    Self sabotage

I would guess that almost all of us have felt the same way, I know I can relate. We are bombarded with the message from society that obesity is a character flaw. I had an awesome surgeon and one of the best things he did was educate me on the disease of obesity and the physiology of weight gain/loss. That helped a tremendous amount toward relieving a lot of guilt. With modern world of abundant food and industrial food production there is a reason that obesity is epidemic all over the world.

    Dr. Jayaseelan?

Does anyone have trouble with weight gain after going back on solids? I had a fill on 1/30 and after a week of fluids/soft foods I lost 2 pounds, only to gain them back after going back to solids this past weekend!! Help! I know I'm not eating ANYWHERE near what I did pre-band. My body must just be fighting this whole weight thing. I know my metabolism is so slow . . . I'm frustrated. It feels like I have to be on "nothing foods" to loose.

    December sleevers!

Hey Guys! My date is December 13th with Dr. Pompa in TJ. Can't wait to be on the other side! I start my liquid pre-op one week before, but I'm thinking of doing low carb for a few weeks before that so I can stop this barreling train of weight gain I'm on.
  5. thanks for replies, I actualy figured out why i gained so much so fast and was extreamly swollen apparently i have a sodiuma allergy or my body is unable to process all the sodium and salt so i started limiting sodium from my diet and im at a steady weight gain now. i just have to read all labels...
  6. Currently I am taking meds for all three. I have taken some meds that did cause a huge amount of weight gain, but I stopped them as soon as I realized that. So far, I have stayed at my weight for the past few months, if I have gained it's because of eating bad stuff. I don't want to stop taking any of my meds because I have been stable and out of the hospital for more than two years. I have had a few bouts with depression, mostly due to stress. My self esteem is shot because of my weight, I hardly leave the house because of it. But other wise I am ok. Thanks for responding. susi

    Beware of the UN-fill !!!

I've had two unfills and never experienced any of those side effects. As far as "rapid weight gain", that only happens if you start eating more than you should be. The band itself doesn't make you lose weight or gain weight. The band simply allows you to be satisfied on less food for longer periods of time. Whether you lose or gain weight depends entirely on how much you eat.
  8. I want to preface by saying that this is not about my Dr., but about the manufacturer of my band. Now to start my story. I was banded in July 08 and did very well for the first year. I lost about 65 lbs and am very happy with my band experience. I lost my Father to cancer in April 09 and became too tight. I tried to deal with it. But my husband also lost his job, so I had to wait for money to get a flight to Denver to get an unfill (I only see my surgeons office for fills because it costs about the same to get a plane ticket and go to his office as it is to get a fill here). So I went in for an unfill in October and it helped immensely. I returned in January to get another fill, and hadn't gained, but had lost a little. By April I had the feeling I needed another fill, so I got one. 3 days later I felt NO restriction. I made another appointment and flew out to figure out what was going wrong. My Surgeon pulled out the saline and there was only 1.2cc's (supposed to be 6.4) So he determined I had a leak. So I schedule a port replacement at my surgeons urging. I had gained 20 lbs by the time I had my replacement. My surgeon discovered that my tubing had eroded causing a 1/8 inch tear. He informed me that I was the 4th case he had been involved with that had this problem. Always in the same place in the tubing and is a manufacturers defect. He also informed me that he will be talking with the manufacturers of my band about their financial responsibility for the cost of the parts and the replacement surgery. I feel that is completely appropriate. They have damaged his reputation with their faulty product. What I want to know is, should I go after them for the cost of the flights, hotel, medications, weight gain, physical toll, emotional damage? Or do you think I am making too much out of this? I am obviously new to this and would love some constructive input.

    Any September surgeries out there

My weight 'gain' was apparently just my scale being a bitch for a day. Back down now and actually lost 3 lbs this wk instead of gaining it. Woohoo HW(9/3/13)- 284, DOS(9/11/13)-270, CW-254(10/02/13), GW-155(by 9/21/14...my 26th birthday!)

