  1. Hello I'm a young 32 year old woman who's battled weight my whole life. After starting a journey towards weight loss surgery in 2008 I have finally achieved it just past a week ago. Got RNY, laparoscopically, finally getting back to feeling human again. I'm down 5lbs so far and feeling good. I've had a difficult time healing due to a hysterectomy and bypass in the same surgery. So ready, and happy to have finally started this chapter my book of life!

    Surgery on Nov 9th

Hi my surgey is on November 10th. My starting weight when I entered the program was 216.4. My doctor who's name is Dr. Im from Kaiser, wants me to get down to 130 lbs. That's fine with me, I look at it as pre baby having days... Lol. Good luck on your surgery. Keep in touch. Let me know how your doing after surgery so that I can get an idea about how I might be feeling afterwards since we are having them the same week

    Encouraging words

Never too early! You have already lost a lot of weight, and I know the pre-op isn't easy! I'm doing it now! Lol great job! Keep up the good work?
  4. Hi everyone, I am scheduled for surgery August 15. I am very excited but also a bit jittery. Planning to be stoic about all this. I am looking forward to getting this extra weight off me. My doctor is John Debarros in Phoenix/Tempe Arizona. He specializes in both types of weight loss surgery. Bryn:smile2:

    Documenting My Sleeve Surgery

Hi b. No, I did not have to have it supervised nor documented, just a historical of different weight loss attempts. Hang in there. Once you realize the end is near, the adrenaline will kick in and you will be on the road to a better lifestyle. Things happen for a reason (I truly believe that) - so maybe the time you are spending for the supervised weight loss will be the time needed for something else to take place in your life... I see doc tomorrow and anesthesiologist at hospital to go over last minute prep.
  6. Yes, my 3rd! Not sure what caused slip. I was having other medical problems (though i had lupus) and i was taking medication that i thought was causing my stomach probs only to find out band had slipped. My original Dr had relocated so i was forced to see another. He converted to sleeve 10.12 and kept telling me it was going to take longer to lose weight cause of the scar tissue. I only lost about 20lbs. Now 2 yrs later i have successfully gained most of my weight back. I talked to a friend that had band removed due to a faulty piece and went to her surgeon. He felt bands left too much scar tissue to make a sleeve small enough. He sent me for upper GI and found that i have a stomach that looks more like a pear not a banana!

    Discouraged and Disappointed

cheryl1952, I am self pay $13,600.00. I have State Group through the school (School Bus Driver) and it does not pay for weight loss surgeries. Although with self pay it is faster. I started with going to the seminar 6/3 and completed everything and got my call with my surgery date 6/20 and surgery 7/16. So I am not complaining about that part even though its not easy to come up with that much money. I hope things go well and you can be on your way too. Keep in touch. Thanks for the compliment on the name, my email is leaveittonana@aol.com. You know my little grandaughter must be special to have a Nana that loves her so much.
  8. I went from band to sleeve. Only two weeks post op for the sleeve. Yes doctor explained that due to a lot of scaring from the band that the weight loss will be slower, but still very successful. It's still a tool at the end of the day and depends on how you use it. However, I realised that I just couldn't live with the band anymore with the side effects. My doctor that did the sleeve stopped doing bands 4 years ago due to the side effects and higher complications. He said that there is a big difference between quality of life and he no longer wanted to promote the band. I don't regret anything ????
  9. So I had turned 30 in September and was sleeved on November 14. I am hoping for a new lease on life. I started at my highest weight 339. Throughout all pre op weigh ins nd liquid pre op diet I went to 331, 321 and I was sleeves weighing 321 that morning. I went today for my first post op visit- 301!!!!!!! I am almost out of the 3's!! I have had no complications. No vomiting. No gerd or reflux. Truthfully I feel awesome! I NEVER feel hungry also. I take my antacid pill in the am and I am still sleeping on my back, which I really don't like, so at night I take 20ml of pain mess to put me to sleep while ok not comfy on my back and that's it!!! Normal day I start with pull and some broth if a can of soup(lentil, minestrone, chikarina, pot roast) and my bf has the food part of the soup to save money. Then ill sip water. Crystal light or G2 from Gatorade until I feel like j should eat again hours later. I will have a sugar free jello or half of a sugar free pudding. Continue the sipping and always making sure to walk walk walk! I barely have calories Nd it doesn't effect me. I just bought tuna chunk lite in water in those packets with no draining needed. I'm going to start having one a day at least bc there are 18 gms of protein in each!! That's awesome!! I hope this story is showing great results Nd my ultimate goal is to hit 180 pounds before I turn 31. I want to be beautiful for engagement and wedding. I look forward to great stories and replies :-) good luck to all!

