    December 2020

Before I was able to be discharged, my surgeon made me drink 1 oz over 30 minutes, walk and urinate, and drink 1 ox over 10 minutes for an hour at a time (60oz at 1 oz every 10 minutes). It was not pleasant, but 10 days post I am progressing very well.

Day 1 pre op liquid diet

As everyone said, the pre-op diet is the hardest part of the process. I slipped up during mine and ate a sugar-free pudding, which wasn't on-plan. Later in the 10 days, I added a little heavy cream to my shakes (which was allowed) and the extra fat helped me a lot. If you're not lactose-intolerant you can try that.
  4. I had my bypass Nov. 5th and am just transitioning to soft foods. Yesterday for lunch I had a small amount of Thai shrimp and rice noodles, and it went down fine. Then I had an applesauce snack, no problem. For dinner I decided I would try some ground beef with a few noodles. I didn’t eat a large amount and I chewed well, but I’ve been sick ever since and throwing up every hour to hour and a half. I’m not throwing up food, just saliva. And if I try to drink anything, it comes up after 5-10 minutes. I don’t really feel nauseated, it’s just an awful feeling of fullness which gets worse and worse until I throw up. It’s now 6:45 a.m. and I’m exhausted! My doctor’s office opens at 8:00, so I’ll be calling the minute they open. I hate the thought of having to go to the hospital, but I’m afraid I may have a blockage, and I’m probably getting dehydrated at this point. Has anyone else experienced this? Up until now I really haven’t had much of a problem, other than experiencing the foamies a couple of times, which were short lived. Ugh!

WHEN did you start REALLY WORKING OUT?

So walking I know it sounds so boring - is the best workout ever. But I think I was at least 8 weeks, I know I tried riding bike but it was too soon. I didn't ride my bike until like 10 weeks and felt confident I wouldn't hurt myself. Hiking like with incline and such wasn't for 12 weeks either. Yoga w/strength training happened closer to 16 weeks. I didn't want to injure myself as that was when Covid was not good here (which in hindsight sounds stupid because it's worse now) and I had no desire to go to doctors. I would just try what you want and stop if it actually feels like it hurts. Don't strain yourself or push yourself too hard, but yeah go get it GURL!

meal ideas and suggestions! Drop 'em here please!

