  1. May 22nd I found a PCP and met with her. We had a good appointment where we discussed my weight and goals. At the end of the appointment she has made the decision to refer me to a local weight loss center which is covered by my insurance. The next day I went to get blood work. I am so happy to get the ball rolling and wage war against the bulging belly! The following are requirements for approval for insurance coverage. Benefits for the surgical treatment of morbid obesity, performed on an inpatient or outpatient basis, are subject to the pre-surgical requirements listed below. The member must meet all requirements. − Diagnosis of morbid obesity (as defined on page 63) for a period of 2 years prior to surgery − Participation in a medically supervised weight loss program, including nutritional counseling, for at least 3 months prior to the date of surgery. (Note: Benefits are not available for commercial weight loss programs; see page 42 for our coverage of nutritional counseling services.) − Pre-operative nutritional assessment and nutritional counseling about pre- and post-operative nutrition, eating, and exercise − Evidence that attempts at weight loss in the 1 year period prior to surgery have been ineffective − Psychological clearance of the member’s ability to understand and adhere to the pre- and post-operative program, based on a psychological assessment performed by a licensed professional mental health practitioner (see page 95 for our payment levels for mental health services) − Member has not smoked in the 6 months prior to surgery − Member has not been treated for substance abuse for 1 year prior to surgery and there is no evidence of substance abuse during the 1-year period prior to surgery I will be having my surgery at Legacy Weight and Diabetes Institute. http://www.legacyhealth.org/health-services-and-information/health-services/for-adults-a-z/weight-and-diabetes-institute/surgery.aspx I still have no idea what surgery will be best for me, but from as much as I have read and heard, my personal choice would be gastric sleeve. Time will tell! just happy to start my journey and it truly began on this site. your support and information has been amazing. Thank you
  2. What the hell? She's not a mental health expert. I think it's normal to cry. I think it shows how much it bothers you abd that you have a lot of motivation to lose weight!

    3 Months Out Update

I'm at 3 months out and here is where I'm at: I started this journey at 100kg (aahh!!) 220lbs and now I weigh 77.6kg / 170 lbs (Yay!!!) I have lost 22.4kg / 49lbs... I was busting out of Australian size 18's and now I can get my butt into a size 12!!! I have lost 71 cm in total from my body.. 20cm alone from my waistline!! My BMI is now 31, down from 40.. I once had sleep apnoea, now I don't wake up grasping for air!! I used to feel huge and in the way, now I feel comfortable in my skin... I used to puff crossing to oval to pick up my kids, I now skip up the stairs with ease.. My exercise bike was caked with dust, it's now out of hibernation. What else can I say? but this is without a doubt the best thing I could have ever done for myself!!!... Sure compared to others, I am one of the 'slow-losers'.. but thats fine. I chose to be a 'secret-sleever', so the gradual loss is working well for me, nobody suspects that I am losing weight in any other way than good old diet and exercise, (which is pretty accurate anyway).. but I have this sensational tool that makes it just that little bit easier!! I still have 15.6kg / 34lbs to lose reach my goal weight of 62 kg (BMI of 25)... so I guess my only concern is that I am now worried about when this weight loss will stop and the honeymoon period people say about on this forum??.. (That and the fact that I am still losing quite a lot of hair each day, luckily I have quite a lot hair to begin with!!)... So if anybody has any advice or experience about what to expect in terms of weight loss from this point on I would really appreciate it!

    Working On The Essentials...

When I went to see the psychologist that was required by my doctor, it was someone that worked closely with his patients on a regular basis for pre-WLS. The conversation wasn't lengthy, he asked me about myself...and I told him. And then he gave me a 165 question quiz that basically tells him/the surgeon what kind of patient I will be...basically am I fit emotionally and psychologically to have such a life altering surgery, and will I follow post-op instructions, etc. Other than that, he didn't delve into other aspects of my personal life too much. As far as the pre-op diet, I haven't started mine yet..I'm seeing my surgeon on Thursday and hopefilly I will get my surgery date (hoping for week of the 20th this month!) and will start it soon. However, the plan your NUT made you sounds maybe like a pre-pre-op diet? If that makes sense? lol. They want you to get down 20lbs before you're okay to have surgery, but they're just altering the way you intake your calories...It seems like most doctors ACTUAL like "2 weeks before surgery" preop diet is really strict and consists of liquids only, (i know some doctors are probably different..) anyway, looks like they're just wanting to get you down to a healthier bracket of weight before they do surgery on you. you probably do have another more intense pre-op diet that will start a couple week before your surgery. Good luck!!
  5. Hi!! Very different experiences we are having. The psychologist is part of the weight loss surgery team. I filled out a 370 question form and then had a very dynamic conversation about all aspects of my life. The surgeon said to loose 15-20 lbs for surgery. I am cool with the day before being all liquids. I can't imagine if I met the 20 lbs requirement why I would need to do a crazy pre op diet. It does not make sense to do a pre pre op and pre op. The nut said a lot of people get nervous about having to loose this weight prior to surgery. Time will tell!! Sounds like I should prepare myself either way!! Thank you replying!! Have a good Sunday!! Sannah Sent from my iPhone using VST
  6. http://flipagram.com/f/Du6gnljHCm I want the thinner healthier ME back. It's so depressing to see how much I lost then gained then lost then gained back. I cannot wait for July to be sleeved and work hard to change me and end this cycle of yoyo weight!
  7. Hi Everyone, I am new to the forum and desperitly need to loose weight. I have been overweight most of my life and am at my heaviest now. I need to loose at least 125 pounds... I have tried many differant types of weight loss including having my jaw wired shut at one time =( I deal with a neurological injury and have had multiple surgerys... I take multiple medications including pain meds that can't be crushed. My question is... Would my medical history and medications prevent me from having the lap band surgery? I know I need to have a consult with a lap band doctor but I thought I would ask your oppinion first. Thanks again, Dawn

