Stalling right now

I eat Keto so I might fat fast for a 1-3 days but mainly, if you keep doing the same thing, you will lose eventually. Your body has to take breaks, you can't really make it lose if it doesn't want to unless you have been eating off plan. -
Anyone's primary doctor was against the operation?
Kia kaha replied to Starky's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The first GP I talked to was against surgery, she said that it didn’t address the psychological issues of overeating and if I eat emotionally it would be extremely hard for me to cope with my emotions afterwards. She recommended a ‘health coach’ and keto. Roll forward a year, couldn’t find a qualified health coach, lost weight with keto and realised that it’s not sustainable. I have at this point nearly put back all the weight I lost last year. Spoke to another GP who I know is diabetic himself, he said absolutely , surgery is the only way to lose weight permanently, he gave me a referral. As a postscript I saw GP. Number one in the car park, she is a lovely human, but you couldn’t fail to notice that her own bmi had shot up over the last year, maybe she shouldn’t heed her own best advice. -
The gas pain was only for about an hour. I have some soreness in the area where the hernia was repaired, but that's not very bad. Nothing Tylenol can't keep at bay. I'm allowed to eat pureed foods, but I'm really not hungry. Ate some mashed potatoes & gravy yesterday, it tasted good, but I only ate it because I thought I should not because I really wanted it. Drinking 1/2 a low carb slim fast now. I guess knowing I can have other stuff makes it less desirable. LOL. I haven't really been hungry since I started the pre op Clear liquids. I think when the ketones kick in the hunger wanes. After my surgery I could actually smell my keto breath. Yuck!

Will WLS work if the problem isn't overeating?

It looks like there have been a lot of ppl who don't read. I eat 1000 calories or less and weigh 280. I was bulimic for years. I got the band and list then regained even though I was under 1000 caliries a day. I'm considering the surgery because the doctor says it changes your body's set point. My fear isn't that I won't lose, but that once again I'll regain because my body really wants to stick at this weight. I eat a whole foods diet, not a SAD. I do keto. I just don't lose. Sent from my SM-G935P using the BariatricPal App One thing I learned through this process is that my obesity is at least partly due to under eating as much as to overeating. Overeating is my bodies response to under eating (skipping meals, restricting, etc.). One of the biggest gifts of this program for me so far is a deeper understanding of nutrition and what my body really needs. Eating under 1000 calories in a day is no longer an option for me. Of I go over 1000, even on slow small increments, I gain. Ive been on many diets with many "coaches". I've been through different nutrition classes while in training for holistic health, while in college, and with docs. I understand the metabolic system. My doctor recently ran labs and told me how surprised she was to see sugars, and everything else perfect. I realize that for most people 1000 is not enough. I apparently have a really efficient metabolism. It doesn't take much to make me go. Sent from my SM-G935P using the BariatricPal App -

Renkoss replied to WitchySar's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
The OP stated that she does not overeat, that she doesn't eat 1000 calories a day, but chooses the wrong foods to eat (junk food, fried food, pizza, etc.). Just wanted to clarify that. Also, there are many reasons people cannot lose weight. I was one of them. I am diabetic, and severely insulin resistant. This surgery helped to reset my body and my blood sugar is coming down nicely. Yes, I'm still using insulin, but not nearly as much as I was. Hopefully as more weight comes off, the need for the insulin will continue to decrease and eventually I can be without it. I ate keto for a few years, exercised until I continually kept hurting myself, and didn't lose any weight. However, my blood sugar did respond for a bit, but then it just kept going higher and higher. I cannot afford for damage to occur to my organs, so I finally saw WLS as my last option. Now I wish I would have done it years ago. I do have metabolic syndrome, and you can do everything right and still not lose weight. Then it is just frustrating and depressing, to say the least. -

