You'll have to contact your insurance company to answer your specific plan coverage. They vary widely. Otherwise, all the advice above is correct. Most bariatric programs will have a qualified dietician to help you with your supervised weight loss plan. Good luck!!

Depends on your insurance, you may have to get a referral from your PCP. At my surgeons office they have a dietitian there. Patients that are required to do a diet, go thru her. You will have to pay a percentage of the surgeon's fees. Its the portion your insurance doesn't cover. Most weight loss surgeons require you to go their free seminar about the surgery before you can even make an appointment. Hope this helps.

Lifelong dieter - I've tried it all, spent all the money... Lost some, gained more - you know the drill. I'm considering the Gastric Sleeve and currently jumping through the hoops for insurance and all the doctors. Some topics that keep rolling through my head : - Is Weight Loss Surgery just a medically approved way into disordered eating? - How much of this is health based vs. fat phobia? - I'm really struggling to reconcile what is truth and what is fat-panic. Has anyone else had these thoughts? - I've only told a few people in my life I'm considering surgery. I want to get really smart about it before I roll out a plan to friends and family. Any hot tips would be great! Looking to speak with some women who've done WLS who started with 200+ lbs to lose

I am starting a blog for myself to have a way to look back and keep a log of my feelings, attitudes, struggles and triumphs. I am Canadian living in Manitoba. Our system in Manitoba anyway is very different than many stories I see on this site. I started out putting myself on the surgery wait list it takes approx. 2 to 2 1/2 years to get past that. Then you go to a large group meeting where they go over a in broad terms what the next levels/steps will look like and give you a info package and a in depth questionnaire regarding your current health. It was then 3 months after that I had my first one on one meetings. I do mean meetings you do 1 hour each with a kinesologist, dietician, psychologist, and surgical nurse - they go over your current status and set goals for your next meeting if you are accepted. It was again 3 months since the first set of meetings this past Aug 18th that I had my next set of meetings. I am still waiting to move to the next step - my iron levels are not at the right level for me to move on and this is not negotiable. Your Iron levels must be a minimum of 50 before you will get to move to meeting the anesthetist, surgeon, and start the classes for pre-op and post op diets. My iron levels were 45 close but not close enough. My next blood work is around the 21st or 22nd whenever I wish to go to the lab. I will hear the following week if my blood work passes. I will admit though up till I went to my individual meetings I was extremely naïve about this whole process and what to expect and how intense/involved this all is. I have done a lot of self education in the last 6 to 8 months. I suppose its a good thing I do not frighten easy and really do not shy away from hard work, but I will say I thought it was simple surgery and recovery would be a breeze. I also thought we would be given more of a choice into the type of surgery. Not in Manitoba 99% of have bypass that is what has the best overall long term weight loss results and if in the future medically things need to be undone you are able to. The sleeve may be done depending on your health. There has only been one patient once inside that they just closed back up without doing anything- that was because of health related issues and an exceptional case and that is all they can tell us understandably. I am excited and nervously awaiting moving to the next step. I don't think any of this will be truly real until I meet with the surgeon and anesthetist. Heres hoping for good news when they call at the end of September.

Congratulations! Can I ask what Kind of "diet" Aetna made you pursue before approving your surgery? I'm almost up to the insurance approval phase and just want to know what to expect.......the best of luck with your weight loss journey! Gaila

Beginning to consider thinking about....

