  1. Hello Bariatropals, So, a week out of surgery and I am wondering what percentage of excess weight have you lost? By excess weight, I mean the extras kilos over your ideal heathy weight BMI. I was 128 kg/ 282 lbs pre op. (3 weeks prior to surgery) I was 118kg / 260 lbs, on surgery day (3 weeks after my initial consult) I am 114kg / 251lbs, 8 days post surgery. My ideal is 72kg/160lbs. I doubt I will get there because everything I read says 60% excess. Interested how you guys are going and if there is anyone with similiar stats. I am 170cm/5'7 tall.
  2. Hi all! I’m in a bit of a panic, I’m 5 weeks post op, my starting weight was 274lbs. My op weight was 268lbs. At 3weeks post op my weight was 236lbs and somehow my weight since I started purées then eventually solids has been on a steady incline(I’m now at 250lbs🥺) . It’s really disheartening. I’m honestly not sure if I’m not eating properly or whether something else might be wrong. I did have my TOM mid week 4 so I thought it might be hormonal and that I’m retaining water but nothing seems to be changing. I drink 2.5l of water a day . I eat less than 700cal a day. I get 70g of protein in , 15g of carbs and about 10g of fat in total a day. Do I have my quantities wrong? My nutritionist hasn’t been very helpful. Please can someone offer some advice.

    New goal weight

After talking with my surgeon and PCP I’ve set what I think is my final goal weight. Originally we all decided 155, which was a bit over “normal” BMI. I’ve now dropped to 149 and am feeling really good. I’ve set my “final” goal at 143. This will put me at exactly half of my starting weight! Not sure why, but that feels like a significant number and feels like a perfect goal. I’m hoping to reach it by 8/13, which will be my 2 yr sleeve anniversary. Here’s to 6 more lbs to go and then starting the maintenance process!
  4. yeah who knew that losing TOO MUCH would ever be a concern but I'm coming up on my three-month anniversary of gastric sleeve. Have had no problems really at all ... Started at 280 with the two week pre-op diet and weighed 218 this morning. Never really stalled at all and am starting to wonder what's going to happen when I reach my weight target (190). I eat four meals a day but only 200-300 calories per meal so averaging around a 1000 cal/day. I swim 2-3 times a week and do yoga 2-3 times a week and I make sure I hit my protein goals every day. And am never really hungry. In fact my afternoon meals often leave me feeling like I ate too much. When I reach my goal how will I add calories? 1000 cal/day is not sustainable forever ... is it?
  5. I am five years out and did fine till “covid” year. I gained 5 lbs and it scared me...lost it by going back to no unhealthy carbs and increased exercise. I have lost the mindset I have had since then...since surgery really. I gained the 5 back plus 10 more in the past 13 months! I am ashamed and scared. I want my weight-loss mindset back..the one where I couldn’t imagine eating “white carbs” ever again. I am depressed.
  6. It has been many years since I checked into Bariatricpal. My surgery on 9/1/2011 was at the INDIANA University Medical Center Bariatric Dept. The decision was made for weight loss and diabetic control. Over the years of owning two businesses, raising two sons, getting my husband through dental school then music school, while practicing my own career as an artist, my struggle with healthy eating and controlling diabetes was eventually too much. At the weight of 299 lbs and age of 71 yr and the consistently worsening sugar control, to the point that I was giving myself daily insulin shots, was a wake up call. It isn't an easy decision to jump into a serious surgery, like this if you don't have access to the specialist medical practice like the IU Medical campus. The Department offered lectures and programs to educate people about their obesity and ways to get help. I never felt pressured to sign up for the surgery but after a few appointments with the surgeon and nutritionist, several medical tests reassured me that my basic health was able to handle the surgery, I followed through with the required initial diet and weight loss. I lost 45 lbs in the first 4 months. It was rather easy to do by following the diet prescribed and I even thought about forgoing the surgery, except for the diabetes issue. Going ahead with the recommended RNY and strictly following the diet, I got down to 165 lbs. That was higher than I thought would be ideal but the sight of boney neck, face and arms seemed fine. For anyone who is older like me, I strongly encourage that you research your area for a surgery clinic that is recommended and consider your options. The following advantages that I received: 1. Loads of energy. 2. Longer life, (said my cardiologist) 3. Feeling younger. 4. More interest in going out for travel and exercising. Having recommended it I must say that I don't recommend it for young people who are doing it for vanity alone. Why? 1. You have to follow strict regiment on vitamins and follow up care. 2. You have to absolutely restrict your food intake. You have to be prepared for a complete change of food choices. 3. You have to be psychologically prepared to be successful over all temptations. ISSUES that I have encountered may be due to lack of nutrition. My current medical care is concentrated on low hemoglobin , anemia, kidney function. The good news is that my diabetes is under control and I haven't needed insulin or any medication since surgery. After years of sticking to the rules for eating, I cannot overeat. A couple of bites of protein, tiny veggies, a bite of fruit fills my stomach to the point that I can be in pain. This is one issue that I wonder about and if other long term RNY patients have experienced. You comments are welcome.
  7. Congrats on the weight loss thus far. I’m 3 weeks post op and started at around your weight (492). When did you start eating “normally” again? If you have.

