I was the same way and, to some extent, still am. My bypass surgery was 5/24. I lived on Oikos greek yogurt for about 5 or 6 weeks because other foods, no matter how pureed (YUCK!!!) or how gently cooked, would get stuck right in the middle of my chest. I would generally do a lot of pacing and deep breathing until the pain and the danger of throwing up had passed. My doctor said it was perfectly normal and would get better with a little time. As usual, he was correct. I still can't eat most meat, though some have started going down without pain. It gets a little better each day. I rarely ever ate because I enjoyed food but more because of stress, boredom and habit. Foods I used to enjoy, like pizza, don't do it for me any more. I don't even particularly like french fries now. Never thought that would happen. I do still miss my sliced apples. I will continue to try them occassionally. Just give it time. As you heal, you will be able to enjoy a broader range of food. -

speaking of leftovers... Mr. brought home a doggy bag of a souvlaki meal for me, but i really only wanted the pita. so i cut up what he brought home, sprinkled some olive oil and spices on it and air-fried it to crunchy. ate it with some homemade tzatziki (greek yogurt, minced garlic, olive oil, lemon juice and salt and pepper) ate it all. p.s. i logged it as naan on MFP cuz it was alot thicker than a standard pita! 101 calories for it all. -

I had the worst time with food aversion. It took me about four months to get over it. I couldn't eat chicken, eggs, pork… I was thankfully okay with greek yogurt so that was my main source of protein. It does go away, it just takes time. You could also have what they call "keto breath". I had that and it was NASTY. -

I am 1 week po as of yesterday. I have been feeling the same! Two small sips of soup or protein drink are fine but three makes me feel sick. Today I am keeping Oikos Triple Zero Greek Yogurt at my desk and taking a couple SMALL bites every 30 mins or so. It has 15 grams of protein. I also fine it impossible to reach my protein goal and probably am only getting 30 IF that. But, this too shall pass. I'm down 18.6 lbs and wearing a shirt that was tight before so yay! lol -

I was also traumatized by the pureed stage! So glad to know I wasn't alone. I did read a comment that said "Don't forget about cottage cheese!" I'd rather eat pureed chicken. And that ain't happening. I am just a little over 2 months out from my gastric bypass. I am still having quite a bit of trouble swallowing, quite frankly, most meats. I have had most success with very thinly shaved deli ham and turkey. I know I'm supposed to be eating 60-90 grams of protein each day, but I'm not getting it from meat. Fortunately, I love the high-protein Greek yogurt. It is saving my life right now. -

I usually make a spicy coleslaw (don't come for me yet) Shredded coleslaw mix A little light mayo Pickle juice Pickled diced jalapenos and a little juice Red Onion Grape Tomatoes Salt/Pepper Slice onion thin, half your grape tomatoes. Dump in bowl with coleslaw veggies. In separate bowl whisk together a little bit of light mayo, pickle juice, and your diced pickled jalapenos and black pepper. Add as much jalapeno as you want, but please keep in mind the longer this sits, the hotter it gets. I usually make the day before and stir a few times to let it sit and flavor develop. Salt/Pepper as you like, but I suggest tasting it after it sits for several hours. I don't measure, so therefore, no measurements. The mayo/juice mixture should be fairly runny, so it is easy to mix in. You want mostly pickle juice with a little mayo to make it creamy. I have no clue if you could sub greek yogurt as I have never tried it. -

I see my dietician in August along with my surgeon and I also will be getting bloodwork done. Thank you for the tips/suggestions. The 1200 calories was a day that I had. The example wasn't the 1200 calorie day. I'm gonna take out bread or if I want bread/bread type products, just have half. I don't eat bread related foods every day. I try to stay away from junkfood. Alot of the times it's always in my face and I live with family, I've mentioned before to put it in a place where it's not in my face. It's always usually on the counter. Right now, yogurt is still turning my stomach just of the thought about it, but hopefully I can add it back in my diet. I love cheesesticks, protein drinks with 20g of protein, jello I need to make some, been loving cherries lately and apples. Have to pick up some strawberries. Does anyone eat and then at the 15 minute mark they get sick of what they're eating? So you stop? I have some recipes for bariatric meals, I need to whip that back out and make a grocery list. Plus I also follow a lot of people on tik tok and youtube. I also need to get back to eating egg, tuna or chicken salad again. What do you eat it with? Vegetables? -

it may look like mashed potatoes and beef with spices, but it's actually greek yogurt and dates...with spices lol. ever since someone on here mentioned they put black pepper on thier yougurt years ago, i have since preferred my yogurts to be more savory than sweet. i often put other "uncommon" stuff on my yogurts: roasted garlic, carmelized onions, anchovies, cucumbers, bacon, olive oil.. 228 calories for this one. ate it all. -

pretty hungry this AM so whipped up a "breakfast cheese quesadilla" with a side of a bit of greek yogurt for dipping. I usually have sour cream for quesadilla dipping, but u know what? greek yogurt does the same (if not better!) job 401 calories for it all. -

