VSG surgery in hopes to cure PCOS and have children!
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to Cat0430's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hey hon! I also have PCOS. I had my son naturally but then had 10 losses before I was diagnosed with PCOS (even though I have all the classic signs and symptoms, not a lot of doctors knew about it). This was back in 2005. I went on birth control for a few months, then had to take Metformin and Clomid to get pregnant with my daughter. I had her in 2006 (my kids are 8 1/2 years apart because of the PCOS) and after I had her, I was never able to get pregnant again. My hormones are all over the place and I CANNOT lose weight and keep it off no matter what I do (I always have initial success but it never lasts). I was told that bariatric surgery is huge in helping PCOS patients get pregnant because weight loss is the #1 thing that helps. It *can* help with hormones, but not always. The weight loss is really the biggest factor for PCOS patients. But that can also make birth control pills (which regulate periods, add estrogen to low estrogen hormones) more effective, as well as fertility meds (Metformin and Clomid, Femara, etc) more effective. Also makes your body healthier for pregnancy (almost no diabetes or high blood pressure issues). So the surgery is definitely huge for helping PCOS patients have a baby. Good luck!!! -
How many CARBS, SUGAR, FAT, CALS and I suppose to get
RickM replied to KJ_vsg's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I never worried about carbs and fats while losing, as if the calories are low enough to promote the desired weight loss, and the protein is appropriate maintaining your muscle mass (typically somewhere around 60-80 g per day for women, 80-100 g for men), then the carbs and fats will be functionally very low. A good default for calories seems to be in the 600-800 range (some with stronger metabolisms can get away with more, but it's good to start low because it's very hard to cut back once you're used to one level). RDA for fiber is around 25 g per day, and that seems to work well for most on a bariatric diet. Sugar should usually be minimized, particularly added sugar in processed or packaged food; that which is naturally occuring in our fruits and veg are less of an issue, and has a purpose for us (or nature wouldn't have put it there - the added stuff in the packaged foods is just there to sell it to us and make up for the flavor stripped out by the processing. -
What do i need in my cupboards and fridge when i get home?
manitobamama replied to Ninni's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yeah chewing my meds in order to swallow them was more than disgusting but had to do what I needed to take them when dissolving them wasn't an option. Look for an app called the bariatric pyramid. It shows you what you should have on hand. Hope this helps Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App -
My experience with pre-lapband testing.
jena replied to CAROL99's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Can you appeal? Don't lose faith in the lap-band. Keep after it! I'm guessing because you are on Medicaid you have a much harder time than private pay or privately insured. Keep after it, though. States are beginning to look what Medicaid covers and they are removing bariatric surgery from their covered procedures. At least that's what I've heard from one of the seminars I attended. Insurance companies are doing the same thing. I've got BCBS of GA and when I told my surgeons office who I was covered by she said "Oh, BCBSGA won't cover any bariatric surgery." So I'm self pay and going to a great place in Mexico. You are doing everything right. You have completed your pre-op items. You've even lost almost 50 pounds and you have it documented. Keep on pushing! I suspect when you do find a doctor, you will be able to get in right away! This may seem like an obvious question, but have you talked to anyone at Medicaid? Hugs and don't give up! Hi gang! I'm not sure if you guys remember, but I have BC/BS PPO Michigan, individual coverage. They just removed all bariatric procedures from their coverage this past January 2009. They said it is just not covered. My doctor CALLED them this past Friday, and I'm not sure who he talked to, but my status moved from "denied" to "pending".... my agent who is my liaison with BC/BS told me they don't cover, no exceptions... however, it looks like they might actually consider this? I'm not going to hold my breath.... I'm probably going to have to pay somewhere about $6-8K for the procedure (I'm getting hiatal hernia surgery along with it) out of pocket, which I was prepared for... but can I actually HOPE that my insurance company is going to do what's right, and cover this for me?? I am not getting my hopes up... but it sure would be nice not to have to pay that much $$ for my surgery! I'm taking prayers where I can get them! Karen

