Pre op and post op from UK

Hi, I am! I am from London. Banded about 8 years ago and now looking at getting it revised to a bypass.
  2. I knew exactly what the date of my last period was because I charted every day, every test, etc. When I went for my first ultrasound, they measured the size at 10 days younger and gave me a new expected due date. However, they kept all the charts from my LMP due date. I have personally gone with my revised ultrasound due date because I would rather think I have less time to go when he comes even though my charts say different. I would hate to hit my original due date and spend 10 extra days waiting, and waiting, and waiting for "the day."

    July surgery

@clsumrall I noticed you were confused on my earlier response. Assuming your confused from my stats on my prior VSG? I'm having a revision of my sleeve next Wednessay.
  4. Hi, I've been lurking for a few months while I was trying to decide which surgery to have. I am scheduled for Lap Band surgery on May 23rd. I have my pre-op and final visit with the surgeon this Friday. I've been reading posts from people who are having very little weight loss or very slow, hungry, eating what they used to, disappointed, etc. etc. This really scares me. Is this the norm? I am worried that I made the wrong decision. I am 58 and don't have time to make a big mistake like this and go in for a revision.:cry I"ve read all the 'statistics' but I could use the real scoop on what the typical person can expect. Please can someone help?

    Revision of RNY

I am going to follow this as I have not yet heard of a bypass being revised. Good luck in whatever you choose. The weight loss battle is a very difficult one.

    African American vsgers!

I start my two week pre-op diet on Wednesday. I'm revising from the band to the sleeve on August 12th. I'm so ready to get this started. UPDATE: I just got a call asking me if I wanted to change my date to August 10. Hel-lro! Yes Indeed!

    Advice needed - VSG Failure

Oh wow...I’m sorry to hear this, and I hope it gets better. Are you thinking of having a revision?..
  8. I was banded 1/08. I lost ~125, then lost full, gained a bunch back, had revision surgery 10/09. I got back to a total loss of 110 then got preggers. Had an unfilled and gained most all back. My baby is 13 mos and I finally got a fill again this week. So now I'm down about 60 from original and 100 to get to goal. Exercise....just keeping the faith...that's me
  9. Are you going to have revision surgery? Hope you're feeling okay. I haven't been on here in a while, I've been so busy at work it's not even funny. The last time I went in for a fill 4/2/12, I only lost 6 lbs in a month, but I spent a week on vacation not working out and eating like crap. The APRN decides to put me on Adipex. This past Wednesday I went in for a f/up appt and lost 7 lbs. IDK if it's the band or the medication, but I can eat small meals and be satisfied for 4 + hours. I go back on May 21st for a fill. I have a 4 cc band and I think I'm almost at capacity. If that happens, and I don't lose a ton of weight in six months, I may look into revision surgery. I'm tired of the ups and downs.

    What to bring to hospital?

I ended up being in the hospital for 3 nights and 4 days due to some complications but I didn't care what I was wearing. I put my robe on over the hospital gown so I could walk the halls. I brought some lip balm because my lips got very dry. A notebook and pen for writing down notes and information given by medical staff. Due to the meds you may forget a lot of it so its better to write it all down. Your cell phone or Ipad will be great company, and maybe a magazine. Other than that you really don't need much more than your toothbrush and toothpaste, brush, and some lotion for your body. You will be dry from drinking so little. I brought too much stuff to the hospital last time but when I have my revision at the end of the summer I will travel a lot lighter. lol
  11. I waited 6 months and had no problem- though in excess the hang overs are much worse than before. I guess the revised digestive system cannot process it as well or something

Checking in with all the february peeps

I am coming up on 4 months Post op and I am so happy. The Scale this morning said 200.5 I am so excited to think I will be under 200 pounds again. It has been 16 years since I was under 200 pounds. I am not there yet but so confident in the sleeve surgery, after a failed lap band. I had a rough day the other day, was picking at food all day long and made a spaghetti bolognese for dinner. My baby 4 ounce stomach had just about enough of my bad behavior and let me know. for all you lap band to sleeve revisions who had no problem vomiting daily like I did. This was so different. It was torture. and I am so Happy it was. With the lap band if something got stuck, just vomit. I feel like I will never do that again after what it was like to puke up spaghetti bolognese. lesson learned. Would love to hear from the February peeps the good bad and ugly. 53.2 pounds down. Not even 4 months out.

    Stupid weight loss advice

I believe this is sound science but it's just the amount of butter and heavy cream I could out away pre-band.....thank goodness those days are over. So enjoying being a dairy eater now, and this includes indulging in a little wedge of yummy cheese here and there, real butter if I fry an egg, etc. But back then it was so much more.....even a salad I would eat is amazing to think about now, that volume, Actually, new research plus old research that was buried for many years says your mom is right. It's the carbs, not the fat. Take a look at Gary Taub's books Good Carbs Bad Carbs or Why We Get Fat. Journalistic discovery of all the research and studies over the years that did not agree with the low fat bandwagon. Nations around the world (like Sweden) are revising their nutritional guidelines as we speak. I was low fat for decades, did nothing to keep me from gaining weight. Now I eat all the heavy cream and butter I want but keep my carbs very low and I maintain my weight very easily. Not to sound preachy, but the world is a-changing and everything we took for granted about nutrition since the 60's is being turned on its head.

    Lab Band Removal Experience?