I’m still part time food... most time shake lol at 6 mo post bypass... but it doesn’t bother me. Hope you are doing well. I’m down to 145 from 240.
      best wishes

  8. I am almost 5 weeks post op. I lost A LOT right after surgery. I really didn't eat the first week, and barely the second week. After week three, I am not losing, sometimes gaining. This is freaking me out. I know it can be sodium, the fact that I am soooooo not regular, but, shouldn't I be losing?! I find it impossible to drink protein shake, water, and get all the protein in. All I had was a few ounces of chicken for dinner last night and couldn't drink a drop after. I am definitely dehydrated. I am coming up with ways to force me to drink, like alarms on my phone, but I would need to set an alarm every few minutes! Most days, I get one protein shake in, 20 onces of water, & one actual meal that is small. Ugh.

    Water Weight

I am on day 5 of pre-op diet and have lost 10 pounds. I am excited about it even though it's surely just water weight. I have told a few people (who have asked) that I have lost 10 pounds. They keep saying "it's just water weight." I DON'T CARE! 10 pounds is 10 pounds
  10. Thinking hard about getting bariatric surgery but I’m 67 years old and worried I’m too old. Had lap band unsuccessfully in 2008. Just wanna feel good about myself again. Has anyone had surgery over 65 years old.
  11. Hey all. I've been lurking on this board for the past week or so, but this is my first actual post. I'm almost through the first week of my 2-week pre-op liquid diet. While I'm not necessarily hungry, I definitely want FOOD. Actual solids. Never thought I would look forward to cottage cheese so much.... Anyway - I don't seem to be losing much on the liquid diet, which surprised me. 4 pounds in 4 days. On any other diet that would be GREAT, but lordy - on 1000 calories or less a day it doesnt seem like much. While I know there is no "normal" for this thing, I was just wondering what other people have experienced. Thanks in advance!
  12. I had surgery on March 23rd and had the SADI. I’m starting puréed foods currently. My weight was 265 surgery day and I’m stuck at 252 for over a week. Did anyone else have this issue?
  13. I had the sleeve done on 2/4. Lost weight for 3 weeks, stalled for 5 and now just recently started losing weight again. The problem I have is that it seems slower than before. Since March 27th I have maybe lost 5 or 6 lbs. I have 2 different scales, one is a body composition scale that I picked up to see if I could get some kind of baseline on my stats. Anyway 5 lbs in 10 days doesn't seem like much compared to how fast it went in the first 3 weeks. Just wondering if that is normal expected weight loss now? By my calculations I should be burning about a net of 2000 calories per day, which seems like I should be losing more weight than I am. Maybe I'm just impatient because I lost so much perceived ground during the ridiculously long stall.
  14. My surgeon requested that I not gain more than 5 lbs prior to getting my bypass. I’m still a month out and noticed that I’ve gained 10 lbs since my last appointment. Has anyone else experienced weight gain prior to their surgery date? I have been lenient with my food choices recently since I will be starting the pre-op diet on 4-16...and know my future diet will be very constrictive. I am actually thinking of starting the pre-op diet sooner to counter the weight gain I’ve experienced. I’m curious to know if others have experienced these issues! Thank you in advance for any advice you may have!
  15. I’m on the 4th day of my 14 day pre-op diet and been trying to google/research everything I can about the gastric bypass. I came upon an article that essentially said that older and menopausal women are slow to lose and not as great results. I figured this was the place to find out the deal from my peers. I just turned 50, so this article definitely got my mind thinking. What are your experiences or thoughts? I would love to hear.c
  16. Hello again to all the WL Veterans....Queen of Crop here...sleeved 10 years ago this October. Lots 88 lbs and have gained back 25. I live in Amsterdam and have no WLS support here (nor did I ever have it). So after keeping my weight off for 5 of the 10 years, started gaining again due to poor choices about 5 lbs a year for the last 5 years. I used to listen to Reeger Cortell's wonderful podcast that she did for years; in fact I was a guest on her show one month. She mentioned weight loss medication; that it might be an option. But I don't know anything about it and not even sure they would offer it here. (There is very little obesity in Holland; at 155 lbs I feel like I am one of the heaviest people in Amsterdam!). Anyway, has anyone had any experience with this and was it successful. I feel like I need some help to get back to basics. Photos taken exactly one year apart after surgery.
  17. I had my lap-band removed a little over a year ago due to complications. Since then I have gained 30 pounds and growing, and now have a BMI of 35. I met with my surgeon today in hopes of getting a revision to gastric bypass. He does not believe I would qualify due to my BMI not being 40 or above, although my band was removed due to complications. He is still willing to play out the process and see what happens (dietician visits, etc.). He has also ordered a bunch of tests to see if anything shows up that may be obesity related that may help the process. Has anyone else been in the the same or similar situation? What was your outcome? I appreciate any feedback.
