Get ready to rumble!
Lazy_Lizzy replied to ShelbyLynne710's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Also on another note I thank you for this a little TMI .I'm barely starting my journey and this is the stuff that will make it all that easier to know what to expect and not be worried when it happens. This is what this place was created for and I thank the creators deeply as I have gotten so much from here from insurance questions to what to expect before during and after. Thanks one again and that's for the reply as well. Much luck to you both!!! -
(I apologise in advance. This is going to be long and maybe a little graphic). Good question! I was moving from Japan back to Canada and with the stress of that the cramps and bowel movements became more pronounced. In particular, the stool was really different. It became very loose to pure liquid. Every colour of the rainbow came out, even a kind of translucent stool which I guess was solidified mucous. Even then I didn't think of going to the doctor until blood started appearing, which freaked me out. Unfortunately I had a trip planned to Vietnam before returning home, and I couldn't handle waiting for 3 weeks so I went to an international clinic there and they did a bunch of tests and told me they thought it was Crohn's or UC (and not cancer, which of course was my first assumption). They gave me meds and anti-inflammatories to deal with until I got back to Canada and could get tested properly. After my first colonoscopy I was told it was Crohn's-Colitis, but having seen a much better surgeon here in Japan he told me it was UC. He gave me the meds that I'm currently on (Pentasa, in both pill and enema form) and I've been happy with that. Unfortunately I have never lived in the same city as him, so going to see him regularly was a problem in the past, and now nearly impossible because of where I live now. I have yet to find a good gastroenterologist to replace him. So, instead of taking meds regularly, I take them when I have a flare-up, since I'm almost out. The problem with being obese is that a lot of doctors don't believe you could have a disease that often leaves people at the very low end of the BMI scale. One doctor in Japan told me I had diarrhea and to eat more fibre, without doing a single test to prove himself right and me wrong! This was when I was in a really bad flare-up and basically had blood and mucous pouring out of my a$$ many times a day (I know, TMI, but that's often the case with this disease). Similarly, the doctors in Canada were very reluctant to believe I had this condition until the tests came back from the colonoscopy (in fact, I remember seeing the infected areas as I was very awake (i.e. high on meds) during the entire procedure). I almost said "told you so" to the gastroenterologist when he told me I had Crohn's Colitis. He was clearly shocked at the diagnosis. I was very happy when I found my gastroenterologist here in Japan (he is not Japanese BTW) who took me seriously from the start and moved his schedule around so he could a colonoscopy the next day because he was so worried about my condition. Anyway, I have since found research articles that indicate up to 30% of people with Crohn's or UC are obese, which they can't explain. The problem with abdominal cramping and loose stools is that there are a lot of conditions that have similar symptoms, like lactose intolerance and celiac disease. I did go gluten-free for a month once (it was hard to maintain, mostly because I liked my beer in the summer months) and that helped tremendously with the symptoms (i.e. they disappeared). So clearly, even though I don't have celiac disease I have some level of gluten intolerance which causes flare-ups. Similarly, while most dairy I eat now is cheese or yogurt, when I add other things like normal milk or ice cream I get a lot of cramps so some lactose intolerance appears to be there too. But other things, like fibre (whole grains, gassy veggies, lettuce, fruit or vegetable peels, nuts, oatmeal, barley) are really problematic for me, as is alcohol (I'm off it now because I just can't deal with it). So...(sorry, this is really long!) UC symptoms include severe abdominal cramping - most of mine was in the 'corners' of the large intestine. Cramping could be caused by food or stress (sometimes delayed). Often a person has to go (#2) multiple times a day - this doesn't necessarily mean something will come out, but your rectum will be in full cramping mode, regardless of what's in your body. For me, once food or Water hits my stomach it will trigger a response in the lower GI tract, even though I know it's impossible for it to move that fast. That said, when symptomatic, food would pass through my system so fast I couldn't take any pills - birth control, Tylenol, whatever, would be sitting at the bottom of the toilet bowl an hour or two after I took it. The only time I've ever seriously lost weight is when I've been symptomatic with UC. One of the posters in the doctors office referred to "rectal urgency" which I thought was a great phrase to describe the feeling of needing to go "right now" - 30 sec or less, because you didn't know how long to hold back the cramping. I've had some accidents. The whole "never trust a fart" after weight loss surgery is true for Crohn's and UC patients as well. Sometimes the cramping is in my large intestine, sometimes the rectum. And sometimes it feels like I'm sh*tting fire acid out of my butt - like the digestive juices or something. It's very painful. If you look at the infographic here, I think a lot of UC patients have the bottom 3 types of loose stool (from loose and feathery to pure liquid). Blood and mucous are also usually part of the deal too. Even though it's always the lower bowels that are affected, I have found that antacids like Gaviscon, Tums, Pepto Bismol help reduce symptoms. I don't know why. Sometimes eating helps stop the cramping as well, which seems counterintuitive, but at least for me it would work. Okay, I gotta stop.

