  1. Today I saw my PCP and had my labwork done that my surgeon requested. I also had my EKG. My surgeon also requested a lung capacity test. I wasn't able to do that test today though because I ran out of time so I will go back in a few days. I also have to have an endoscopy so my surgeon can look at my hiatal hernia, and a sleep study. I have to meet with the psychologist in October and see the NUT twice and then I will get my surgery date! I'm excited... can't wait to get it behind me so I can move on... I was embarrassed doing the EKG because I had to get undressed from the waist up.. I'm just so fat that it was embarrassing and uncomfortable because I don't even get undressed in front of my husband unless its dark in the room.. lol.. But the nurse made me feel more at ease by talking about trying to lose weight the whole time.. she doesn't look very big to me but she said she needs to lose 50 lbs. I wish thats all I had to lose. Anyway, I feel like I am making progress a little at a time..and hopefully I will be sleeved before the year is out! :-D

    PCP gone MIA, HELP!

W8loser, Does your insurance company have a Bariatric Program -- are you assigned to a Bariatric Nurse? If so, I agree with the other poster that you should contact notify your nurse. If you are not a part of a Bariatric Program, then I'm not sure that contacting your insurance company would be worthwhile at this point. But you might have a couple of options. Definitely try to establish with another PCP quickly.... but this is easier said than done right? Take a look at your insurance company's medical policy regarding the GS. Most will allow solid documentation from Weight Watchers or Jenny Craig in addition to clinician (MD/DO, ARPN, RD) documentation. For example, United Healthcare will accept Weight Watchers or Jenny Craig documentation in conjunction with documentation of at least two physician visits. So you could use Weight Watchers as an alternative this month if you are unable to see your physician. Hope everything works out for you.
  3. No worries. Your preop diet--and the band--will take care of the weight for you.

    Undecided?!?!

Also, my cousin had the band done a year ago. She just found out that she has gall stones, & has to have her gall blatter removed. Her dr told her that happens with rapid weight lose in alot of people. She's done very well with her weight lose, although she wasn't as big as me, but has had alot of complications.
  5. OMG, I just a ball of mess I am counting the days like I am weighting for xmas day. Or for New Years eve to end. I have a broad with the date and the remaining days left. My granddaughter ask why so I explained that the doctors was going to do something to make me small and she tells me that all I need is to cut the baby out of my belly. I just smile. Before that I broke a plastic chair and my grandson who is six years old jumps out the bed and ask me are you ok do you need me to beat the chair for hurting you. I was laughing so much that I counld not get up for a while. My mind is even playing tricks on me. I am having pain that worry me. I am scared that the date will change again. OOh this waiting game is killing me. Ugh :banghead: :chillpill:

    Insurance Issues ?

Hi, I was told reasons for denial from my insurance company (health net): 1. BMI must be over 40 (if I didn't have any co-morbidities) 2. Under 40 BMI you must have at least two co-morbidities (diabetes, sleep apnea, etc.) 3. I had to go through 6 months of monitored weight loss and lose 10% of my weight (I lost 15lbs) 4. I didn't have to prove any previous weight issues which h was great to hear. Waiting to be approved was the most stressful time for me. I worried everyday that I wouldn't qualify. There are so many different requirements for the insurance companies. I made sure I called my insurance company to confirm the requirements. My doctors office is great...they did all the work, I just needed to show up and follow the rules. I still couldn't help but worry.
  7. Hello im sitting here in the UK reading all your posts about the lap band. with a operation date of 20th February 14. Im getting so confussed about this lap band thing, all the pre op posts on this site are very interesting, informative but for me im getting into a slight pre op tizzy. As the day approaches im self questioning myself, should I be doing this, am I that bad that I need a operation. I like most have been yo yo dieting most of my life so now its time to take hold of this weight issue I think! Whats driving me forward with this is my health. Im fine right now but if i dont change, well what can I look forward to High blood presure, diabetis, joint problems. I think there are more pros than cons with this procedure. Can anyone tell me whats with this "im having bad gas" issue i keep reading about on these blogs. Over here we sometimes call it wind. Is it very common post op does it last long, and can you take medication for it? Pre op diet starts Friday, this is one thing that has stopped me having this op ages ago. Mush food, ect for two weeks not sure i will cope with it.

