    Any April 2021 surgeries?!

Hi, I'm also 4 mos out with a stall between 192-195. I'm also became caretaker for my elderly Mom so lots of stress going on here. I know how that can impact a person's health but at least I'm not gaining. Still thrilled to be in "onederland" and really enjoying breaks I get from other fam members so I can do my. Reformer Pilates classes where my focus is now cardio/sculpt. I also hop on my treadmill at home buty water intake has really taken a dive. Need to work on that. The great news is that my A1c # for diabetes no longer requires meds. I'm so, so, happy about that🙂. Btw, my highest history of weight gain was 261, pre-op was 245 to 235 from the week fast, and now 192. Goal is 150 since I am 5'6". I had the revision from lap band to gastric sleeve. My niece had the bypass and she said that her stall required her to go back on protein shakes 3x a day un order to trigger more weight loss and so far she has lost 100 pounds. I think I will be trying that, too. Good luck to everyone and I love seeing the pics Mizzkay! You look awesome. Blueslily, thx for keeping this topic alive. I'm right there with you on the stall. We can do this! Sincerely, Trish
  2. Well here it goes. I had vertical banding years ago and my Dr. never indicated if soda was good or bad. In the beginning I could not because of the small pouch, but as I stretched it out soda was fine. BUT I do think soda did contribute to the stretching and expansion of the pouch, and in turn helped cause the weight gain and other issues I now have. I am having revision to Bypass and already steer clear of soda all together. I learned from B4. FYI: My son recently had the sleeve MLS and even though his Dr did not specifically say no to soda, he cannot handle the gas pain it causes.

    Keto vs. No Keto

Hello, everyone! It is great to be back, I haven't seen you all in almost two years. I had the sleeve in 11/2015 and to date, I've gained 40 pounds. I'm not happy with the weight gain, but I'm thankful it isn't a huge amount to lose. I had one bite of cake and you know the story, I was back in that crap routine of eating, crap. I'm focused now!! Alright, the point of this post. I'll get to it. ☺️ Keto or no Keto. Last October, I had to get my gall bladder out and since then, whenever I go overboard on fats, I know about it within hours. Therefore, 100% Keto isn't for me. HOWEVER, I read about Dirty Keto. Have any of you tried that and if so, what are your thought? Also, I downloaded Carb Manager, but I can't seem to get the numbers where I want them. This is what I'm aiming for: New carbs: 35 Fat: 23 Protein: 80 Calories: 80 Because this is set for Keto, it isn't letting me hit the numbers exactly. Do you think MyFitnessPal, would be a better fit? Thanks so much and again, it's great to be back! 🤗

    Skinny people problems

Well I am not skinny yet, but I used to be, and every time I would go out to eat, the server woukd ask me if my meal was ok because I only needed a few bites to fill me up, which left most of it on the plate! That's was years ago, before my sleeve, but see? That's how skinny people are skinny and stay skinny. They eat enough to satisfy themselves and that's that. Since I got fat, I don't like leaving food on my plate. Hey, I paid for it and I was gonna get my money's worth! I also NEVER brought home doggy bags when I was skinny, which at that time in my life I believed help me stay skinny. Also, when I was skinny, I was always so cold! I used to bring little granny sweaters with me to every restaurant, department store, and casino because the air conidiotinng was just too much. I used to practically run outside into 100 degree heat from an air conditioned building and just stand there and soak it up, like a cat through a sun filled window. Now all I do is sweat. It's been a LONG time since I've been cold due to my 100 lb weight gain, even in the snow lol! Last year I took my son skiing, and I was so HOT underneath all the gear. I wanted to start stripping layers and I was drenched in sweat underneath. Not fun. Not a good feeling. That never happened to me when I was skinny.

    Slow Losers - Unite!

