    Keto Rash

I develop a rash on my body Every Time my carb intake drops below 20 for longer than a few weeks. I have logged in MFP for years, and it correlates. Always on the trunk of my body. ( I hadn't even heard of 'keto rash' but assumed it was some sort of inflammatory body reaction). It is a rare phenomenon. If I upped my carb intake by 20 or 30 grams it would go away. I have had it multiple times. It is more annoying than anything else so I will just deal with it this year. It is now annoying than anything else and get a Costco size jar of hydrocortisone cream. I also am going to ask my PCP for a dermatology consult. Currently, I have it on my back. I have had it on my back, chest, stomach and neck. Every body is different and you should always listen to yours and be aware, note changes etc.
  2. If the noodles were covered in sauce, they probably just slid right through your anamosis (especially since you waited 15 minutes)... and then the meatballs went into a (probably) empty pouch. This is why I eat for no more than 10 minutes, then stop. The stomach can empty oh so fast with some foods. Since you are going plant-based, let me recommend bean noodles for pasta. They are basically all protein and fiber. Shoot, even meat-based keto dieters can probably eat them! Be prepared to get full on a much smaller portion. Here is one for sale (I get mine at my grocery store). There is the nut. info on down the page. https://thrivemarket.com/explore-cuisine-organic-black-bean-pasta-spaghetti-shape?utm_source=google&utm_medium=pla&ccode=FIRST3&ccode_force=1&utm_medium=pla&utm_source=google&utm_campaign=Shopping_Food_Beverages&utm_content=854183006003&utm_term=google-pla_na&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI6uCJ4qvt1gIVAVqGCh3kbwMWEAQYASABEgIaK_D_BwE

    January 2020 Surgery Date

Thank you so much for the encouragement. Makes me feel much better to hear that this stall isn’t unusual. I bought keto sticks and I’m actually in moderate Ketosis with no weight loss this week so that really bothered me. I’ll just keep doing what I’m doing and know that it has to go down eventually. Congratulations, again!!
  4. @JessiG I'm having the same issue. So I have a story in mind that I am going to tell my clients and others. Everyone in my life knows I have struggled and am always trying some sort of diet. most every0ne knows I also suffer from joint pain and high blood pressure, etc. I don't lie well and I HATE lying but here is my story: my surgery is August 23 and I'm starting to let people know that after my last summer trip I've decided to join Lindora weight loss center ( it's a place I've done before ) so I know how the program works and I can answer questions. pretty much keto diet, but you have to be accountable everyday by going in and weighing yourself and pee on a stick to see if your body is in Ketois. then you get a "B12" shot ( which I'm not sure that is really what it is) LOL. Preparing my friends up front and letting them know that I'm taking a break from the social events for awhile so I CAN get on track without distractions and if they are my friends and clients they will understand and be supportive. Again, this is my story. whether it works or not... I shall see. Good luck. I'm in the same boat as well.
  5. My surgery is also scheduled for 2/24. Pre-op diet for me starts this Thursday. I’m so tired of yo-yo dieting, fasting, low carb, high carb, low fat, keto, etc. Getting ready for a new start! Good luck for surgery. You got this. We got this!

    Going into week 5

Hello everyone! I havent had my sleeve yet. Im scheduled for Aug. 16th. However, My Sister & 1 of my daughters have! They have told me their storys of their pros & cons of their post op diets. So I've started to do more research & I found that Ketogenics might be a good eating program FOR ME, to try now & after my surgery. Check out Dr Eric Berg on youtube under keto diet. He is very informative & explains things that are easy to understand! For Example: he mentions how Apple Cider Vinegar helps to put your body back to it's natural Ph balance which helps with weight loss, constipation, etc. Most of you may already know about the benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar. I did too but the way he explains it was way more informative!! Amazing info![emoji106] So check him out. You just might loose your frustrations! Sent from my SM-T530NU using BariatricPal mobile app

    Breakfast ideas?