    My Biggest Fear/worry--

It's a risk that I considered and decided to take. For one thing, there's no foreign body inserted and there's no remnant or blind stomach left behind to worry about. I was willing to be part of a big experiment (and that's what any new treatment for any condition is) to see if the benefit outweighs the drawbacks. I can't donate blood anymore because I can't replenish my Iron stores fast enough and I have to take B-12 for life. There's an increased risk of osteoporosis that I'm willing to take as opposed to obesity and the associated co-morbidities. So far, so good. I have lost all my excess weight and then some and don't find the limitations VSG imposes a burden. I am delighted so far. If something crops up in the future, there is nothing I can do about it now so I feel there's no benefit to worrying about what may or may not happen. I am kind of practical that way and at peace with my decision.
  9. A few weeks ago I was 98% certain I wanted to go ahead and have the sleeve. I have one more appointment and then I can get a surgery date. My insurance covers everything. After some soul searching I decided to start a pre-op diet that would be very similar to how I would have to eat the rest of my life. I gave myself a few guidelines, I wanted to stay under 1000-1200 calories, 60-80 grams of Protein and 64oz of Water. I also wanted to give myself a head start dealing with head hunger vs physical hunger. After the first 3 days everything fell into place. I have no problem hitting protien goals and staying below the 1000 calories. It's still early but at this point it's starting to become second nature. Each day that passes I want the sleeve less and less. Has anyone experienced something like this? I am currently down 9 pounds from this, it's just over a week. (I am sure it's mostly water) I know that most of us have had great success with weight loss in the past but gain it back. After talking with my surgeon he explained that there is a 2 year window where the surgery will cause weight loss, after that it's all you. He has seen numerous patients put the weight back on. Sorry for the rambling but I guess where I am at is this: Is it worth keeping up this lifestyle to lose the weight without surgery, even though it will take longer? Or is surgery the answer since you can't go back? After reading some posts where people will lose 3-4 pounds a month, I keep thinking that I can do that without surgery. Now I am not sure that the risks of surgery is worth it. Everyone I work with thinks I am nuts for having second thoughts. I would love to hear what other people have to say about this.
  10. Hello! Just joined today after getting frustrated with not finding the answers I needed off the internet. I started the Lap-Band process 5 months ago. My insurance requires me to complete a 6 month diet plan with my doctor before surgery. I just completed my fifth month on Friday! As the surgery is getting closer, I have so many questions. I'm trying to plan how much time I will need to take off work. I asked my doctor and he said that I could have the surgery on a Friday and go back that Monday. But the more I read on the internet I'm seeing that people take anywhere from 2-6 weeks! The doctor said because I'm young and don't have any other medical concerns (besides my weight, of course) I should have a speedy recovery. My work requires me to request the time off in advance. Any suggestions?

    Insurance Issues ?

Is why I am so nervous. They told me to lose weight ... My bmi will go down ???? Is that ok ?!
  12. YAY!!! I finally figured out how to start a new thread thanks to Amy C and 2muchfun My lapband surgery is scheduled for 1/21/14. I was hoping to hear from others who have paved the way before me to see if you have any advice for preventing or reducing the amount of sagging skin that often happens with rapid weight loss. I'm a planner and its never too early to start thinking ahead to my future weight loss that WILL happen with a little help from the band. (P.S. another user named her band - any suggestions for me as I plan to name my band too!! hehehe)
  13. I am 24 years old and have struggled with my weight since I was in the 2nd grade. I was raised on happy meals and diet soda. I struggled with an eating disorder in high school because I felt 'fat' next to my friends. I weighed a healthy 150 at 5'6. I now think back and wish I never even started my unhealthy eating habits. At my highest weight, 257 lbs, I decided to look at the Gastric Sleeve surgery. A friend of mine did it and had amazing results. On Wednesday, I will be having my surgery. The past several days on my pre-op diet have been extremely tough. I'm used to eating what I want and when I want it. Unfortunately, my fiancé eats what he wants, usually fast food. He wants to be supportive but is having a hard time changing his eating habits. I have lost 11 lbs since Friday morning (9/28) and I am extremely happy with my decision to have the surgery. I know the journey is just beginning but I am definitely ready for a healthy new start!

    Only At 194

Well, maybe the surgery will help you. I've heard of many co-morbities get fixed after the surgery . As far as exercising, I really haven't exercised since my surgery 2 years ago and still lost 150+ lbs. . . but it has stopped now. . so for my new years resolution i will be returning to the gym to help kick start the weight loss again . . . if you could do it yourself, it would have worked already right? Good luck to you and have a Merry Christmas and a blessed new year!
  16. Hi, I think most of did the last supper thing and gained a few pounds before pre-op diet if they had to do one. I remember making a list of all the things I wanted to eat before surgery thinking I will never be able to eat them again. Well now that I know better I will be able to have most of the stuff that was on my list, but just a small amount of it.