Post-op hospital stay
rensterness replied to KBlood's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My hospital stay was three night and four days. Everyone has a different view on their hospital stay, mine wasn't the greatest or the worst. I brought my own protein shake which they fridgerated for me, and my friend brought me Broth from the Chinese place :-). They pushed the sipping and walking which was needed, but annoying lol. My pain was controlled with pain meds which I felt controlled them and made me more comfortable. This may be a TMI advice but I believe in being honest...if you feel like you have to pass gas, it may be a smart idea to sit on the toilet. I don't think much more needs to be said. Lol. I found out after surgery when it was to late about that. It seems more common then not, just not something that is brought up on the forums. Lol. I am now 5 months post op from the sleeve and lost over 100 pounds since surgery date. Wishing you nothing but the best! Keep is posted :-) -
Hi! So I was banded on 1/5 - I have the Realize band, but truthfully I think that they all work the same way, right? So anyway - let me just preface by apologizing in advance as some of this may be TMI, but here goes. I have been having a huge issue with constipation up until TH when it seemed that overnight my BM changed - they were much softer. On Friday (like 2am) it hit me like a ton of bricks. Everything seems to be going straight through me. Yesterday I was having trouble drinlking Water because everything just tasted off. I did managed to make two Protein shakes and consume those, but that is it. Today the runs continue - like water. I don't really feel "sick" today, but I am still having issues. I ate oatmeal with double protein milk this morning to get some substance and again - about 20 minutes later I was back in the bathroom. Has anyone esle experieinced anything like this? I just started soft foods on TH evening, but I was feeling like this (not to the full extent) TH morning. Any insight or tips are greatly appreciated! Angela

Hello friends! I am 5 days post op from my vsg surgery and for the most part I'm feeling pretty good. I'm rarely hungry and do my best to get fluids in through sugar free drinks, popsicles and broths. But I've been struggling with gas pains. It happens throughout the day and the only way to relieve is it to try and burp. I was wondering how long this will last? Every day has gotten better but it's still getting to be annoying and uncomfortable. Accompanying the gas pain, I have a brief minute-long moment where the air gets stuck and I feel extremely nauseous. My mouth fills with saliva as if I'm going to throw up and then never actually do. This has happened once every morning and I'm wondering if this has happened to any of you and if so how long until it went away? Sorry if this message is a little tmi btw... and thank you to those who are taking the time to read and possibly respond [emoji18]

Gross Bathroom Question
LisaMergs replied to birdiestofbirds's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi! From experience I can tell you that you should be taking pericolace or Miralax. Long before the Opiod Induced Constipation commercials that recently came out, I was a huge sufferer! I'm talking worse than you could possibly imagine. For me at that time it was caused by the pain meds I took for my rheumatoid arthritis. Now that I'm preparing for my RNY my nurse went over the do's and don't -s with me and those two are on the top of her list to use. I believe you need to stay away from a few like Metamucil or some such because they are gelatinous and can plug your stoma. Neither of these will affect your body's ability to go down the road. Believe me- you don't want to deal with the horrid fissures that can occur from chronic constipation. Those do not go away and the best way to describe it is to consider passing razor blades daily. Sorry if it was tmi but really- help yourself now before it is too late! -
Tried of not being able to go!
hmills653 replied to 50Startingover's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was there, on the toilet in pain googling what to do. So here was what helped me.... milk of mag, an over the counter enema, and if it’s there but can’t come out...TMI... a warm washcloth held to the rectal area can help relax the muscles. -
I know it's soo easy to get up, after all we did cut out a portion of our stomach. Have faith we all stall. That's the body way of handling all that's going on. As long as your eating and drinking what you are required to eat and drink then you are fine. That extra pound could be water or TMI poop lol. You are doing great!

