To Anybody Who Has Been Banded
DollyRose replied to MELANIE's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
oooohhh... as with any weight loss program, including banding, you are bound to experience times where the weight just doesn't move, period. You might not be eating enough calories or too many, you might be eating the wrong calories, and you might have to add 10 or 15 more minutes to your exercise plan, or you may be increasing muscle mass AND losing weight. You did not say if you have gained weight, so I am going to assume you haven't, and that is something to be proud of! Don't get down in the dumps! Nothing is wrong with you, just step back and take a close look at what your current eating plan is as well as your current exercise plan. It has taken 20 years for me to pack on 120+ pounds, I expect it to take at least 2 and perhaps 3 years to take it off. It didn't go on overnight, it won't come off overnight. DollyRose -
Gastric Band Or Gastric Bypass? Need To Decide
KristyT replied to Bwilson21b's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
you can definitely lose as much weight as you want through the lapband, it just depends on you. mortality rate for lapband is 1 in 2000 mortality rate for gastric bypass is 1 in 200, the thing about the bypass that i would not like is the dumping syndrome, I dont have time to stay on the commode all day long. with the lapband I have retrained my body on how to eat properly because that is what the tool does, my indigestion is gone, my bowels are regular and I can still enjoy all the foods I like just in smaller portions. the advantage of the bypass i would say is the weight loss if very rapid where as with the lap band it is slower for some. the lapband is reversable and the bypass is not. you should do some research and compare the 2 and then decide for yourself. I cant really compare because i dont know much about the bypass other than the things I have read but the lapband is good for me because I feel like for once in my life I am in control of the food that I eat. good luck to you and your decision -

3 weeks into it and I don't know what to expect
cludgie replied to gordatoflaca's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
It is so hard to really know what to expect, and everyone's journey is completely individual, but what you are feeling is perfectly normal. I think I am a pretty slow loser, but someone advised me a few weeks out that "normal" 6 week post op weight loss is 26lb or above, I was almost exactly that at 6 weeks out, and it was hard seeing people sleeved the same time as me who had lost easily double that, but I had the sleeve instead of other surgeries so that it could be a small part of my life rather than the focus of it, so I possibly don't diet as hard as some people, or excercise as much, but I am sticking with a regeime which is comfortable, and I am thankful for every lb that I lose. Another really good bit of advice I was given was don't push your new stomach if it isn't ready. I know some people on here who didn't start to try mushies until 3 or more months post op. I am 3 months post op, and avoid anything bread like, anything too sugary as it makes me feel like I'm having a heart attack, and I always eat my Protein first. Some days I just don't want to eat, so I'll go back to Soups and shakes, and the biggest thing I have still got to learn is to slow down! I will still wolf food down and end up making myself sick, but it took me 31 years to develop my bad habbits, and it'll take me a while to train my mind out of them. Your weight loss is fantastic, and it will work for you, so be kind to yourself and let the magic happen! Big hugs Cx -
Congrats on your weight loss and I feel so happy that you Accepted Christ in your life. You are doing awesome all around!

karely007 12/11/12 WLS - experienceing doubts ???? i feel you should go with your first wise decision/thought you have your younger age in your favor - most "older" sleevers (30+ ) say how they wish they had done WLS years earlier i was an old fart of 58 when i had my WLS best thing i ever did - but wish i had been 23 years young when i had the procedure need to be very committed, determined to have this procedure - if you think you'll go in to the hospital on a friday and go home on monday 100 lbs lighter??? think again!!!!{my mom thought that was what would happen to me] the sleeve is here to help you lose the weight - you have to work with it for the rest of your life, but you have a lot to gain - and lose you have to change your food habits, small portions, drinking et al - but it will change the rest of your life for the better you will become healthier during this process - i took diabetes meds/insulin - High blood pressure meds - wore CPAP - no longer IMO plastic surgery shouldn't be done until AFTER you've had WLS "they" say that your body will "settle" over the next couple of years exercising during your weight loss period and after will help firm things up a bit, - then if you still need/want PS - great!!! plastic surgeon who told you you weren't fat enough for the WLS - and he's worked on "fatter" people with good results??? not fat enough - left handed compliment OMG if you have tried to lose weight a few times only gaining it back + , and if you have co-morbities that would qualify you for surgery - IMO go for it good luck

