Normally, our protein goals should not change markedly between when we are losing and when we are maintaining weight, as the goal in each case is to maintain our lean body (or muscle) mass, which (hopefully) won't change much as we lose the fat (there will inevitably be some loss, but we should try to minimize that with the typical protein recommendations and some strength oriented exercise.) Once reaching goal weight, then one can evaluate their body composition (fat and lean mass amounts) and make adjustments accordingly, or if one wants to go into a muscle building program, then an increase may be in order.

My weight loss shows in my face but nowhere else yet be patient it will fall off before you know it! ~RNY 1.19.15 -
Hello, I have been over 100 pounds overweight for most of my life. I am just beginning the process and want to learn from others who have been banded. I was turned down by GH Coop 3 times because my BMI was 39 and my comorbidities were not severe enough. So am now going private pay and have found St. Francis Hospital Center for weight loss and they understand that I need help and if I pass all my labs, phych and physical tests will be happy to help me. Can anyone tell me what kind of questions will be asked at the phych evaluation? pkw

Questions on Ever Eating Normal
Jachut replied to Linda3912's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
SpringerLink - Journal Article With regard to the well rounded balanced diet, I found this interesting link - its only a study summary, not the whole report but its an Australian study showing that lap banding tends to result in mainly fat loss (and not lean tissue mass) at a 4:1 ratio. That's VERY good news. Now bear in mind this is an Australian study - and I note Prof. Paul O'Brien is involved - and here in Australia the general recommendation is to eat from the five food groups, we dont really do a Protein focus (and Protein shakes are not seen as a "normal everyday food"), although protein is of course acknowledged as one of the important macronutrients. So its is VERY interesting that we still seem to enjoy FAT loss and not a lot of fat free mass loss! Balanced diets are a good thing! -
what was your miserable phase?

Congrats on your loss so far! That's a great, steady rate. I look forward to my turn. Currently 3 weeks post op and so far lost 12 on preop liquid diet and 18 postop. I am running a bit slow but then I am only now starting to get all my protein in. Water is the hardest to drink I can't understand it! Slowly adjusting... A great amount of weight loss so far!Great! -
I am starting to feel very discouraged because of how slowly I'm losing weight. It's been 11.5 weeks since my surgery and I'm down 34 lbs. I've seen some people lose that amount in the first month. Granted, I'm not getting enough water and I'm not exercising as regularly as I should, but I would expect the lack of calories alone would result in faster weight loss. I'm worried about my 3 month post-op appointment on the 28th. I'm afraid my surgeon will be unhappy with my progress. I am already so down on myself about it, I can't handle hearing from someone else that it's not enough. ????

Deciding I want the band & ???'s
Vicki J replied to SDKellyGrl's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Kaiser does do the lap band. I will be attending my orientation tomorrow. From what I was told, the process takes 3 to 6 months start to finish. I'm really excited about getting the band because I'm too am tired of fighting the battle. I'll start my pre-op meal plan on Wednesday. So the weight loss starts then. Hopefully, it won't be too long until I get the band. -

Big as Life Congrates on your 32 lbs - I'm 52 and we have the same bmi - how tall are you?? i'm short 5'3. It's very encouraging to see someone in our age bracket doing so well.. I am pre-bander - jumping through all the hoops (test) etc right now - should have my date shortly.. Sometimes i get discouraged when I don't seem that women in our age bracket are lossing very much or should i say very slowly - I KNOW that this is a 2 yr process but we still all have that I WANT IT NOW mentallity. sdkellygirl - Welcome - this is the greatest place for info..... -

I have heard that the weight loss can really affect relationships with your spouse/boyfriend/girlfriend .....even studies that have shown the divorce rate skyrockets. Have any of you experienced this??? I have a feeling as much as my hubby says he supports me he is also very comfortable with me beinhg heavy and may feel threatened when I start losing weight. -
Hello: I am considering lapband surgery and wanted to get feedback from ppl who have had this surgery. How has it been? Any complications? Weight loss, etc etc. Thanks, Karen Ross:smile2:

Thanks for your replies . I called a different center of excellence this afternoon. The surgeon this morning was really discouraging. He told me my weight loss potential was only 100 lbs smh when I know 50-60% isn't 100lbs... Maybe he was thinking of the lap band .