Bariatric cookbook available for free from Rockridge press
MrsSugarbabe replied to Detroit_25's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I registered to receive my copy of the Fresh Start Bariatric Cookbook, but when I received the email and click the link for the download, The Best Bodybuilding Cookbook downloaded instead. I'm waiting to hear back from the publisher as to why this happened. There should still be some good recipes in it and let's face it, we are in the bodybuilding business as we adjust to a new live with our sleeves. -
Snarky comments
Born in Missouri replied to kingcake's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
This is particularly disturbing... assuming that your co-workers are also nurses. Where is their empathy? I can't believe that their main focus is on how much time you might get off. As for the "nurse" attempting to dissuade you from having the surgery, that's just bizarre. If this had been a procedure for a different disease, ie. a " real disease" , I doubt if there would be the same level of indifference. It's hard to respect people who show such little concern for the health and well-being of others. Just curious, but is the co-worker who is trying to talk you out of the procedure, also obese? Sometimes, it seems, people who don't have the courage to have bariatric surgery themselves or who can't afford it (if not covered by insurance), try to sabotage the decision of those who want the surgery. To hell with your pin-headed co-workers. Where were they in 2013 when the AMA classified obesity as a disease? It is also evident that you are basically a nice person. After all, you still want to be polite even when you tell them to take a hike! (Hey, that almost rhymes.) -

Calories
Healthy_life replied to Losing the old Harley's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm four years out. I am a distance runner. I lift and train like a beast. Did you ever think you would have to work at eating more calories in your life? *smile* Transitioning in to maintenance mode take some adjusting. I used a TDEE calculator similar to yours. It says maintaining for me is 2166 calories. Honestly, I gain weight at the macros it suggests. I can burn 700 to 1000 calories on long run days. My diet changes to support my activity. https://tdeecalculator.net TDEE did not work for me. It may work for you. Your calories and macros will look different than mine. (age sex height weight activity is a factor) I had to change up the numbers from the TDEE to find what works for my body. Hate to say this but it has been a lot of trial and error. All instructions from dietician are different Below is my instructions Add low glycemic carbs Sweet potato, whole wheat bread/pasta and brown rice. If you are looking to get more calories in, eat small meals often. Eat as often as you need you need to get the calories in and stay within your calories/macros. Maintaining is a new mindset. It's no longer 3 meals two small snacks. Grazing has always been mentioned as a bariatric no no. Think of this as a maintaining health graze - several meals to hit your maintaining calories and macros. Wishing you the best, Jenn -
Very slow weight loss?
astarwalker replied to astarwalker's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
HI Monica. So after talking to several nutritionists specialized in bariatrics, and researching, I now made peace with the rate of my weight loss. Somebody here posted a table of weight ranges according to age and height. This also helped. I am 61 will be 62 in two months. Have had already major weightloss with my lap band years ago, so this is my second surgery. All nutritionists said these two details are a big factor that will affect my weight loss. I have now lost a total of 33 pounds in 3 months. My lab tests just came in and I am in the absolute normal range, which means no more cholesterol. No more diabetes. No more high blood pressure. This in itself is already my great victory! I now [emoji817] % fir sure that I will loose the rest 20-25 Kgs (40-45 pounds). If it takes a month longer that is also fine. My full bonus is already here, I am medicine free!! I feel great (except for the occasional gas which sometimes, drives me and my hubby crazy kkk) and hope everyone here has great success with their journey. We have all carried our weight too long with all the pain and I suffering that it involved. Now we are all getting a second lease. This in itself is a great thing. So let us all enjoy the ride. be kind and loving to ourselves and also patient with our bodies. They have endured a lot already. Lots if live to everyone. I’m just sharing info in case there are people who aren’t aware of this option. I know some people get very bad GERD after the sleeve that can’t be controlled by medications. I was told the only other option would be to convert to bypass (which is why I ended up choosing RNY). Turns out another option is out there. I’m a nurse practitioner and went to a meeting last week that included dinner and an educational presentation. The presentation was done by both a GI doctor and bariatric surgeon. They were talking about the Lynx procedure. The simplest way I can explain it is to imagine a beaded bracelet that goes around the esophagus. It applies enough pressure to stop the regurg. Complication rates are low. The bariatric surgeon said he has had excellent results for his sleeve patients. He said right now the procedure is still off label for bariatric but the literature on it will be published later this year. Just something to think about or to ask your physician about if you are having GERD issues. If your physician wants more info he can contact a LYNX rep or I can share the name of the surgeon who presented.

