    Nov 2020 Bypass Peeps?

    It's always good to ask to make sure. It is not to say I didnt feel anything...just nothing that made me go "ouch!". I still feel "stuff" inside. Mostly to the lower left. I am assuming that is where the bypass happened? So when I lie on my side (which took about 10 days before I really tried to) it's almost like I feel things moving around if that makes sense?. And sometimes right between my chest I feel something...like, tightness. I go tomorrow at noon to get my stitches taken out (I had a lapband removal as well) and will ask about the above. I am curious to see my scars! lol

    Why do I feel guilty?

    700-900 kcal a day does not seem excessive given your current weight. You're only 19 days post-op. Focus on sticking with the eating plan you were given and hitting both protein and water goals. Give your new tummy and your prescribed eating plan a chance to work. I was also fearful that surgery would not yield successful results for me but it turned out that what has worked for so many others, worked for me too! Give it a chance. 😊

    WHEN did you start REALLY WORKING OUT?

    There are a ton of free workouts online. Go to Youtube or google free workouts. You can do anywhere from 10 - 60 min workouts of any kind - cardio, strength with body weight), even walking for those rainy days. Your body will tell you what you can do. If it starts feeling uncomfortable, stop. I am only 3 weeks out so I walk 2-3 times a day for 30 min. I am looking forward to switching up my routine and doing other workouts. However, Its chilly where I am and I do like the walks with the crisp air - it refreshes my mind.

    Nov 2020 Bypass Peeps?

    I’m 19 days out. A little frustrated as I’m still in some pain. I’m a teacher and haven’t been able to go back to work yet. I’ve never been one for time off work-think it’s been 5 years since I was last off sick so it’s got me down a little! Going to see my consultant this afternoon after I called to say I was still in pain. Reading all your responses it seems as if everyone is really different in healing time so I’m sure it’s nothing to worry about but I just want to get out and about again! My wife and I moved in with my parents in the summer to save for a house deposit so I have my mother fussing around me constantly (shouldn’t complain really!) but feeling a little caged in! The pain is quite bad in the car so I haven’t driven yet. Haven’t commented much but it’s fab reading everyone’s stories-makes me feel better! On a brighter note, I am down 32 pounds so pretty happy with that!

    I totally get it! But we probably wouldn't see it as others would. I feel I see it already and I am only at 10 pounds. I am really watching the carb and fat intake and I feel that the fat is coming off faster than the pounds. My face looks thinner. My stomach definitely has gone down. I haven't tried on clothes yet, other than track pants and sweaters....the covid style! I may do that this weekend and see how things feel. But like you, I don't want to be disappointed.

  7. Hi. I'm 19 days post WLS today and on my pureed diet period. I feel hungry and eat 3 meals and 2-3 snacks a day, in small portions of course. Count the calories of every meal and snack. Between 700-900 kcal a day. I feel guilty after eating. Think I must starve to loose more weight. Have constant feeling that I'm not going to loose anymore weight. Putting on instead.     Notgivingup2 and Gradycat I am in a similar situation as the two of you. Maybe as a threesome we can help each other. I was sleeved Jan 26 2016 along with a hernia repair and gallbladder removal. I got down to 217 and was told by my back Doctor that skin removal might help my back. Not being able to walk due to 6 herniated disc, spinal stenosis and radiculopathy he thought getting rid of the excess skin would help. So I had 4 excess skin removal surgeries from 2017 till 2019. The last surgery in June 2019 resulted in 3 months of complication including MRSA. I was on 2 IV's of Vancomycin of 2 to 5 hours a day and could do nothing and I started gaining weight. By the time the pandemic hit I was up about 15 pounds to 232 pounds and now I am up another 25 to 257 After all my hard work to lose over 280 pounds I never dreamed I would have a regain. What a fool I was, however I am thrilled I have managed to keep off 240 pounds. In Nov I went back to another surgeon and he gave me a diet pill which has caused ringing in my ears within 2 weeks of taking it. I did lose 7 pounds but as soon as I went off the pill I gained that 7 pounds back. I have got to get this under control and head back down. Have you both started doing anything to see the scales going down? With Christmas coming I need to really watch as I will not let myself get to 260.