Thinning it down might help make it so I can eat it post-op since they aren't as worried about the carbs after. So I will definitely try that. I love keto chow, or at least I did when I was doing the keto diet a few years back. I only tried the shakes though. I might have to look into those soups, ty! -

It is weird for me. I can almost eat anything, just in super small amounts. I had turkey, yam and potatoes (about 1 tbsp of each) and even a bit of pecan pie without the crust. However, I made a keto rum cake to take with me, and I took a small taste of that the day before. I was trying out the recipe. I got the foamies for the first time, from just a small taste. At this point I think my stomach just has a mind of its own and I just have to listen. Most days I just eat eggs, tuna fish, protein shakes, protein water. I had a meatball for dinner yesterday. -

I have been a little MIA for a while trying to finish up my final graduate school classes-and I finally graduated! In the midst of the last year I've had some regain and trying to lose it. i'm also dealing with a ball out of left field- a possible cancer diagnosis. I have had a very persistent ovarian cyst for about 15 months. I've changed forms of birth control during that time and the thing has grown and shrunk multiple times. My Ob-Gyn has been very appropriate, following the ACOG rules and seeing me every few months and doing many MANY ultrasounds. Now it's changing and I'm having some strange symptoms that she (nor I) will dismiss- and Friday I had a CA-125 blood test. Because I'm a nurse and going through Nurse Practitioner education right now I have access to very professional scientific databases of research. The research has shown over and over that a Ketogenic diet seems to show great results in various types of cancer treatment. This has to do with the fact that insulin/glucose cycle feeds tumors and on a keto approach you drop your glucose intake and stabilize insulin resistance... So today i'm doing some cooking and tomorrow the hubs and I will embark on a full blown Keto journey. i'm a bit nervous because without a gall bladder i'm sure i'll have some dumping syndrome, but in any case my doctor ALSO fully endorsed this approach when I saw her-which I was happy about (since many doctors look at you with glazed eyes when you mention any change in eating). I know that many bariatric folks don't do keto but this is much more than a weight loss attempt right now- it could be my life on the line... Thank you for letting me ramble. I would just like to ask each of you-regardless of which religious/spiritual approach you take, to please pray for me/send me positive thoughts, vibes, etc. I really need them and will update as I know more in the next 2 weeks.

How many calories a day should I be eating?
Creekimp13 replied to Yo-yo girl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I get 60+ grams of protein a day, but try to get at least half from plant based healthy carbs (beans, nuts, whole grain breads, peas, lentils, seeds, protein pasta, potatoes, oatmeal) Am definately NOT a keto person and I don't count carbs. I DO, however avoid high glycemic carbs that cause rebound hunger. I eat every little sugar or processed carbs. (if I eat them...they're part of my 75 calories of "sweets"...and I don't always eat them. Nice to know they're there, though!) I keep my meats incredibly low fat. Use olive oil or avocado for almost all fat. I eat mostly fish, chicken breast and extremely lean steak if I eat meat. I LOVE a veggie burger, mycoprotein meat substitutes, etc. I'm a fruit bat. Love fruit and eat a LOT of fruit. Am particularly fond of dried figs for sweeteners in stuff lately. Natural sugar+high quality fiber is a win for me. I eat watermelon and strawberries a lot. I do fermented foods and foods with fiber like split peas...cause my microbiologist kid keeps telling me I need to build good gut microbiota. I love culinary zing. Ginger, garlic, five spice, red and green curry paste, garlic, balsamic, seseame seed oil, fresh herbs, miso, flavor! I do drink coffee, I use Splenda a lot, and sometimes I bank my 75 naughty calories for a few days and splurge on something really naughty like my mom's poppy seed bread, or something decadent when I'm out to eat with hubby. I eat my junk food out of the house, with a witness...which I know is weird, but helps me stay accountable. An almost daily staple in my diet is homemade veggie soup: -
It's true.. fruit can be a bit high in carbs for some plans. 1/2 a medium apple has about 10g net carbs. If you're keto, it's too many. But, you asked about low fat, and now low carb too? What exactly does your nut expect you to eat?