  18. I have my sleeve procedure next month in about 3 weeks. Getting nervous! I want to hear from others like me so I know what to expect, part of me is nervous I won’t lose any weight and the other part of me is scared of getting so skinny my husband or I won’t recognize myself. I have a BMI of 35.5 and qualified through insurance due to pre-existing conditions. I’m 5 foot 2 inches and weigh 199 and would consider myself as having a larger natural frame. When I diet hard, I can drop about 20-25 pounds in 3 months or so, but it always just shoots back up. I have read that I could get down into the 140s or 130s even and I can’t remember the last time I weighed that. Even in high school I was in the low 150s when I played field hockey. I am VERY ready to get healthy after my mom had a major health scare recently. If I continue on this path I get afraid I may not live to see my own kids get married or even see my own grandkids someday. Still, while I know everyone’s body is different, I would like to know what I can expect, because it seems like what I read on forums vs the official medical representation is different. How fast did everyone lose weight in my category? What weight did you end up at the 6 month mark and the 12 month mark? According to my doctor, I have 70-75 pounds of excess weight. I don’t plan to start working out other than walks or bike riding until I am fully healed. Thanks everyone! Hopefully this will help my nerves!
  19. Does one need to pay for a membership to add the personal data that I see on several members? I see where it could be added but it wont let me add anything?
  20. Hi! I had surgery on March 10th 2021. From 3 week Pre-op until now, I have lost a total of 19 pounds (nearing 6 weeks total time). I have not lost any weight in the last 10 days. I’ve spent a good period of time assuring myself by reading the great feedback on others posts about similar questions but, most suggest the 3 week stall and I have heard that the stall can happen 2-4 weeks post surgery. Has anyone ever heard of a stall basically right out of the gate? I am tracking - I am at 600 calories/day and 60g of protein. My Pre-Op Diet Start Weight was 257 and I am currently 238. Thanks in advance for the advice and feedback, a little challenging to not be discouraged!
  21. So I am 2 days posy op, I just weighed myself and I am like 8 lbs heavier than when I WENT IN TO SURGERY! How is that even possible? Is it all the bloating and gas? Day 1 in hospital I ate a quarter of a jello, 3 tablespoons of chicken broth, 2 protein shakes, a tablespoon on refried beans and a tablespoon of pureed turkey. At home I had a half of a jello, 4 tablespoons of soup. Today I havent eaten anything. Really what the hell!? Is this normal???
  22. It's been two months since my sleeve surgery. I was 308 and now im 274. The weight lose has stopped what am i doing wrong? Sent from my LM-Q730 using BariatricPal mobile app
  23. Happy friday all - I am scheduled for surgery next Wed and the MD wants me to lose between 10-20 lbs. I have been adhering to the 3 protein drinks, 2 cups of veg and 2(1/2)c of broth each day. I have been on it for 7 days and only lost 7 lbs. Any ideas/tips? I'm hardly eatting anything and it should be falling off me. Thanks!
  24. I am a few days away from a month after my gastric bypass surgery , I have been doing everything my surgeon told me to do . I can't believe i lost 65 lbs in 27 days !!! I'm finally feeling happy , lighter, and healthier today. If you are not extremely strong, physically but mostly mentally . This journey is not for you. In my first month I overcame 2 major issues, on top of and including my surgery recovery. Alcohol free " reversing a large fatty liver" and testosterone infections free too I'm proud of myself . natural test levels are not back yet but feeling better everyday. my energy level is increasing everyday. i do 2, 20 minute walks per day. I really have no appetite, but i get my vitamins and protein shakes in everyday. and water . my next diet stage is real soft food again, but i hate the full feeling so i rather just drink fluids. thanks for all the advice on my previous posts i took them with a grain of salt. But everyone helped me find light at the end of the depression tunnel. I will not try anything without dr. approval. Anyone interested in healthy living and fatty liver issues, look up Dr. Berg on youtube and subscribe !!!! he's extremely helpful !!!
  25. So question to you all, when calculating out your excess weight, did you use the weight of when you started your journey (for some that may be their highest weight) or use the weight that you checked in for surgery? So for example, I was at 304lbs when I started my journey (lapband removed and going through all the testing to before surgery) aftet all of that plus the pre op liver shrinking diet (total of 6 months from band removal to bypass) I got down to 278 on my surgery day. So I am just trying to figure out do I used the 304lbs or 278lbs to calculate out my excess weight.
