  1. Great story! It's NSV's like that that really remind us not to focus so intently on the scale. Congrats!

    Did you exercise today?

Tapshoes, thanks so much for your encouragement, you're always so upbeat, and I just want you to know I really appreciate it! I thought I was going to be really sore after that long jog, but I took a nice hot bath that night, and it really seemed to relax and help. (Small NSV - I usually take showers, so it's been awhile since I've had a nice hot bubble bath. I just have to say how nice it is to have my body AND the bath Water both fit in the tub!) ShinyHappymommy, I'm so jealous you can run outside! I'm like tapshoes, I gotta wait until April or May. Although I still can't run - I tried it on my treadmill, I get out of breath and don't last long. Maybe one day, I'm working on it. Yesterday I only got 2 miles in on my treadmill . . . just a tiresome day, but I do try and get a little something in everyday. Writing things out here has been like a journal of sorts for me, it keeps me going! Keep up the GREAT work all, and thanks for all your inspiration!
  5. When you really wonder if this is the right call, read through this section...http://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/195065-you-know-you-lost-weight-when/ If you don't spontaneously tear up at times, you are NOT a candidate. I still do. It's amazing to me how over a year out I hear about someone's struggles that they have overcome after losing weight how it brings back memories of my past struggles. I don't think those weight PTSD memories are ever going to go away. But these NSV's always bring me hope and happiness.

    Another NSV today

woo hooo!!! Those are great nsv's!! I need to go shopping too, but I get terrified! I'm pretty sure I'm not in plus sizes anymore, but every time I venture into the 'other' section, I feel like the plus size police will be waiting for me to drag me back to the plus size corner. haha
  7. I am day 2 postop and my gas pains are bad. I can barely move sometimes. I also have a tightness behind my sternum with painful respiration if i breathe too deeply. Has anyone else experienced this? Also, I have my first NSV! My blood pressure has been 110/70 for most of my life. The last few years it has started creeping up and was in the 130/90 range before surgery. Since my surgery, every time the nurse checked my blood pressure it was around 105/55! Goodbye borderline high BP! So exciting. I hope it stays like that.
  8. I'm doing digging being a member in good standing in the First Church/Cult of Protein. Also all the little NSV's. May not be the clearest picture I've ever taken, but notice there is nearly a foot of slack in my seat belt on my flight yesterday. A year ago I was fretting having to use the extender (which gets you kicked out of the exit row). There was lots of space. Think about all the extra wear and tear we are not subjecting ourselves to by being smaller.
  9. Hey everyone! I cant believe a year has flown by so fast. I know when I was pre-op I used to seek out these threads to read other's experiences, so I wanted to share mine too. My start weight was 277 the day I scheduled the consult for bariatric surgery, and I was 255 the day of surgery. The first 3 months were a bit of a whirlwind. I dropped 20 pounds in the first month, and I thought it would stay that fast, boy was that some realistic thinking on my part. As real food was reintroduced during my second month I learned what the foamies were...oh my goodness, so not fun. I lost 10 pounds during month two and I remember feeling discouraged and having to reassess my motivation for this surgery. Having to remind myself that this was a change for the rest of my life and that it was okay if the weight didn't just fly off, because if I kept working with my body, then my body would have no choice but to become healthy. The next month I lost 9 pounds and learned that if I didn't chew my food really, really well, that it could get stuck and hurt like hell until it made me vomit. This was not a fun time, but alas I learned, and learned relatively;y quickly. Month 4 came and two things of note happened. I lost 5 pounds and felt confused and a little lost as to what was happening with my body. Also, my hair started falling out like there was no tomorrow! That became my new normal for awhile. 5 pounds a month, hair falling out. Somewhere around 8 months out my hair loss stabilized, but by then I had lost about 2/3rds of the volume I had. Biotin never helped, but I took it from the day I was cleared to begin vitamins post op. Around March I was 6 months post op and I had my first month with no loss, where I actually gained. I was aghast. I had this weird feeling like I wasn't going to get where I needed to be unless I started working harder. So that was the point where I finally changed. I started counting every macro, and working out 3 days a week in April. Initially walking and increasing in length/intensity. That was the beginning of my adventure into exercise. I currently run/walk in intervals a 5k a minimum of 4 times a week. I have never felt stronger or more alive. I was the girl who only ran when chased, I had no idea that underneath all that weight was a body that felt happy when it ran. A brain that felt at peace when it focused on my breathing. I'm still losing at the rate of 5 pounds a month, total weight loss since March of 2016 is 110 pounds. Biggest change has been my brain. I stopped worrying about the scale. It goes down because I'm living the way I am supposed to be. It doesn't have to be big numbers, because this is the way I live my life now. I don't know if that makes sense anywhere except inside my head, but I hope you get it. I only this week made it into the "overweight" bmi category and I have 27 more pounds to go before I am considered to be of a healthy weight. Loose skin? Yep! I'm not even mad about it. To be honest I didn't expect as much on my thighs and thought most of it would be around my midsection, but it's everywhere. I don't think it will ever bother me enough to have it removed, but only the future knows for sure. Dumping. Now to be fair I had my gallbladder removed a few years prior to gastric bypass surgery, so I already had issues with dumping. Bile buildup has a laxative effect on me. If I go more than 12 hours without eating, then just a sip of water can send me running to the bathroom. Fats don't typically bother me and I avoid sugar because I don't like the way it feels when my insulin spikes and then drops. It's scary and not fun. I get fuzzy and light headed, my stomach feels blah and my heart races. I'm human though and I challenge my biology on occasion. Ice cream doesn't love me anymore. It melts in my pouch and foams back up and just feels like it's sitting at the top of my esophagus and making me burp little foamy ice cream burps...I think the only reason I am okay with halo top is because the sugar alcohols scare me enough that I only ever eat a tiny bit because I don't want to live in my bathroom lol. Support systems! These are so important. My spouse is amazing. He's my biggest cheerleader and my companion in all things, including exercise! Make sure the people in your life only want what's best for you. Current diet is low carb (under 20 grams a day) moderate protein (60-80 grams) and moderate fat. This will likely be how I eat the rest of my life and I am okay with that. When I do consume more sugar, my brain starts to crave sweets and I feel like I have to fight with myself. For me personally it's not worth it anymore. That last sentence is a huge nsv for me. It's so weird and amazing/awesome to be nearing 40 and finally feeling like I'm not powerless to food anymore.