I have to keep at or below 129kg (284lbs), but otherwise, there has been no specific diet that they've told me to be on. I got down to 124kg, but I am, as of this morning, back up to 133kg, so I am kind of in a panic. I know it's mostly water weight, but I'm terrified that they will send me home on the day of if I am not where I am supposed to be. Since my original date was postponed due to the pandemic, I have been messing up my personal diet pretty badly. I am "good" for a few days and then I get overwhelming stress and turn right back to food. I plan on going to a therapist after surgery to help find better ways to cope. I will probably switch to a keto diet if I don't see a dramatic amount of weight loss over the next few days here..

Glad to hear some people are doing the keto diet as I wanted to do that for the last 20 pounds. I was a little concerned about that seriously high fat in it but it sounds like it's OK.

I did keto for a bit, but my doc told me not to cut out any food group, or I might end up lacking important vitamins or minerals (supplements notwithstanding). So I'm just sticking to the old - but admittedly boring - maxim of 'everything in moderation'. I don't have an addictive personality, so that's OK for me (but I can see that it wouldn't suit everyone). -
Thanks guys! I'll look into this Keto diet and, although I recognise it's a poor habit, I think I'll use them as a crutch in the first week of the 2 week protein shake pre-op diet. Will have to ensure I drink a lot of water!

A normal day of food post op?
ichabodny replied to TrueNorth1's topic in Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery Forum
I am just now at 3 months. Everyone is really different with this honestly. I had a tough time-just passing Thanksgiving, I am getting a bit more used to foods I can handle but I will be honest and say there are a lot of limits. Some days are still worse then others-Doc said that's normal for the first year. I try to eat my normal keto diet from before but still have to add Atkins shakes. Cold does better for me then hot so I will sometimes freeze a drink in a bowl for lunch and have that. It definitely helps. Turkey meatballs are my staple these days if I can mix it with a little sauce. They say bread is difficult but I will have at least one or two slices of Aldi zero carb bread- it gives me a lot of fiber and some protein. I toast it then put either the turkey meatballs (smushed and mixed) onto the bread then let it get a bit moist or, if it's a good day, I can try some egg and then chicken that's been boiled with keto barbecue sauce (just a tad-it has about 3 net carbs). Sometimes I can handle deli meat and cheese seems to be fine for me if I really chew well and take tiny bites. I also have my tablespoon or two of genepro for the missing protein. Veggies are still really hard for me but I do take a v8 green and I have been trying little bits of apple. Banana was pretty hard and other fruits can be a toss-up depending on the day. I started to mix a bit of sweet potato mashed with almond milk and some of my boiled chicken together for some meals and peas mashed can be ok if I can handle it. Popcorn that's air-popped is doable for me and seeming the easiest to take down in small amounts (no butter or salt-just plain). I will take it as a treat- a cup or so. I also live on the sugar-free popsicles with 15 calories when my store has it in stock. Tillapia works for me some days as well if it's not baked or fried but boiled in the bag. My calories are still only at around 800 on good days but I'm exercising well and labs are showing the genepro is doing well with the protein. Probably not the best example for you as you can be better able to handle varieties then I am right now but it's where I'm at. Had bypass Sept 1. -
I did a low carb diet for the first 6-7 months of my journey; that is when I lost most of my weight. I started with less than 30g per day then went to 50g per day as I exercised more. I can't say I was addicted to carbs but they were my go to food; I'd eat bowls of Pasta and bowls of rice, so I opted to cut them out, temporarily. I found a lot of good low carb/keto diet recipes so they really helped keep me sane. Try looking for some and see what you can find. There are thousands out there. Nowadays carbs are the least of my worries My life revolves around calories in vs. calories out and my carb count varies per day. Some days it's at 100g, other days 150g. I am mindful of them but low carb has gone out the window; I feel much better working out when I eat carbs. My weight loss has slowed, but I'm saying that's because I am almost at goal and I don't expect the weight to fall off as rapidly as it did. Also, why are you cutting out Peanut Butter? PB is a perfect protein/fat source when doing a low-carb diet, not sure why you think it can't be eaten. As for ketchup and BBQ sauce, low carb variations do exist, do some Googling and you'll find plenty Hopefully Elfie sees this post; she is the queen of low carbing.

