  1. Hello all, my name is Rae. I was banded on December 2, 2008. I am almost 2 weeks out. I feel great. I have always been a big girl. I never ever remember a skinny Rae. I had thought about the band for a long time and researched alot before I did it. I am a nurse, so Ive seen some people do really well and some that do not so well. I was determined that I would do well. And I have done well so far. Although I know the journey has just begun. My starting weight was 280 and Im at 270 now. I see the surgeon on wednesday. I am excited to see what the next few weeks will be like for me. I have learned that this is truelly a tool for me. No quick fixes here. Hope all is well and a Merry Christmas to all.:rolleyes2:

    Monthly 2 days before surgery

Oh no that's terrible can you call the office and explain to them that you usually gain 5ish lbs around TOM? It would be terrible for them to deny you based on that. Last visit I had with the PA at my surgeons office I had TOM and told her I was up 5 lbs. she just gave me the stank eye, like I was lying about it. Most of the staff is understanding at my surgeons office but she wasn't. At my next appt I was down 13 lbs and she said wow, that's a lot of weight in 2 weeks - and I said to her, it helped that I lost an additional 5 lbs of bloating from my cycle! She just laughed.

    Consult Appointment on 12/1....

Because it's an initial consultation, there isn't much that actually "happens". In fact, my initial consult didn't even involve my surgeons. I spent most of the time with the office staff, then with the nutritionist. My visit involved going over fees, insurance procedures, medical clearances, a discussion of why I was interested in bariatric surgery, and finally an overview of the lifelong dietary changes that I'd be signing up for. At an initial consult, I'd try not to worry too much about being "rejected" if you've done your homework first about a couple of things. Meaning... 1. Insurance coverage. Insurance policies vary widely, but from what I've learned, it seems as though most of them have a minimum BMI to cover a bariatric procedure- usually 40 with no comorbidities, or 35 with the presence of one or more comorbid conditions like Type II Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, etc. As well, it seems many insurance policies (in addition to a doctor-supervised weight loss program prior to considering WLS) require a sort of "laundry list" of other weight loss interventions (Weight Watchers, Herbalife, etc...), complete with approximate dates, and amount of weight lost. 2. Expectations for the procedure. Though you may go through a formal psychological exam as part of your preoperative clearances, both the surgical office manager and the nutritionist had a dialogue with me about what brought me to the office in the first place. How you'll fare with WLS surgery depends on a lot of factors, one of which is how realistic your expectations are for results. **How far from consult to surgery? Honestly, that's a question with no definitive answer. For me it was almost exactly 3 months. But.....it depends on (among other things) your clearance tests, how quickly your insurance company approves your procedure (if you're going that route) and what the availability is for your surgeon/hospital to schedule your procedure. One of the best things about my consult visit was my "Bible Binder". My surgeon's office had a fantastic binder assembled that outlined the whole WLS surgery process. Every. Single. Step. That consult appointment is an information overload, and to have everything written out for me was wonderful. I remember how excited I was at that initial appointment- it was all starting to become "real" finally! I wish you the best of luck- keep us posted on your progress
  4. Hi all! I have been reading posts for a couple of weeks now-i couldn't figure out how to post anything. I am in the process of doing the 6 month nutritionist thing and tonight I have to go to a weight loss seminar. These are all requirements of bcbs. Is anyone out there at the same point as me in this journey? Can anyone tell me if these 6 months fly by? Take Care!

    Pre Preop Diet!?

Yes thats right , I said it! I'm outraged at myself for gaining so much weight . I went from 272 last may to 232 last october. NOW, today....I'm 272 again. Back to my highest. I have been eating like a horse since i found out my surgery was scheduled and everything is a GO. Now, I'd like to lose 10 lbs before I start pre op. Does this sound stupid or logical? be honest , i love all of your honesty!!!!

    Advice ?!?!

This may not be the best advice but try not to worry so much about your pre-op diet and focus your energy on post-op. I lost 18.5 pounds in the 6 days before surgery when I started the Protein drinks and Clear liquids on the day before, so in my opinion, you have a little "wiggle room". I'm sure the doctor would not agree but the way I look at it is this: I've made this decision and I'll follow your instructions to the best of my abiltiy, but I'm human and have an overeating problem. It took me much longer than 2 months to learn the bad behaviors so you can't expect me to completely change in 2 months. Plus I had to quit smoking on top of it. (I still yearn for a cigarette, diet coke and regular coffee and hope the cravings go away eventually!!) It's good that you are being mindful and making healthy choices, but my personal addmission is that I lived it up in the months before surgery. I ate what I wanted, whenever I wanted. It was my "good bye" to unhealthy food and eating habits. I was stressed about the surgery (and my upcoming move and wedding) and being a stress eater, I pigged out on several occassions. But I also started to incorporate the healthy options and found a good balance near the end. You'll find that balance, too. And for now, don't weigh yourself every day. Maybe a couple times a week. Save the daily weigh-ins for when you start the liquid diet just before surgery and you'll be amazed at the results. Oh, and one more thing...I gained 13 pounds the day of surgery. They pump you full of fluids so that you don't dehydrate post-op. I weighed 8.7 pounds more when I left the hospital than I did when I checked in. Just keep that in mind for afterwards and know that it will come off plus more in a week or 2. Good luck and try not to stress so much!