Had mine done outpatient. Insurance covered it as part of WLS revision. Pain was minimal but my stomach felt heavy when walking for about 3 weeks.
  16. I do wish you the best of luck in whatever route you take, but in the end, the weight-loss starts with you. RNY, DS, the sleeve, Lapband; no matter what WLS method you choose, you have to be willing to make the lifestyle change, and it seems that you aren't ready or just don't want to. WLS to me is just a tool. Yes those who get RNY/DS lose quickly, but in the end it comes down to you to make the healthy choices, both food and exercise wise. Maybe the band isn't for you, but with your mindset and eating habits, another WLS may not get you to where you want to be either. None of them are a perfect answer; they're all tools to use to help you during the lifestyle change. While the malabsorption may help you more than the band could, still eating improperly will cause you to gain the weight back. I'd consider therapy or just talking to someone about your eating habits. You can't eat unhealthy and expect to lose weight just because you revise to DS or RNY. It's not that easy.

Does anyone regret getting their LB?

I used to love my band until I started choking on vomit in my sleep. I am revising to a sleeve soon. The band was great at first, until that started happening. I am not having trouble now, but I have no restriction. I ate a plate of spaghetti and 2 pieces of garlic bread tonight. okay, call me an over eater, but that is what I got the band for. If I were to get a fill, I would go back to choking on vomit in my sleep. It's a very fine line between being too tight and being too loose. I am tired of worrying about fills and unfills so I am getting the sleeve surgery. Sorry, but I have to be truthful here.

Does anyone regret getting their LB?

Yes I do but I can't go back in time but hopefully will be able to revise to a different surgery that will work for me.

    Hypothyroids & Weightloss

I revised diagnoses from my doctor two months ago and the first thing I did is research on hypothyroidism metabolic syndrome the second thing I did was research was VSG. Yup the VSG won! I've lost 100 plus lbs twice in my life and it's ALWAYS been a daily battle and now my thyroid. I'm so done! Glad to here weight loss is very possible.
  20. Thank you! The time will go by super fast, before you know it you’ll be at 3 months. I feel like I’m a rather slow loser which is usually the case as a revision vs a first time wls patient. But as long as it’s still coming off it then it’s all good. Good luck to you, I’m sure you’ll hit 180-190 in no time [emoji4]
  21. I was feeling the same way you were. Being on this board made me sad cause there's so many people who have little to no pain and I'm still on paid meds. My surgery was on July 8th and I am 5 days out. I am not a medicine taker but it's getting to the point if I have to leave the house I make sure to bring pain meds!!!! My doctor was so certain I wouldn't need them after day 2!!! So not true! I had a lot of pain in my right side. I am also a band to sleeve revise so I was wondering if that played a role as well. Good luck to you. Today is day 5 and I haven't taken any pain meds yet today so maybe day 5 is the breakthrough day! I was also able to sleep on my side last night!!! Hope all gets better for you. :-)
  22. I am sorry that you are going through this what is your surgeon saying, is there nothing that they can do to correct this issue besides a revision, can they recheck to see id perhaps something is preventing you to hold down food, or perhaps your pouch needs to be open? I do hope that you get relief soon. Best of luck.
  23. Hi, Mimi! Welcome. Here's my take, for what it's worth. (And I think it's worth a lot cuz I mostly copied it from coffee Wench and she knows everything.) With either surgery you will have to learn new ways to eat and deal with life. With the bypass, you WILL lose the weight, but you will gain it back if you don't do the learning. With the band, you have to make the changes to lose any substantial amount of weight. So, let's look at the "failures." Two years out, the unsuccessful bypass people lost and then regained and the unsuccessful band people never lost. And the unsuccessful bypass patients (it used to be 20%) have had massive, organ-rearranging surgery, and need a lifetime of supplements and have an increased risk of other health problems, while the unsuccessful band patients have a band that can stay, can get deflated or can get removed (sometimes with lap surgery, sometimes with open). There are, of course successful people with either surgery. But a far higher percentage of bypass patients have complications which require re-operating ("revisions") and/or OR visits. There are many people who have BMI's similar to yours and who are doing (or have done) well with the LapBand...including those who were much heavier than you. By the way, most surgeons who have done well with the bypass tend to prefer it. They think it is more successful because, after the surgery, they see only the patients with complications. Band patients take more follow-up care, and most US trained surgeons are not so into the day-to-day, patient support that's needed with the band. I think they tend to measure "successes" in terms of what percentage of patients they never have to deal with again...and with the band, that's "zero percent." Sue

Does Your Band Stop Your Hunger

No with the sleeve food does not get stuck. You can eat anything you want, just not very much of it. You do get full pretty fast. I am kind of a grazer though. I get full pretty fast, but then maybe a couple hours later, I might have a healthy snack. There are some days I just don't feel like messing with food or cooking or dishes and I will have 3 Protein shakes per day and be perfectly satisfied. I didn't start having band problems until after I had the band for a couple of years. I could just see more problems coming, so I revised to the sleeve before that started happening. I am really glad I did.

Does Your Band Stop Your Hunger

The sleeve does take away all the hunger. I am never hungry. I eat by the clock. I eat when I get up, I eat at 12 noon and I eat at 5pm or later if I am going to dinner with friends. I am really glad I got a revision to a sleeve. I always felt guilty with the band that I was doing something wrong. I could not tell if I needed a fill, or if I was supposed to be able to work with the fill I had. When that decision was taken away from me by my dr. because of vomiting in my sleep, I am glad the sleeve was available because it's been the very best I have felt in years. It's so easy to maintain without effort.