I'm glad that you are feeling a bit better about the whole band process. I've gotten pretty down about it myself at times. I lost 55 lbs from July of 04 to August of 05, and then nothing until last month. Eesh. It gets so frustrating at times!! I don't like that doctors are 'fine' with 60%, and tell their patients not to expect any more than that. That 60% is an AVERAGE, which includes lots of people who lost 100% of their weight, and any people who haven't lost any weight, and everyone in between. I do think that as we get closer to goal, it will be harder to lose, but easier to maintain our weight with the help of the band, if that makes any sense. I'm sure that no one will have much of a problem for you to join the slow losers club. Well, to find out what's going on, I think we need more info! Are you tracking your calories n' stuff? Have you started exersizing (I know, it's horrible)? How much are you eating, and what are you eating? What does your doctor say? *hugs* Also, if you are working very hard, and not losing, go to your doctor and start demanding answers. Find posts on this site by Vinesqueen. She has worked her band as hard as it can be worked, and has lost I think 15 lbs total since being banded (she was down to 30, but gained 15 on a ONE THOUSAND CALORIE DIET!!!). She has been diagnosed with cushings disease and is being run through a gamut of tests, to try and find out what she can do to take the pounds off. Well, feeling better and having your blood suger be in control is good, right? What kinds of stuff are you eating? How many calories are you eating? And what does your doctor say? Like I said above, if you are following all the rules, your calorie levels are good, and you are exersizing, there has to be another part of the equation that isn't being addressed. Another thing to thing about is medications. Are you taking any medications that cause weight gain or anything? Is there an alternate medication you could be on? There are so many factors to weight loss sometimes, and it doesn't ALWAYS come down to calories in/calories out.

    Bandsters Rules

Great posts everyone!!! In addition to all the others: If you are struggling (even if you are not): Journal what you eat and how much. This will help you be accountable to yourself and more conscious of the choices you make. I know most of my eating issues are around my "unconscious" (or maybe just "oblivious") eating. Plan to learn to eat the way you want to eat for the rest of your life as soon as you can after banding. Don't go on a diet - develop an eating plan that works for you and your lifestyle. Once you get to your goal, you can introduce higher quanitities of food, but if you haven't learned what to eat and how much, that is recipe for weight gain. Know yourself and your challenges. Then make a plan to accomodate those challenges. I am an evening eater and experience lots of head hunger in the evenings. Refusing to snack is not realistic for me. Instead I plan Snacks that are low calorie and low fat, but that still satisfy my urges. In a nutshell - gain consciousness and plan!!!! Don't expect the band to do the job for you. Good Luck!!!

    So... What too EAT??

Congrats!! I am 29 weeks pregnant, and didnt start gaining until i was about 22 weeks, now i am up 15 pounds, I know that seems like a lot but my ob was worried since I wasnt gaining. You know with the nausea you just eat what you can. I had a total unfill at 11 weeks b/c the nausea was so bad, i also had kidney stones and had to up my fluid intake. just eat well, meat fruits and veggies and you will be fine, enjoy the no weight gain while it lasts lol, it will come as the baby grows. i would still drink skim milk though the fat you are probably using more than the baby this early in the game, my ob said in the 2nd trimester 200 add'l calories and the 3rd 350-400 addl cal. that;s just 2 cookies!! you know the cravings get you sometimes! congrats!!!

    Going crazy and need advice

The same thing happened to me when I started running. When you first begin exercising it can cause some water weight gain in your muscles. It will come back off in week or so. Exercise stresses our bodies and that plays a roll.

    All of my December sleevers...

Curvy jones how is the weight gain for some after sleeve and bypass explained? I'm only 4.5 months out and still battling gastritis and inflammation so my restrictions are more than most and my diet is 98% full liquid but I hear stories of ppl gaining 30 40 50 even 100+ After several years post op Weight gain is explained by eating around your sleeve, usually. You can eat the wrong things that are slider foods, high in calories, and you can eat more often. It would be super easy to eat over 3000 calories a day if you did that. What I've found now is that I have to watch every calorie. I do follow the rules for the most part, but a little indiscretion at this point is a big deal. When you are at or close to goal, you don't have much wiggle room. A few extra calories every day really can pack on the pounds.

