Attention Ladies Who Took Birth Control Pills

I am told to stop taking BC two weeks before and 6-8 weeks after due to it increasing the risk of developing clots. My surgeon automatically gives heparin while in the hospital to decrease the chances. I have been on BC for many years to regulate and it is always given a bad rap about weight gain- if you read the fine print it says weight gain OR loss....AND is minimal, less than 5 pounds. So I wouldn't worry about it affecting your weight loss. My concern isn't it affecting my weight loss but more so my weight loss affecting my periods. Rapid weight gain or loss can drastically change menstrations....so to me.... The benefits outweigh the risks. So I will continue taking my BC when cleared to do so.

    Talk about bad luck!

I'm sorry to hear about this too. If you were hooked up to an IV, then the weight gain could simply be fluids. It takes a good few days to pee them all out it seems. Best of luck to you.

    OCTOBER 2014

@@Luna222 Bummer on the weight gain. But I agree with Amylynns with the period thing Water retention does work against you. Once this period is over you will make great progress. The journaling is a great idea because it makes you stop and think about what you are eating and it tells you exactly what you have been eating. Even though it's incredible that we can gain weight given the reality of our surgery from what I read the cause is mostly due to the fact that we can eat small amounts all day long. We are not really hungry but a couple bites here and there add up. I have been guilty of that at times. I started to notice a pattern with me. I was snaking more because my meals were too small and too quick. In other words, I have to have a Breakfast if I am hungry or not or I'll tend to snack. A slice of cheese and two crackers, then 1/2 of a banana with 2 potato chips, etc. They are small but if I have 4 of those in a morning I am eating way more calories then if I eat a single egg with veggies or berries. I love mild swiss cheese and eat it as a snack. A single rolled slice is such a treat to me but I could have 6 in a day. That's a lot of extra calories I don't need. I am stalled right now at 167.4 for a week. It's incredible that everyday the exact same weight appears. You would think it would vary even a .1 or something. I think it's because my activity level is not very high. I do sit around a bit too much. Time to rock and roll. I have to find a project that gets my body moving.

    Susan's Solemn Silliness

Last night was Passover for my family and as with most holidays it was a feast. I felt a little awkward because the last time I had seen most of these people, I was 40 lbs lighter. I know most of us can relate to that! Anyways, I indulged of course...:hungry: many of these foods probably wont go down the band. No one said anything about my weight gain, but I am sure they were wondering.... These are people I will not disclose or discuss my band with. It kept running though my mind the next time I see them and the marked contrast in how much food I will consume. Then I started to think about when people notice me losing weight again....they are sure to ask what I am doing. My answer: PORTION CONTROL!:high5: Susan

This thread is going to be sooo inappropriate!

Ugh, I'd definitely be up a size if I put on 5lb. I dont let my weight vary by more than 2. I'm very lucky, my weight stays VERY stable, it never goes down, but it doesnt usually go up by more than 1lb unless its period time. I take action at 1lb, I cut back for a few days. And I absolutely NEVER miss my exercise. I really believe that the true benefit of exercise in relation to weight is in preventing regain, I am amazed at how far I can push things without gaining weight, and I've had the same experience at times in my life before when I've been a regular exerciser for long periods. It'd be PANIC stations here if I gained 5lb. I dont even want to think about it happening. I must not be prone to Water weight gain becuase you're right, you're not gaining and losing fat really.