    Non Scale Victories?

I am not part of the April group, but my biggest NSV was at the gym not long ago. A guy came up to me and asked me how I got my legs so toned. I was so shocked. I just pointed to the machines that I use all the time. They have really helped my thighs which are not flabby at all. I wish I could say the same thing about my arms.
  13. ...lucky me... Got into a previously tight bathing suit and it felt loose, how often does that happen? And took my kids to a family dance at the school last night and was sitting in a chair, looked down at my thighs and thought, "Whose long thin thigh is that?" Honestly, didn't recognize my own thigh, or at least hadn't really looked at them in a while. Yes, the banded life is good. How about you? You had any NSV moments lately? Do share.
  14. I can't wait for the NSV's. I want to be comfortable enough to go to the gym pool and swim again, or even join a masters swim club! I want to go sky diving! I want to be able to clean house, play with my daughter and teach all day without being exhausted all the time or having to take breaks constantly. I'd like to buy clothes that are cute and make me feel like me and not someone else. To be able to look in the mirror and smile because I can see me and not the lbs of shame. thank you for this post! It is so uplifting and fun to see everyones aspirations.

Gone For Good Club- August 2006

wow, Paul... new avatar looks great! Well guys... great NSV's this weekend! My hubby's cousins saw me for the first time since surgery and they were just full of compliments. Huge ego boost! I went and saw the Bellamy Brothers and they rocked! I looked good that night too!!! I am wearing a size 12L Levis right now and I don't know that I have ever worn that size in my life! I think it is possible that I might one day fit into an 8!!!

Gone For Good Club- August 2006

C - 261, -17.5, -0 (once again this week I am the same weight) but I won't complain because the heat and Water retention have me going up and down as much as 3 lbs - happily landed back down on weigh-in day - I'm thankful WTG Cheri on that itsy bitsy teeny weeny bathing suit! My new NSV was buying two new camis yesterday - two sizes smaller than the last one I bought! What is everyone else's new NSV????? Post and let us know!
  17. I did the BIG closet purge today . . . cleaned out ALL the 3x stuff (HURRAY!!) and organized everything else by size. I was previously wearing a size 24 jean and I got into my old size 20s . . . and they were LOOSE!! I also put on a dress I wore when I first met my husband (I think I was around 200-210 then) and it fit . . . snugly, but it fit. I'm SO excited!

1 week out and sick of soup

Oh, sorry! LOL! I didn't read the title....no idea what POPT is, but NSV is a Non Scale Victory. Basically anything good related to weight loss that isn't actually reflected on the scale. For example, I'm looking forward to being able to cross my legs again. That will be one happy NSV for me!
  20. Hi all! Just wanted to check in. Here is a quick pic of my face before and after! So far so good, no complications...lots of NSV, 50 pounds GONE!!!!! Need to up my exercise! Will be doing that this week! Hope you all are doing well!!!!!

    NSV lately?

Here are my two NSVs, small as they are: I ordered a jacket to replace my old, big down coat in one size smaller. It fits. Not perfectly, but it fits! Also, my gym made new t-shirts. I asked for an XL (I usually work out in XXL men's shirts but they're big now) and didn't notice until I got home that they gave me a L. And it fits, well. I almost cried.

    NSV lately?

I love every single one of these NSVs @@proudgrammy
  23. OMG people! I just busted my lip raising up my knee to tie my shoe. I am in my office chair and I leaned forward slightly raised my foot off the ground to be able to reach my foot to tie my lace, and I raised my knee so high I smashed my lip! No belly in the way, so it just kinda "wham"...sooo happy no one saw it here, yet had to share...I take them where I can get them!

    Didn't Know Myself

That is one of the awesomest NSVs I've heard =) What a neat surprise!
  25. I finally fit into my leather jacket (it's been about 5 years) and my very favorite pair of Jeans~ both in the same week. I finally feel "pretty" and am enjoying putting on makeup, picking out my clothes and am no longer just throwing something on and running out the door.