    Aetna insurance

Good Morning everyone! I needed some feedback and support regarding insurance not paying for bariatric surgery, I also have Aetna POS here in Louisiana and I too went through the 90 day program one of Aetna requirements, I fit all of the criteria and just last week received noticed I was denied because I gained 1 lb and did not schedule my procedure within 6 months of my initial start date. I was in shock, upset, and very disappointed. how can this be, initial program date 6/25/15 last weigh in date 9/16/15 and immediately was denied, I researched and hired obesity advocate /attorneys to fight this since Dec 2015 to start the first appeal process and last week the appeal was denied because I gained 1 lb. I do not understand that policy, I weighed in summer which means my clothes were lighter, then last weigh in was September which my clothes would have been a little heavier 1 lb is not a significant amount of weight to consider because 1 to 2 lbs can come from many factors such as clothes, time of the month, or if I had a snack or lunch prior to the appointment my clothes alone would weigh 1 to 2 lbs COME ON'. I can understand if I gained 5 lbs to 10 lbs of weight. OMG!! I want to scream...... Has anyone experienced AETNA denying surgery for weight gain and then was approved after it was appealed first or second time? Now we are going for round 2 and want to know if it is worth it bec I am so disappointed with Aetna. HELP!! please ADVISE!!

May 2006 Band Crew ~ June Chat

Linda ~ Sorry to hear about PMS. Yucko. :tired I'll be joining you next week. Don't worry about the weight gain. Concentrate on following the rules. Now, you remind me of this next week, O.K.? I've heard some say they feel more restriction when it's that time. Let me know if you experience any tightness or such. Hi Myra ~ Well, your just the little lap band trooper!!! Good for you my friend. Yipee.....15 lbs....WTG!!! I don't have much to complain about either. I keep looking at the weeds that need pulled, but I've been a chicken to get out there b/c of DeAnn pulling her port muscle. Maybe I'll stick gloves on my boys and direct them on which ones to pull.

    Sex After Lap Band Surgery

I am three weeks away from my banding surgery. It's funny how right now, although my diet is not restricted yet, I have no desire to eat things I shouldn't. My mind and body are SO ready for the surgery. I've even spent months learning to chew correctly...realizing that I've spent my life INHALING my food. My weight gain started after I had two babies within 17 months, and shortly after that broke my back. I found out I had Disc Degenerative Disease and that my back issues would continue to worsen. Since breaking my back in 2004, I've been sedate and have literally given up on my body, as I felt betrayed by this disease. At the age of 34 I had the back of an 85 year old. But now I'm 40, and I want to reclaim my health. I am TIRED of carrying around 180 extra pounds. It's making my back problems much worse, let alone killing my self-esteem. One thing I worry about...is sex. How long after surgery did you wait before you "split the sheets"? My husband is awesome. He loved me when we got married and I was 118 pounds, and loves me now that I'm a marble with a head. One thing that is important is being intimate. I know not being intimate makes my husband perceive that I'm upset with him. (Stop laughing.) I know that penetration does not equal intimacy, but it's clear that my husband finds it the best source of intimacy. (Sorry if this is TMI.) Any advice on what to expect? (Provided there aren't surgical complications.) I appreciate sharing of experiences...because it gives me hope and strength. Angela

Help please. Is my band to tight?