    Sex Life

I have a healthy sex drive and unfortunately my long time boyfriend sex drive has drooped. When we First met we had sex almost everyday if not everyday. But since I've gain so much weight its like I'm pulling his teeth. I asked him was it my weight that was an issue he said yes. I was really hurt by it. I've tried everything to lose weight but I would gain it all over again. We're still together but its not the same, I always have that thing in the back of my mind that he'll leave because of my uncontrollable weight gain and other issues we are facing. (I have not had banding yet)

    surviving an Un-fill

Hi all:scared2: It has been a while since I posted or came on this forum. I had many changes in my life since I the last time I was here. I got re-married, both my parents past away months of each other; I have had lots of stress. On March 3 2009 I had a fill and un-fill within 2 days leaving 8.5cc in my 10cc. Band. For the past 5 months I‘ve been plague with very bad acid reflux (throwing-up in my sleep even 3 to 4 hours after eating) and no restriction. As a result my diet consists of soup, and any mushy food. Today I went for a fill, instead I had barium and esophagus x-ray to find out I am to restricted which cause the acid reflux, and the diet of mushy food caused the weight gain (21lbs) and I had to have my band un-fill. They took out 5cc leaving only 3cc. I feel horrible, like I have to start all over. How will I prevent myself from gaining more weight? 3cc. Is nothing! Help me please, I need help:scared2::biggrin: Thank you

How is weight loss for people over 50?

South Beach diet is the best to follow. My PCP put me on it. Addiction to sweets is connected to spiking blood sugar, which leads to hunger and weight gain and can eventually lead to diabetes. If you follow the diet, the sugar cravings go away. To break the sugar addiction, you also have to avoid the foods that your body turns into sugar right away. The rate at which the body turns food into sugar is called the Glycemic index. The idea is for the body to turn food to sugar slowly so your blood sugar doesn't spike. For example Oat bran breads' GI is 68 while french baguette is 136. Or sweet potato is 63 while baked potato is 158!!! This really does work. Now it is time for me to follow my own advice. I ate really high GI foods for Tday and have been on a sugar binge since then. Congradulations on your no sugar day.:clap2:

Victorious Valentines - Feb. 08 - MASTER THREAD!

Hey LilMiss, The issues you are having - are you sure that cancelling the unfill was best? I REALLY hate to think that you might be doing some damage to your system through your nightly coughing. The appointment with the nutritionist can't do any harm, and may be beneficial, but I worry about your coughing. The sweet demon isn't my enemy - but those high fat Proteins are doing me in! Nuts, nuts and more nuts! I know that some of my weight gain can be attributed to the empty calories of alcohol (I went from one glass of wine a week, to having multiple glasses almost every day while on holiday). BAH!!! That is easily controlled. But the need for proteins, and my loves of all things nutty and cheesy are going to be a bigger struggle. How is everyone else doing? Roll call: Shiny, Ezma; Marathinner; Angie; Lori; Jul; RSG; St Louis; CKK;TSK; Mom; and others.
  12. If your out of control you have to regain that control. 1. track everything you eat 2. prioritize water 3. stop eating sugar - includes all the foods loaded with sugar 4. get out all those papers from your surgery and read the avoid these list again. 5. highly refined foods loaded with simple carbs are your path back to weight gain. how much of your grocery basket came from the 3 walls ? 1. produce 2. meats 3. dairy how much is from the center of the store ?
  13. I just attended a support group and a someone asked how to prevent and reverse regain and here were some things mentioned: Start planning and timing your meals again Dont eat and drink within 30 mins of each other Hydrate for the majority of your day (calorie and sugar free) you cant over eat if youre drinking No random snacking, this is grazing and leads to weight gain Weight yourself weekly, youll always know whats really going on Attend support groups Mental health is as important as physical, dont neglect it Any major changes call your Doctor immediately
  14. Hello, I had sleeve on 12/16 and my weight has not moved much and today I noticed it's back up 3lbs. I lost 13lbs on pre op but nothing after surgery. Is this normal? I'm feeling discouraged. I've been on full liquids. I get my protein in the form of shakes and yogurt. It's hard to get fluids in but I am doing that too. Any advice or help? Sent from my SM-A716U using BariatricPal mobile app
  15. If Aenta is administrator of med in your state they might have a say, but its doubtful. There just an intermediate paperwork pusher. I'd do your best to not be over the start value. Don't over worry about it or the stress will cause weight gain. Eddy Blaine Brown II
  16. The scale keeps me aware of microtrends. I use MyFitnessPal to track my weight and I weigh daily. There have been three two-week intervals where I gained and lost 6-8 lbs. even though via food-tracking, I confirmed there was absolutely no change in my daily caloric intake. I reassured myself that these gain/losses were aberrations, not signs of actual weight gain. They could be explained by water retention, salt increase, medication changes, etc. So I look at 7 day, 30 day, 90 day, and 180 day trends. For the past six months, I've been relatively stable and I owe this to food diarying and daily weighing.