I am 10 months out and find I need to have quick, easy high protein meals about. I like to cook, so I will do more involved stuff on the week-ends, but here are a few go-to items for me: 1. Frozen Turkey Meatballs (with a red sauce, with canned beef gravy, with mozzarella on a bed of lettuce) 2. Bag of frozen shrimp (shrimp salad for lunch with a bag of kibo high protein chips, on a salad, with cocktail sauce as a snack, with turkey sausage, cauliflower rice and cajun spice for "jambalaya"). 3. Make ahead ground turkey with LOTs of taco seasoning...night I make it we have tacos for dinner (I have the kibo chips, family has taco shells) then for a couple of lunches I have shredded lettuce, corn and taco meat 4. Turkey sausage chili with red beans and TONS of veggies and extra chili seasoning; great for these winter evenings, and I have it for lunches all week; I use Sargento 4 cheese Mexican shredded cheese with this 5. Beef barley soup; I make it on the week-end and have it all week. Delicious and filling. 6. I keep kirkland Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough protein bars on hand for when I'm craving sweet 7. Siggi Yogurt -- I love the kind with Almond Butter as an add-in; they can be hard to find so I'll have Vanilla Siggi and add 1 to 2 tablespoons of Almond or Sunflower butter. Delicious and high in protein.
  7. To add to @Jaelzion excellent list: 9. You’ll lose some hair. The surgery & reduced caloric intake accelerates your natural hair loss cycle. It generally starts around month 3 or 4. You can’t stop it cause it’s a normal process. It does stop & your hair is regrowing as you’re shedding. How long it lasts is an individual thing. 10. Constipation is common. Add benefibre or similar to your diet & have some gentle stool softeners on hand. You’ll become regular again once you get close to or are in maintenance. 11. After surgery you may experience some nasty & very sudden attacks of diarrhoea. Pack some incontinence knickers so you’re not caught unaware & forced to toss your own knickers. 12. You will have lose skin. How much depends on how much weight you have to lose, your age, gender, weight gain/loss history, how long you’ve been overweight. 13. A lot of hormones, etc. are stored in your fat & as you lose your weight they’ll be released into your blood stream. You may experience changes to your menstruated cycle like heavier periods, increased cholesterol levels, incidences of low blood pressure, etc. Things will settle once you reach goal. 14. You will experience tiredness & loss of energy at times. Rest, nap as you need it. 15. Take each step slowly. Your tummy can become very contrary & throw tantrums like a 2yr old child. You may not enjoy foods you did before surgery. Food you ate successfully for weeks may suddenly upset you. Don’t give up on those things. Take a break & try them again later. 16. Yes, there will be foods you won’t eat again but they are the ones you won’t be able to tolerate after surgery &/or got you to the weight you are now. There will be foods you will only eat in moderation & foods that you discover healthier alternatives for or healthier ways of cooking them. 17. Listen to your body. It will tell you what you can or can’t tolerate. You may experience tightness or heaviness, vomiting or diarrhoea, even dumping. 18. You digestive system may gurgle, groan & whine like the ghost of the part of your tummy that was removed is haunting you. 19. Eat slowly. Put your cutlery down between bites, sit back & wait. Then ask yourself do you really need the next bite or do you just want it. 20. Don’t eat until you are full. Eat until you’ve had enough. There is a difference. 21. Sometimes, you may think you are having hunger pangs but it’s actually too much acid in your tummy. You likely will be prescribed esomeprazole to take at the beginning. If you weren’t, ask for some. My surgeon told me I’ll always be taking one every day. Of course you may not experience all of these things but it’s better to be aware of them in case you do. Good luck on your journey.
  8. I had a bmi of 35 before my surgery & am 5’3” so similar to you. I wouldn’t consider it a low bmi though it is generally considered the minimum for surgery unless you have pre existing conditions like high blood pressure, which you have & diabetic, which you almost are. In two days I’ll be 19 months post surgery. I have no regrets at all. Best decision. I slowly put on weight from puberty. Then yo yoed between 60 & 75kgs thru my 20s, 30s & 40s. Then I became peri menopausal & put on 12 kgs in about 6 months. When I became menopausal I put on another 15kgs I swear overnight. And I couldn’t lose any of it. I woke up one day & decided enough. Made an appointment with my GP & 6 weeks later I was in surgery. I haven’t been the weight I am now since I was 12 & starting puberty. I’ve gone a full circle. Generally the whole process has been pretty smooth. My tendency to low blood pressure has become my every day life & I have the odd hyperglycaemic attack. But apart from that all good. It is your decision but if you follow the plan, make permanent changes to how you eat & what you eat, it will work for you too. It’s not a quick fix nor the easy way out. There’s a lot of self reflection, learning & work involved. The benefits to your health, general feeling of well being, greater energy, confidence, etc. cannot be undervalued. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

    Why do I feel guilty?

You're doing fine. I lost 15 pounds my first MONTH after surgery. Then 10 the next month and 10 per month for the next year. Stalling early on is very common, just stick with the program and the weight will start coming off again.

    Pre op process

Hm, is there a main number you can call and speak to someone else? Or can you email? It's possible that she's on extended leave or doesn't have access to her normal work phone during COVID-19.