When I moved on from the liquid phase I started with Oikos Triple Zero yogurt, farina cereal with almond milk, sweetener & cinnamon. During the soft food stage, I added scrambled eggs. When I moved on to the modified regular diet, I had eggs with other cooking methods, high protein/ low carb bagels with light cream cheese, oatmeal with mashed banana or sweeter & cinnamon. I have also had protein waffles & pancakes with sugar-free syrup. I recently purchased the keto bread from Aldi and had that toasted with egg & cheese for the first time today. I often still start the day with a protein shake, just to make sure I get that protein in. I think I want to start making smoothies with some fruits, veggies, & added protein now that I am getting close to 3 months out. I hope you get some good ideas! It is helpful to hear what others eat!

    Aetna, BCBS or United Healthcare???

I have BCBS of Illinois and they covered everything but $1500, and my secondary covered $1200 of that. So I only had $300 out of pocket. They approved my surgery within 48 hours of my surgeon's office submitting everything. From my 1st appt to my surgery date was 2 1/2 months. BCBS only required 1 pre op and 1 post op nutritionist appt, 1 psych eval, approval letter from my neurologist (because I have MS), approval letter from my PCP, having tried at least 2 methods of weight loss in the past (my PCP knew about me doing keto and also low/no calorie and put that in the approval letter). So it was a fast and painless process. My surgeon's office wanted the blood work and EKG before surgery. BCBS approved every test with no issues.
  9. Hey there! I was wondering if I could get some feedback from individuals who have combined bariatric surgery with the ketogenic diet, and what your progress has been with it. Specifically wondering if you've seen it maximize your weight loss.
  10. I am so happy to hear some of you guys have lost so much weight on the liquid diet, my dietitians said, I can have soup and protein shake, she also said, I can use Atkins or keto meal replacement. I am on keto shakes and soup. Jello and vitamin water. It’s working well. Good luck to everyone.

    Poll: How many carbs?

This is only hypothetical right now. I would plan on getting between 20-30g of net carbs per day. They will obviously fluctuate. I know that I can steadily maintain at that level pre-op (cals around 1200-1500). So I'm gonna cross my fingers that by reducing my calories/fats to the level that I'm between 600-800cals/day and protein around 74g daily, carbs between 20g-30g net with a goal of 20g of fiber per day, that I will be able to lose weight...but it's very theoretical right now. I plan on getting my fiber from benefiber, greens blended into protein smoothies, nuts/seeds, a tiny bit from berries maybe even an occasional ounce or two of GS apple with peel blended into my protein smoothie. But this might be pie-in-the-sky planning. I know a lot of ketoneers and low carbers don't place much stock in fiber, but being post-meno 53+ female, I found by trial and error that my keto lifestyle/weight loss did better with slightly lower fat, and slightly higher fiber/leafy greens. Think it may be tied to thyroid function, the lower I went on carbs, the slower my thyroid became.

    AMAW/CAMAW - Let's do this thang!

breakfast this morning on Day 1. Or should I say Brunch, cuz I just ate it. Turned out to be one of my Psylli Egg McBiscuits The biscuits are one of my creations and are totes legal for CAMAW! Warning this biscuit is a total gut bomb. You have to have ZERO swallowing issues and be fully hydrated BEFORE eating it! I used different ingredients for this one, but you can read the cooking instructions here on my old - now defunct blog. http://fluffychixcook.com/egg-fast-breakfast-biscuit-low-carb-keto-breakfast-yum/
  13. Okay..confession! I brush my teeth twice a day and use mouthwash and i chew gum a lot...and yet my poor hubby has been complaining that my breath smells....GROSE! No matter what i do..ever since the second day of this pre op diet.. i have had the nastiest taste in my mouth and my breath smells like i was a dog in my past life... So how do you deal with this Keto breath? Any thoughts on what to try? Short of chewing gum till my jaw hurts.
  14. I did that along the way. My therapist recommended doing one a week so it’s more like a cheat meal than a freak out. Than I could enjoy the meal and not feel guilt. I get really sick on Keto (which is what my preop liquid diet was) so I decided to start Jan 2 eating keto food so that I can get over the keto flu before going back to work. On Jan 13 I started liquid and it went really well. My surgery was Jan 27, so I’m a week out tomorrow. My doctor said my liver looked really good, but I had been doing keto for almost a month (he has us do keto to shrink our liver). I say all that to say this- BE CAREFUL. Going crazy over food will make you feel deprived when you start liquid. Say goodbye and make peace with it but don’t binge.