Skinipete - You hit the nail on the head with keeping busy, specifically - your hands busy! I crochet in the evenings while my husband watches TV (then I don't mind the flipping of the channels back and forth). Or I get on this forum to check the latest postings to keep me in tune with what I need to do. We hike at a nearby reserve any chance we get, and don't buy snacky type foods that aren't nutritional or low-cal (I can usually stay away from those, but at least it's a better choice than high cal junk). Reading books also helps, go to a movie, anything to get your mind off of food. Find a walking buddy, join a gym or the local "Y". Many have challenges and trainers that can customize a workout routine for you. In other words, get your mind and your hands away from food. Easy to say, hard to do. But you have to be willing to change your habits. You've already gone thru the surgery, now get your mindset tuned in. Support sessions can help get you motivated and perhaps get a weight loss buddy from the group that can help you through. Don't mean to be "preachy" either, just trying to give you something to consider. Good luck and don't give up. We're all in the same boat! -
Only a total jerk of a doctor would be upset about an 85 pound weight loss! Congrats on that, Rootman! I'm glad your doc is so supportive.

more than a 3 week stall? anyone?? please HELP
janep replied to okalani's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had surgery a week after you and am having the same experience. I have been stalled for the past week and am actually up a pound. I also have about a 30 pound loss total (including pre-op). I'm trying to be patient because with the small amount of food I am eating it seems like eventually the scale has to start moving again. -
Insulin taking diabetics & slow weight loss
dt06houston replied to dt06houston's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Thanks for all the input. I too have dropped the insulin dosage and would really like to drop it to maybe one shot a day and eventually take a oral medication. :nervous One day at a time though. I just know that insulin is a hormone. It causes us naturally to gain weight so with the band and taking insulin, it seems to slow the weight loss...to me that is. I am doing the protein, water, etc. Eating the right foods...etc. It's one of the "things that make you go ...hmmm".....:speechles -
What Causes Stalls Usually?
RickM replied to Kiki Von Moonshine's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
http://www.dsfacts.c...or-plateau.html This is the best explanation that I have found. We typically stall or at least slow down, 2-3 weeks after the start of a major weight loss effort because that is when the body shifts from burning its short term energy stores of glycogen (basically carbs,) and starts burning its long term stores of fat. Glycogen burns relatively quickly at a rate of around 2000 caloried per pound, while fat burns more slowly, at a rate of around 3500 calories per pound, so we lose slower once we start burning the fat. As noted in the article, as we start to rebuild our glycogen stores, we have to retain some Water to keep it in solution, and this can be compounded by the matter that our bodies typically don't want to dig into their fat reserves (it has to be convinced that you are really serious about this starvation thing!) -
Looking for December 2014 sleeve support/friends...
path2healthy replied to CJSLEEVE's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hey there! I had my surgery on Dec 8th, 2014. I am sorry to hear you are surrounded by people you may feel are judgemental about such a thing. I was worried before my surgery about this but thankfully I had a friend that had it a year ago (part of reason I finally decided to do it) and I have picked her ear to death about everything! I have had good luck with letting others know about my surgery. Certainly I don't start conversations with it, but when people found out I had surgery I didn't hid what I did, and others who have asked how I have started loosing I have also not hid it. At first I felt like I had to give a 30 minute speech about having tried every kind of diet and excercise and why I finally decided on this surgery, but found it wasn't always necessary. I also found that almost everyone has a relative or close friend who has had the sleeve or another surgery done for weight loss. It is becoming more known and accepted. I was worried I would be judged by people who may think all I ate was butter and bon bons all day (not my diet at all but thought people would think that was how I ate) and had no willpower so I had to have surgery as a cop out instead of doing actual diet and exercise. Thankfully that is not the response I was getting from others and they have understood there is a real struggle for many, possibly a hereditary condition, and that this often is our only option for getting truly healthy. I am not looking to be a super model nor do I have a set weight that I have to be. I justwant to be healthy and happy. I hope you can find some great friends and support on here but also hope that you can find someone in your inner circle of friends who can support and be with you too, because it is rewarding! Good luck, you have made a good decision and we can all be there to help eachother through this time! -
Blood sugar after surgery
LuluVSG2015 replied to LuluVSG2015's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I struggled with that as well. I was told rny would reverse the diabetes in hours (in most cases) and that I could reverse it with the sleeve but it would take a while and come through weight loss. I decided I was ok with it taking a little while, as the rny just scares me too much! -
Hi all, I am planning (hoping) to get surgery in February of next year. My current health insurance specifically excludes WLS, but I am switching plans in January and the new plan MIGHT cover the surgery (BCBSM). I started meeting with a nutritionist in August in hopes that if my new plan covers it and requires 6 months of medically managed weight loss, I would be able to use these meetings for that prerequisite. I met with the patient coordinator on Friday last week and told her that I want the surgery whether insurance covers it or not. I have been thinking about this for over 6 years and I have saved up, so I can do it. I asked her about complications and how much is included in the initial payment (one surgery center I spoke with covers up to 30 days post surgery with some type of 'bliss insurance' or something like that). She told me that they will cover up to $50k if there are complications and then 50% of any charges after that. She was very negative about me doing the surgery out of pocket. She basically said that I could put myself in financial ruin if I do it and that I need to think about my family and what could happen if there are complications. Does anyone have personal experience with this? Are there any ways to mitigate the risks of complication-related out of pocket cost? What really got me though was that she said that she has had patients who had insurance-covered WLS who are now on insurance that doesn't cover WLS come back with surgical related issues (blockages, internal hernias) and since their new insurance doesn't cover WLS, they are denied coverage for these issues. Has anyone experienced this? I am thinking that with the new health insurance policies that no longer allow denial for pre-existing conditions, this wouldn't happen, but now I'm really scared. I am definitely a candidate for surgery. 38 years old, 5'3", 275lbs I left there feeling like I was putting my whole financial future in jeopardy if I self-pay.