Hi. I am getting ready for replacement or revision due to being left overfilled for several years. At this point I am completely unfilled in order to settle things down but the daily throwing up (not full vomiting but more than just PB) really took a toll on my stomach, esophogous, and nutrient levels. I'm just chiming in to wish you luck in getting this resolved and urge you not to wait too long like I did because other problems will result. Be persistent about someone figuring out what the cause is and listening to you. I have been unfilled now for a month and have maintained with just a three pound weight gain. It is worth it to feel like a normal person again and I am looking forward to moving forward this Thursday with a replacement band or revsion.
  14. The shoulder pain is really a phantom pain. You have heard of people having shoulder and left arm pain when they are having a heart attack. This is due to the fact that the nerves in our core interior run to the brain thru the same path as the nerves in our shoulder. What is happening is that your band is rubbing on your diaphram or some other organ inside of you. It is creating a pain response in the nerve at the location that your brain is interpreting as shoulder pain. The pain is not really in your shoulder and doing thing to your shoulder will not really relieve the pain. Most of us find that the pain goes away after the first week to week and a half. The calf pain and cramping is probably a potassium or dehydration issue. You are probably getting less Fluid and electrolytes then you think during the liquid phase. All food has fluids. Before you went on the liquid diet, you drank and ate. Now, you only drink so your intake of essential minerals and fluids are probably low. Try Powerade Zero, no calories, potassium and sodium. Beware, sodium will cause you to retain Water and you might mistake that for weight gain. As new bandsters, you will probably be on the scale a lot. (I was). You will learn that your weight flucuates due to water retention. I forgot to take my BP meds Fri and Sat, ate salty foods, and drank a lot of fluids. I gained 8 pounds in 24 hours. (all water weight). I am flushing it out today by drinking lots of water, avoiding sodium, and exercising. Bet it will all be gone tomorrow. Good luck to you all in your journey, learn from this site as there are a lot of great, knowledgable posters to learn from that will keep you from freaking out about your bodies adjustments. TJ

    What Am I doing?!?

I have neither seen nor needed a therapist. I had the required pre-op visit to see a psych, but that is all. She does not seem like a nut to you. Are you a therapist? Do you know anything about this person other than what she chooses to let you know about her through her posts? People can be anything they want to be online. For the record, my comment was not a slam on any one person. Listen, there are a lot of people who get this surgery that really should never have been considered for one reason or another (hiding an eating disorder or lying about being an alcoholic, for example). (I personally know of two people like this.) In fact, there are posts on this very board by people where it is screamingly obvious that they should not get this surgery - at least not till mental things are sorted out. My friend (who IS a licensed psychologist, BTW) has been lurking on this site to see what I have been reading because she is concerned about me getting this surgery. She flat-out told me that she worries that many people seem to be getting this surgery and that they really need psychiatric help instead. Thinking that a Lap-Band is a panacea will lead only to disappointment and - most likely - weight gain.
  16. This is a great post! It came right when I needed it. Been a little down, no loss in 3 wks, but I had a 4th fill today, so keep your fingers crossed! Ok, my list of things I hope to achieve/be able to do again thru weight loss: NOT have to sleep with 3 pillows, propping up so I can breathe NOT have my shirt ride up and "plub" pop out above my waistband when getting in the car Be able to buy a cute pair of boots that will zip all the way up my calves NOT be asked "When are you due?" (when not actually pregnant) Do active stuff on vacation like zip line, horseback riding, parasailing, etc Buy a cute bra with fun details, not an orthopedic, thick shoulder pads, old lady bra Be able to run into old friends without feeling the need to make an excuse for my weight gain ("been a sad couple years", "having health issues", etc)
  17. Surprising side effects of dehydration 3 days ago, Reluctantly Healthy In this episode "Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition" trainers and life coaches Chris and Heidi Powell educate host Judy Greer on the importance of staying hydrated. A huge plus for hydration, Judy says, is that it helps prevent wrinkles. But another unflattering side effect of dehydration is weight gain, Chris and Heidi caution. Even mild dehydration can slow down your metabolism by as much as 3%. Ninety percent of Americans are chronically dehydrated, and the body often misinterprets thirst for hunger. The effects are far from skin-deep: Lack of water is the #1 trigger for daytime fatigue and headaches. What's the best temperature for your water? It depends, Chris says. If you want to hydrate yourself quickly drink it cold. But if you want to fill up and suppress your appetite, choose warm because it stays in your system longer and expands the stomach, sending a signal to your brain that you're "full." Watch for more of Chris and Heidi's tips on hydration, including how to use your body weight to determine how much you should drink daily. http://screen.yahoo.com/surprise-side-effects-dehydration-050000603.html