    Advice ?!?!

That's exactly how I feel. If we were all healthy and positive then we wouldn't be here today. I'm just scared and I keep getting worried about several things from gaining weight to am I doing things right ? Wrong ? All the above ? I'm terrified because I want this to work. I know I have to work with it and I'm giving it my all I just get worried/scared .
  8. It's VERY important to follow your surgeon's plan. If you don't think you can even before starting this process, maybe you are not ready for this right now, and need to do some reading about what happens to people who have complications. The preop diet is meant to shrink your liver so the surgeon can work safely in that area...if it is in the way there is a higher chance it will be "nicked" and you can hemorrhage. At best this can be managed with blood transfusions (do you really want that?). At worst, hemorrhage can cause death. How badly do you want to lost weight? What sacrifices are you willing to make for a BRIEF period of time, in order to reach your goal?
  9. So today I picked up my support letter from my pcp! It's clear and straight to the point; She supports me, thinks that I am an excellent candidate and deemed it as a medical necessity! I had my psych evaluation last Friday she loved my positive vibes and wanted me to be a leader of a support group. LOL. Next week I meet with my nut for a final time! Then I'll meet with my sugeron to get a date. I am ready. I know I will have a love hate relationship with mu sleeve due to this whole lifestyle change. But I am ready to drop this weight. Get healthy! I have been researching WLS since 09 and the lord has finally blessed me with the chance to get it done. He (Lord) may not come when you want him but he is always on time. Amen! I pray that everyone aiming for a date this month next month or even this year gets approved and have a successful journey with their sleeve. Until next time. Xo

    Frustrated. PreOp diet

I'm sorry you were feeling sick. I actually think this is a common symptom of detox and fat being released around your liver and I'm glad wifey gave you a pass. And her request may not have registered to her as insensitive. But this did get me thinking about my role as personal chef in my home and what will be required without causing to much discombobulation in my home. Maybe I can switch duties or pick up some extra slack in other areas outside the kitchen because preparing food is when I typically consume the most unconscious calories.....I don't want to appear like narcissistic, that can rear it's ugly head during previous diets and weight loss attempts and my family is over me.

If You Had 7 Weeks To Just Heal And Learn...

Thanks for all the responses. I think mypureed is that long too..That was why I was so glad- getting used to the new way of eating, getting in enough fluids, and not burping, vomiting or whatever stuff some say happens to them. Again, not expecting it but certainly with little kids and the nature of my job (not being able to go to the bathroom for hours etc.) makes it hard in the beginning. Okay, so I guess I'll remain active, make plans now, and try to keep my mind and body busy. At this weight I've been so in pain that I've generally used the summer to hide away from people in air conditioning and "relax" (i.e. loaf around) and eat. So I'm going to need to follow all this advice and really force myself to change in many ways. I do believe I'll enjoy it too because for the first time in a long time I'll have energy and feel better about my body.

    My Before Pic

We are the same height. I was 385 - 400 when I had my lapband, and got down to about 210. After my pregnancy I was around 250, then with a slip up to about 275, then after removal gained to about 350. (sigh) I'm now in the 280s, striving to get to where you are now.

Aww, thank you! This will help me greatly when I go grocery shopping! I'm sure you look beautiful and feel a lot healthier. I'll take the excess skin any day over the excess weight haha
  14. From the album: Just a few of me

Taken a few years ago when I went back to roller derby and had gained quite a few pounds. I'm afraid I've gained quite a few since then also.
  15. Whenever your surgeon gives you clearance. Depends on exactly what you want to do, light cardio is going to usually be cleared a lot sooner than, say, weightlifting. Most surgeons will want you to wait 6 weeks or so before weight lifting or doing serious core work, or even cardio that involves a lot abs. But only your surgeon can tell you for sure.
  16. My gall bladder came out during laparoscopic surgery at the same time that my lap band went in four years ago. They took it out as a precaution because apparently you can get more gallstones once you switch to a low fat diet. The bile that is made by the gall bladder is for digestion fat, and if there is less fat to digest, it can build up and turn to sludge and form stones. That is the explanation that they gave me anyway. I noticed no change, and because I could not eat lowfat healthy foods with the band, I opted for higher calorie/higher fat foods just so I could have some food that would stay down and help my hunger. I used to slather mayo on everything as dry anything would come right back up within seconds. I think you are better off without your gallbladder with your weight loss surgery. I experienced some discomfort after they took it out, but the whole recovery for the gall bladder/lap band surgery wasn't more than about a week of taking it easy. If you have a choice, I would highly recommend having it done all at once so you have one surgery instead of two, one anesthesia, one hospital stay, etc.