  10. Fat Doctor on youtube...a FAB british show about weight loss surgeons. mostly RNY surgeries, a couple sleeves and a few lapbands. all around though a great show. really covers post op, eating, family, successes, etc. much better than my 600 lb life. youtube has the first four seasons totally uploaded and season 5 is coming in a couple months

Is anyone taking blood thinners (coumadin)?

Sorry I can't really help you except to say I think you're right to check with your cardiologist; in fact he and your surgeon should probably have a talk. From what I know of coumadin, it might be dicey to keep taking it with the band; is your cardiologist aware of and on board with your surgery? A-Fib is nothing to play around with; do they think losing weight will make it resolve? You're right to be cautious but if you don't discountinue the drug as early as your surgeon asked, be sure you tell him. He needs to know what he's facing when he operates on you! GOod luck!

90 Day Challenge: A Healthier Me

Good for you! You will be successful now and after surgery! Your body will recover so much faster with the weight loss. Use all of your wonderful tools to the max. Use your sleeve as a tool as well. We are all in this together. I just might start a challenge too. I'm praying for surgery in the new year/jan. I want to loose 30lbs before. Best wishes to you! Keep it up.
  13. I am having my surgery on Sept. 6th. when I initially went to a dr. I went to a satelitte for the surgeon in the county I live in (about 75 + miles from hospital). I weighed 388 lbs. I was told to follow the South Beach Diet and that was the last time I was weighed in or saw a Dr. for 6 mos. I myself went and got the psych eval when I learned my ins. required one but by that time I was 4 mos in and also learned that I needed monthly weigh ins with my PCP. oops I continued dieting and called the surgeons office and was given an appt to see him. That day was 5 mos. after my initial weigh in and I had lost 80lbs. My ins comp. waived the 6 mos weigh ins since I had wrote down everything I had ate and proved that I could lose weight and follow a plan. t has been a month since that weigh in and I know I have lost another 8lbs. So keep positive and talk to your surgeon!
  14. Ya my physician and NUT said its healthy for the surgery to drop some weight, but nobody could answer the 'will i disqualify' question lol. I definately don't think ill drop 70lbs lol. If i do then I will only have 30lbs left to get to goal and wont need the sleeve lmao! That would be funny. But no your right i guess it will all be ok and work out correctly! Yes they said the same, they just want to focus on my behavior and if it has changed!! The changes you made are good! Did you gain a lot? I think you will be approved. Gaining wait is the reason we need the procedure
  15. Depending on your insurance requirements and the requirements of the surgeon, you will complete pre-op testing (usually a psychologist visit, physical therapist, nutrititional evaluation, metabolic testing, complete blood tests, sleep study, etc). Some insurance companies require a 3-6 month diet. Some require a list of all diets you've ever tried with corresponding time frames and weight lost. It really can vary.
  16. My doctor's office called and said they have the verbal approval yesterday, and we scheduled my tenative surgery date for 6/9. They won't firm it up until they get the letter. So i called the Insurance to find out when they would be sending the letter out, and if I could get it faxed to me. They girl i talked to showed it was still pending. So i called the dr's office and left a message that i was confused. I get a message back today that they are now saying I need to notify them 6 months before Surgery to get approved, not that I have to have a medically supervised weight loss, just that I need to notify them 6 months in advance!!!!! Now, I called and checked my benefits, and the Dr also called and verified benefits, and was never told any of this, and I went on my plan website and logged in as me, and you can see below that it states nothing about a 6 month noitfication!!!! I am so Frustrated, it has been 6 months of gettting all my appointments in and getting everything ready. The coordinator at my Dr office is not giving up on pushing this through, and neither am I we are both going to call the insurance tomorrow again.....I am just to irritated, I just needed to vent!!! Notification Requirements Special Note Regarding Medicare If you are enrolled in Medicare and Medicare pays benefits before the Plan, you are not required to notify us before receiving Covered Health Services. 17. So my surgery is scheduled for Wednesday, right?! Well I have pulled a muscle in my neck/back. I did it in my sleep and it woke me up it hurt so bad. I have been in severe pain all day. I called my weight loss surgery nurse and she said it would be okay to take Tylenol. She said if I was in too much pain that they could postpone my surgery. I said NO WAY!!!!!!!! She just laughed and said she understood. I don't care if my husband has to carry me in there, I AM going to that hospital on Wednesday and I AM getting my band!!!!!!! So my new heating pad that I got for post op is getting broken in early!! :-) Good luck to my fellow Wednesday banders!! Here's hoping we have a fast and easy recovery!!!
  18. Hi All! I am a newbie here, I have stalked a lot of threads but never posted. I am on day 7 of my 10 day liquid diet and I have lost 14lbs so far, but I did cheat a little last night and I have been beating myself up over it all day long. I even had a dream that I was told no for my surgery Wednesday because I didn't loose enough weight. I am terrified and as soon as my daughter wakes up from her nap I am going to bit the gym at full force with what energy I can gather from the sole liquid diet:/ I don't want to sound pathetic, but I have been seriously obsessing over what the scale says every day and I don't want to get to the date that I waited so long for and my surgeon tell me he can't do it:/ anyone else feel this way?
  19. Thank you! Yeah, I absolutely, after this, plan to join my husband at his PCP! As far as my OB, this was the first time I have ever had an issue with them, and to be quite frank, I don't blame them. Especially since they're right, the surgeons office has all my records from them, all they have to do is take those papers, highlight if they must the dates and weights, and submit to insurance. I have fought with insurance companies in the past, times when most people would have just given up, and I got the results I wanted. This time should be no different, but I am psyching myself out due to the magnitude of the surgery.

The last day of my old life

This is exactly how I felt on the "last" day. What motivated me is that now, I'm truly on the road to loosing weight and there's no going back from here. Just 2 weeks away from surgery, and it's on! It feels like my life is really going to change from here on out! Good luck, and know you're definitely not the only one! No problem is unfamiliar in this community! :biggrin0:

My story -- June 9th surgery

Little update... Landed back in the hospital Friday with pneumonia. Really think it's directly related to not being allowed to walk that first day. Still just pressure in the chest. At least now they are letting me roam the halls all I want. Should get out late tonight or Monday. Very easy to stay compliant when they're bring your Clear liquids on a tray. Even getting the hospital's bariatric Protein drink! When I was admitted Friday I was down 10 pounds from Mondays surgery weight. Probably in one-derland right now. Need to have them weigh me again! Lol

Can I Rant For A Minute?

Thanks everyone. The 20lbs pre op loss is a combination of what my personal goal is as well as what my doctor Wants. My last appointment with him I was 262lbs on his scale (weird because I was 270 on mine). I am fluctuating between 275-278 right now. He did mention that at my next appointment that I cannot gain any weight from the 262lbs that I was at..which stresses me out. So that's why I got the one week extra head start. The diet doesn't bother me. I quite enjoy the glucerna shakes. They taste real good! I just hope I will be down to 260 by September 27.. So that means 1 month to lose 15 lbs..do-able right? Especially on liquids only?
  24. Hi all~ Hope everyone is well! Here's my 1st question~I havent gone to my sugeon yet (nxt wk) but was banded by him and had it removed a few yrs ago. Now I want the sleeve cause I gained about 100 back. I have united healthcare through OXFORD and when I read up on their site yesterday, I saw something about a 6 month dieting log or something like that. Really??!! I didnt have to do that w/ the band (2003) so how do you do this? If I could diet this weight off why would I opt for surgery?! How exactly does that work? I wonder if being I was banded for a good 6/7 yrs and had it off for 2 yrs now if I still would need to go through this 6 month WAIT because I need a diet log. Like what...6 months of weight watchers?? Geeeezzzzzzz!! When I was banded yrs ago and had to do Protein shakes, I used Isopure (chocolate) it has 65 grams protein. I would put 6 oz skim milk into blender add the Isopure and bottoms up. I think many used Water instead of milk but the milk made it taste better + gave me Calcium. I relly haven't read anything about Isopure on this site and wonder why. Also, I was told that your body cant absorb more than 30 (ish) grms of protein at ONE time so anything more than 30 grams is wasted and that you should have it twice aday. Anyone heard of this??? I appreciate any/all the help
  25. I’m just at the start of my 6-month diet for insurance. I’m impatient to have the sleeve, but I’m trying to make the best of the wait and lose as much as I can before the surgery. I’m doing well on my low-carb diet, but exercise is a tough one for me. I’ve been trying to make myself do at least 15 minutes of activity daily (I know it isn’t much, but I’ve been sedentary for so long that 15 minutes is all I can do.) I have some chair exercises that my NUT gave to me, but I’d like to start getting out of the chair and using more of my body. I’ve found that I am ok following along with exercise videos on YouTube for 10-15 minutes, but I often have to modify the exercises into ones that I can do. Does anyone have any favorite exercise videos that they like to use, especially ones that might be better for someone at a higher weight?