eureka2578 replied to xnuyawkas's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
hi, i had my surgery on 4/15/08 and i'm having alot of the same feelings that you have described. i have broken down in tears twice now watching my family eat real meals while i sip broth. i also find myself getting angry with my husband for continuing to make a big event out of dinner (pizza last night and a cook out for the extended family tonight) but i know he doesn't mean anything. i am so sorry to hear about your loss and i hope that all of us who are experiencing this sadness will cope and come out ok in the end. my prayers are with you:smile2: -
Advice Needed During Wait
BettyG replied to tracybshaw's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
My insurance does require 6-months of medically-supervised weight loss, but I had the same worry -- that I would lose too much and disqualify myself. My nutritionist assured me that if I got close to that, she would put me on a maintenance diet. Do you have access to a nutritionist? They can help you maintain your weight without eating crap. Thank you so much for reply I g and sharing your success. After looking through the posts I was surprised at the low wt losses and backsliding. I want/need to practice mindful eating going forward and your success is proof it can be done.

Hi guys!!! I was on a losing streak for a while and made my thanksgiving day goal early! Now I am stalled! I went up 2 lbs and have been losing a few oz.'s at time. I wanted to hit onderland by christmas, but, looks like I may have to move it to new years!!! But, I am so thankful for my sleeve. I am able to eat everything and more than I thought I was gonna be able to. which I am kinda greatful for too, because one of my biggest fears was that I wouldnt be able to eat at all. Anywho! People are starting too notice the weight coming off (74 since I started my pre op diet) and I feel good about myself. I am 4 months out and still have a long way to go, but, I am so happy. I wish I had done this sooner!!! No regrets!!! except for the hair loss! LOL!, but, I'm dealing! But, I discovered Joan rivers hair powder. It works awesome. I have thinning hair at my part and crown, this powder stuff hides my shiny scalp and boosts my confidence!!! Yay!

Hello everyone, I am a new to the whole idea of lapband. I overheard something about it on tv but I did not get the whole story. If someone could fill me in on all the pro's and con's about it. Like how much does it cost, is it easy to find a Dr., how would I even start to find a Dr.? I'm 27 single mother of two (6yr and 2 month old) I'm 5'7 and 265 lbs. I want to have energy for my kids and be there for them when they get older. I hardly fill full and when I do I'm hungry less than a half hour later. Would I be a good canidate for the whole thing or should I try something else. I was thinking about the bypass surgey but I dont really like the chance of lossing my hair, (it's getting thinner everyday anyways). So if someone could help me make sense of it all I would really appreciate it.:rose:

I Drank Alot Of Broth.... Help Please!
smileen replied to Magsnlucy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was told by my nut. to have no more than 1/3C at each meal until my 3rd month then 1/2C. so I measured it out in a bowl and eat slowly then I don't have to worry about overdoing. It was explained to me why it seems we can eat more when on liquids is that the stomach is like a funnel the fluid goes in and drains out quickly as you begin eating thicker food they will take longer to funnel out thats one of reasons not to drink with meals so it will not pass through quickly and we stay fuller longer! Good weight loss! -

I would suggest bringing your own Snacks to meetings that might be a little longer & you know might be tempting. Something as simple as a Protein bar, Protein Drink or any drink could keep you satisfied & pre-occupied. Just think about this great journey you've been on, and how well you've done for yourself. Remember, always plan ahead. Great job on the weight loss! -
My hair changed color after surgery. I used to have very auburn hair, but as I got older it slowly turned more brown and dull. After the surgery it grew back auburn again. An unexpected bonus!