I bought a cookbook called Southern Keto and it has an awesome taco soup recipe in it. I am leaning towards soft foods though. I made it and then blended it down to pureed. Soooo good. Making it again this week. My family eats it not blended. I am also making a recipe from pinterest right now. Look at soft foods and then blend. -
So I can't stand light mayo or light salad dressings and I'm not sure I'll be a fan of Greek yogurt in its place. I get to start week 3 tomorrow and I'm so dang excited becuase I plan to make egg salad (I raise backyard chickens so can't wait to finally get back to eating their butt nuggets! 🤣), chicken salad, and tuna salad and I was planning on using regular mayo. My question as a new post bariatric patient is future plans with this eating lifestyle. My nutritionist said I won't be eating carbs for a while and even when I do start to introduce them, she said a lot of bariatric patients don't tolerate much of them. I was thinking low carb would be best for me as I have done it before but how would that work if I need to do low fat too? I've done keto before and to me, it's sooo much easier than low fat so I'm curious what others are doing successfully. Is there a way to find a happy medium between low carb and low fat?

I saw somewhere on this site a list of soup/broth but I can't remeber where because I've looked at soo many threads. Thats so nice of your co worker and so supportive! My husband told me he for sure was not going on the liquid diet with me. I told him he couldn't or he would die because he's so skinny. He went on the keto diet with me last year to be supportive but he couldn't keep going so I think he's more afraid of diets now. He's never been over weight, so he really doesn't have any experience, but I loved the support. It really does make a difference. -

I've used Factor 75 and it's been awesome. They have keto, paleo, low calorie, "regular", etc... And you choose all your meals and you can choose how many meals you get each week. They make things so much easier. 1 meal (which I would have completely laughed at before my surgery) actually lasts for 2 meals. So getting the 3 or 4 meal box (cheaper options) lasts a full week. If I get the 6 meal box and choose 3 dinners and 3 breakfasts, that lasts me all week. I do a homemade protein shake for lunch everyday, so it works out well (I do the keto Arbonne shakes and add things like triple seeds, avocado, fruit, mct oil, almond milk, almond butter, etc to them). I've loved it. And I can eat what I want on my schedule. -
All we can do is pay our money, take our chances, and trust the sources that seem most reputable to us. Our ancestors, the great apes, are not meat eaters. They're fruit, plant fat, and vegetation eaters. Once in a while...they eat eggs, insects, an occasional meat meal (less than 3% of their diet) But mostly, they eat fruit, nuts, seeds, and tons of vegetation. And they get a ton of exercise and sleep. (And of course, FIRE and cooking marked a huge change in nutrition and gut lengths as early hominids needed less large intestine and more small intestine to get the most nutrition out of pre-broken down foods) Sorry about the anthropology rant. LOL. But I guess it is the rant board. Interestingly, the people on the planet who live the longest....eat the Mediterranean diet...which is nutritionally similar.....lots of plant fats, fruits and veggies, legumes, lower protein. They also get more exercise and sleep than the statistical norm. Diet will be controversial until the end of time. We all have our prejudices. I'm so far up the Mayo Clinic Diet's butt...I can take it's temperature. LOL. We all have our favorites. I know you're a Keto Disciple, Fluff, and I'm not trying to change you. If it works for you, awesome. To each, their own.

Keto breath.. unfortunately breath spray or similar is the only thing that seems to help. Hopefully you don’t also get the keto rash, which is no fun!