    Hello

Yes you will Michelle. You are gonna be eating like gourmet food which is flavorful but in less quantity. You will lose weight depending on how tight is the band. I am in a point where I do not loose or gain, but I reached my goal. When you reach your goal try to fill the band where u dont gain or loose. You will get used to the band after a while. Its great.
  18. Hi all... I had a little setback today and I am trying to work through it. I went to get my clearance from my PCP today and he won't clear me until my A1C comes down. While my rational mind understands that a high A1C puts me at greater risk for infection and possibly a longer healing time, I'm sad and disappointed. I am having a hard time understanding how my A1C jumped 3 points from March to June. I have been losing fat and gaining muscle during this time. My PCP is working with me to get it back down. The surgeon's office is encouraging me and reassuring me that this is a minor setback. My family is doing the same. I am just a little discouraged about the outcome today. I know I can't give up, I'm just disappointed today. I though today would be the day we submit to insurance. Please tell me that someone else has had these little setbacks and things ended up okay in the end. I really need to hear that right now. Thanks...
  19. I had gastric bypass may 10, 2010 and lost 154 lbs-best decision I ever made for myself...but I've gained 30 of it back. I know a little weight gain is normal, but I've gone back to old bad habits!! Any post ops go through this?? And if so, HELP!
  20. Misty, were/are you following your bypass guidelines? I sitil don't drink for a half hour before or after my meals etc. I did stop journaling my food but stated again after gaining some stress eating pounds ands it's working. I already lost a couple of the 10 I had put back on.I continually tell myself I don't want to waste all I gained and all the money I spent. You can do it! Get a nutritionist to help you if you need to keep you on track. Tell yourself that you will not let this food take over your life! You CAN do it!
  21. So my mom told my sister that having the sleeve will be such a drastic change that I won't be able to handle it and she doesn't understand why diet isn't working for me. I'm just frustrated. I thought my mom was supportive but I guess she's not. She lost 100 lbs a few years ago, BUT she gave up food and transferred her addiction to alcohol. She still eats lots of sugary foods and counts fat content, which doesn't work for me...I'm happy she lost weight, but sad that she doesn't support me and that she continues to drink.

    I'm so disgusted with myself

There's still time to change! We all have slipped up in one way or another at some point on our journey. Just try and remember how much time & effort you have put into this thus far. You had to have made changes or they wouldn't have allowed the surgery. Of course it dosen't help that the Holidays are here and our famalies are all busy gaining the "Holiday 10" all around us! I reccomend you call your nutritionist on Monday & form a plan for the upcoming weeks. That's what they are there for, they realize there is a gradual need for food and will make sure you are physically post op safe. :cursing:

    I'm so disgusted with myself

You can do this! Remember the reasons why you wanted the surgery. Dont beat yourself up anymore, just go forward. But I would definitely let your Dr. know what youve been eating. Im not sure if it will make any difference to what he tells you, but it might. And this site, come to it often, and read the uplifting things that other bandsters write. Read some of the questions and look at the experiences and judge for yourselfwith your Drs advice what is right for you. Remember, the band is NOT a cure-all, its a tool. Its there to help us lose weight, not to lose the weight for us. I am 4 days post-op now and feel that i am one of the luckier ones. Ive had little pain, only took 3 pain pills in total, and i have been walking daily since the day after i came home. That has helped magnificently for me! Whenever i have felt some gas pains ive gotten outside and walked. Today its kinda rainy, so my daughter and i went to Kohls and walked around rather than walking outside. It was great! Both to be walking, and, to be somewhere with people around. And, as of this morning i have lost 7 lbs since my surgery 4 days ago. Amazing! For food, you may want to try cream soup, maybe with some extra broth added if that helps. Im actually getting the Proteins and the liquids in, which is also helping. I think that the walking, the liquids, and the Protein, have all helped me. I hope it will help you, too. Good luck! Im glad that you have found this website. Its truly been a Godsend for me! Rhonda

    I'm so disgusted with myself

To be honest, I can do the diet. I put my mind to it before surgery, and did it, and I know I can do it again. My problem is support. I have 2 people that I rely on for support, but both of them have re-gained weight, and are WAY over-due for a fill--or even just a plain check-up. I'm so thankful that I found this forum. I am getting the suppport I need! Do you think that my band will fail from what I did? I know it was only from Monday to Saturday, but in these early stages?? I'm so freaking out right now. Realization has hit, and it's hitting me hard right now.

    Question for the Ladies

Don't panic, this happens to me everytime I lose more than 12lbs a month. As long as there is no pain, smell, itchy discharge then it's down to weight-loss and hormones but it's annoying. If in major doubt and you have a chance of pregnancy then check immediately or speak to doctor in case.