    Sudden stop in weight loss

so frustrating to stall. I checked with my nutritionist who told me it was totally normal - because our bodies are adjusting to the weight loss. A stall or plateau just means that your body is healthy and working to stay healthy. It thinks the rapid weight loss is due to illness or trauma - so it protects you until it adjusts again. The most important thing you can do is continue to drink as much Water and take in as much Protein...maybe even go back to the Liver Shrink. Keep us posted!
  11. Thank each of you for your reply. I am just not feeling with the program tonite. I keep thinking of all that lovely food I will miss...or maybe I can find a way to make it non-fattening. Food's been a big part of my life for so long, I love to cook. Can't say I do as much as it's just 2 of us again. Husband never really cared a lot about food, he'll eat just about anything I put in front of him. And if I'm not around, just make sure the Peanut Butter jar is. I have fought with my weight for the past 40 years, and lost the battle. One time I lost 100 lbs. fast, and ended up in the hospital for 2 wks, before the Drs. decided some exploratory surgery was called for. I broke my ankle at 27 and have had arthritis problems started from that - I no longer could walk correctly. My knees were both replaced about 10 years ago, (I was 50, at the time. Doing them both was a major mistake in terms of recovery for me, but got thru it.) I have had diabetes for about 15 yrs. Got a insulin pump last November. At the same time, I was diagnosed with Polymyalfia. The only med to control it is Prednisone. Between the pump and prednisone, I am just sitting back, watching myself expand. My level of exercise is practically nill, though the podiatrist is making progress with my arthritic feet. I now weigh over 300 lbs. and see no end in sight. Just gotta suck it up and do it, I guess, if I want to live another relatively comfortable 20 years. I am scared of what my life will be like if I can't get it under control. As I read what I answered, can't see a reason to hesitate. I'll be more chipper tomorrow. Thanks again.
  12. Hello, I am due for my first official step, the seminar next Tuesday. I am really conflicted about this, but I don't see another way available to get control of my weight, and life. I have many problems that the weight complicates. I'm looking for support, and I thank you for any offered.
  13. Today I had my first appointment since re-enrolling in the program for roux-en-y surgery. I met with the nurse practitioner, surgeon and coordinator. I'm happy to report I have been approved for surgery which will most likely take place this coming June or July. I had previously completed some of the requirements so a few I don't have to do. But. I'll be getting a call with my appointments soon. Weight loss goal 30 lbs. Since making my commitment I've lost 4. I can do this!

    Surgery set for Jan 11th

Congrats and welcome! I have my surgery the 10th; presurgery diet starts tomorrow! I'm pretty excited too; waiting is kinda hard. I just want to get the ball rolling and start my journey. I was 278 at my highest but managed to lose and keep off 12-15lbs recently...the weight DOES kind of sneak up on you. Don't know how I've managed to put on over 100lbs in about 7 years. But no more dwelling in the past; we have wonderful futures to look forward to! Again, welcome, and good luck; you should join the January 2011 thread.

    strugling 2yrs after surgery

I struggled for a year with too tight of a band. I was to my Dr. just last week to talk to her about it because I was miserable and struggling with maintaining and was not losing. I was actually starting to gain and was scared. She decided to take only .4 (point 4) cc (a very small amount) out of my band. Almost 1 year prior she had put in .6cc for me. It is amazing how so little of an amount can make a difference. I am doing so much better! I can eat much better choices of food and stay satisfied. Before I would try the challenging foods (almost forcing them down) and be in pain, so, then not being filled up, I would look for the easy foods like ice cream or high calorie drinks to satisfy me. But . . . now I believe I may be at my "sweet spot" finally. It took me a whole year of fighting with food and it hurting when it would go thru the band, even when it was soft foods, to realize that maybe it was just a little too tight. I wish I would have admitted it sooner, but I am very happy with how I can eat and feel full (satisfied) for the desired amount of time (4-5 hrs). I hope this may help anyone who is struggling and wondering if their band could be too tight. It is so different for each one of us individually. Sometimes it is hard to decide what to do. For me, I did not have the typical signs of it being to tight such as the acid reflux or heartburn, no throwing up or having pb. I never have had that with my band. I did not get plugged or stuck totally more than 3 times in the almost two years I have had it. So, it was hard to say it was too tight except that I was not even enjoying eating, other than the things I shouldn't be eating because they went down easy. Now, after a year of being at a plateau (I tried to look at it positively as learning to maintain) I believe (and HOPE) that I will be on the road to being able and motivated to lose more weight finally! Thanks for listening!