I like roasted edamame and chickpeas for a crunchy snack once and a while. They are a bit calorie dense but healthier than chips. They also give you a boost of protein (especially the edamame) and fiber. Low fat/ fat-free high protein yogurt is a great choice. Low fat cheese (I like the babybel). Raw veggies with dip. The dip you'll make is fat-free plain Greek yogurt and dry ranch dressing powder to taste. Great snake and another source of protein. For a treat, bryers ice cream makes a carb smart version that's pretty tasty, i get the fudge bars, which are around 60 calories, but limit that. Sugar-free pudding, jello, and popsicles are better. Another tasty treat is sugar-free redi whip with strawberries. Eggs are great for breakfast and so versatile: add a bit of reduced fat cheese or turjey sausage or low fat ham, make a crustless quiche, or boil; the ideas are endless. Tuna/chicken/egg salads are great for lunch or a quick dinner; just mix with low-fat mayo and whatever else you like. When I make them, I do enough for a few days and have lunch already made for the next day or two. If you do decide to eat pasta or rice, opt for whole wheat or protein pasta and brown rice on occasion. We had Italian the other night, and I literally only had 1/4 a cup of whole wheat rigatoni with my protein and sauce, and that was way more than enough. I ended up only eating half of my dinner (about a third to a half cup and finishing it a couple hours later for a snack). Leftovers are a great option for lunches and sometimes breakfast. I find that I plan those better/healthier than my other meals. I agree with some of the other suggestions, such as talking to your dietitian. They can offer you specific guidance and support. Another idea to try is therapy to understand why you are making the choices you are. It may only be 1200 calories, but the choices are poor with poor nutrients. Us RNY folks need to be on top of our nutritional game between food choices and vitamins and supplements. The habits you are building now will stick with you and may lead to an undesirable outcome in the future. I wish you all the best moving forward. -

Oikos Pro yogurt. 20g of protein per cup. Vanilla and Peach are my favorites. Mix with fruit serving or a bit of granola for crunch. edited to add: I also have used the 3 ounce proteins shots. The taste isn’t so good but it’s only 3 ounces and gives you I believe 20 to 30 g of protein. -

Hey people! 4 months and 3 days post RNY. What meal and snack ideas can you give me that are high in protein? I'm still not hitting my goals and currently thinking about drinking protein, turns my stomach. This happened in the beginning aftrr surgery as well. Any good recipes? I know there are recipes on here somewhere, but what are your top high protein foods? I need to start planning my foods ahead again. How long did everyone's hair loss last? When I had lapband in 2009, my hair loss wasn't as bad as it is this time. My hair gets SO tangled! Probably because this time my hair is lightened and colored with fashion colors. But, when did the hair loss start to ease up for you? I feel like im overeating. I feel like I could have lost a lot more weight by now. If it's not overeating then it's high calorie foods. For example, I can eat almost a who bagel with a serving of cream cheese and a 1/2 to a cup of cherries for breakfast. A lot of the times I skip lunch because I eat whatever I have at breakfast at that time. Then if I have a snack yes I'll eat a junk food item like a serving of chips or a cheesestick and then at dinner I'd have the 3 ounce of chicken, with 1/2 cup veggies and spoonful (the ones you cook with) of rice. Of course I'd have regular BBQ sauce or chic fil a sauce (a serving) and a serving of butter on my rice. Then awhile later before I get in the shower I'll have one or two of the following; a popsicle, another serving of chips, popcorn, yogurt, ice cream sandwich (yep I shouldn't be eating this. No, it hasn't made me sick and no I don't have it often), a cheesestick, etc. Or sometimes I'd eat some cereal if I know it doesn't make me feel sick. When I write it out, it doesn't look like I'm overeating, but when I track it, it comes out to be around 1200 calories. I shouldn't stress, but I need to make better choices and maybe make schedule for water intake and food intake. PLEASE, no rude/mean replies. Please be helpful. I want to succeed, and right now I feel like I'm not gonna succeed eventhough I'm not gaining, I'm still slowly losing. Thanks for your time! -

I had issues with dairy for a few weeks after surgery. It's a lot better now in smaller doses. I've had ricotta, cheese, and yogurt just fine. I'm not a fan of milk right now. I'm not sure why, it just doesn't appeal to me. So maybe try dairy again in a few weeks to a month and see how you do. -

