooking styles (like grilling can make meat too dry). Once you feel more comfortable & your tummy is happier you can be more adventurous with your cooking. Matt Weiner is great (check out his videos too) but he does focus on a more vegetable heavy low animal protein diet. It just depends on your eating preferences. I love eating vegetables & add legumes to some meals but I also am a carnivore. Hope you find a good local dietician/nutritionalist soon.

    What does your surgeon & dietician say? You may have reached your new set point (the weight your body is happiest at) & as @catwoman7 said it is harder to lose & maintain at a lower weight if where you are now is your set point. Remember not everyone reaches their goal weight. Generally, eating 1000 calories should result in a loss. I’m only an inch taller than you, am not really active, & can maintain at my lower weight consuming about 1400 calories. Though we are all different & our bodies have different needs. The pouch reset isn’t a physical reset but a mental reset. If you’re already following your plan re calorie intake,food choices, & meeting protein, fluid & macro goals you are doing all the right things. Mashed potatoes & scrambled eggs are in the plan for many people from the third week. What you are then only affects you then. It doesn’t affect what is happening now. I agree with @summerseeker. Give your team a call @Sammy C & see if you can negotiate moving to al, or maybe some purées. Being in liquids only for 6+ weeks seems excessive but your surgeon may have a reason for it.

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

    I am just going to post an update because this has been kind of my diary thread (never having started an actual weight loss diary). 16 months post op, I have been the same weight for about 6 or 8 weeks now (142lbs) so I think I'm done losing. BMI is 21. I eat about 1500 calories a day and I think I'll have to stay close to that forever (so small compared to what I was eating 16 months ago!!) I can eat a good full cup of food at a sitting. I can chug about 7 or 8 swallows of fluid in one go. Loving my new life. I hope all my November 2021 buddies are too xxx

    Feb sleeves unite!

    Such varying experiences on here I see. I was sleeved on 2/22/23 and am completely on all normal foods even a few days before the 4 week mark. I do have to separate eating and drinking. It is amazing to have control over food. Felt amazing to have one slice of pizza and be able to say no to more. I actually miss drinking a 'big ole chug' of liquid a lot more than eating! I have had a few doubts along the way but constantly remind myself that I was never able to consistently stay at a lower weight for the first 40 years so why do I think I could do it now without the sleeve...."food" for thought!
  7. I feel your frustration OP. Hitting your stride can be really difficult. My advice 5 weeks out would be to try to hit your fluid goal and your protein goal as many days as you can, and to let everything else fall into place around those. Don't fret too much about calories at your stage - you are unlikely to be able to physically get enough in to gain weight, or even be close to maintaining your current weight - you are programmed to lose right now. Be mindful of everything you take in and aim to form habits for a new and healthy life. I wish you the very best of luck.
  8. 700 would be the very minimum to aim for. 300 is way too low. Your body needs fuel. You may find it easier to to have a combination of fluids and and soft foods until you can see the dietician. There is no one size fits all. Just do the best you can. At five weeks you are still healing and finding your way. I found that baked beans or soft scrambled eggs (including the yolks) was a tasty way to get my protein in. Warmed tomato juice and added my own protein powder. Stalls will happen along the way. Do yourself a favor and stay off the scales.

    Sleeved on 2/8 and just had my 6 week check up. Cleared for all foods as long as I stick to 400-600 calories. Found that I can eat a small amount of the mushroom chicken and pepper steak from Panda Express. It has been a life saver a couple times I was out and desperately needed a some calories/about an ounce. Also, full clearance to workout. Starting slow with resistance and weight training.
  10. I'm almost 3 weeks post op (bypass). I plan to ask my NUT, but how did you measure your food, especially in the early days? Previously, when calorie counting, I would weigh my food. But now when I read the suggested meal plan it says stuff like 3 tablespoons cream of wheat and 2 tablespoons chicken (made that combo up 😅). So I've been measuring by volume because I have a one ounce scoop/or tablespoon. But there is a considerable difference between the volume and weight for most foods, so I'm curious!

