    Lopez? Kelly? Ortiz?

I used Dr Kelly on 4/6/13. I was very impressed! I have not had any complications and am 10 lbs from goal weight. My husband has decided to get sleeved and we will go back to Dr Kelly! Let me know if you have questions. Linda

Any pointers anyone? Please Respond...need encouragement

My husband has Blue Cross Blue Shield and they paid. It has to be presented as a medical issue. We had to give them a five year history from the primary doctor showing he has been over a certain weight for 5 years or more. Plus he has high blood pressure, sleep apnea and diabetes runs in his family. If you have medical issues over your weight, I do not understand how they can turn you down? Did your doctor present the case properly? My husband just had his surgery this month, 8/10. But it took us a good portion of the year to get the packet together for insurance approval. Oh.. one more thing his primary doctor had to write a letter of recommendation as well. Not sure if this helps.

    Surgery "bag" ?

I just had my surgery on 5/4. The things I used in the hospital were my chapstick, my cellphone, cellphone charger, license and insurance card, hair brush and elastic, and a pillow to lay across my abdomen. I wore yoga pants and a loose t-shirt and that was also what I went home in. I was provided with non slip socks, toothpaste and toothbrush, things to shower(i did not shower at the hospital). After my surgery which was at 10:30am, I did not wake up fully until 7pm and that was when I was transferred to my room. I walked around that night but I was in and out of sleep most of the time. The next day I walked around a lot and was ready to be discharged in the afternoon. I didn't even have time to watch t.v. good luck with your surgery!

(Great Recipe *****) 1 cup Peanut Butter (I use no-sugar-added Peter Pan) 1 cup rolled oatmeal -- not the instant stuff 1 cup protein powder (I use Matrix Chocolate, but you can use other flavors) 5 packets Splenda Warm the peanut butter in microwave about 30-40 seconds -- it melts it and makes mixing in the other ingredients much easier. Add the oatmeal, protein powder, and Splenda and mix well. (If needed, you can add a little bit of water to make it easier to mix) Roll into walnut sized balls, refrigerate. Store in fridge in zip-lock baggies. This recipe makes 20-24 balls. Calories: 335 Protein: 59 Carbs: 16 Fat: 3 Notes: I like using the sugar-free and fat-free Coffee Mate creamers, but I often have a problem in which the amount needed to solicit the flavor I want is too rich for my tummy. CHOCOLATE CARAMEL BROWNIE SHAKE (All stages except clear liquids) 2 scoops PD Alpine Chocolate 1 cup ff Lactaid milk 1 shot Torani sf caramel syrup 4 Joseph's sf brownie bites Ice cubes Blend liquid ingredients until smooth, add brownies with ice cubes and pulse until same thickness as a Dairy Queen Blizzard (I use an entire tray of ice cubes). It's important to note that this is not a low-calorie meal. This was yummy, but I would not add the brownie bites in the future -- they add 100 calories and 14g of carbs, which isn't worth it for the minimal flavor boost. Also, I typically use ff Lactaid milk, but dh brought home reduced fat and I didn't realize it. So, the reduced fat milk has 130 calories per cup, versus only 80 for the ff version. The caramel syrup has no nutritional value for a 1-oz. serving. 8. Well, abstract of an article, anyway. Here is a link to it. It compares results of all the major surgeries. I thought you guys might be interested. It may require you to register, but it's free. If you do have to register, it should take you directly to the article afterwards. The authors reviewed all reports published in English journals up until September 2005 that had at least 3 years of follow-up data. It shows that Lap-Band and RNY were statistically equal in the mid-term (>3 years). There weren't any long-term results (>10 years) for the lap-band procedure, but the authors did note this: "Mean %EWL for standard RYGBP (RNY) was higher than for LAGB (lap-band) at years 1 and 2 (67 vs 42; 67 vs 53) but not different at 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7 years (62 vs 55; 58 vs 55; 58 vs 55; 53 vs 50; and 55 vs 51). There was 59 %EWL for LAGB at 8 years, and 52 %EWL for RYGBP at 10 years. Both the BPD+/-DS (biliopancreatic diversion with or without duodenal switch) and the Banded RYGBP (banded bypass) appeared to show better weight loss than standard RYGBP and LAGB, but with statistically significant differences present at year 5 alone. The LL-RYGBP (longlimb bypass) was not associated with improved %EWL."

    3 months post-op and I learned...