Favorite Sugar free or alternative foods?

Forget snacks entirely unless they are protein or vegetable. They grease the slippery slope to regaining what you have lost. I speak from experience. I am approaching RNY revision and I will not make the same mistakes again. The pre-op food plan and the (clear/full liquid/puree) stages post op while we are not getting hungry give us the opportunity to establish a new way of eating. If we seek sugar-free or keto snacks we are merely making some substitutes for the OLD way of eating. It's too easy to find ourselves eating sugared and carbohydrate snacks and food when we don't happen to have the "-free" type. Just because substitute snack foods are sold on bariatric sites does not mean they are good for us. If we are wise we will ignore those products. Eat whole foods, fresh or frozen vegetables and fruits, quality poultry and meat products. Avoid sugar, sugar substitutes, wheat/flour products, and processed foods. We can get plenty of tasty food to eat with these choices. I encourage you to obtain and read these two books by Dr. Matthew Weiner: A Pound of Cure and The Bariatric Guide and Cookbook. There are lots of other bariatric cookbooks available, too, including some for Air Fryers, InstaPots, and CrockPots. These will help you learn your new way of eating.

    Bypass but with keto

True keto is high fat, moderate protein, low carb or ultra low carb. So I think most bariatric patients don't really hit the actual macros to be considered real keto. We're told to do lower fat, higher protein and complex carbs only if we're still hungry after we eat our protein and veggies - well that's a generalization, it does vary widely. But I think weight loss patients do low carb if anything at all but very few do actual keto.

    June 2020 surgeries

I have to keep at or below 129kg (284lbs), but otherwise, there has been no specific diet that they've told me to be on. I got down to 124kg, but I am, as of this morning, back up to 133kg, so I am kind of in a panic. I know it's mostly water weight, but I'm terrified that they will send me home on the day of if I am not where I am supposed to be. Since my original date was postponed due to the pandemic, I have been messing up my personal diet pretty badly. I am "good" for a few days and then I get overwhelming stress and turn right back to food. I plan on going to a therapist after surgery to help find better ways to cope. I will probably switch to a keto diet if I don't see a dramatic amount of weight loss over the next few days here..
  18. So what did your Drs advise you do as far as carbs? Mine says that they don't really limit carbs and that they believe that carbs will give you energy and then you will be more active which will then lead to weight loss. They believe that balance is the key. Looking though through threads and youtube, most of the people seem to be on a low carb diet like keto without the added fat. I do want to be successful but if I could be successful and still eat more carbs I think I would be happier. Carbs are the only thing I am craving but I'm only a month out from surgery and carbs to me seem to be a slippery slope and I'm afraid that if I allow myself to eat carbs then I'll start eating them too much and snacking on crackers or something. Since surgery I have limited myself to 40 or less carbs per day and yesterday I had my one month visit with the dietitian and he said I needed to up my carbs to around 30 per meal. So what did your plan say about carbs and if you were allowed carbs, did you lose weight fast or was is slower? The speed of weight loss I know is individual, but if it seems to be a factor I want to know.

    Fast Food Questions

I think the idea that you could never eat out again is not only unrealistic but sounds incredibly depressing. There is a social aspect to eating out that I feel is very important. It's all about making the right choices. I'm about 2 1/2 months post op with the Sleeve and I've eaten out a handful of time. I made smart, choices and focused on protein first. I follow a modified Keto diet as much as I can so when I eat out I look at different websites and try to follow their advice and guidelines. I have eaten fast food once. It was today actually. I went to Wendy's and ordered a single burger with no bun. They put it in a lettuce wrap for me but I chose to eat it with a knife and fork. I have the tomato and a little bit of mustard on it. I ate about 2/3 of the patty and had 4 of my mother's fries. I used my fitness tracker and a Keto website to figure out the nutrition facts. This will be my large meal for the day. My NUT has me on 800-1000 calories a day, 100 grams of protein and suggests my carbs stay below 50 grams but isn't steadfast on calorie counting. I'm well on track today still at under 600 calories for the day and only 20 g of carbs.
  20. I find all of the research and statistics to be interesting; however, I still believe that it comes down to an individual's commitment and perseverance to changing his/her relationship with food and finding a way of eating that is sustainable and that supports maintaining and healthy weight more so that which procedure he/she chooses. I weighed 400 pounds when I started my journey. I never wanted the bypass and insisted on the sleeve from the very beginning. While the NP did talk statistics, she and the surgeon were very supportive. I have lost over 100% of my excess weight (I am below goal), and have maintained for several months beautifully. There is no reason to think will regain because I have no intention of not following a keto way of eating, and I always keep my calories below 2000. In my experience the people that don't lose their excess weight and/or regain do (or don't) do so because of the choices they make around food and drink. I realize that there are exceptions to this, but that has been the case so many times on BP and is definitely the case with most of the people I know that have had one procedure or the other. Still, I do find the research interesting...