    I found I had to change what I watched. So, I found a whole positive resource on YouTube about weight loss with healthy diet (no fads) and exercise. I also found gentle exercise videos and mental health videos. My goal was/is to find one new positive healthy habit to add to my life per week. This week was massage. It felt wonderful and I’m so grateful the PTO at my school paid for all the teachers to have one! Next is eye massaging I do for myself. Find other things to watch/read while in recovery beyond what you did before. Push yourself to be your best self
  13. You are doing so well. I really struggled to get protein in too, its tough in the beginning. The advice I was given was just do my best every day. You will loose your stamina if you don't keep your calorie count but you have a few weeks grace yet. Eating high protein yogurts and drinking a shake a day should give you 50 grams of protein. This is a great boost of energy and if you choose wisely, low cal too. At the end of my day, I total my protein, using a app and if I am short I have some cheese, skimmed milk or a protein pudding. It will all get easier in the weeks to come

    This is brutal for you. Some people are eating regular foods in week 2. The randomness of these diet restrictions are never ending. Ring your team and see if you can get the go a head to go to at least puree stage

    ESG Surgery 03/14/23!

    @L. Knight Happy to hear your surgery went well and you are doing great! I have a zoom call with my nutritionist tomorrow, looking forward to it, have some questions answered, etc. Just found out I have a work trip coming up in two weeks, it's only for 2 days so that's not too bad but for all the crushing of pills and sipping involved, may pose to be difficult. It's one thing to work in your own company's building but going into another agency - not sure I feel comfortable excusing myself to crush some pills and mix them and sip/gag them down-lol. Six weeks can't come fast enough! How are you doing with getting your fluids in? Doing ok?
  16. I am pretty much in the same boat as you. So, no help here but commiseration. I find it very difficult to break 600 calories and I am three months out. Met with my nutritionist last week and the only advice she really had was "you have to eat more protein". I don't know if anyone other than wls patients understand how hard that can be.
  17. I am almost 5 weeks post-op, and am frustrated. I joined another site to help me track my foods, and yesterday I consumed less than 300 calories for a whole day and was nowhere near my protein goals. Last week I was able to make some egg whites and I had a 1,000 calorie day and felt like that was too much. My dietician told me to aim for 700 per day, with a minimum of 80g of protein. I feel like there's no consistency. Yall, I am really struggling. Do I need to go back to my liquid diet where I was getting all my protein? I've been at a stall for almost 2 weeks and don't see my dietician again until mid-April.

    I'm going to do that 5 day pouch reset starting Tuesday to see what happens. Sammy listen to your doctor. I think I'm stuck because I started at 2 weeks to eat scramble eggs, mashed potatoes, etc.

    Hey guys!! I’m 3 weeks post surgery, and I’m REALLY struggling to stay on liquids, my doc wants me to stay on liquids till the 20th of April. I’m already licking the spoon of eggs when I make my daughter eggs…and I feel terrible because why can’t I just stick to the liquids? In the afternoons I really struggle and want to eat actual food so bad! Does anyone els have this problem?

    I eat about 1200 to 1300 a day. My dietician recommendations. Any less and I have not got the energy to do the daily things I want to. I stopped loosing regular weight drops about 6 months ago. I am still on a downwards curve but now its very slow, I would say about 4lbs every 2 months. I get a good drop then am up again for weeks until I get very slowly to the low weight again, then its a good drop and repeat. I put your weight and height in 'My fitness pal' and it says for you to loose 1lb a week, you could eat 1400 calories on a active lifestyle. So you should still be loosing but some say your body will be holding onto every calorie it can while you are on very low cals. What does your team say ? I would say, stick with what you are doing and see where you are in 3 months [ unless 1000 calories is too restrictive for you to maintain.]

