    Cooking for family post-op

I already feel like a short order cook. The 4 yr old hates anything that forces him to use silverware and the 18 month old only has 8 teeth. Lots of separate meals here. Your family will survive. There are lots of ways to have healthy simple meals. Breakfast for dinner is a fast favorite. Yogurt, fruit, eggs, whole wheat toast/pancakes. Fill the freezer with trader joes. You not eating with them is temporary. You said you are married, sounds like something your husband should worry about while you sit on the couch with a protein shake. Don't EVER be ashamed of your body. I am fat and still swim with my kids. Trust me, I have seen A LOT of people naked (RN); we are all a mess. Perfection only exists in airbrushed magazine covers.
  2. I was having the same problem with my water. I took alot longer to add food in because when I tried I got sick so my NUT said to just keep doing the shakes until my stomach was ready so first thing in the morning my husband would bring me a 20oz Yeti full of water ( I use to drink crystal light before my surgery than hated it after but I found diet, decaffeinated lipton cold tea mix) I would drink 5 sips than waited 20 min and i would have 4 oz of a protien shake and 30 min later I would have more water and then 2 hrs later I would have another 4 oz shake and I did this all day long and when I really started counting 5 - 4 oz shakes ( 20 oz ) and 2 20 oz of water than the next day I would add 4-5 more oz of water and add everyday after that. I was on liquids for 4 weeks and then slowly replaced a shake with soup, yogurt, cottage cheese and then week 6 I would add alittle more. I am now 3 months out and I am doing alot better and I now get atleast 4 20oz of water in a day. It will get better I promise.

Am I allowed soft foods yet?

I was cleared for soft foods starting today - at exactly three weeks post op. I was sleeved a day before you on 2/28. I have had no problems eating anything. Unfortunately! LOL I am starting to eat tuna salad, egg salad and scrambled eggs in addition to my protein shakes, and soups. I'm really sick of yogurt right now. Ugh. Trying to figure out what else I should/can eat.

    Consuming too much?

Thanks guys! Great tips to keep in mind. I am heading into week 3 my program is 2 weeks on liquids, 3 rd week full liquids cream soups, protein shakes, 4th week purée type foods /week 5 soft/ week 6 regular. I had yogurt today I could feel the difference slow in going down I felt full quicker and longer which made it difficult to get my water in.It is almost 9pm her in CA and I had completed my 64 Oz if water . [emoji4]happy dance.
  5. I would love to have a carrot right now. I can have light Greek yogurt or cottage cheese. Other than that it's broth, Jell-O, sugar free Popsicle, water, g2 Gatorade, etc. I eat my 1/2 cup of cottage cheese mindfully. Think of me with your next carrot. January 30! Surgery Buddy!?

Hello! As of today I have lost 23 lbs. DOS 240.6, today 217.4. I am having no more pain or other problems. I am able to eat well and have no problem getting in my fluids. My taste for coffee has come back! Yay! (It depressed me when I lost my taste for it right after the surgery!) I am having a bit of trouble eating chicken breast by itself. It seems to get stuck and hurts! But since I love it so much, I have learned to eat it along with soft vegetables, and I no longer have problems swallowing it. For instance, I stir fry it with onions, peppers and fajita spices - or with broccoli and soy sauce! I make sure the veggies are nice and soft. I am not at the raw veggie stage yet and I am REALLY looking forward to eating my salads again!!!!! But for now, I am eating mostly shrimp, fish, chicken breast with soft veggies, eggs and yogurt. I snack on a sugar free Popsicle when I need something in between. And sometimes I get REALLY hungry before bed. Not head hunger. Real hunger. It is tempting to eat a meal, but I grab about 1/2 a slice of deli meat and it takes the edge off and allows me to sleep.

    Seeking NYC Sleeve Buddy

Which nutritionist did you meet with? I met with Shara Lazar. I thought my initial consult was quit rushed and the packet that they gave us was not super informative. I bought that package though so we’ll see how she is when I make my appointments through that. I had no problems going right to purees, thankfully. I have been sticking more to the yogurts and ricotta type stuff though. I did make turkey chili but I puréed it to a thin consistency. HW: 296 SW: 277 CW: 268 GW: 150 Sleeved 3/12/18

    Seeking NYC Sleeve Buddy

@Staceyb2121 &@Missrut718 - what has been your overall experience with NYBG? Dr Holliver seems great but I’m not a fan of the nutritionalist. Also, how did you feel going directly to purée after surgery? It was a bit much for me and I stuck with shakes and yogurt. Adding soup and eggs this week.