I had a wretched recovery. I was in the hospital extra days because I couldn't hold anything down, when I finally got home I was exhausted and dehydrated. It really sucked, and I would do it over and over again. Preop I had a good life, I have great friends, a wonderful family, and the greatest boyfriend in the wide world. Post op is even better. It is challenging, but I am succeeding, It is a magnifying glass for my life, the things that are good feel even better, the things that were bad are either falling by the wayside or I am learning greater ways to deal with them. As to some of your questions, I have much more energy now then I have in ten years. The first month I had to nap everyday, now I am getting more done and sleeping better then I ever have. I haven't lost hair....yet, and I am vain about my hair too. It is one of those things that no matter how fat I got my hair stayed pretty, but even if I was BALD I would still do it! I was really worried about the skin thing too. My arms are pretty floppy and I am working them out every day. My lower stomach looks like some crazy bread dough, and my thighs are gonna have some issues, but my butt is way smaller, I have a waist, my face is thin. There certainly are challenges, but for me the benefits have more than made up for them. Best of luck to you!!! -
I am going to Six Flags tomorrow and for the first time since probably high school, I am not dreading trying to squeeze myelf into the coaster cars...how 'bout that for an NSV! And when I fly to Cozumel in december, my plane seat will be much roomier! My feet have shrunk 1 1/2 sizes!! AND I wore my husband's camo to deer hunt in tonight...lol...a bizarre NSV but a good one nonetheless. Can't wait to be able to wear his jeans in addition to the camo pants and shirts! I can get the jenas on but all my loose fat rolls get squeezed up under my boobs nd it looks terrible...lol. I can wear his t-shirts though without stretching them out of shape. And finally,I got my first back massage from my hubby since my surgery and he was complaining that my back was bony...and the massage hurt because he was grinding my skin over my bones without any of my old cushion! That was a surprise. In other news, my promotion has been God send. I love it! I have found the perfectblend of nurse management/educator and I actually enjoy my work again! The only thing is, I can't sleep at nigh because I am thinking about work. I also am itching ALL the time. I think even though I don't perceive any stess right now, it has manifested itself with insomnia and itching and eczema flareups. Maybe too much change too soon? I think I need to see my PCP and get something to mellow me out a little or at least to shut my brain down at night so Iam not lying awake thinking about diet and exercise and work. None of these thought cycles are very rest-inducing! I also am having self-esteem and sex drive issues. In the past, when I have lost alot of weight and even been at the weight I am now, I have had soaring confidence and my drve was out of this world, but not this time. When I look in the mirror and am in my birthday suit, I cringe at the flabby dimply mess! I don't know why this is...I have added more resistance training to tone up, but heck, I should be tickled that I am in a 14 and can actually shop places other than Lane BRYANTor in the plus sections a dept stores. And because I feel so bad about the way I look, my sex drive has not improved with all this weight loss. Hopefully in time I will tighten up and this will change.

"Just 62 pounds?"
girl4god77 replied to venomousflowers's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Your surgeon needs to work on his people skills. But most do. First of all, there's no such thing as what you're supposed to lose by a certain time. Everyone is different. At my 6 week appt they told me that some people lose the majority of their weight in the first 6 months & some take 2 years. But remember, the closer you get to goal weight, the slower the weight loss is. Second: look at what you're doing & see if it needs tweaking. Are you getting your Protein & Water in? Staying under your cal goal? Exercising enough? Are you keeping carbs under 50g? Some programs (including mine) say it's ok to eat whole grain bread & other complex carbs but I stay away from those things completely as they have no nutritional value for us when we are limited to so few calories. (I only get 600 cals per day. There's no way I'm wasting 100 of those on a piece of bread). If you're doing what you're supposed to then you're not a failure. Just keep doing it. I have people that are telling me not to have weight loss surgery that has had it themselves and were successful. I can't understand why some individuals would discourage ME IN that way. They had it and did fine, so my question is why would they tell me YOU CAN LOOSE IT THE NATURAL WAY!!! I'M SO SICK OF HEARING THAT! WHY DIDN'T YOU LOOSE IT THE NATURAL WAY. SOME PEOPLE ARE SO FULL OF IT!!! I'M JUST SAYIN THAT'S ALL!!!

You are young, just turn on some music and dance for 45 minutes you will see the weight just drop off. Dance however you want no one will see you! Do it twice a day double the loss maybe. Just keep moving. Cheri -
Hi, this is my first time posting. I'm having a bit of a prob right now. I was banded Sept 07 and I have had a bit of a prob with fills. Either its too tight or too loose. I have never found a happy middle and I'm a bit confused about it. My last 2 fills my Dr. has giving me were a half of a cc each and they were ok until something got stuck one day about a month ago and then I couldn't really hold things down well. I would even would choke on Water in the mornings sometimes. Then the horrible acid reflux started. I know I should have called my Dr. after I noticed the prob but I just thought my stomach was irritated from the bad choking spell I had before. Anyways, I called him about 2 weeks after it all started and he was scared I had a slippage so he took my last 2 fills out (1 cc) and said to call him the following day if I had anymore probs...well the choking and the acid went away completely...but so did the restriction..It's been 2 weeks and i feel like im starving so I'm at a loss ..its either risk damaging my stomach or have no resection..I only have 2.5 cc's in my band....this cant be right .. any advice would be much appreciated Thanks, B