    4 onz of food?

    I never ate that much for months. A quarter to a third of a cup was the norm for me. It would take 3 days to eat 2 scrambled eggs. I ate three times a day & at about month 3 I started slowly adding an afternoon snack of yogurt &/or fruit. At 19 months out I eat about 3 oz of protein. I do eat more vegetables than when I was losing (about 1/2 cup now) & have more snacks. Last night I had a bare cup of bolognese ( mince beef, onions, celery, carrot, tinned tomato) over 35 mins & it was more than enough. At 5 weeks I could eat about 1/4 cup of the same. Don’t push yourself to eat to a specific amount. Just make sure you’re meeting your protein goals. We can only eat what we can eat. Eat slowly until you feel like you’ve had enough. (It takes time for the message you’re full to get through.) You don’t want to eat too much or eat until you’re over full. I can take 20 mins to an hour to eat. I’m a believer in putting my fork down between bites, waiting before I take another & asking do I really need (not want) that next bite. Some people can & do eat more. Others less. You just have to work out what is the right amount for you & your body within your program. Good luck & congrats on your surgery.
  10. I like built bars. They are chewy, like a candy bar. They range from 130-180 kcals and 4-5 net grams sugar/carb with 17-19 G protein. I honestly haven’t paid much attention to the fat content. I only eat about 3-4 per week total though, so probably doesn’t matter too much for me.

    December 2020

    I had mine 12/2. Not quite able to eat an entire jello cup, but drinking water and gatorade from the little med cups. I have my post op surgeon video call Thursday, which I assume will graduate me to the phase 2 diet with protein shakes. It's nice to start having the stomach gas start to subside, I have been doing 10 minute walks twice daily. What are you guys experiencing?
  13. WHEN did you start REALLY WORKING OUT? I'm 2 months post-op from the sleeve and mostly happy with my weight loss. I've been walking, doing a little yoga, stretching, and a little light weight training at home with a 5/10/15 kettlebell set my brother gave me for my August birthday. However, now I really want to tone up more. I'm thinking of braving my local Recreation Centers that have great weight/circuit training/cardio equipment in January or February 2021 when I'm 3 months or 4 months out. Of course, my plans will be dependent on the ever-growing COVID-19 numbers drastically decreasing. (Man, Listen---I'm not happy at all that I paid my yearly dues in February and then the Va Beach Rec Centers closed in March. ) When did you really start doing dedicated workouts? If you work out at home, what do you do? Did you invest in any equipment?
  14. LOOKING For a GOOD, Reasonably Priced Fitness Tracker I bought a Fitbit in 2016 and did not use it until 2019. It died in early 2020 while I was doing my pre-op weight loss diet. I don't want to spend quite so much this time around. Amazon and a bunch of other vendors have a slew of low-cost fitness trackers. Some are modeled on Fitbit, some look like large-face wrist-watches. Anybody have a good experience with any of these? Links and your reviews/opinions appreciated!
  15. How was your Thanksgiving? Mine was quiet and low-key---just my 17-year-old son and I. Usually we gather with my two brothers and their families, but with the COVID-19 numbers going crazy high in Southeastern Virginia we decided to sit Family Thanksgiving 2020 out and wait until Christmas. I got a 14 pound turkey at Kroger for under $5.00 (great sale!) and cooked low-fat versions of the traditional side-dishes for my son. He has lost 15 pounds since I began my WLS journey. I'm proud he has been open to making changes. I was prepared to just have turkey and a little low-fat gravy.....but then I added 2 tablespoons each of mashed potatoes, dressing, and green bean casserole. Not a good move. Even though I could NOT FINISH my very small portions, I felt ill. AND....I gained 4 pounds. What!? Took me a week and a half to lose those 4 pounds PLUS lose 2 more. I was incredibly annoyed with myself! Happy to be back on track now. Looking ahead to Christmas, we will do Christmas day dinner with the family. And I will stick to my plan! Anyone else making plans/guidelines for Christmas?