Hi wl fam! Hows everyone's mending going? Im still getting some swelling at the top of my belly. Still feels weird around my belly button sometimes, a little pain. I tried putting a marble in to shape it but it bothered me. Hopefully it doesn't close up. Sometimes i get an itchy sensation around area but when i go to scratch it doesn't help because the area still has some numbness. Maybe its a ghost pannus itch[emoji3] Feeling a little down tho. Along with the swelling and some weight gain i have to wear some of my old bigger clothes. Its disheartening. But i will get it together. And hopefully the swelling will subside. Hope everyone is feeling better!
  19. I can relate, nprcowboy. I started Wellbutrin and Paxil in May and have gained 20+ lbs. Paxil is the most notorious SSRI for causing weight gain. I am now off of it and am losing weight again, but it just feels so unfair that a medication can throw such a monkey wrench into someone's weight loss! Best of luck to you!

Logging your daily intake of food and etc.?

I personally log it all and the times bc there may be certain foods contributing to weight gain and/ or bloating. they may have added ingredients im not paying attention too, so i can look back and see for sure if there is a consistency.

You Can Gain Weight With The Sleeve

  22. Sorry I didn't put much information about myself to the above question. Hello, I'm 37 years young, mother of 3 beautiful children. My Bmi is 43 right now, it often fluctuates between 40-43 depending on my weight gain or loss. I'm an active mother, wife, worker, and very healthy young woman to say the least. However, I'm sick and tired of the yo-yo dieting. I've taken diet supplements along with injection (and I'm scared to death of needles- but did them anyway) for years I know since 2013, I've been on a strick diet plan for over a year and lost only 7lbs from 250lbs of weight I already had on my 5'4" body frame. At weigh in just the other day and was back up 243lbs. So all that being said....... I'm more then ready, to use this WLS as an added tool to stay healthy and fit. But I just can't get the one person I felt that would understand, to understand!!!!! I love my life but I know that I have to do this for ME and I don't want it to seem as if I'm being selfish and not considering his concern for me..... I've had 3 c-section do to my children and those are the only surgeries I've every had & all went extremely well by the time we had our 3rd child I was up walking around on my own the very next day, the nursing staff didn't like that but I told them "I can't take you guys home with me, so I have to do this on my own, you all just supervise me cause I don't want anyone getting fired because I wouldn't let you hold my hand!" They understand and just simply walked behind me as I walked the halls of the hospital... so when, I'm determined I'm determined!!!!! Mind over matter!!!! Any October Bandsters!??!?!

Just checking in! I am not getting on the scale today. I'm scared my 283 was a fluke! So not going to weigh!!! I'm keeping that 51 lbs! Everyone says I look good. I can't really tell a difference yet. Clothes are fitting loser/better. Maybe have to get some new jeans soon. The ones I have are so nice but they are stretch and after like an hour they are falling off me. They fit nice when they go on right out of the wash/dryer! I have to share this story because only you guys will appreciate just how thoughtful this was. I belong to a Mommy/play group. One of the Mother's Husband is an Oncologist. I had read that cancer patients and bariatric patients drink a lot of the same protein drinks. So I asked her if her husband had any samples or anything in his office for his patients. He didn't have anything that was good for me, because he is encouraging weight gain usually and not weight lose. So, yesterday we went to their house for their son's first birthday party. He was so excited to see me, and he bought me 20 of the pre-made EAS drinks from Wal-Mart!! Now, we all know how much the pre-made drinks cost. How sweet was that???
  24. I had gbp ten years ago. I lost 150 lbs and now am regaining like crazy. I saw my doctor and my pouch was fine. Has anyone done band over bypass.

    Reflections from a Fat Chick

I got married the first time one month before turning 19. By twenty, I was fat. My first husband completely changed after we got married. He immediately started not coming home at night until 11:00 and was either fishing or golfing both days on the weekend. It got worse once we had kids. So, I made myself feel better by eating, eating and eating some more. I should have just kicked his butt out the door and saved myself all the weight gain. But, I can't say I have any regrets, because I did get two great kids out of the marriage.