What will I NEVER be able to eat?
Kindle replied to Mangolicious's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Actually, anyone that is obese and needs surgery to lose weight has an eating disorder. If we weren't addicted to food, and could make healthy food choices and eat appropriate portions we wouldn't have gotten fat in the first place. You need to seriously ask yourself why you do the things you do that led to your obesity. Do you eat when you're bored? Stressed? Depressed? Happy? Do you crave sugar? Can't stop at just one small plateful? Drink too much? All these things will still be there after surgery. They may go into "remission" while you are honeymooning, but they will reappear after awhile if you haven't addressed them and replaced them with new behaviors and coping mechanisms. If you haven't already, read this...... http://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/357439-bariatric-surgery-only-makes-your-stomach-smaller-otherwise-youre-exactly-the-same/ -

Surgery and PCOS
Panther Girl replied to Panther Girl's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
kc892020, Thank you for the information, it looks like we are having our surgeries a day apart, mine is the 14th. My bariatric team is also the ones treating my PCOS so I am lucky in that respect. I will be happy to get rid of the metformin, I have not seen any real difference with the spironolactone and I do not take progesterone. I was taking Victoza but ins quit paying for it. I also saw that you are from Ohio, I am originally from Ohio too. I hope you have great success, please let me know how it goes and if your PCOS symptoms subside. -
Last summer when I started thinking seriously about bariatric surgery, I had trouble finding info on the timeline for Kaiser patients in the DC/MD/VA area. So for anyone who's interested, here's the process (and my timeline): Got a referral from my primary care provider (9/3/19) 1/2 WLS class with a nutritionist (9/19/19) 1/4 appt with a nutritionist (10/23/19) 1/2 Surgeon-led bariatric info session @ Holy Cross (11/12/19) 2/4 appt with a nutritionist (11/22/19) 2/2 Surgeon-led bariatric info session @ Holy Cross (11/27/19) 2/2 WLS class with a nutritionist (12/20/19) 3/4 appt with a nutritionist (1/16/20) 4/4 appt with a nutritionist (2/12/20) Got approved for surgery (2/14/20) Appt with surgeon @ Holy Cross to schedule surgery (3/3/20) It's designed to be a six-month program starting with your referral and ending with the appt with your surgeon to schedule surgery (with variety of mandatory classes and one-on-one sessions spread out over the course of those six months). Here are some of the other requirements you have to take care of before a board will review your medical record and approve you for surgery: Ideally, you lose some weight, but there aren't a set number of pounds you have to lose. Behavioral health evaluation H-Pylori antibody stool test Sleep apnea screening Write a letter to the surgeon about why you want to have surgery Although my nutritionist is at South Baltimore County Medical Center, the only two bariatric surgeons currently available for Kaiser patients in the DMV are at Holy Cross in Silver Springs. My surgery will likely be at Largo Medical Center, and once it's scheduled, I'll update this post but I've been told to expect a six to eight week wait. I hope this helps!

Help me understand fruit and smoothies
Clementine Sky replied to cseidman's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I began having smoothies about two weeks post op using either a plain yogurt (Greek, Icelandic, or Bulgarian) that is high in Protein and low in carbs or plain kefir as the base. I most often use frozen fruit rather than fresh for the convenience, and my favorites are raspberries (high in fiber), nectarines, and the mixed berries from Trader Joe's. If I'm adding spinach or kale I also use it frozen. Del Monte has a fresh peach cup that is no sugar added, and only has 12 carbs. If I'm going to a regular grocery store vs. Trader Joe's or Ralph's I'll stock up on them for smoothies. Trader Joe's also has frozen sweet potato cubes that are delicious in smoothies, and lower in carbs than some fruit. I make those with Fairlife milk. A bariatric surgeon named Dr. Matthew Wiener has a video on YouTube about the "set point smoothies" he advocates. -

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=WRcaSIMxfYg Forever-ever? I'm all for following the surgeons plan to the "t" but I would have to question what nutrition training/scientific studies have led him/her to conclude that bariatric patients should abstain from fresh fruit and whole grains forever.