    Question about gain

You are still early out so I doubt its re gain. Fluctuations of a few lbs are normal during weight loss. Your menstrual cycle, body holding water, ect have a lot to do with those fluctuations . Exercise is only 10% of weight loss is what I have read and I myself did not exercise to lose my weight because of my lower back. Sticking to your plan will get you to the weight you want to be at. Good luck
  12. I'm still new here & still reading some of the stories and still pretty new to the surgery part (I had surgery on August 3rd). I had a really hard time early on with food, and even still some days I find it very hard to eat anything without feeling disgusted. My weight loss has been steady (it has slowed but my dr said that that is normal). That being said I have worked at eating better, and being 4 months post-op now it is much easier on me as far as eating goes. Has anyone experienced a gain of just a few pounds despite not changing anything eating habit-wise? I had a small gain (3 pounds, give or take), and I figured at this stage is abnormal. I have recently begun exercising daily (walking on my treadmill, using weights). I have an autoimmune disorder that causes pain/stiffness in my lower spine/hips/knee that makes it so I cannot do strenuous workouts, so I have to stick to walking. Could the adding of exercise cause such a small gain? I'm sorry if it seems trivial, and I suppose to a lot it might be a petty thing to worry about, but in my mind 2 or 3 pounds can (and has) turned into 5 and 10 pounds if you get the idea. My next appointment isn't until February so of course, I will talk to my doctor about it, but what are some of your experiences at this stage? Thanks for any info/advice!
  13. I was 192 lbs and 5'5" - at my highest weight (besides one week after surgery when I gained 10 lbs from the IV fluids/air they fill you with/swelling??)... I had never been over 200 lbs. I wore a size 10-12 in pants... and X-large in shirts. I lost ALMOST 50 lbs pretty quickly and I can't seem to get below 138 lbs... I lose like 1 lbs per month since September. It is one of the best decisions I've made for myself. I am a size 4 in pants now & a size small/medium in shirts. I still want to lose weight and get down to 130-135 lbs so I can have some room to gain and lose... but I know that some of my weight is saggy skin in my underarm region and some on my lower belly. Which isn't bad, but I think without that skin - I'd likely be 5-10 lbs lighter.
  14. I had a BMI not far from yours when I had the surgery last month and have lost 22lbs in the month since surgery. I also lost 19 lbs on the preop diet. My doctor was amazing, I had little pain and it has been incredible to lose 40lbs in just over 1 month. My wife also had the surgery the same day that I did, but had a much higher BMI. She also has lost 40 lbs since the preop diet and had a little more pain than I did but it has subsided. This surgery has changed my families lives in just the short while that we have had it. I highly recommend to everyone who qualifies to get the surgery. We are advocating to our other family members who are above the 35 BMI threshold to get this surgery to help take back their lives and be able to do everything that they want to do. If you are like me, you started the process of getting approval for surgery because you have been fighting weight for years. There is a reason you chose this path and this surgery will be life changing for the better.

    Pre op process

    1. Before the six months of counseling visits, I had to attend a seminar 2. There was a list of tests I had to undergo - EKG, Endoscopy, Colonoscopy, check X-ray, blood work, mammogram and a bunch of other stuff. We did that concurrently with the sixth months of weight loss counseling. 4. After the six months were up, I had an all day appointment where I met with the surgeon, a psychologist, a nutritionist, a nurse practitioner, insurance specialists and some other folks I can't remember. 5. My surgeon's office requested pre-auth from my insurance and got it. 6. There was one last pre-surgery visit with the surgeon. Consents are the forms they have you sign saying that they've gone over all the risks and benefits with you and you agree to have the surgery. I signed these at this pre-op appointment. 7. We scheduled my surgery and it took place on 3/26/2019. The rest is history! 😀

    Charcuterie board

My only problem with the charcuterie board is....I LOVE IT TOO MUCH! I snacked the whole darn day...go in the kitchen, grab a bite of cheese and a small handful of nuts. 10 minutes later, some meat and cheese and a "healthy" cracker. Next time by, a couple of grapes and some cheese (mostly brie). It was delightful! I never felt too full...but I ate WAY too much over a period of about two hours. So my advice would be, make yourself a plate and step away from the charcuterie!