    un-proportionate

Please don't stop your cardio. It is vital to your health and fitness. Quitting your cardio will accomplish nothing other than decreasing your weight loss on increasing your weight gain. Do your research. It is a fact that you cannot target weight loss. You can target toning through certain weight training and resistance exercising, but that WILL NOT affect the fat in those areas. A quick Google search for "Spot Reduction" will turn up countless reliable results all explaining that it is just not possible. Here's a quick article: http://www.truestarhealth.com/members/cm_archives11ml3p1a2.html
  11. Sorry I can't give you advice from someone who has done this. But I'm sure if you talk to your bariatric team and a nutritionist about your concerns they will help you come up with a game plan. I would think that if you develop a healthy lifestyle including an exercise routine that kind of excessive weight gain in pregnancy can be avoided. Don't go eating crap food again just because you're pregnant and "eating for two".

    Long Term Effects

Carbonated drinks (sodas, beer, etc.) is a real no-no. It's not the calories that are a problem, but rather the carbonation. The carbonation swells and stretches the pouch. Do that enough times and stretch the pouch, then it takes more food to fill you up and make you feel full. Eat more to fill you up = eventual weight gain.
  13. slowtogo

in dire need of a soda!

I think bottom line its calories in equals weight gain. I notice at about eight months out the carbonation doesn't bother me much, but I still notice it..I would imagine if you were to drink two or three drinks like we probably used to pre surgery then yes, it might well affect your pouch. One or two sips? Probably not. But...I met a lady prior to my surgery that had gastric bypass about 10 years ago, and she was 400 lbs if she was an ounce. She told me, (when I told her that I wasn't sure I could give pop up) you can do that! (I.e. drink pop) no you can't. Not unless you want to go back to where you were weight wise. Pop is a small price to pay for skinny jeans and turning guys heads. I hated being fat. I hated being prejudiced against. I hated looking in the mirror. I hated clothes shopping. I hated my hubby looking at other women all the time. I don't love pop that much to lose all these other things I have retrieved back in my life.

Slow Users-Banded a year or more

I just wanted to, as a nurse, that there are low dose birth control methods that you can try that do not cause weight gain. My fav is the NuvaRing. Its the lowest dose of hormone possible and it only works where it needs to and doesn't effect the entire body like oral pills do. Hope this helps because as i want you to lose the weight I don't want you to get pregnant if you don't want to .

    Going Out To Eat

dorrie - my husband is the same. His metabolism is still doing him a few favors, but he'll turn 40 next year and his luck can only last so long. He has recently crossed into thye "obese" threshold - he's between 6'4 and 6'5 and about 270, all if it is carried in his middle torso (stomach, "love handles", etc.) He is a horrible volume eater. We went to a bakery Saturday and I picked up 10 stuffed rolls - about 6 of which I planned to bring to people at work today. These things are about 5" across, so we aren't talking about small dinner rolls. Sunday when I went to pack them up they were all gone. He'd eated all 10 in less than 1 day, in addition to whatever regular meals we'd had. I can't tell you how many times I've gone to make something for dinner, but can't find it and when I ask him if he knows where the this or that is, he's like, "Oh I ate that..." There goes dinner! Now - I make him a week's worth of breakfasts every Sunday. So he has a nice, balanced breakfast. He takes leftovers for lunch most days, or eats out. And if I don't make dinner (which I do 95% of the time) then I make sure he has something. I also make sure he has Snacks at work (he has had bouts of hypoglycemia since he was about 8, controlled through diet). He still eats - usually another full meal - as soon as he gets home from work, and then I generally start dinner about 2 or 3 hours later. He thinks he eats healthy because his favorite snack is lowfat yogurt with granola, but he doesn't the quart-sized yogurt tubs should last longer than 3 servings! He truly doesn't care. He will refuse to eat lowfat products (other than the yogurt) - sour cream, milk, butter, etc. He has no idea how many calories he eats. If he's hungry, he eats what he wants, and as much of it as he wants, period. I worry about his health - but like you said, I can't make him care. I can just try and figure out ways to plant the seeds. (I can't really say much about his weight gain considering I used to make fun of how "tent-like" his pants were... you know... the 36x36 pants he wore that I used to be able to swim in... I may be a hypocrite but I have my limits...!) I guess the related point of all that is - splitting a meal isn't really an option. He doesn't do well with less than his entire meal, and then some. Plus we like completely different foods (he's a big red meat/steak eater, I'm not at all). Luckily I can split with DH, who eats whatever mommy or princesses eat.