    June 2021- calling all Vets!

RNY April of 2012, so that makes 9+ years out. My surgeon no longer practices bariatric surgery and most likely isn't even in my state any longer. I have had to make due with visits to hematologists, psychologists, primary care docs and more recently, went to a different WLS center for a consult and also to an endocrinologist to address the weight creep up that has taken years to put on--really can't blame the Covid, but rather letting a combo of sloppy habits and less intense exercise run the course to the expected outcome: the dreaded regain. To complicate matters, I have been so exhausted that I have been trying to get to the bottom of that as well. Ruled out anemia (I have had to get iron infusions three times), ruled out thyroid (although I do take NP thyroid and the endo upped the dosage a little bit), and while menopause is a factor, I got on bioidentical hormones to try and feel better. Somewhere in the middle of this, I had the brilliant idea that perhaps I should wean myself off antidepressants because they might have contributed to the weight gain as well. Uh. This is not the year to get off antidepressants, being all stressed out at work with all the students back to in-person learning and no clear direction about how to distance kids who seem determined to sit on top of one another, etc. After the new bariatric consult, where I was basically told that because I had open gastric bypass and then had incisional hernia repair and fleur de lis abdominoplasty, my insides are too messy to do any kind of revision, with the adhesions and all. But what I NEEDED to hear was what I have been doing: back to basics. Push that protein--90 grams. Watch the carbs and fat. Exercise. And eat less calories. 1200-1400. Since that visit I have tracked my intake on MFP and gave myself one day a week to have a higher calorie day and some kind of splurge. The rest of the week I do two very high protein meal replacement shakes, a Greek yogurt, a couple of hard boiled eggs and something small but proteiny and veg for dinner. I have to say, keeping it boring has kept the appetite at bay. And so far, so good. Nearly back to Onderland again, and I plan on keeping going until I get back to my lowest weight, which hilariously still has me in the overweight category according to the BMI. In addition, since not crawling into bed as soon as I get home is one of my major goals, I went back on the antidepressant, at a little higher dosage after explaining my symptoms of exhaustion. All this to say that the work is never done and I wouldn't have it any other way! This is my first post and I figured I would just throw it all out there and include the juice, since that is what it is all about for me and I have been very much enjoying reading all the posts here. Didn't want to be a freeloader with nothing to contribute
  18. Hi Chel, Sorry to hear about the allergic reaction to the glue, I hope you are feeling better. I know you already found out about the weight gain being attributed to surgery. I am 15 months post gastric sleeve and I had my gallbladder out about 7 weeks ago. I was pretty surprised that my weight went up almost 9 lbs two weeks after gallbladder removal. After I kinda freaked out about it, I calmed down and thought to myself that the surgery was probably the culprit, and it was...you know, fluid retention etc. Hope you have a speedy recovery!
  19. Here is a recently article on the Gov. & His weight gain after Gastric Bypass. Karen Tumulty, who interviewed Huckabee in February for the Washingotn Post observed this scene: Huckabee was tucking into a Breakfast of eggs and butter-slathered pancakes at a trendy New York hotel overlooking Times Square. His much-discussed diet – he famously lost more than 100 pounds after a diabetes diagnosis in 2003 and wrote a book about eating right – is apparently on hiatus. This can happen to you or I or anyone who Desires to change our health and to live longer. Personally I am tired of all the meds I take daily and the fact I can hardly walk as pain in my knees and hips are so bad. Being in ministry it makes others question my faith by saying where is my faith believing GOD for a miracle. GOD isn't going to give me or you a miracle, if we don't do as we should; eat right and change our LIFE! I was banded in June 4th, so s little over two months ago after much sickness since 2008. Previously I walked daily 5-10 a day and ate right too. U had heart & kidney failure in Nov 22, 2008 And feel and broke both knees in Jan 2009. The weight piled on after this point from 230-240 to 318 at my surgery date. Last year working with my dr and her staff I was eating right and reduced down to 275 only to gain it back so my BMI would be correct to be approved by insurance. I regret regaining the weight, when with my health issues the insurance would have not turned me down. I should have never listened to the Lap band departments insurance staff. That being behind me after these few weeks I am down to 287 and hope to be down to 210-220 by the holidays. I will be praying for Gov Huckabee.
  20. Wow that's amazing! Yeah I'm already fighting weight gain but it's so hard because since I no where have no fluid in my band everything goes through and I'm hungry all the time!! I have to control myself...especiallly since I'm able to eat EVERYTHING with no restriction. I just want this out and revised to be 100% on track with my weight loss goals. Being hungry all the time I still terrible! I really hope I have similar success as you have had!!!