Need encouragement - slow weight loss, hungry all the time.
Vanlando replied to Vanlando's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I worried that I pushed myself too hard. I WANTED soft foods by the end of the week - held out until the end of week two, but my surgeon didn't recommend them until week 4. While I wish I had better willpower, I'd of never made it this far. I started doing my own research and found that some were doing soft foods earlier. Now, I've wondered if reintroducing the soft food too early is what's causing the slow loss. I get a good bit of liquid - non caffeinated/non-carbonated - but it's not all water. I've definitely replaced my 2-3 sugar free energy drinks/sodas with hot tea and juices and increased water over all. I'm retaining a good bit of water as well. Thanks again - I'm glad to know there are others. -

I ache for you and your loss and Celebrate your strength and resolution. I know you know that your mother resides within you... she is never away from you... and I wonder if you might feel her closer when you hear the words of encouragement and support she would have said aloud were she here, and now must say silently through your heart. Wishing you, dear one, the gentle coming of peace. -
My BMI is right at 40. I do not have co morbidies. The Dr. put a checkmark in the box that says something along the lines of "patient frequently struggles with handling stress." I've been in a lot over the last 8 years, for anti-depressants. sigh. Will this count against me afa wether or not they think I can handle the stress after surgery or whatever? I am so scared I'll do 6 mos and they'll pick the tiniest little thing to count against me and I'll get a denial letter. also- the ins co sent me a list of criteria I have to meet. It says "bcbsm has a 6 month consecutive weight-loss program requirement." I asked my dr' what exactly they want from me. do i have to write it all out every day- every bite I take? do I have to follow a certain plan? he said call the ins company and ask. i left the office and did just that, and they said "ask your dr." *HEADAGAINSTWALL she says something like "we dont preauthorize this procedure, it's all up to your surgeon. huh? I don't even meet w/ him until next month on the 25th. will they take this months weigh in? I'm kindof spinning in circles. can't wait until this hoop part is all over. am i making this harder than it needs to be? I also asked hte ins lady if losing a big amt of weigt during the next 6 months would disqualify me. she didn't think it would. said that was also up to my surgeon. do you guys know? cuz I can lose like crazy, it's the keeping it off part that is hard, of course. I hate this grownup stuff. I'm 28, but I still let my hubby handle all the adult things.

Hi, I also had surgery the same day. I just found this message board 2 days ago. My insurance company required 3-4 months pre-op with no specific weight loss required. I started off at 341 lbs and was 328 on the say of surgery. I am on clear liquids and 3 Protein shakes a day until next week. Then I go down to 2 Protein Shakes and soft foods for 1 meal for another 2 weeks. My recovery has been pretty unremarkable which I am surprised and grateful for. My biggest issue right now is gas pains that happen at night. Luckily gas-x helps with that.