    Hello! I had my gastric sleeve on 12/01. Overall, things are going well! When I woke up from my anesthesia, I am pretty sure I was half delirious and obnoxious, but I only remember bits and pieces. The first night was pretty tough. The first time they got me up to walk, I was overcome with nausea and thought I would pass out, only made it a few steps. BUT, after that, it was very good progress and soon I was walking all the way down the hall and back. I have not had to take any nausea medicine since being home, and I only take Tylenol for pain rather than the prescription opioid they gave me. Also taking anti-blood clot injections twice a day, and oxygen at night. At home, I have been good at hitting my liquid goals. The protein goal was a little harder for me, and I had to work my way up to hitting it for the first time yesterday. Each day the pain gets a little better. This morning I was able to sleep on my side for the first time in a week, which felt wonderful, since I'm not really a back sleeper. My stomach wounds look pretty gnarly. There is one that is indented into my fat, and I now call it my second belly button! Haha. One weird side effect is that my hands suddenly looked 20 years older. The skin was all wrinkly and loose. I put some firming cream on them, and they are doing better now. All I can think about is food. It is everywhere around me. I watch TV and see a pizza commercial. I look at the internet and see recipes. My husband cooks his dinner, and the smell is so tantalizing. I keep thinking if I could only have one bite, it would be the best bite in the world. I think I just miss the flavors since I am on liquids. Finally, I am a bit amazed and worried about how fast I am losing weight. Of course, that was the whole point of this, but I can't help but wonder if it is healthy, since it is basically starvation on a liquid diet. I am down 17 pounds in 8 days (includes the 2-days pre-op on liquid diet). Eek! I suppose it will stop or slow down soon. Well, thanks for listening to my story! Good luck to everyone else.

    Nov 2020 Post Op Thread

    First ever post. I lost approx 20+ lbs pre-op. I had VSG on 11/19. Since surgery, I've lost about 8 pounds in the first week and then constipation and stall set in, before week 2. I have only lost 2 pounds since then and it fluctuates up and down. 10 lbs total in almost 3 weeks post-op is quite disappointing to me. I was so looking forward to that big drop in the first month! However, I feel good. Gas and nausea were excruciating for the first 2 days, but after that I've felt good and getting better every day. Some days I really lack energy. I'm trying to walk a mile or do a walking video every day. Clothes are getting bigger. I'm struggling with getting my fluid and protien when I eat too. If I do food, supplement with shakes, and get all my fluid in, while adhering to the "30" rule, I'm consuming something constantly. If I take a break, I get behind and am drinking at midnight. It would be easier just to do protien shakes only, but I enjoy warm and savory after so many sweet shakes. Also, I can eat about 1/2 cup of pureed or a cup of broth or thin soup. That worries me, because so many others seem to struggle to get in 1/4 cup. My brain is swirling with silly thoughts of the sleeve not being small enough or that I won't lose enough during this honeymoon period... blah, blah, blah!     Hard to lose 9 lbs by December 16tj

    I lost 20+ pounds on the pre-op liquid diet. As everyone above said, focus on protein (60-80 g every day) and zero/low-calorie natural liquids (water, tea, broth, strained soup, etc.). Use an app like Baritastic to log everything you ingest, and try to stay below 1,000 calories a day. Juicing is no good, as a cup of juice can have 100+ calories and 10-20 grams of sugar. Multiply that by the number of cups of juice you drink in a day, and voila! stubborn pounds...