Stomach rolling and diarrhea (TMI I know)
Iowa_summergirl posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was sleeved on Oct 14, and have had a relatively routine course. I could feel when I was getting full and if I drank too much at one time, I could feel that little bubble when things finally went through to the pouch. Today however, my stomach and bowels are absolutely rolling. I can hear all of my bowel sounds out loud and they are constant. I have been in the bathroom many many times and most of the time it is pure liquid. I feel like all the Water that I put in me is coming out 15 minutes later. My stomach isn't tender. I feel ok, just tired (but I didn't sleep much last night). Thoughts? Just a weird day? Should I be worried? That nasty complication "leak" just comes to mind... -
I had a horrible stuck episode tonight before bed. I've gotten stuck before, on a small scale and it always passes quickly. But not tonight. I was stuck for about 20-25 minutes and I thought I was going to die!! Thankfully I did not vomit (TMI?) but there was lots of sliming. So tomorrow what should I do? Should I stick to liquids for a day it is that not necessary? I've never had such a bad episode and I don't want to anger an already irritated band! Thanks for your help!

I am allowed more calories I just can't seem to get them in. I can have as many protein shakes as I want, but I am getting sick of chicken and turkey already and stomach tuna without mayo and relish. I'll have some egg beaters today and try to up my protein shakes. Unfortunately, now diarrhea too (sorry, TMI).

? about getting the stomach flu
Sojourner replied to dolphintattoo's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
As per my surgeon, if you have a stomach virus, and you are going to vomit, there is really no way to stop it from happening. In my experience, anti-nausea medications will not stay down if you have a stomach virus. I did come down with such a virus after being exposed to my son and caring for my 2 young grandsons last Fall. I vomited several times (tmi), and the following day went in for a partial unfill. I stayed with a liquid diet for several days and had no residual ill effects from the episode. It is best to avoid vomiting if you are able, but sometimes it is not possible. Lower your chances of contracting the virus by washing your hands often and keeping them away from your face. -
I've heard a lot of people talk about how after surgery they were deathly nauseous because of the "anesthesia". I've had at least 4 other surgeries before my vsg which is coming up quick (9/8/14) and have never experienced nausea from going under. So my question is, is the nausea actually caused by the anesthesia or the pain medication that is administered?..That one I can believe as I was nauseous and throwing up the whole labor and birth of my daughter (TMI) after they gave me my epidural.

I am 6 weeks post op VSG. A sinus infection is causing post nasal drip which causes nausea. I'm on regular foods, but have been vomiting after each meal, no matter how slowly and well I chew, since I've had this sinus drainage. Figuring my new little tummy simply doesn't have room. TMI but too much phlegm is what's making me vomit. Have been doing lots of Water and back to some Protein shakes to at least get some protein. Any other suggestions?

If my day is really busy I will eat lunch at my desk and continue to work. This was the case today. My lunch was meat & cheese rolled up and baby carrots, had this many times. So I’m eating and working….about half way into lunch I get the soft stop feeling. Okay, I stop. I then get the heavy chest feeling, something is trying to go down. This feeling stayed with me most of the afternoon. At 4pm I made myself a cup of hot tea, black tea with cream & splenda (It’s the English in me). I’m sipping my tea and I get the soft stop feeling….hummm, never got that with liquids before. I wait a few minutes and take another sip, get the soft stop feeling again. This time it’s followed up with saliva building in my mouth. TO THE BATHROOM I GO! Yep, I pb’d that tea right up along with carrots (sorry if TMI). Well, I guess I got stuck at lunch and finally got it out 4 hours later….. My Yellow Rose (my band) started talking to me after that & this is what she said, “See what happens when you don’t chew your food enough. See what happens when you don’t pay attention to what you are eating. See what happens when you eat too fast.” Wow, wasn’t expecting that. But, hay it happens. Sorry Yellow Rose, guess I won’t be eating that Mahi Mahi I planned for dinner. .. “Nope, I want liquids. I’ll teach you not to chew your food!” So, I am having a protein shake for dinner.