    Don't forget your hormones will be reeking havoc on your feelings and moods. I had a terrible time in my first few months post op. I spent 6 weeks curled up in a ball on my sisters couch. Cried multiple times a day for weeks thought I was going to die etc etc. it does get better and a lot easier every week

    I hope so . Maybe I'm a late bloomer in the buyers remorse. Idk. But I think I'm going to integrate stuff in my life that feel more like me versus spending all the mental headspace trying to count etc. I think it's getting to me a lot. I'm almost done with phase 2. I'll be beyond excited for pureed. And that will be a week only. So I oops today but feel letting out a huge amount of emotions . I think a huge part of it is i am not a dairy person so being shoved all this dairy i to me makes me sick which adds to the mental turmoil. But im gonna get back on track. *rolls up sleeves and looks at my shake in disgust* let's do this.

    I had 1/2 protein shake, we went to a sushi restaurant 4 oysters smashed, miso soup serving, blended up another soup when home,4 fish bites smashed with popsicles through out the day i feel like its a lot now. I'm always trying to meet my protein goal popsicles dont hurt ever & I like them i think im struggling with my eating habits I am out of town at a conference next week. Im concerned because they asked me my eating preference and I said vegan. I'm worried about getting my protein. And having nothing to eat. only thing that hurt today was the fish bites

    Aah the joy of constipation. Add a soluble, non swelling, fibre to your shakes to help & try to keep on top of it. You’re not eating much so not going everyday is to be expected. I used to take a stool softener if I got to the third (sometimes 4th) day with out any movement. Any longer & it became more difficult to break, more uncomfortable & then painful when you do go. I diluted my hideous shakes as well to dilute the flavour & graininess & got bonus fluids. Didn’t care if it took me two hours to drink it. Just sipped until I was done. It can be hard at first to meet your protein & fluid goals. As long as you’re making an effort & slowly getting closer. It does get easier. Avoid social media. I think it’s the worst when it comes to promoting unhealthy eating behaviours, food choices & excessive portion sizes. I developed an aversion to those types of images. I would start to feel ill looking at them. I also avoided live tv & would record any programs so I could fast forward the food ads. Thank goodness for ad free steaming services. What was odd was that I could watch baking & cooking shows. British Bake-off, British MasterChef (all three), Great British Menu & Top Chef were my favourites & they didn’t make me hungry. Don’t have any suggestions for coping with your house mates’ eating habits. I live alone. You can’t force them to eat as you do but maybe you could let them know it does make it difficult for you & you may have to leave the room they’re eating in. It is something you will always have to face. I rarely eat sweet foods but in time I reached a point where it didn’t bother me if people around me eat cake, deserts, etc. My niece had a box of cakes, brownies, cake pops, whoopi pies, cheese cakes, cup cakes, etc. samples for her 13th birthday last week. Everyone was filling their plates with a variety of things & I was fine - I ate a strawberry. As I said before - it does get easier over time. Just got to work out how you can manage it now - what works for you.

    Portion size is & always will be a consideration but more so in the beginning because of the many nerves cut during your surgery I mentioned in my previous post. It can be easier to eat more than we actually should. I was advised 1/4 - 1/3 cup of food from puree slowly increasing until I was eating about a cup around 6 months. Check with your dietician about portion size (& calorie goals) as plans do differ. I certainly couldn’t eat more than what I was advised & took ages to eat it. I sipped on my diluted soups & shakes for a couple of hours. During the liquid stage I are two ‘meals’ a day. Not hungry or interested in any more. From purée I ate three meals & no snacks. One or two snacks (fruit or soft cheese or yoghurt) were added later around third month a think. Ten popsicles seem a lot. Are you eating them for their fluid content or because you’re looking them as food & maintaining old snacking/eating habits?? While they contain no added sugar they do contain sweeteners - artificial or sugar alternatives like monk fruit. Therefore they are still feeding your desire for sweet foods. Some develop a sensitivity to sugar alcohols (the artificial sweeteners ending in ‘ol’) & experience bloating, diarrhoea, etc. I couldn’t have potatoes either but could have rolled oats from purée (instant to begin so easier on the tummy & very thin & milky). Took me three days to eat a serve & it was the only carb I ate (except the bite or two of vegetables I had). We all need a small amount of carbs & oats are considered a better carb. I’ll say it again plans are different.