    Why Lie?!?!

"WLS....but I can't see someone only giving out part of the information that makes them look good or feel accepted." I find my weight no ones business. And I certainly don't give partial info just to make myself look good or feel accepted. I don't give a **** if someone thinks I'm good at something or accept me. To me, my weight gain and/or loss is very personal to me. I guess I could take your advice and when someone insists on prying and asks me about my weight.. And instead of giving a partial answer, I will simply not answer and see how that flies
  22. I was always larger than my best friend - not by much but that's the way it was. It didn't bother me, I never felt like I was competing against her. Sadly, she felt she was competing with me. Around the time I got banded, she was put on medication that prompted weight gain, so I was going down while she was going up. She told me I would die from the band. She printed out information off the internet (from questionable sources) outlining all the bad things that would happen. She went so far as to tell me to get it removed merely weeks after I got the surgery. I honestly thought my best friend would be there for me but she changed completely (or maybe she was always nasty deep down). I eventually told her to get lost and we haven't spoken since and that's fine with me. I'm not here to be anyone's 'fat' friend.

Tomorrow I go to the meeting at Beth Israel Deac and next week I go to my final meeting at Brigh and Wom. For some reason I gravitate towards the Brig. One thing I definitely want is a facility with a good post op support ring to attend and good aftercare as well as a good facility and , above all, experienced specialist. So next week I will be on the forum looking up drs and finding out about the treatment received by the guys and gals here. Do they provide a nutritionist to help you lose the 10 lbs? Even 10 lbs is monumental for some of us! One of the many reasons I chose the Band vs the GP, music, is the weight gain is not scaringly dramatic! I'd rather lose steadily and moderately...if I don't do it that way, my body will look sick and saggy ...especially at my age (a young looking 59 so I am told)
  24. Congratulations, you look wonderful, thank you for your picture and motivation. Can you imagine how great it will be on the next months for you... How are you feeling? Everything going down okay? How was.the pain? I'm soon to get my surgery and truth be told, feel like hell with a thyroid condition that caused more weight gain, now insulin which made it worse and can't breath too well. Going to my cardiologist appointment soon. Hoping this surgery can make it all better. Good luck and keep us updated.

Aetna...What did you do to get approved?

    1. General practitioner weight loss appointment 1 x every month for 5 months. Never gained but showed a loss. Dr had me on phentermine for 3 of the months so I wouldn't gain during this time period. Btw this was a new Dr that I had just obtained last October so no two year weight history was necessary. 2. Nutritionist 1 x every month for 3 months. 3. Psych doc approval. Already had been seeing him for 1 1/2 yr. So only 1 visit was necessary. 4. 1 overnight sleep test to establish sleep apnea. + Established knee problems + Meds for bi-polar cause weight gain. Make me extra hungry! I was approved in 4 days after paper work submitted. Hope this helps. Good luck!