    The pace race

In my own previous weight loss experience, I lost 100lbs over 18 monthts doing keto. 250 to 150, and I had virtually no loose skin. I only started working out at 15 months, and had already lost 75lbs so it wasn't because of working out. Slower weight loss may be frustrating, but in my experience it is better in the long run!

    Pre-Op Diet, Two weeks out!

Welcome to the wide & varied pre & post surgical plans. 🙂 I was put on a keto plan before surgery. My surgeon puts different patients on different pre surgical diets. A friend was on the all shake diet & her friend was on the two shakes & one meal version yet we had the same surgeon. I think he does it based on a number of factors: starting weight, pre existing health status, weight loss/gain history, etc. Maybe your surgeon is the same. I wouldn’t be concerned, just enjoy still having a variety of food choices available to you. All the best with your surgery. PS - Best to avoid fruit juice too as it has a high sugar content. Natural sugars but still sugar & calories. It takes several pieces of fruit to make a glass of juice but you would sit down & eat the sane number of pieces of fruit in one go. Plus it lacks a lot of the essential nutrients a whole piece of fruit does. When you can introduce fruit into your diet again go for whole fruit not juice.

    Bypass but with keto

I think the South Beach diet format is far better than keto and sustainable for life. South Beach can become a way of life.

    Bypass but with keto

some people who are a ways out do Keto, but this early out, you have to make sure you're meeting your protein requirements and you can only handle so much food, so it might be challenging to do a strict Keto diet.

A normal day of food post op?

I am just now at 3 months. Everyone is really different with this honestly. I had a tough time-just passing Thanksgiving, I am getting a bit more used to foods I can handle but I will be honest and say there are a lot of limits. Some days are still worse then others-Doc said that's normal for the first year. I try to eat my normal keto diet from before but still have to add Atkins shakes. Cold does better for me then hot so I will sometimes freeze a drink in a bowl for lunch and have that. It definitely helps. Turkey meatballs are my staple these days if I can mix it with a little sauce. They say bread is difficult but I will have at least one or two slices of Aldi zero carb bread- it gives me a lot of fiber and some protein. I toast it then put either the turkey meatballs (smushed and mixed) onto the bread then let it get a bit moist or, if it's a good day, I can try some egg and then chicken that's been boiled with keto barbecue sauce (just a tad-it has about 3 net carbs). Sometimes I can handle deli meat and cheese seems to be fine for me if I really chew well and take tiny bites. I also have my tablespoon or two of genepro for the missing protein. Veggies are still really hard for me but I do take a v8 green and I have been trying little bits of apple. Banana was pretty hard and other fruits can be a toss-up depending on the day. I started to mix a bit of sweet potato mashed with almond milk and some of my boiled chicken together for some meals and peas mashed can be ok if I can handle it. Popcorn that's air-popped is doable for me and seeming the easiest to take down in small amounts (no butter or salt-just plain). I will take it as a treat- a cup or so. I also live on the sugar-free popsicles with 15 calories when my store has it in stock. Tillapia works for me some days as well if it's not baked or fried but boiled in the bag. My calories are still only at around 800 on good days but I'm exercising well and labs are showing the genepro is doing well with the protein. Probably not the best example for you as you can be better able to handle varieties then I am right now but it's where I'm at. Had bypass Sept 1.