I used the restroom and everything came out fine (tmi, but it smelt a little off, and a tip: wipingyour cookie back to front was much more comfortable then the front to back. I also used a wipie). I lyedown in bed on my comfy pillow-one of those bed rest pillows that have the arm rests and high back) and watched TV. I feel great! I'm taking small sips of water, as I took a semi medium swig and it made me gag. Now I'm just chilling watching TV and have a back massager(which I highly reccoment getting from Target or Walmart for about $6!) life is good, I feel great, and I am walking around my house every now and then.

Fine, hubby and me did it last night! There, I said it. Not by choice either, but he can't resist me in a thong (don't lose your lunch.) TMI, TMI, TMI!

I had my surgery on the 13th of June and am just now starting to get my feet back under me. Coming out of surgery was horrible.. ..like a nightmare actually. The pain was intense and not even my pain meds were enough to keep it at bay. That gas they pump you up with is no joke. I spent my first day in the hospital in immense pain and pretty drugged up. I finally got it under control (had terrible spasms and some dizziness from not being able to sleep that have since gone away) but I'm still tired--12 days out--even getting in over 100 ounces of Protein and my required 64 ounces of Water. Hopefully that gets better as I move on to the soft foods phase, which is set to happen on the 28th. The bathroom has also been interesting...and painful. I can't swallow pills so all of my meds needed to be liquid. The stool softener they gave me was in pill form so I didn't take it and talk about a mistake. At my post op checkup, my doctor switched me to a powdered Miralax and I went from nothing happening to can't get to the bathroom fast enough in about two days. TMI, I know, but I'm sure someone else out there might have the same issue, lol. I've managed to drop 7 pounds in 12 days which I'm excited about and I'm not hungry or feeling deprived. I am getting tired of Protein shakes... Those are getting old and chocolate is fast becoming my worst enemy. Anyway, I just wanted to check in here since I can officially count myself as part of the sleeved crowd.

Pre-op Liquid Diet - Anyone have this?
Frodo's Mom posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
First, let me say this is very hard to type, but I am glad I have this forum to come and ask questions like this. I'm sorry if this is TMI (too much information), but that is a warning right there to stop reading if you are squeamish. I have severe diarrhea with the Pre-Op diet. I'm losing a ton of weight and staying hydrated as best I can but it is really taking a toll, I'm so tired of it. Did anyone else experience this with your liquid diet? I read in the Post-op diets a lot of people having this issue, but just wondered if anyone experiencing it just from the Protein shakes. I have tried lactose free, lactose pills, all vegan plant based protein, nothing is helping. Thanks for your help and advice -
The only issues I had with my periods before were that they were never on time or sometimes would not come at all and were pretty heavy. The heaviness I'm talking about my latest period is no where near what I had before...when it started it came with no warning and I had to change clothes and stand in the shower for about 30 mins because it was pouring out! Sorry for the TMI but no other way to explain it. I hope we don't all have these issues long term...I thought that surgery would have helped in the pcos department! :/

Are Any Of You Post Ops Colder? Especially In This Weather From Hell?!
hellonurse replied to Kiki Von Moonshine's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Yes, yes. That is me now. Before I was always sweaty and hot. Now Im always cold. Well except when I'm working out!! This might be TMI, but I have also noticed I am not as strong in my arm pit sweating. I use to have to reapply deo to stay dry, but now just once and it's all good Sent from my iPhone using VST -
I had been having issues with things moving like they should! With all the protein I was locked up tighter than Fort Knox! Mom was a health food nut and told me about psyllium awhile ago, I now take magnesium pills twice a day as well as taking several psyllium capsules a day. The combination of the two keeps me "regular" without having to worry about a complete blow out. (sorry if that is TMI) One great thing about the psyllium is that it also absorbs grease and cholesterol so it is serving a dual purpose!