    Surgery June 29

I too remember that feeling. So excited for you! The best advise I can give a newbie is to do exactly what your dr tells you to do, eat the foods they tell you to and do not deviate from that plan. I made the mistake in falling back on those foods that got me to where I needed intervention simply because they didn't make me sick (milkshakes, cream of anything soups, ect). Had I ate what I was told to and the exact amounts I was told to I would have already reached my weight loss goal and would not have had such a struggle over the past 4 years. It's a constant battle for everyone I'm sure. With the proper support and guidance, you'll do just fine!
  18. Hi, I'm new here and having problems! I had the surgery on Dec. 3 and I'm still miserable. My weight is going down, but I'm in almost constant pain and discomfort. It feels like I have "bubbles' in my lungs and I am struggling to get a night's sleep. Any body else having these pain problems?

    Surgery 4/13/07 any advice?

I think at some point we have all had the "what have I done" thought but it is by far the best decision I have ever made for myself. The weight loss is slow for me, but I can tell you that I don't think about food like I used to and I feel ten thousand times better than I did pre-surgery. I am 48 lbs lighter and for the first time in years, I am actually looking forward to getting out my summer clothes from last year and not worrying about not being able to fit in them! Good luck .....the first week will be hard but you will get thru it.
  20. I'm excited today because I attended my first information meeting about bariatric surgery at Kiaser. It was informative however I must say a lot of the information I knew because I been researching on this every time a question pops up in my mind. I go tomorrow to my body analysis appointment where they take a picture and weight you prior to beginning the 12 week options program. I can't believe this is all about to get in motion. As a requirement I have to loose 10% of body weight prior to surgery (29lbs) I actually think that will be the most weight I ever lost. Well just wanted to share my journey so far.

    Feeling Nothing

I totally feel you on this. I am 5'6 presently weighting 166 and get lots of compliments but I DON'T SEE what others see. I still feel and look fat. I am six mts out. I too thought losing this weight would make me happy but it has not. Tired so darn tired all the time. Doctor said lab work was good.
  22. ChrisJ

    Fianlly Approved!

Slimagainsoon, I am only 5'3" and I am not concerned what anyone else says my goal weight should be. I know that for my height I should weigh between 118-135. I chose the upper number because of my age. Sure I know that loosing too much could make me look even older (:-)) but I think that 135 is a reasonable goal. The last time I saw any of those numbers (50 years ago) I was 120. One of my goals is to have a "normal" BMI. I do NOT want to listed on anything as "overweight, obese or morbidly obese"...been there, done that. At this point I am also 48% fat. I want to be in the normal range for that number too. So...if I get all those numbers normal...then whatever that weight ends up being is the weight I will be happy with. I'm thinking it will be 135. Thank you so much for your kind wishes...I am looking forward to joining you on the losers bench. :-)

    Has Lap Band helped you?

Hey Cammy, welcome aboard. I love my lapband. It's working pretty great for me. I think the most challenging part of having a band is having to change some old bad habits. The band is really only a bridge to get you to a healthier lifestyle....you still have to do your part....but that's also one of the biggest rewards. The weight loss is pretty rewarding too, lol. It sucks that you may not have strong family support. But there are a ton of friendly people here that will try and help. I would strongly recommend that you start researching all weight loss surgeries before you decide which, if any, are right for you. Good luck!
  24. Hi All, In Nov of 2009 I attended a lap band seminar and was able to sign up for an appointment in January of 2010. Due to several issues on both the office and my schedule the appointment got pushed back to March of 2010. After a 3 hour wait in the office I was finally seen by the surgeon, he looked at the forms I filled out and seemed to imply I had not tried enough dieting because I only had one listing in the form. The surgeon then proceeded in a very demeaning way to say that I was not a good candidate for lap band and that I would only loose 50 lbs and be stuck unable to get any further weight loss surgery. Now my BMI is over 65, and mostly has been and prior to a couple of years ago I was not unhappy with my weight. But recently I find I cannot move well, getting more and more tired. I have sleep apnea and a varicose issue in my lower legs. I have what I call permanent pregnant woman's back and my lungs are scarred from chronic bronchitis and a bought of pneumonia. I hate the thought of trying fad diets to only have my weight yoyo which even I know is not healthy. Needless to say I was very upset. Now I have spoke with other Lap Band patients who were as heavy or heavier than me and they have lost well over 150 lbs each. If I were to loose 150 lbs that would alleviate a great many of my issues. I have a couple of new Dr's names but due to the rejection I got the first time I tried I am hesitant about trying again. Has anyone been through this???
  25. Hi there Everyone! I have just decided to get the band after thinking about it for years. I just can't go on another diet where I will gain all of the weight back. I am 38 years old and have a life to live that hopefully will include doing sports with my family, (outside of my house!), swimming in front of others without shame and playing with my kids. I just had my sleep study last night, so am groggy and relatively unpleasant right now, but that will pass eventually! I have my psyche eval on Weds and then my nutrition and initial consult on Jan 15th. I am moving to Puerto Rico, so I wanted to get the surgery done before I leave for there. Thank you all for continuing to post on this site. Information is my best cure for worry. I look forward to being a big loser with the rest of you. :tongue2:
