  1. Hi! I really appreciate what you shared as I'm heading into Gastric Bypass surgery on 12/8/2020. I particularly identified with staying with a spouse because I was overweight and felt that no one would want me. I had actually had this surgery scheduled for Feb. 2019, but my husband refused to acknowledge that he had diabetes and developed double vision, so I had to cancel because we felt we could not have both parents incapacitated. There were also issues of mild physical abuse (hitting, pushing), as well as verbal, emotional, and financial abuse. Turns out that I needed to lose his 330 lbs. prior to getting my surgery done and ended a 25 year marriage. Life is so much better! I wish you the same feelings of relief, freedom, and confidence. You can do this.

    December 2020

It’s hard. No energy but then I get random spurts and do a ton of chores and then I’m back to feeling like I’m walking through sand. Also, mostly cold all the time. I’m not looking forward to being cold for the next year while my body adjusts to less fat. I keep my calories under 900/day. I’m down about 10 pounds. 20 since I started this journey. Hang in there.

    February 2019 weight loss buds

I'm enjoying life so much more. I still struggle a bit with feeling fat - like walking into a new place and automatically looking for a large chair or thinking that people are mentally fat shaming me. But then I realize I look like everyone else - actually thinner than 60% of the population, and I can sit any where I like! I gained 7-8 pounds during the whole Covid stress thing, but have lost that and maintain pretty easily at my goal weight or a couple pounds below. I've adopted Whole Food Plant Based eating and I feel really great. I've lost the gaunt look I had originally. A lost of my loose skin has tightened up. I am very happy I had the surgery to get the weight off quickly and now WFPB lets me eat as much as I want so I am never hungry or feel deprived. I hope all of our other Feb 2019 buds are doing well.

A normal day of food post op?

Well, I got a Tummy Tuck last winter, so that definitely helped some! If you look at the pictures prior to Dec 2019 (i.e., <= Day 385 in the pic collage), you can see that I for sure had loose/wrinkly skin on my abdomen and inner thighs. One of the unexpected benefits of the tummy tuck was that is smoothed out my thighs some (my backside is a different story, lol) In terms of exercise though, I started doing more than walking at about 3 months: I started out with 1-2 hours a week of various types of activity (zumba, hot yoga, bouldering, tap dancing, etc) as well as maybe 30 mins total of some very sad weight lifting a week (I hate weight lifting/strength training with the fire of a thousand suns). On top of this, I continued with my daily morning walks that I started on Day 1. By month five, I was doing about 2 one-hour classes a week of some cardio activity, + half-walking/half-running for about 1.5 hours a day + 15-20 minutes of strength training on one body part or another (still hated it). By the end of weight loss phase I was full on running at least 5km every day (sometimes twice a day) + the dreaded 20 minutes of strength training (why do i do it since I hate it so much, you ask? because it works. dammit.) Also threw in some class or other once or twice a week. Today (2+ years out), i'm alot lazier since end of last year: After the months long recovery of plastics from last December, and then the beginnings of Covid-inspired laziness in March, I am really only running about 3-4 times (min 5 km at time) a week now, 20-30 mins of strength training maybe 2 times a week, and ZERO classes. I have noticed the difference in energy levels since the reduction (mind you, there are probably other factors to this, but still). Sorry this was so long. I tend to type (and talk) LOTS. 🤣

A normal day of food post op?

I will be four months out on 12/10/20. My food choices are very limited because I am hesitant to try new things. Breakfast - Premier Protein Shake, Oikos Triple Zero Yogurt, blueberries, strawberries, orange, Wegman’s Bran Flakes, one scrambled egg, one turkey link sausage, sweet potato home fries, smoothies, coffee, fat free milk Lunch - string beans, kale, peas and carrots, tuna fish, salmon, Premier Protein Shake, Protein Bar, protein powder Dinner - mashed potato, sweet potato, collard greens, kale, string beans, salmon, sea bass, shrimp, crab legs, crab cake, pork ribeye I measure everything. I eat for the most part two or three small meals a day. No more than 5 ounces at each meal. I was able to have thanksgiving dinner with 5 ounces of food. I had leftover on Friday. So happy that I got through my first holiday. My calorie intake is about 700 per day sometimes less. But I feel great.

  8. Hello I haven’t posted on here in a while. Down below are my stats... Surgery date 1/23/2020 HW-255 SW-237 CW-130 GW-110-120 Please no negative comments... I want to know does anyone feel like they are eating too much? My nutritionist says I need to stick to 800-1000 calories a day but it’s very hard. At 10 months out I am finding myself fitting more in my stomach and eating anywhere from 900 to 1500 calories a day....I don’t eat until beyond full...once I get full I stop! I am just concerned I’m eating more than usual. Anyone out there around my surgery date want to talk? I am thinking I need more support from people who have been or are going though what I am? I have great support at home but the more the better! It also might be the holidays that has me feeling guilty. My nutritionist said i can have a cheat day and i did because i had pie....I just don’t want to gain weight. My BIGGEST fear! I did schedule an appointment next week to see a barbaric therapist to see what’s going on and why I am making myself feel like the absolute horrible person when I eat.

  10. Hi Gang. Meow here. 5.5 months post op bypass. I've had slow but steady losses. (SW:217 CW:178. GW: 150) And I just felt the need to make a post about my sweet addiction. Before my surgery I found myself very concerned about dumping. Often asking in the forum whether Bypass meant I could never have treats again and being assured I could "eventually" or "a bite or two" or "in moderation" etc. This brought me great relief. I knew then I wasn't in the ideal frame of mind but I was doing the best I could. I found at about 4 weeks post op I could tolerate about 5 of my favorite chocolate covered almonds and ate them every night as a reward for hitting my protein and water goals. Eventually I increased that to 10 choco almonds. Then it moved to other desserts or candy. What I've found is my entire eating plan is focused on getting my "healthys" in so I can have a treat at the end of the day. I become obsessed. I realize I've always been that way. Eat healthy so you can indulge. I find I get nauseous if I eat a full portion of dessert. But I can usually get away with eating half. So I do. Every day. Or I eat the full portion and get nauseous. I get thru it. Usually lasts about 30 minutes. I feel miserable. I don't throw up. When I'm in the middle of the nausea I swear I'll never have sugar again. But then it passes and I'm the addict again. The last couple months I've somehow justified 2 treats a day. And this Thanksgiving was the first time I really realized how deeply I don't have control over my treat addiction. I was surrounded by baked goods. I'd eat a small one. Feel sick. Then a couple hours do it again. Over the 2 days of celebration I made myself feel sick about 5 times. The nausea is miserable. Sweats, light headed, toe-curling nausea. Then it passes. And I'm fine. And like a drug addict I indulge again. It's shocking. It's like I'm binging. Except I never throw up and it's only one treat at a time. I guess my point is... bypass didn't cure me. I do feel sick when I eat too much sugar. But it doesn't stop me from doing it. From constantly seeing how much I can have before I feel sick. I have a lot of work to do before I am no longer "unhealthy" regardless of my weight. Wanted to share in case others are sweet addicts and wondering how the surgery will affect that.

A normal day of food post op?

LOLOLzzz...I had to rack my brain to remember why I was doing that. Now I remember: I didn't usually eat until noon (was never a breakfast person, never was pre-op, and still am not), and I had to take 3 calcium pills a day, which had to be taken with something in my tum lest I get an upset stomach. Sooooo...for my morning dose, I scooped out a tsp of greek yogurt, buried my calcium pill in it and swallowed! Edit to add: soon after than I switched to the chocolate flavoured calcium chews so didn't have to do that anymore. They were like 10 cals each, but I decided to take the hit cuz they were delicious, lol.

    Smoked oyster and clam spread

1 tin smoked baby clams 1 tin smoked oysters 1 cup Fage 0% plain Greek yogurt 1 cup part skim Ricotta cheese 1/2 cup grated three cheese blend 1 can artichoke hearts in water 2 cups loose fresh spinach 1 tbsp Worchestershire sauce 1 tsp Tabasco 1 tbsp horseradish Stir yogurt and cheese in bowl. Pulse oysters and clams (drain and rinse first to get rid of can taste) and stir into blend Pulse artichoke hearts and stir into blend Stir in spinach, Worchestershire, Tabasco and horseradish into blend. Spoon 1/4 cup into ramekins. Bake at 375 for 20 minutes. 104 cals, 5.4 G fat, 4.4 G carb, 9.3 G protein. Makes 10-12 servings. Nutrition based on 10 servings. My surgeon plan says to stop drinking liquids 15-30 mins before eating, so I stop when I put this in oven to time it right. If you like smoked oysters at all, this is a nice, rich tasting dish that works nicely for pureed stage.

A normal day of food post op?

I'm 20 months out and I'm a little weird in that I almost never eat a full meal. Instead I eat mini-meals throughout the day. For example: 1. 6 AM: Morning latte (made with Kitu Super coffee, 10g or protein and no sugar) 2. 8 AM: 1 scrambled egg 3. 10 AM: Yogurt 4. 12 PM: 1 chicken thigh 5. 3 PM: sugar-free pudding 6. 7 PM: handful of almonds 8. Nighttime snack: cheese stick I typically eat 800-900 calories in a day and 60-70g of protein. I restrict carbs but not calories, so if I have a hungry day I might eat a little more or conversely I might have a low appetite day and eat less.

    Acid Reflux- Please Help

I've had acid reflux since 2010. Has a gastric sleeve in 2014 which helped with weight loss, but increased the acid reflux. I've run out of possible medical management and the reflux was destroying my quality of life. After having a bunch of diagnostic tests to confirm my acid reflux, my insurance approved gastric bypass surgery (gastrojejunostomy). I had surgery 10/29/20 and haven't had an episode of reflux since. Realize, this was major life changing surgery to cure my acid reflux, but at 63, I didn't see any improvement in my life without surgery. I'm now 4 weeks post op, healing and most of the post op issues are resolving. A "complication" of this surgery is weight loss, and I've lost 18 lbs. since surgery...….SWEET! I'm not saying that surgery is the best option for everyone with chronic GERD, but it was definitely the right choice for me.

    Pre-Op diet repeat 2.5years out?

I've found that I need a few carbs thrown in to be able to lose weight. Sounds odd, I know, but it's what works for me. I gained a few pounds (10-12) during COVID so now I'm doing the pre-op diet thing and resetting and it's working. SLOWLY, but it's working. I'm losing. It'll work. Trust the process.

    Feet

I'm down 95 pounds from my high weight of 393, but I have at least 100 to go, and my feet are definitely smaller. My lowest adult weight was 153 and I wore 8.5 wide in shoes. When I got in the 200s I started wearing a 9 or 10. When I got in the 300s my feet stayed a 9 or 10 but shoes got much harder to fit because my already wide feet got even wider. I weight 296 right now and my shoes all fit so much better. I'm hoping I'll get back to and 8.5 after I get to goal. Unfortunately my feet have always been and will always be wide. [emoji849] Even as an average sized kid my feet were wide. Sent from my Nokia 7.2 using BariatricPal mobile app

A normal day of food post op?

At three months, I was eating scrambled eggs or rolled oats for breakfast (2 scrambled eggs took 3 days to eat & a serve of rolled oats took 3 or 4 days). For lunch I ate about 50/60g of chicken or half a pork sausage or a slice of smoked salmon wrapped around a small wedge of cucumber. Dinner was about 50/60g of steak, lamb, pork, fish with two or three beans or a cauliflower floret or a tablespoon of steamed cabbage. If I cooked mince I’d add carrots, celery, onions, mushrooms, tomatoes & sometimes peas & corn & I could eat about a third of a cup. My snack was always high protein yogurt (a 160g tub or 260ml drinking yogurt) & sometimes fruit (slice of watermelon, 8-10 grapes, a mango cheek) or sometimes a cube of cheese. The fruit & cheese were just if I felt hungry. I ate my snack/s in the afternoon or after dinner.

    Revision completed

Had my revision on 11/19 and it only been 8 days but still having a hard time sitting up for long periods of time. I have to lay down at some points during the day. I'm able to get my protein in since I have it in everything I eat and drink. So have to say it's not that bad now that the swelling in my stomach has gone down. 4 days out so many ??s

I had surgery on Thursday the 19th, home on the 20th and no real pain. Took pain meds twice before bed “just in case” and that’s it. I also feel I have a lot of energy consider I went through surgery. I was back working (from home) on Tuesday (6 days after surgery) and have no problem working 10 hr days. Busy year end time. I get up every hour and walk around the house for 10 min so I’m not sitting all day. I did 7,000 steps the other day. Not bad for 1 week after surgery. I’m very pleased by the recovery. I was for sure expecting worse. I have just started purged and soft food but I’m scared! I’m still eating soup and shakes but know I need to move onto other foods. how are you doing with food? And weight loss?
  23. Hey guys and gals, I have my vsg this past Tuesday. I’ve been in severe pain (8 on a 10) since surgery. If it’s not the gas pains still killing me (walking helps, but it’s still there) than the incisions (7 made) and muscle soreness are doing it. The doctor gave me oxycodone at home, which is helping minimal. Did anyone else vomit blood the night after surgery? I did, but my doctor said it was not unusual. Anyone else feel this amount of pain? If you did, when did it go away? Any other tips? Thank you

    December 2020

@LayersofBea. I'm December 8th too, but for gastric bypass. Not scared of surgery. Not scared of recovery. Terrified that I won't be tough enough to not feel deprived and sorry for myself about 3 months into this. So scared I'm going to fail at this too. However, my therapist reminded me that I've researched the heck out of this, worked hard on the 10 habits, set up my kitchen and pantry to support me and whole family with healthy eating, and spent the last 6 months preparing mentally and emotionally (in addition to physical prep). How about the rest of you who are close? What are you feeling? Sent from my SM-G950U1 using BariatricPal mobile app
  25. I am very picky about the protein bars I eat. I love Built Bars not only because they are amazingly delicious, but they are also fairly low in calories (130 to 180 calories) with 17-19 grams of protein and 5 grams of sugar or less.