I wish my doctors were able to tell me a little more about how hard it might be for you after the band in terms of knowing when you are filled correctly. They don't tell you that you really need to stay on top of them to get your fills to be effective. I am still eating way more than I should and I can definitely eat more than a 1/4 cup of food at one time. Heck, I can still drink a Starbucks tall size (12 oz) latte without blinking. Yes, I've lost 40 pounds but a lot of that was lost before my surgery on low carb. I'm a bit frustrated because I've had 5 fills and I've just finally started to have restriction. Up until now I have not felt anything and I've been feeling like I'm failing this process even though I'm following the rules. I am also doing the alpha-lipoc acid shots along with the Vitamin B-12 shots to help me with energy and I'm still not feeling very energetic. I know it's a learning process but I feel like I'm the one helping my doctors learn how to do this. I just didn't think it was going to be this difficult. On the plus side I'm only down 40 pounds and I hit my mini goal of 235 this past week. This is the lowest weight I can remember in the past 10 years. Next goal is to get below 200. I have been over 200 since I was 12 years old.

    New Year looking better

Let me start by saying Happy New Year. This year will be very different for me. How you ask? Well I got on the scale today and since my first visit to the doctors I have lost 55lbs. Since my surgery date on Oct 23, 2009 I have lost 45lbs. I won't officially change my ticker until I go to the doctors on Jan. 13th. In 2001 I had open heart surgery because I and an aortic aneurysm. I also had a valve replacement. That was 8 1/2 years ago. I am already back down to the weight I was when I had my surgery. I go to visit my cardiologist on Jan. 25th and am very excited to see what is said. I will need to have open heart again in a couple of years because they put a pigs valve in last time, which only lasts for 10 years or so. This time around I will get a mechanical which should last for the rest of my life. 6 months ago my cardiologist said that I really needed to lose the weight because I was taking the chance of dieing on the table or at the least risking infection if I did lose the weight. So here I am. I have lost about 1/4 of my goal weight. So here is my New Years Resolution. I am extremely greatful for the support of my family and friends and everyone on here, but I have come to realize that the only person who is truly going to help me do this, is myself. I want to LIVE. I don't want to die young. So I refuse to let food control me any longer. I will however not give up living. I do realize that this is a lifestyle change but it's not a reason to give up living. Everything in moderation. So if I make a mistake I am NOT going to punish myself for it. I am just going to learn from those mistakes and move along. So 'FOOD' move over because I'm taking over. This is MY life, not yours. Good luck to everyone in 2010. I hope you have as much success as I have had and continue down your path of weight-loss. God bless you all and thanks for being here for me.
  11. I was banded on 9/30/10 and also can eat larger portions than what I like. I am reducing them with each fill, but also becoming hungry 2 hours after I last ate. I think it is just playing with the right fill you need. Try not to compare yourself to others, as it will be hugely discouraging. You will get there! A friend of mine had to have 4-5 months of playing with fills. Now, 11 months later, he is down 101 pounds.
  12. I had mine done June 5 2012. I have lost 98 pounds and have gone from a size 22 to 10 in pants, and a 2xl to a small in shirts. I went with dr. Wade barker. When is your surgery?

    Count down on...

Nope. Could not see myself doing this ever. Couldn't see myself walking to the end of the driveway without pain, stopping or help... 10 feet tall and bulletproof? Yes. Yes. For many reasons, this being one of them. Feel invincible at times -- most times. Thank you. Your opinion and confidence is greatly appreciated Dub. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Bottled Water

I can choke down any water...however I like the Dasani, Ozarka and Smart Water the best. Kroger had the 20 ounce bottles of Smart Water on 10/$10 and you get 5 free. Normally they are $1.50 each..or more..so I bought 30 bottles and I will be going back tonight to get 30 more. I am trying to drink 120 ounces a day so that is 6 bottles a day. I may have to get more...
  15. When I first met my surgeon, I was on 50 units of Insulin daily. I was 256lbs and had had heart bypass surgery years ago and then a stent put in August 2016. Our decision was to go the bypass route due to the diabetes. Due to the Plavix tablet I had to take for a year, I could not have my bypass until now, and I am due to have it on September 22nd. I can't wait. When I saw the Dr yesterday he was delighted that I had lost 34lbs since my last appointment with him and was even more delighted to hear that I have reduced my insulin to just 15 units per day. As I have improved so much, through hard work these past months, he said if I would prefer to have the sleeve he wouldn't be against it. I thought for about 10 seconds, and told him that I still wanted the bypass as I desperately want to get rid of my diabetes and feel this is the best chance I will have. My dad had diabetes and was VERY overweight, and almost lost his leg from ulcers caused by diabetes. He has since died, from complications from the disease. I do know there is no guarantee that my diabetes will disappear, but I have proved already that with diet and exercise I can probably get off the insulin at the very least; Good luck with your decision. You have time to get all the information out there and then to make a very well informed decision with your Doctors help.
  16. The weight loss difference between sleeve and bypass isn't big enough to really make a decision based on that. That last 10 pounds isn't what makes us sick.. it's the first 60. The diabetes, on the other hand, does respond to the greater metabolic impacts of the bypass. To give you a rough idea: 4 diabetics get a sleeve, and 4 get a bypass. 2 of the sleeve diabetics have improvement long term. 3 of the bypass diabetics have improvement long term. Those odds may or may not be a deal breaker for you. Diabetes can frequently be minimized through dietary choices as well, so by time you get surgery AND change your diet, things are bound to be better, regardless.