First of all, big props staying on your plan despite the cravings. Great job. Pre-op (the worst for me) and first 6 wks post-op diet is definitely challenging! At that stage I really liked string cheese, hummus with homemade cheese crisps, Greek yogurt with a high quality cocoa powder and other flavors like with blended fruit, chili... Etc. I hope you will find something that you will enjoy soon. Many on this site have much better ideas than myself for this stage. I'm sure they will share them. -

The protein shots are much better than the shakes. I tried a couple bars and didn't like them. As long as I supplements, I make my goals. I need to figure out breakfast and a morning snack. I think that would help me get off one of the protein drinks. The problem becomes, I can't eat a whole pot of yogurt yet, so it seems silly to waste.the room when I can do the drink so much.easier and then go straight into my fluids in the morning. -

I stopped shakes from purée which was always my intention & they tasted awful. My surgeon & dietician were also a bit freer with hitting protein goals at first - as long as I was close & making an effort to get closer they were happy. But it is hard when you are eating so little. To help with my protein I found a high protein yoghurt (20g) & yoghurt drink (30g & which counted as a fluid too). I had them in the afternoon & ate/drank them over an hour or so. (You can make your own yoghurt drink by blending your yogurt with milk.) I also often ate meals that were protein only some of which was because once I ate my protein I couldn’t eat anything else. I also made my scrambled eggs with milk & made them runnier & the same with rolled oats (made on milk & extra runny). -

I always have a high protein yogurt for breakfast, it gives me a instant 25 grams of protein. One milky latte containing 300grams of skim milk, contains 11 grams of protein I can eat a 175 gram packet of small prawns and thats another 30 grams of protein. Anything after that is a bonus You will get used to finding foods for the new you. Its easier than it looks -

18+ months and I still opt for protein bars or protein shakes at times. Though majority of the time, I get enough protein through the consumption of milk, cheese (string cheese, ricotta cheese) and yogurt (skyr). These are my go to maintain my protein requirements. And I get more than 60+ grams of protein which I think is enough when I am not indulging in heavy duty work out! -
I had surgery 6/2 so I’m in purées… I made a ricotta bake - I found the recipe on TikTok. SO good. Scratched the itch for pizza / lasagna. I’m also currently loving vanilla Greek yogurt with PB2 mixed in… nice peanut buttery treat!

Hey Everyone! June 7th gastric bypass surgery recipient here. Everything’s been going great. The pain has finally subsided two days ago. The only thing I can’t really do yet is lay on my side. Hard because I’m a side sleeper. Still on phase 1 liquid diet and really struggling with getting the shakes in. I bought some protein 2o but it’s only 20 grams of protein. Waiting for my protein powder to arrive to mix into my broths and other liquids I take. Question? Does anyone get a salty aftertaste when trying to eat sweeter items? Examples are sugar free jello, sugar free pudding, plain yogurt with added stevia. It’s been a weird experience.

I'm getting so frustrated, 7 months out and almost 2 months stalled

I hate to say this, but 1800 calories a day is too much unless you are doing really strenuous exercising. I can maintain my 150 plus pound weight loss at about 1000 to 1200 calories a day, and I currently weight about 160, I am 67 years old and have had no skin removal. My doctors feel that if I did, I would be around 145 to 150. But I need new knees and there is no way I am going to have more elective surgery. But If I eat 1800 calories a day, I gain weight. Fast. Like in a couple days. And yes, there IS more restriction in eating chicken, and fish and other meats. I eat more cheese and dairy than I probably should. But it works for me. I also eat eggs. I make sure at least 2 meals a day have a simple protein like eggs, or chicken or fish, and the occasional beef meal. I happen not to eat shellfish or pork. If I have oatmeal for breakfast, I make sure to have a yogurt for a midmorning snack. I eat few processed carbs and keep my pasta, rice or bread to very very low amounts. Protein, vegetables, fresh fruits. This morning I am having my coffee then, fresh watermelon and scrambled eggs with some shredded cheese. Get back to basics and re check with your doctor or nutritionist about calories. Frankly I rarely if ever count calories; but I know what I am eating and what I can eat to maintain my weight loss. I used the grape liquacel. It's a bit funky. On bariatric pal, you can get samples of many different proteins before you commit to a large order. Maybe that is the way to go to find something she'll like. Is she strictly on liquids? There are other options for protein, like yogurt, soups with unflavored protein powder (genepro is good). I really like the bariatric pal protein shots in cran grape, pink lemonade, and apple. I hope you find something.