  18. Hi Sharon, I am still learning this banding/diet process as I go along, but since you and I were banded only 8 days apart, I thought I would throw my two cents in for what it's worth............ 1) I think exercise is really key, and unfortunately there is just no way around that. The good news is that once your workouts become habit, you will probably start to enjoy them. I know that this has happened to me, and for the first time in my life I actually enjoy and look forward to my workouts. 2) Portion control. I have learned from others on this board to portion out my food on the plate and once I have eaten that portion to stop eating, even if I am still hungry. I do occasionally have slip ups and eat more than I had planned to, but most days I manage to do this. 3) No eating or snacking after dinner. This has always worked well for me -- even before I was banded. The band makes it so much easier for me to do this now. 4) My current diet consists mostly of Protein, fruits and vegetables. I try to limit my intake of bread, Pasta and starchy vegetables as much as possible, but have not eliminated them completely from my diet. As I said, I am still learning this as I go along, but this is what is working for me at this point in time. Good luck and congrats on your weight loss so far! Nervous

No, I don't think they will. The 3 or 6 month diet required does not affect your eligibility. They will always go by the weight you recorded at your first visit. However, they do want to see that you are committed to a healthier lifestyle and to weight loss. I would really try not to gain a lot of weight during your supervised diet.

    3 week Stall?

Ok...25 lbs in 3 weeks!!!! That is a crap load of weight!!! Of course you have stalled - your body is adjusting to all the changes. Keep doing what you're doing!
  21. Wow! 29 days and counting!!! But, on another note, I became a little piggie this weekend and ate WAY too much!!!! I'm up 3.5 lbs!!! I am so disgusted with myself!! I'm still below where they want me to be, but, that's besides the point. I was doing so well for over 2 months and then some evil gremlin took over my brain and I didn't even think about what I was eating!!!! Nor did I write it down!!! I got up last night to go to work and had a talk with myself. I said, "self, you need to get your act together and stop this nonsense!!" So I'm back on the straight and narrow from here on out!!! Scared to hear what the dietitian is going to say when I see her here in a couple of hours!!! OK...got that off my chest. Thanks for listening to my whining!! Have a great day everyone and a blessed holiday season!!!

    Starving

So the point is you are going to lose weight with this diet and you will shrink your liver. You really need to stay strong and stick to it, the surgeon can cancel the surgery if he feels you didnt stick to the guidelines. Its for your safety anyways, to make sure your liver doesnt get damaged by being in the way! I wish you luck. Wait how long is your preop diet for??

    Pre-Op in college

My doctor required a protein shake at breakfast and lunch and for dinner a palm sized meal, half lean protein and half veggies plus 64 oz water. That was it. Lost 19 pounds in two weeks but I started at a really high weight. I teach at a university and about all I cam get in the cafeteria is grilled chicken. Occasionally lean beef tips or grilled shrimp. I can take my lunch of course. Good luck.
  24. Hi everybody! First post on these forums, but I have been reading them for weeks in preparation for gastric sleeve surgery. I have just finished all of the pre-op requirements for my surgery team and had my last appointment with them. They are sending in my information to my insurance today for approval! Reading through these forums has been super helpful the last few weeks to make me feel more confident in this decision and has given me information I didn't even think to ask about, but I have a few questions with my surgery date potentially about to be set (the team is confident if/when insurance approves, we can get my surgery in early-mid January! 😊) : 1) For those that have BCBS insurance, how long did it take for them to approve your surgery? I realize it is Christmas week this week, so it may take them a little longer, but don't want to stress myself out thinking I did something wrong if it takes a while, so I'd like to have an estimate of how long this normally takes. 2) For those that have done a gastric sleeve, how long was it before you could lift weights again? I know they are going to want me to walk/cardio ~5 days a week pretty quick after surgery, which I already do, but I actually really enjoy lifting 2-4 times a week depending on the week, so I am curious when you were able to get back to lifting weights or start lifting after you had the surgery? 3) This one is a little more out there, but has anyone that has had this surgery (or others) been allergic to the anesthesia medicine? That is my biggest worry as I have had no previous surgeries before, but am allergic to or have mild-moderate reactions to a lot of medicine and I never know until I take it (Allegra, Aleve, both weight loss meds they tried me on before agreeing I could look at surgery to name a few of the worst ones...) My theory is the hospital would be the best place to have an allergic reaction, and my surgeon team knows of my other allergies and will be able to fix it if something does happen, but I was curious if anyone else had had this worry and gotten through surgery just fine? Just some nerves because med reactions are never fun. 😕 Thanks in advance for any help!

    Anyone post-op with GERD?

I actually lived with pre-op GERD (silent reflux) mis-diagnosed as asthma for 10 years prior to surgery. Mine presents as chronic coughing rather than heartburn and is worse at night. They started me on Omeprazole right after my EGD and it made a big difference. For the first month post-op, it was worse. Bad enough that I had to raise the head of my bed with a couple of 6" lifts and double my Omeprazole to twice per day. However, once my stomach healed and the weight began to come off things got MUCH better. I was able to flatten my bed again and now, at 9 months out, only have a single night time does of Omeprazole. I'm hoping to be off of it all together in time.