    One Year - Uncertainty

    I'm quite relieved to read this post. I am at 19 months and have also found that I can eat almost anything and in much larger quantities than I could even at one year. I also sort of wish that I still felt the same restriction (and lack of appetite) we all experienced early in this process. Like all of you, I re-gained about 10 pounds from my low weight, and I think I actually look and feel better as a result. I am still pretty vigilant about avoiding carbs, sugar and fat, and I also eat what could be considered "normal" sized portions for a person without a large appetite. I do slip up from time time (particularly when invited to dinner at friends' houses) without any ill effects. So far it hasn't had much of an impact, but I do worry whether this will be the case for the next 10 years or longer.

    A normal day of food post op?

    Nearly 6 months post op. I've lost exactly 20% of my weight which was my goal for 6 months. My daily "goals" are 70 protein 70 (or less) carbs and under 1000 calories. I know most people eat less but I've been hungry since month 2 and these goals are manageable for me. I hit them pretty much every day. Here's my honest to goodness a typical day. Sometimes I eat healthier: Morning Smoothie: 0% Fage Greek yogurt, PB2 powder, Almond Banana Milk, fresh spinach, and chocolate stevia drops. (23 protein, 13 carbs, 180 calories. Lunch: 1/2 cup 2% cottage cheese with a teaspoon of Ranch dressing and a small chopped tomato. (12 protein, 10 carb, 100 calories) and 1/4 cup dry roasted sunflower seeds (6 protein, 5 carb, 160 calories) I used to do a meat like chicken or fish instead of the seeds but I found these help me stay regular. Struggling to poop has made me miserable since surgery so I eat these seeds every day. Afternoon Snack: IF I'VE HAD 48 oz of water then I treat myself with this every day: 1 cup fairlife chocolate milk (14 protein, 13 Carb, 140 calories) 2 shots espresso (25 calories), Squirt of whipped cream (25 calories) DInner: 2-3 oz chicken, or steak, or shrimp, or turkey. Small serving of cooked or raw veggie, 1 oz starchy carb like potato, rice, corn (it's literally 3 small bites worth but it helps me digest my protein). Dessert/Treat: Chocolate almonds, cocomel caramels, or the like. Usually about 160 calories of candy. This is the part I should not have and usually makes me nausous. On occasion I skip it but not often. Average about 56oz of water a day.
  21. It is scary - I was very anxious about the endoscopy and particularly about the surgery. But it really is amazing that the surgery (in my case RNY) means that you don't feel the hunger and can't over eat because of the restriction. My bloods went from borderline diabetic to well below within 10 days after the bypass. I knew my liver was "fatty" but my surgeon showed me the photos and told me it was borderline cirrhotic - losing weight is the only thing I can do to improve this. So I know I made the right decision. These days it's a very safe procedure but you're bound to feel anxious about it - everybody does.

    Sleeved at UVA

    I was sleeved 8/19 by Dr. Schirmer! I feel like the experience was different than many people on here (no true psych eval, no pre-diet, pre-weight loss; just one appt before the surgery to go over risks, meet with a nutritionist, and sign papers) but overall I've enjoyed the experience post-op. I will say I wish there was more aftercare. There's a 1 month and 3-month check-in but no long term followup plan like those who go to a non-hospital affiliated clinic Typing on my phone but if there's more you want to know in detail I can explain further!
  23. Sss that is good info. I too have a weight that triggers me but my fear is that it will no longer be as controllable. I’ve been about 5-10 lbs from my ultimate goal which I kinda like because it means I’m never quite finished (mental thing I guess). We all know the rush you get when stepping on the scale and knocking off a chunk of weight you thought you were stuck with for life. That make the counting calories and everything more important. When u kinda stabilize, it does seem easy to stop weighing, etc. it’s amazing how much of this is mental in addition to the physical tool we chose to take advantage of. Thank you everyone for your thoughts. It really does help to hear from others!

    One Year - Uncertainty

    I gained 10-12 pounds during COVID and I'm slowly, SLOWLY, getting it back off. But I was eating candy bars and cookies and totally disregarding my diet. Now I'm refocused on protein and water and no sweets.
