    A New Love!

I am in love with grits, but never was before WLS! I have discovered that adding unflavored protein powder to instant packets of grits is a great breakfast (and don't laugh, dinner also!) idea. I am experimenting by adding different types of cheeses, and adding different spices, as well. One single-serve packet lasts me for at least three meals! The brand I amusing is Quaker Original Instants Grits. I am, indeed, so EASILY amused.....

    Eating post op

I had pain for the first 3 weeks. It gets a little better each day. stick to the fluids and don't attempt the solids any earlier than your doctor allows. You don't want to mess up your new stomach. In time it gets much easier to eat. Use this time to follow the diet and you will lose weight the quickest during this time. Good luck on your progress.

    Dizzies

I am 4 weeks post op today and I have had dizzy spells since about week 2. They happen when I get up from a seated position or out of bed. My blood pressure was too low and blood pressure meds had to be decreased and now eliminated.
  6. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, everyone. So yesterday, I had a breakdown. Crying and all. I have not had qualms or fears until the last few days. I knew that would happen. My son (22) is having this with me and he admitted to a little fear about the anesthesia and he is one who claims no fear to anything, ever. So, the closer you get to it, the more your fears start emerging. I'm afraid I will be a basket case as they are prepping me for surgery and hopefully they will give me something for the crazies. I had a hysterectomy in 2007 using just a spinal (which I requested) and happy juice. No fears, no intubation and I don't remember the surgery at all, just one or two flashes, because I just slept. I wish they would do that for this. It's funny how you missing eating. Not the food itself, really, just the eating it part. For me anyway. We were Skyping with our family in Connecticut last night so we could be together for Christmas eve (we have no one here in our new state of Nevada and we are really not even celebrating this year what with the surgery and the expense of it and all, it is kind of lonely ), but I kept asking everyone to eat things in front of the camera so that I could watch their enjoyment. Living vicariously through Skype! Sad. I was also thinking about my sleeping arrangements for the next week or so after Thursday. My bed is very high and my sofas are very low. Here is me; climbing up to get into bed or pulling myself up off the sofa, which will be easier? Oh, the dilemma. It has been tough. We've been living paycheck to paycheck since I don't have a job here in the state with the worst unemployment. I'm hoping to start CNA training after I lose some of my excess weight and hopefully get back some energy. I would like to be able to help people and give back to my community and if I can get paid doing it, that will be great. I am not sure what the job market is for CNAs here, but when I look for listings for the jobs, it says they're available. I am normally a secretary, but those jobs, while out there, have so many applicants for each, it is a very tough market. Well, I have probably rambled enough. Good luck to all of us preoppers and once again, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all.
  7. Hello Sleevers I had my surgery on the 15th of December and have been on a liquid diet for the past 2 weeks. Tomorrow is the first day of my purée stage and I'm super nervous about what to eat and how my new stomach will take it, any recommendations for my first meal?

    Taste buds

I still like mostly the same things myself. Except, I always had a sweet tooth. I'd love a bite of chocolate, ice cream and put me in front of a brownie......YUM..but I was sleeved three months ago. I decided to have a mini snickers, ate half and thought *shrugs* it wasn't nearly as yummy as I wanted it to be! So, I haven't had a sweet since. Now.........give me a cracker...............
  9. At 5 lbs in 6 - 7 weeks you're barely under the statistical 1 - 2 lbs/week average, but you're spot on for an overall average. You're doing great, and just think - those 20 lbs are 20 that you'll never see again. :ban: This is an aspect that interests me. From looking at various people's stats, the informal average seems to be about 10#/month. Thank goodness for the first 6 months, eh?
  10. Ok Ladies....... I am 6 weeks post op tomorrow and just started my first period since surgery and the scale shows I gained 3 pounds. While my brain tells me the gain is likely due to my period, I can't help but feel maybe it isn't. Anyone else experience this?
  11. I kinda did what you're suggesting and pretty much didn't follow any real diet during my 6 months wait. But to be quite honest, as I see the weight come off now, my determination gets stronger and I find myself actually liking the foods I am limited to. Probably because anything tastes great at this point. But with the lack of hunger and getting full on such small amounts of whatever I eat, I just don't miss all the past fatty food stuff. And some things undergo an unexpected change too. I loved sugarfree popcicles before surgery and in the weeks that followed, but they have become too sweet for me, so I lost my desire for them. It happens. Probably will for other things too later on. Doesn't bother me and I doubt you'll care either. Plenty of good healthy choices out there. So, back to your topic of pre-op diet..........I doubt it makes any difference. Enjoy.
  12. I am sorry that you lost your brother at such a young age, that is terrible. I never had a band, but I am one of the lucky people who not only gets the slimies that band people have but also the dumping that bypass people have. Just the other night I had maybe 3-4 bites of very well chewed steak and I was frothing, sliming, and oozing goo for almost an hour afterward. A few weeks ago I got a little crazy and had 2-3 bites of dessert at dinner and in a few minutes my heart was racing and I was sweating and barfing. It was really very sexy, lol. The sleeve is a constant reminder that I can't eat too much and if I do it's instantly punishing. I am happy that I have my sleeve, but if I had been able to stop eating so much without it, I would have skipped the sleeve and I would now be able to eat like a normal person! I have three friends who know that I had the procedure, but everyone else is a little weirded out by the fact that if we're out to dinner I really cannot eat much at all and the few times I've had one or two bites to many, I get super sick. The sleeve is nice but it very much comes with its own set of trade-offs.

