    My Unexpected Playground NSV

I am just over 2.5 years post op, and sometimes we forget how far we have come. Lately I have been struggling a little with body image and my head and NSV's elude me. While the other day, I did something that I never thought I would be able to do. I was at the playground with my children and decided to give the monkey bars a whirl. I am 34 years old and have NEVER been able to go across monkey bars, not even as a child (my weight struggles began in Kindergarten). With some determination, I crossed the monkey bars!! I thought my arms were going to fall off afterwards and I may have pulled a muscle, but I still did it!

    NSV

It's been a long time since I have bought new clothes besides the usual jeans, t-shirts, stretchy pants and shorts because the last time I tried to get something nice to wear to go out, I ended up staying home because everything looked so horrible on me. You see I'm a true lover of fashion and all that goes with it or as my mother used to tell me a real clothes horse! I have so many clothes that broke the rods in 2 closets, have rolling racks, clothes in boxes and enough shoes to open a boutique! At one point after a huge weight loss (gain almost all of it back or I wouldn't be here) I loved clothes so much, I went to work in a high end clothing store just so I could get the discount and I love to dress people! Sad, isn't it? Well anyway, I ordered a couple of dresses since I am schedule for some orthopedic surgery and I wanted something that was easy on, easy off for the hospital. I took a guess at the size and prayed that they would arrive in time not be too small. Guess what? They did come in time and they were TOO BIG!!! Not only that, but the one I really liked look pretty good one me! I quickly ordered a smaller size of the one I liked and now as I sit here I am thinking I probably should have ordered it 2 sizes smaller than just 1. It may not arrive in time for my surgery date and it too may be too big (I kind of hope so), but guess what? I'm so happy about it, I don't care!

That made me smile!!! These are the things that people who are not in our shoes would never understand. I totally get it and I'm smiling HUGE for you!!! So fun!! Keep up the good work!! I have had a couple strange NSV's lately too...the necklace I wear every day hangs into my cleavage now....LOL guess Im losing weight in my neck! And this one was really weird when I noticed it...when I wash my face now I can feel my cheek bones and jaw line. It was an awesome realization when it happened! Keep sharing your Silly NSV's! They are motivational and fun to hear!!

    Biking Banders

Wow, I'm thrilled to see this thread!! One of my NSV goals is to ride the Pinellas Trail in St Pete, FL - 38.2 miles. I've never been an avid biker but I enjoy it immensely. A couple of friends have hitched their star on my wagon and we started training just after Mother's Day, riding 5 miles/day, adding a mile each week. Doesn't sound like much when I see all the stats above but for us - none of us in great shape - it's a thrill. We'll be at 34 miles by the second week of January, then we'll hit the P-trail. Three days of the week we bike our miles, swim 45 minutes, then do aquarobics for an hour, all before 11 am. The other days, we hit the gym for strength training. I don't ever see a day when I will love doing the gym thing but training for this ride with my friends has made it a lot of fun. I use AllSportsGPS for tracking my rides/progress and Pandora is a MUST for the ride! I finally figured out how to make my smart phone do both at the same time!

    Swiming

speaking of swimming, (slightly off topic), I don't float half as well as I used too! It should have been a no brainer, but I nearly choked myself as I flailed about in the pool during my first dip this year. I used to be able to float from my mid chest upward in a 'standing' position in my pool, now I have to paddle to barely get my shoulders above water in the same position! I would call it an NSV, but dang, I really used to like the way I could float so well! Lol, the dang sacrifices we must endure!
  17. Hi all here is a photo of my new size 16 dress from Birsdnest. It's reversible so it's like two dresses in one which I love as I travel a lot with work can't see it but I am wearing cute calf length boots which is a NSV on its own

    Yoga Moves For Big Folks

Try to look for classes or shows that have modified moves. The instructor at a local fitness center where I'm at does that. She is, of course, in excellent shape, but not everyone in the class is, so she always shows at least 2 or 3 different variations of some of the more complex poses for people who aren't as flexible. Don't give up on it though...yoga is my absolute favorite workout. I have come a really long way since I have started doing it and I can get my body into better positions than some of the smaller ladies in my class. I kind of look at it as an NSV Good luck!
  19. Prone Hold

Smashed out a 3 minute prone hold today! NSV for sure 3 months ago I couldnt prone longer than 30 seconds! Now just got to work on press-ups - still cannot even do one!
  21. For many years I looked in the bathroom mirror and saw the same (nonfat) image, but reflections in store windows, shadows cast on the ground and photographs told the truth. It was painful to look at myself and face the truth of my fatness. Now, I still see the same thing in the mirror, but I jump in front of the camera at every opportunity so I can view the real truth. As my body is changing, I can stand to look at my reflection and see the promise of what's to come. Is this a NSV? It sure feels like it. I'll have to dig deep to scrape up a before photo that hasn't been fat cropped, but looking forward to posting pix in a few months! Thank you to everyone on the forum for encouragement and great advice!

    discouraged and depressed

You may want to look at the things you are eating. I am 10 weeks out now and I feel like I eat more than most people do, and I am not eating 1000 cal per day. I get in 80-100+ gm of protein in most days and I eat really low carbs (I try to keep it between 20-30 gm per day but preferably closer to 20 gm). If you are able to get that many calories in but not all of your protein I'm going to guess that you are eating more carbs/fats than you need at this point. Keep working at it, it certainly is a learing process and I am still learing everyday. You are doing great though with your weight loss. I too had a stall but mine started at 10 days out and lasted 2 1/2 weeks. Talk about drive a girl crazy! I totally know how you feel, I felt the same way and I'm sure most of us here have had the same thoughts and feelings. If you are doing what you know you should keep that up but maybe try to change it up a little. I know that when my stall started it was about the time that I was on full liquids/soft foods. I was getting in way more carbs than protein. My doc wouldn't let me start on protein until after two weeks out. Anyway, when I was able to dramatically drop my carbs and really pick up my protein my stall broke. I have had once since then too and I think I'm probably starting another one now. The key is to keep chugging along. This will work. 21 pounds is a great loss, more than I lost in my first month and I have WAY more weight to lose than you do . One other thing, try not to weigh yourself everyday. (I really suck at this part, even in a stall I weigh everyday cause I want to know when it breaks). But I have figured out that when I get on the scale and don't see it moving even when I know I'm doing everything right, I get discouraged. If I can stay away from the scale and I know that I am doing what I am supposed to then in my mind I know it is working and that makes me feel really good. I hope it will you too. When I went through my first stall my body really changed a lot even though the scale didn't. I dropped a pant size almost overnight it seemed like. And people noticed more just all of a sudden. You should measure yourself every so often so you can see how much your measurements are changing even if the scale is being stubborn. Also look for NSV's to keep your spirits up. There is way more to this journey than just what the scale tells you. Keep your head up, you've got this. I'm sure your husband thinks you are one beautiful lady, and even though what he thinks of you is important, you need to BELIEVE you are beautiful even more! Sorry, I think I'm rambling...