    Any March 2018 Sleevers?

Hey there, was that a DEXA scan?? This is something I'm interested in doing as part of establishing my long-term goal. Still on protein shakes, so I don know what works after surgery. But I plan on starting with stuff like cottage cheese, greek yogurt, eggs, mashed beans, tuna salad, chicken salad. My material says to add protein powder to things like applesauce, mashed bananas, etc.
  10. Eventually you'll be able to have snacks--just choose the right things. One of my favorite things is a handful of cashews, for example. Or eat a yogurt (such as Oikos triple zero)--I find that I can take a very long time to finish one of them even now, and back in the early stages I could only eat a half a one at a time. Or maybe a stick of cheese? You'll find things you like that won't seem strange to other people if you choose them instead of something like cake.

    I think I struck gold ...

As canned items they will be super high in sodium though. Are you able to look at the nutrition facts? Don’t forget on purée you can usually eat yogurt, very thin grits, and items puréed in a blender. I have a nutri ninja. Consider buying a nutri ninja blender for prep. You can make smoothies like a champ. I think a few of these will be ok, but after that they will taste like highly processed garbage. I would start now working on learning how to prepare healthy food choices and meals. That’s part of what a healthy lifestyle is about.
  12. It's not realistic thinking you will never have a dessert ever again. I think that sets us up for failure. I have low carb protein bars, plain yogurt with sugar free syrups in every flavor imaginabe, strawberries and blueberries. I found a low carb protein cake single serving at the Low Carb Store in Canada called Smart Cakes in different flavors. If your not prepared you will grab something that is not appropriate.Good luck on your weight loss journey. Sent from my Nexus 5 using BariatricPal mobile app
  13. I am only one week out, but my info says never more than 10g fat or 10g sugar at one time. At 2 weeks I can have smooth food (like yogurt). At 3 week I can add soft veggies and canned fruit(limited). At 8 weeks I can add fresh veggies and nuts. Not sure where meat and cheese go in this schedule? I have post op meeting next week with lots more questions on nutrition.
  14. 48 here, sleeved in late 2013. Had my last period last year so I get the whole menopause thing. BUT.... my personal experience (and all it is is that) is that the more carbs I eat, be they added sugar, bread, pasta... heck even fruit and yogurt... the hungrier I am. And yup, for sweets! New research is showing that we cultivate certain types of bacteria in our gut and when we crave sugar it’s to feed the type of bacteria that crave it. It you starve them out you are much better off! Though trial and error I have found my limits where I can get Fiber and such into my diet (some berries, half an apple, whole grain cereal) and Calcium (Greek yogurt w no sugar... I have parathyroid issues so Calcium is big for me)... without triggering the appetite/cravings. Also yeah exercise is key... and I get the energy thing... but there I will say again, for me personally, if I get out there and push past the “tired” next time I am less tired. Takes about a month consistently (I’ve had to come back after injuries laid me up) for the “let’s go” to outweigh the “tired.” I’m a runner (love saying that cuz I was NEVER an athlete pre op) and I run 25-30 miles most weeks. Some days I want to run, other days I’m dragging but so it anyway. And the draggy fades away after I get into it. So... yeah some docs will do a re-sleeve where they make it tighter. Conversion to bypass is an option with most as well. BUT really all it will do is give you that “honeymoon” window again. Which isn’t to say that’s a bad thing, but it won’t last either. It might give you an opportunity to make changes though. What do you eat now?
  15. Thanks, James, this is really helpful! I have just reached the solid food stage, so will certainly follow your advice. I found that over the past few weeks I have tended to do as you have suggested and relied on soups, shakes, yogurts etc. Having said that, the first bite of real food (an omlette with very soft veggies) was heaven!

    Special treats

I descoverd a perfect treat when you crave ice cream. Buy fat and sugar free yogurt. Plan and un flavored. Pop a cup in the freezer for 10 or 15 minutes. Then add a few drops of liquid water flavor enhancer. Like mio. Give it a try.
  17. I eat lots of cottage cheese, yogurt, almonds, and do protein shakes. I haven’t exercised except running around like a madman at work 😂

    4 week liquid diet...

Protein shakes are best when they are COOOOLD. You really want to stay away from adding any extra calories to those shakes, so yogurt isn't a great idea pre-op. For clear liquid proteins, Isopure Zero Carb RTD are amazing. Again, best served ice cold. You can totally blend them into an thick shake using ice cubes, really ups the experience overall. Also, Protein will cook if it gets too hot, so you can "curdle" it if you try to heat it up too hot.
  19. Maryland here: pre-op was two weeks of lean protein, veges, and 3 fruits/yogurts per day.

    4 week liquid diet...

This may be a dumb question but what. temprature should you drink your shakes at? Should theynbe room temperature, chilled in the refrigerator, over ice or even half-frozen? . Should they be mixed with unsweetened yogurt or flavorings added? Please veterans give me your input or are clear fruit tasting Protein liquids better? 21. But if you freeze it and put it through one of those Yonanas machines or a food processor and then eat it... well how is that different than you chewing it to nothing? It’s not like juice where you actually remove parts (the fiber). You eat the whole fruit when you make these concoctions, don’t you? Trying to figure this out! Just a note—I avoided pretty much all fruit for six months or so and then added in berries (with Greek yogurt) and apples (with peanut butter) sparingly till a year then at goal I started to add back fruits. I never did any of the sugar free popsicles or ice creams till I had been at goal for a while and now I do the halo types on occasion.
  22. Couldn't take my meds either. It was at the point where I would hate yogurt and pudding for the rest of my life if I continued to mix my meds in them. Doctor said it was okay to forgo the gallbladder medicine. I called my shrink to get my usual prescription in an orally dissolvable tablet. My insurance didn't cover it and they wanted $800 for a month's supply. I'm off two meds so far until I can swallow tablets. I've got 2.5 weeks to go. It's insane. I hear you!! Gas X strips were useless on me too! Started taking children's dose of milk of magnesia twice a day and my cramping and bloating finally went away in about two days. Wasn't getting enough water in either. I started drinking out of a 24 oz tumbler with a straw (big no no) and found that I drink my crystal light water like it's Diet Coke. LOL For some reason the tumbler and straw have helped me reached my water goals. I didn't think it would be this difficult. Once I think I have something down, I need to figure something else out. Everything feels so up in the air - Well, I'll try this, and ok, let's see what happens if I do this..nope, gotta try something else. It's such new ground and there's no way for us to predict how our bodies will react to anything right now. It's very frustrating when at the same time we need to follow guidelines from the surgeon.
  23. Tonight's healthy dinner: homemade stovetop chicken souvlaki and homemade tzatziki, served with grape tomatoes. Delicious!

Souvlaki recipe: https://addapinch.com/chicken-souvlaki-recipe/ (I marinated mine overnight.)

Tzatziki recipe (I only made a half batch, but it still made a LOT): https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/20242/tzatziki-sauce/ (I blitzed my cucumber in a blender until it was tiny chunks, then salted it and let it drain in a colander for an hour and a half before mixing up the dip, so that it wouldn't be runny from the cucumber water.)

    1/4 cup chicken = 9g protein

2 tablespoons tzatziki = 2.5g protein (with the yogurt I used, which is Fage 2%)

    Sample meal plans

I remember asking this and no one replying to it here: so i will gladly reply to you!! I am 2.5 months post op with no restrictions and here is a sample day for me: Breakfast- 2 egg whites scrambled with 1/2 slice ham and a sprinkle of cheddar cheese OR 1/2 cup 1% friendship cottage cheese with 3 chunks pineapple Lunch- (usually leftovers) 2 grilled chicken tenderloins and 1/4 cup veggie (this stuffs me). OR canned albacore tuna with a dash olive oil mayo, dill relish, salt and pepper in a little bowl. (Chicken salad would be good too) Snack (I don’t always have)- 1 Greek yogurt or string cheese Dinner- shredded Mexican chicken (in my crock pot or instant pot) a little refried bean and a sprinkle of cheese and salsa (2-3 oz chicken max) This menu and ones like it leaves me 100 percent satisfied and quite full after each meal. Like I said I don’t usually have a snack and if i do it’s because i did an hour long cardio class or I’m purposely breaking a stall (the carbs from the yogurt seem to break my stalls). I don’t dream about food ever and move on after a meal easily. It’s a dream come true. Good luck!

    Question about shakes

I was told the water or skim milk you use in your shake counts but the other ingredients don’t. So I’m you make a 12 oz shake that has yogurt and protein powder and 8 oz of fluid, you would count just the 8 oz. Broths count as liquids as do sugar free popsicles.