    The last 20 pounds

I am right there with you, almost word for word. Getting so frustrated with it. But that wasn't helpful so I went back to journaling and logging my intake and activity and I found that I was cheating a lot more than I thought. I have 2 weeks to go until my 1 year banding anniversary so I am trying to stay really committed and see how well I can do. Really want to end my year on a positive note. If I can get through the first year and lose 110 pounds, does it matter if I give myself 6 months to get off the last 20 pounds? Good luck, strength, and willpower to all of us:thumbup:

    Introduce Yourself!

Welcome, sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. My advice would have been just tough it out and think of the long term goal of getting healthy. I had a constant headache the first week of my preop liquid diet, but that eventually went away. You have made the right decision and you have started on a great journey. I was so nervous for my surgery, wondering if I had made the right decision, but it truly was. I wish this had been available years ago. I will be thinking of you on Tuesday, good luck!! (I used to live in SLC, what part are you in?)
  16. I have read alot of folks report that they came out heavier after surgery due to fluid retention or whatnot...it seems to go away after a few days (or weeks, depends on the person). I honestly couldn't tell if I was swollen or bloated, my tum was already too big to notice, lol. Sounds like you are doing great...congratulations!
  17. I am 1 week post op and have been having so much trouble with gas and burping. Is anyone else having these problems? Is this normal? How long will this last, cause I'm miserable from this.
  18. Hi guys, I was sleeved on Dec 14. On puréed foods now which I've been tolerating. Started New whey about a week ago and 5 days in, started getting very sharp gas pains making it hard to move. Dr's office said to back off the New Whey, which I have, but now the other Protein drinks are giving me the same problem (and I've been tolerating them since day 2) So I'm not getting much protein in at all. Is this something that subsides? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  19. I've been super busy the past 3 weeks and have slipped into some "grab & go" habits that aren't serving me very well. No loss for 2 weeks and today got on the scale and was up almost 2 pounds. I'm close to goal but it's been very elusive because I've gotten lazy about my choices. Anyone have some good standby meals that are quick and easy when you're on the go? One of my problems has been not making time for meals so I've noticed I grab a little of this and a little of that......which really translates to grazing all afternoon. Old habits die hard............ What are some favorites for healthy, high protein, low carb, bariatric friendly choices? Think it's time to clean out my kitchen and start over. Easy to get a little cocky since I've gotten closer to my goal weight.......which is exactly what I don't want to do!! Thanks for any input!!

    Quick & Easy Suggestions?

I'm only about 6 weeks out, but I keep the fridge stocked with cheese strings, meat, greek yogurt, apple sauce for snacks. If I need a quick meal that I haven't prepared for I have several cans of soup in the pantry (kinda high in sodium, but better than some options). I also set aside leftovers from the night before for lunches.

    Polycystic Ovaries

I am not sure about it either but I had my period 2 days after surgery and I haven't had one in almost a YEAR! I never thought I would be excited about shark week. My surgeon said that the weight loss will definitely help with PCOS.

    Got a new job...

Unless they are a small company, they have to give you as much unpaid leave as you need (up to 12 weeks) under FMLA. Whether they give paid leave or not should be governed by their standard benefits package. You should talk to your surgeon about how much time he/she thinks you will need given your job requirements. For heavy lifting and fast paced work I would guess your surgeon will recommend at least four weeks off.
  24. Cat, you’re right - I felt satisfied and helped with the sweet craving also. I definitely didn’t feel guilty about it. Anastasia, this is what I keep telling myself too - if I could do it for a week pre-op, I can absolutely follow this plan, which allows for even more than what I was allowed that week before. And you did TWO weeks pre-op?? I don’t know how, but be proud!
  25. Can you stall at 3 weeks what should I do did not expect this I feel like a failure . I lost 29 since preop and 12 since surgery now nothing in a week and a half what to do help!