    July 2006 Band Crew

ok ok.... seems like we have a good group of "newbies" July banders I have high hopes of this working out for me (and you all) but I still worry about my history of losing weight, gaining it back, losing weight.... and so on.... I'm guessing I may have lost and gained several people by now. My mind is starting to play tricks on me.... like... "hey matt, isn't this the time you eat potato chips?" "hey matt, remember mcdonalds...mmmmmmm big macs" obviously I'll need to retrain myself on eating habits.... but dang.....*sobs* I sooo sooooooo likey sour cream and onion potato chips! then there is the burden of the "pressure" that I feel family is adding to me. I mean, they are watching to see how I do. My dad offered to pay for my brothers banding if I am successfull. (which I'm not complaining, however I saved it all by myself for 3 years) Then, being so far from my doc, what happens if I mess up and have a slippage of the band? hmmmm mo money mo money fills, fills, fills, that's the rub isn't it..... you think you are done paying ... then the fills.... sure... I have free fills from my doc.... but I have to spend 400 for the flight to get there..... grumble grumble grumble I WANT MAGIC DANGNABIT..... a automatic pill to lose all the weight I want without working to dang hard to do it basically this was a complain session and worry session... I'm happy I chose to be banded... and I made a life choice.... it's the unknown future that concerns me what happens if I still have the band and turn 70 and start forgetting about it..... ooops... pb pb pb... *lol* I think to much!! what are your worries? however crazy *s*

    Fear About Losing Too Much

Even if you lose under your personal goal, from what I have read of people 24-36 months post-op, there is sort of a "bounce-back" of weight gain--usually between 7-15 lbs. I don't mind being a little under goal because if it happens to me I will be right where I wanted to be in the first place. Being under goal by 13 lbs, I don't feel skinny; I feel slender. I'm 5'8". I stopped losing at 14 months post-op as I added in more food and higher-calorie Snacks. If you can't finish a snack, put it away for later. I often do. Also, I keep snacks in the car and my purse so that I can get in more calories when I am away from home without eating junk food.
  18. Oh, Girls, I got very concerned after reading a thread on another website. The person sounded just like us and was 4 years out telling she had regained 60 pounds!!!! Then others started talking about weight gain too 50+ lbs. then I realized it was a RNY forum. but.... Yikes!

Gonna Get To Goal. Wanna Join Me?

Coops, I have been eating around 1200... and slightly lower carbs...around 70.... Yesterday I ate around 1500 and still lost .4...go figure. My weight is going down. I thought I was going to stay on the same plateau forever... but I have hope to reach goal now! I am 3 pounds from "Normal" and 7 from goal (will probably adjust down another 8-10 as a cushion... that will take me another 10 years to lose!) You can do it! Slow and steady wins the race! I have changed how I eat.. more greens (Kale) raw and cooked, more veggies, flax oil, flax/almond butter, blueberries and more organic produce, grass fed eggs... more Omega 3... I don't eat meat or fish so I am working on getting other sources...fresh local walnuts... less sugar....I read in prevention mag something about omega3(spring fats) vs omega6(hibernation fats) in the diet and weight gain... so I figured it wouldnt hurt, and it hasn't! http://www.prevention.com/food/smart-shopping/vanishing-youth-nutrient?page=2