Pre-op vitamins
Bufflehead replied to FluffyMcMarsh's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I took a multi-vitamin and biotin (as well as iron which I've been on basically since puberty). As my surgeon warned me, the biotin did not help at all with hair loss. It did help me grow a lovely crop of facial hair as well as additional hair basically everywhere from the navel down. Think hard before you spend a lot of money on biotin -- there is no scientific evidence that it prevents hair loss, and while it does help hair grow in thick and fast, you can't direct it to the places on your body where you want hair! -

90+ days post-op...and worrying again...
WildIris posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
So, I'm down to a size 10 in jeans, and my hubby commented last night that I look even better now (at age 35) than I did at 19, when we met. He doesn't give gratuitous compliments, so I can rest assured that he certainly thinks so! But I've been worrying (when do I not?) as I get further post-op, and my weight-loss slows, and my appetite increases. I also have to face the sad reality that I'm not going to be able to get back into running--I've got too much spinal arthritis. What really freaks me out is trying to figure out to maintain a stable weight long-term given the realities of my past physical injuries catching up with me and making it difficult to get regular exercise without paying for it later in terms of having to take muscle relaxants and prescription pain medication (it's really that bad ). I guess it's back to the old 'celery-carrots-and-string-cheese' snacking, instead of nuts (no matter how raw they are). And various other tricks I learned as a diabetic...that's the one that really freaks me out, is the idea of having to go back on insulin. -
is that what i have, a bob??.....hub said i remind him of mary tyler more with the hair LOL

I lost a lot of hair starting 3 months post op and it was VERY upsetting even tho I knew it was going to happen. I had a hysterectomy in 2015 and also had hair loss after that surgery so I knew what to expect. My hair stopped falling around month 5 and I noticed a LOT of baby hairs sticking up everywhere. Now I shed the normal I usually would. I only took my regular bariatric vitamins prescribed. I don't really think all of the Biotin really makes a difference with stopping hair loss.

The calorie/protein count seems a bit high. You really should contact your nutritionist or surgeon. Everyone's needs are different, based on their weight and activity level. It is very normal for your weight loss to plateau, and I don't believe your body is in starvation mode if you are eating the proper amount of Protein. Be patient, and stick to yout nut's guidlines. Good luck!
-
My nut said I should be eating 1000 calories a day and at least 60 grams of protein. Well I have been doing that from the beginning, and have been loosing up until 2 weeks ago. I have not lost anything! I haven't changed anything along with working out 4-5 times a week. Out of frustration, I looked online to see how many calories I should be eating a day to reach my goal weight. It stated I should be eating 1700 calories and 97 grams of protein with the amount of exercising I am doing. Also, that weight loss will happen in the beginning but then my body will eventually go into starvation mode and I will not loose anymore. Which I am wondering what is happening now? Is it possible that I am in starvation mode and unable to loose weight? I know the band is a tool and I use it as if it is. But honestly, without snacking in between meals, how can I get 1700 calories in a day and eat healthy?
-
Hmmm... I think then maybe your problem is that you're allowing yourself to eat with too much time. Maybe you should set a timer or clock watch while you're eating. Say, if whatever you haven't finished in 30 minutes gets tossed. I do understand that is a really hard habit to break. We get to thinking about wasting food or the millions of kids starving in China. But, you have to overcome that. I know I sure can eat a lot more if I didn't stop at my pre-measured tiny portions. I do follow the 30 minute rule too. I learned this while being banded so I really don't even think about it anymore, but should be a standard for anyone with WLS. Also, set mini goals for yourself. Sometimes its easier to see the forest for the trees, know what I mean? I do about 20-25 Lbs goals and watching my little shark swim quickly accross the Water really helps to keep me motivated. Also once I get into Onederland I'll shorten up those goals into 10-15 Lbs. All the best to you, and I *know* you can pull it together and start up the weight loss again.