    OOTD

Plus the cost of returning it if it doesn’t fit. Grrrr. Been trying in last summer clothes & a lot are too big. Sigh. Will I ever stabilise. So new pants (black of course) for work. Thank goodness Witchery does a size 4 (US size 0). Picked up two new blouses too. Both size 4 as well. No wonder my old size 10 tops were floating on me. I’ll be shopping in the children’s section soon though I don’t think I’ll resort to one of those Daddy’s little Princess shirts 😂 Also cleared out some summer shoes. Too big & too wide. Six pairs to find new homes. Lucky I bought those couple of new pairs. 😂

    Any December surgery

Nothing guaranteed until we hear from my insurance, which was submitted yesterday. I might not know for up to 7-10 business days. So with that in mind, I’m starting my liquid diet on the 14th (Monday) in case I’m having surgery as soon as the 28th (it might be the 30th)!
  19. I feel your frustrations! I started out with a low BMI and my current BMI is 22. The weight loss has slooowed way down/stalled even though I would like to loose 10 more pounds. We have to learn to celebrate the little losses.

    My Fitness Pal settings

I once found the USDA guidelines and I stick to them. You must keep one system carbohydrates: 45 to 65 percent, protein: 10 to 35 percent, fat: 20 to 35 percent

My surgery is tomorrow 12/10. I’m suuuuper anxious about anesthesia. This is my first surgery ever and I had a weird experience with the twilight anesthesia for my upper endoscopy so I’m hoping it goes better. I wish this was over already 😥

    Weight loss amount

Hi. I'm 19 days and lost only 15 lbs. I think it really depends on your starting weight. I just hope to see more going down in next weeks, months and years. Sent from my SM-N960F using BariatricPal mobile app

    4 onz of food?

I agree with Starwarsandcupcakes. I still can't eat chicken or meat at all - too dense for me, but can easily eat 4oz of high protein yoghurt. I was told to prioritise fluid intake first (at least 2 litres per day though my dietitian said I'd be working up to this for the first few weeks and that I should contact her if I couldn't take in at least 750ml per day). And secondly to prioritise at least 60g of protein per day. The diet plan I was given didn't have measurements of food, it was for calories per day. I'm 6 weeks out from RNY bypass and supposed to now be having at least 800 & no more than 1000 cals pd. As with your diet plan I was told to work towards having 3 small meals and 2 snacks but I still have to have a protein shake to get my protein in. I wouldn't be able to do it with food alone. As an evening meal I've just had half of a small baked potato [30g/1oz] (only the inside, not the skin), with 60g/2oz of canned tuna and teaspoon of low fat mayonnaise. That seems to be similar to your meal plan? As a snack I'd have for example the protein shake (146 cal/22g protein) or maybe 50g high protein yoghurt with about 10-20g fruit puree. Reading the various threads here I'd say everybody seems to have a different tolerance for what and how much they can eat? So I'd say aim for the regular pattern of eating, but eat what you feel you can tolerate.

    July 2020 Surgery anyone?

Hi July Peeps! November was a rough month for me with a flood in my house from a broken water heater, and then hubby and I both had COVID. We thankfully are recovered. We still have repair work that will need to be done on the house, but our house is livable and we are glad to be home and not in a hotel for months on end. My weight loss was incredible (I think 😊) for the first 4 months with an average of 15 pounds per month. Now my weight loss has slowed and I am actually stalled right now. I think I have lost maybe a pound in the last week and 10 pounds total in month 5. It is a bummer, but it had to happen sometime. I am just going to keep doing what I have been and hope this stall ends soon. I am wearing size 10 jeans and medium tops at this point. I have so much energy and I am so happy with my weight loss thus far. Hope everyone else is doing well! 💕😊
  25. So who else has been delayed because of the increase in Covid case?? Really wish people would just stay home or wear a mask. I know this sounds selfish but I am really bummed. My surgery was scheduled for Nov 23. But here I sit still waiting and it could be another 4 weeks because of people going visiting for Christmas. I know that the hospital is the last place a healthy person should be but I have worked so hard to meet the qualifications and 3 days before surgery I was cancelled. This sucks.