    ❤ APRIL 2019 CHALLENGE❤

DAY 14: Declutter. I'm doing a "mental" declutter. I'm throwing out all of the negative thoughts I had when I had a weight gain. I thought I had prepared myself for any situation with this WLS. The gain hit me hard, because in the past I would say just forget it and keep eating. Regain all of the weight back. I'm definitely not going to fall back into that pattern again. I started over, writing down everything I put in my mouth. Got rid of the protein crisps and cookies. Not going to jump on the scale yet. I still have some more mental decluttering to do.
  21. Well anyway - I love Mexico. I like to go on vacation in Mexico, have opted for surgery in Mexico, and oh how I wish I had some of the corn on the cob with red pepper that they sell on the street in Mexico. I once saw a man pick up an orange, cut it in half, and fill up an 8 oz. glass with juice from that one orange in Mexico. It was delicious. I have never been mistreated, harmed during surgery, nor have I ever been afraid of my surroundings. The doctors and nurses that I encountered in Mexico were very informative, professional, and they did their jobs. I was a chunky girl most of my life. Lose weight, gain it back. That was the story. I chose Mexico because I couldn't qualify under my insurance at the time and I didn't have the outrageous amount of money they wanted if I just paid outright. I got exactly what I asked for in Mexico and they charged me a price I could pay. I love those guys. This time tomorrow I will be 49 years old. I will walk out my door in the morning and not look like a larda**. And that is thanks to my Dr in Mexico.
  22. I keep meeting people that are morbidly obese, yet say that they hardly eat anything everyday. What? It really comes down to an overabundance of daily calories and lack of exercise when you are more than 100 pounds overweight. It just seems that some have the hardest time admitting that they are an overeater. Even on this forum, I have read posts from others saying they never over ate and got very obese from psych meds and hypothyroidism alone. Sorry, no. Meds and thyroid problems will not cause more than a 10-25 pound weight gain. Such denial will really get in the way of weight loss success after surgery.
  23. Reality: I've had hypothyroidism for the past eight years and have been on psych meds. I never mentioned steroids, which I know contributes to weight gain. My last blood panel still showed my thyroid was still low and it does make weight loss a struggle, but not impossible. I had surgery almost 11 months ago and I remember how frustrating it was the first few months post op. Like you, I had to reduce my calories to around 600 for the first 6 months. I never mentioned that hypothyroidism and meds mean nothing. In fact, I mentioned that they do contribute to weight gain. If the two are combined with crappy eating (overeating, junk food), then it is quite easy to get 100 pounds overweight. The point I was trying to make was that there are SOME people that are somewhat reluctant to recognize faults or problems in themselves. In other words, denial. You have to be honest about the kinds and amount of food you ate before surgery. You have to come to terms with your denial. If you stay in denial, it may keep you from having the responsibility for yourself. If you fool yourself into believing that you don't eat much everyday, then it is easy to deny responsibility for your obesity. This will keep you from changing behaviors that are necessary in order to successful after weight loss surgery. Then there are those that rationalize their obesity (excuses, excuses, excuses) or create defense mechanisms. Unpleasant emotions are created when we realize what we have done to get morbidly obese and many create excuses (blaming morbid obesity solely so on genetics, society, a medication) to keep these emotions at bay. We all know that it is hard to lose weight and keep it off. Learning all those new behaviors and giving up your favorite food is difficult. A healthier body will result from your having a healthier mindset.

    January Bandsters???

Hi! I would try to stay off the scales if I were you. The weight gain that you are experiencing is probably due to fluid imbalance/redistribution. My doctor said not to pay attention to the scale until after you get a fill. He said that your body needs a good 6 weeks to heal itself. It sounds like you are doing well. I am only 6 days post-band. I am so tempted to get on the scale, but at the same time kind of afraid. I lost 16lbs on the pre-surgery diet. I hope I've lost more despite of what my MD says about the 1st 6 weeks being a time for healing and not weight loss. Best of luck to you-Gigi:)
  25. Yes, the pre op diet is terrible and it was the worst part of the process for me . Due to weight gains when close to surgery my Dr made me do a 3-week pre op diet, which was horrific. Just follow their instructions and it will be worth it in the end. The doctors know what they're doing and this is great way to begin the process of losing lots of weight.