Hi all I'm new to this blog stuff so please cut my a little slack. I've been searching for a solution to weight issues all my life and have done and tried almost all things out there About 10 years ago a good friend and business associate had a bypass he is 6'7" and was 450 or so. His was a forced issue as his family history of heart attacks was catching up to him. Results were mixed 150 plus loss but plenty of complications along the way. So while considering and studying this I decided it was not for me. Another friend had lapband and results were fantastic BUT after a year or so weight came creeping back along with the out of control feeling and helplessness. I remembered these feelings well as I lost 109 lbs in 90 days on pills and shots That was back in the 80's I could watch a commercial on TV and gain 5 lbs devastating feeling. I also learned that this procedure had its fair share of complications and weight gain was not insignificant. So here I am 61 years old retired since 04 going to do something for myself. Type A guy intense all the attributes. Gastric sleeve is for me. Starting weight about 2 wks ago was 362 not my highest but up there started th 1200 calorie about 9 days ago and will go until surgery march 6. Dr Nicholson out of Dallas is my guy. My regular drs partners wife (got that) had hers done there and I've since found a lot of drs send themselves their family members to him that shortened my search a lot These forums have truly been a blessing to me and I am going to try to contribute in a meaningful way as I travel along Thanks to all

Welcome Lisa and Joaniliz. Lisa I am also from Canada but I was banded in Sarnia ON on June 2. I found the best thing for keeping the bowels moving in the early stages was juicing fresh fruit, apples seemed to work the best for me. For the gas...just keep moving and it will release. Welcome to the new world of bandsters, and thank God for our new tool to help us through our weight loss journey. Good luck to you both! -
I had my 1st fill on Wed and when I talked to the aftercare person she told me that if I didn't take in my 50-60g of protein a day I would start seeing brital nails, hair loss, saggy skin, etc. So are you getting enough protein? If not that might be your problem.

Thanks, Trinity. I did notice Inova Fair Oaks and Johns Hopkins in Baltimore listed as Centers of Excellence or something of the sort, so I'm going to look into both. Did BCBS require you to show records of a supervised weight-loss plan that didn't work before aproving the surgical alternative? Thanks again!

Hi all! My surgeon and I have been talking about my exercise since I was an exerciser pre-band (just didn't watch what I ate). He suggested that at some point I would probably need to start running to continue the weight loss. I already spend 5-7 days a week exercising (treadmill, elliptical, weights, and step aerobics) and he thinks running will kick it into a highter gear. I've wanted to become a runner anyway since I enjoy participating in 5K's -- eventually 10K's?? Here is my question.....for those of you who are runners, at what weight did you begin running and how did you do it? Thanks for any ideas you all have!

Family friend died from lapband surgery last week
kbugmom replied to alicat3924's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I will say a prayer for this family. I am definately understanding what they are going through. So sorry for their loss. There will be mixed emotions and as I have learned with the grief process there are stages of grief and sometimes it hits you like a ton of bricks. So I definately will be praying for this family. Take care Kbug -
So how many of you are going to be focused on losing over the holiday? How many of you are just going to pray that you dont gain anything? how many are just going to do their best, but may cheat a little? As a lifestyle change, which is what the band is right? I am not planning on gaining, hope i will lose, but still plan to enjoy some of our holiday traditions. such as...we eat rubens for christmas dinner, i plan on having some corned beef with a little cheese maybe a cookie for desert. I am not going to deny myself everything and be miserable that icant enjoy holiday traditions in my family. Will i be more careful aboutthe amounts of what i am eating and avoid most of the sweets? yes for sure! Whats your plan for sucess over the holiday?

Vacation after surgery???
Tracy46545 replied to jenn20's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
21 is the age of legal responsiblility. If you've already taken control of your weight issues you're ahead fo the game. Why not make your 21st birthday a celebration of your weight loss and a new direction for the rest of your life of being healthy? One or two drinks isn't going to kill you, but getting rip-roaring drunk just to celebrate turning 21 is going to add a ton of unneccessary calories and give you a headache the next day. so...the first day of your 21st year, instead of going for a hike or a swim..you'd be huddled in bed. Is that how you want to start it? You asked for opinions....here's mine. Get healthy first...be able to really enjoy all those activities in the new trimmer you and celebrate responsibly the day you turn 21. -

Congrats on you weight loss. I'm looking forward to a new wardrobe myself.

My weight never seems to move on the scale either. I take my measurements once a month and they have changed My doctor is very happy with my loss each time I see him. I have been down each time. I weigh myself toooooo much and that is very bad. Think positive you weigh less now than one year ago. And one year from now you will be even less than now. I give myself 2 years to get to be a human weight because it took me a lot of years to be fat.

To all the stallers....
Roseib replied to SFOTraveler's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Since month 3 I've lost 10-12 lbs quickly then stalled for 2-3 weeks and then started the cycle over. It's frustrating but the loss does begin again. Don't panic, Kaehl. Try shaking things up as others have said. I broke my first stall by adding a protein snack and upping my calories. I just broke my most recent stall by upping water beyond the required 64 oz.