    Why am I not losing

Your crazy work hours don't help with the weight loss. I'm a nurse who works 12-hour night shifts, so I get it...you have to do what you have to do. You are only 4 weeks out, and I know this is hard but try to have some patience with yourself. Possibly you've hit your first stall. It is only the first of many, so get used to them. They are frustrating, but my surgeon told me some things that help me get through them: Stalls are NECESSARY. They are your body's way of trying to find a new weight setpoint. Without these "adjustments" you would continue to waste away to nothing and eventually die. Muscle weighs more than fat. As you lose fat and exercise, you gain muscle and it may look like you're not losing, but you are losing fat and gaining muscle. Stalls will occur more frequently and last longer the further out you are from surgery. I had a stall that lasted almost 6 weeks, and then I dropped 10 lb in less than 2 weeks, then hit another stall. That's how it goes. You can't let stalls get inside your head and give you an excuse to fall off the wagon. Stay the course, stick with your plan and the scale WILL start moving again! Good luck and don't get discouraged...the surgery DOES work!

    Lap Band Newbie. DOS 10-22-08

Hi Rida, I had surgery 10-30. I must confess I'm not sticking to post-op so well...eating most things pretty well. I've been weighing myself daily unfortunately...but have lost 9 lbs so far. I'm in the Dallas area also. Congratulations on your surgery. Best of luck! Shari

  21. I have some encouragement for you, I was banded in Oct 09, and I thought that if I could get to 150 pounds and size 10 I would be happy, but I have always been overly ambitious and I set my goal at 130. I had used diet pills and Adkins to get down to the mid 130's before but I was still a size 10. Well I am now at 133, I went clothes shopping at 135 and I was scared to try on a size 6 because I would be disappointed if they didn't fit, and they were too big, I ended up buying a size 4! So I decided not to lose the last 5 pounds and maintain at 135 or so. Following the band diet and exercising has brought me back to the size I was when I was 20. Of course there is flabby skin involved now but at least it isn't filled with fat. So the moral of my story is 130 is doable! Find an exercise that you enjoy and follow your eating requirements. Your already 30% of the way there!
  22. Hi! Ive come to this site for encouragement during low moments and I want to join in. I'm Gail, 44, in California and had lap band surgery mid-June of this year. My first fill was last week. I started the process last November and had the surgery June 14. According to the home scale, (which is painfully close to the doctor's scale) I've dropped from 243 in May to 209.5 this morning. I'm 5'4" and my goal is to drop back down into the 130s, where I was for most of my 20s. I've been seriously battling my weight for 14 years and am eager for these pounds and bulges and bags to let loose! Right now, what I'm struggling with most, is battling old habits. I'm a spec. ed. teacher, mom and grad. student and now that school is back in session, I see how much time I spent actually eating every evening. I'm also struggling with exercise right now, too, working it into my schedule and seriously committing to it. I'm also struggling with redefining myself and finding comfort in something more than food. I'm fine during the day, downing Water mixed with Crystal Light and Protein shakes, but it's those hours from 5-11 that may do me in if I don't turn it around. I'd love any advice that anyone may wish to share. I've got 5 CCs in a 10 CC band and feel some restriction. My doctor is conservative and does fills only every eight weeks max. I'm happy to have lost this much, and today had a mild NSV when I realized that a pair of capris I couldn't even get over my butt pre-op were getting a little too loose today, but I'm feeling just a little blue right now, especially as I face my old high caloric habits square in the face. Thanks everyone! I have been soooo inspired by all of you!

    Newbie here

Hello everyone! I'm new here and this is my first post so be gentle.. I am 10 days post op and I'm feeling great! I'm a tad nervous about Christmas, my Doc has allowed me to start mushy foods tomorrow. I'm excited to be eating again (this liquids business is for the birds, seriously). I've been starting to get a little more hungry in the last few days so anything I can chew on sounds good to me right now hehe.. Any tips for my first time eating after surgery, especially since it will be in front of a shmorgishborg of goodies? ~ Happy Holidays! ~
  24. Hi everyone! I was banded on 2/19 and everything went smoothly. The thing is, I was prepared to experience problems drinking, and I haven't. I can still gulp down water( I know this because I awoke thirsty in the night and guzzled water before I remembered my band!) I am also experiencing pain in the port incision( which my nurses said is larger than normal,) I also have bruising around the incision. I tried to go to work yesterday but it was too uncomfortable. I'm on liquids for three weeks and the store bought broth is disgusting to me. Has anyone made their own? I tried it and it was delicious but it sent me right to the bathroom. Any advice/thoughts are appreciated!
