    Stalls suck

Whenever we lose a lot of weight in a short period of time (15 pounds in 16 days), a substantial amount of the pounds lost is actually water weight. To lose a pound a fat a day, you would need to burn an additional 3500 calories above what you are consuming, which generally is only achieved consistently by peak athletes. If you are sticking to your program's plan, you are still losing fat pounds during a stall as your body regains the excess depleted fluid. Once your body reaches healthy fluid levels, your scales will start reflecting losses again. Please don't get discouraged. For most of us, weight loss is not a steady decline but achieved with periods of losses and stalls as our bodies adjust to the changes.

    Stalls suck

Stalls do suck... I am almost a year out and am on a cycle of stall for a month, lose a few pounds, then stall another month and so on... But I am not gaining... so there's that.

I feel old at 55 doing this. I went straight for the DS surgery because I want results and don’t want to go back for more weight loss surgeries (skin removal is a possibility). I definitely don’t want to do that again. I had complications after my surgery on the 14th. I was in the hospital an extra 3 days. I didn’t want to post and scare anyone but I’m a week out from surgery now and doing much better. I just need to figure out my eating/drinking schedule since they can’t be done within 30 minutes of each other. I am super excited for the results. From max weight before the pre-surgery diet to now, I’m down 25 pounds!!!

Stalls are very common & you can have several of them while you are losing. When they occur & how long they last can be quite different though yes the first tends to occur around week three & the usually last 1-3 weeks. It’s the time your buddy uses to reset your digestive hormones & enzymes, metabolic rate, etc in response to your weight loss & new needs. Your stomach is a muscle that stretches & contracts but it will take years of overeating to stretch it out to where it doesn’t contract as effectively & is larger. As for portion sizes, it’s best to check with your dietician for their recommendations for your needs. Some people are given caloric goals as well as goals for all macros. I was only given protein & fluid goals & told 1/4 to 1/3 of a cup from purée slowly increasing to a cup by about 6 months (my goal weight). The majority of that portion should be protein. I was only eating a bare 900 calories at 6 months but many are advised to eat more than that from months 2 or 3. You’ll discover your own portion sizes too i.e. the portion your tummy will tolerate of specific foods at a sitting. Some foods sit more heavily in your tummy or take longer to digest & are more filling so you’ll eat less of them. Some are digested more quickly so unless you are aware of your portion it can be easy to eat more than you need.
  5. I’m sorry you are feeling this way. You are not alone in feeling emotional & having regrets. The surgery & weight loss stirs up your hormones & spin out your emotions. Plus you can’t eat, which is what you likely turned to whenever you were feeling emotional, stressed, etc. in the past. So many of us used food as a comfort & to soothe us. A lot of the hunger you are probably feeling is head hunger not real hunger. Hungry for emotional reasons, hungry out of habit (meal time, snack time, what you’re doing), hungry to eat because others are, etc. You may find a therapist helpful as you work through these early stages (because it does get better & easier). Many find the support of a therapist helpful as they work through the relationship with food, why they ate, habits around eating, etc. Please, please stick to your plan. There are about 12inches of sutures & stables holding your tummy together. The staged return to eating is to protect your tummy while it is healing, and ensure your recovery goes smoothly. I know you have eaten off plan already but you just may have been lucky so far. It’s only for a few weeks. You can do this. Look at your children & think about why you chose to have the surgery.

    Stalls suck

I stalled at 6 months for about 9 weeks it was awful but i stuck to the program and the weight started to come off again. Just saw my surgeon and I am no longer in the obese category, overweight and I quote my Dr. "not by much" I need to lose about 25 more LBS. I know it will be much slower now but i am sticking with it. You will start to lose again don't give up!
  7. Hey Lipman how goes it? I lose 2-3 lbs a week down 30 lbs since surgery 32 to go Surgery date 5/15 Take care and very proud of you

    Stalls suck

I lost 16 lbs the first *month*, so you're losing it faster than I am, and we started out about the same weight. So many things affect your rate of weight loss, many of which you have no control over. If you stick to your clinic's plan, the weight will come off, whether fast or slow. I was a slow loser from the get-go, and I ended up two years later having lost 235 lbs (which was 100% of my excess weight). I gained about 20 lbs in year 3 (which is very common), but besides that, I've maintained my loss pretty well. Like you, I also lost a bunch of weight before surgery - and that's one of the factors that'll influence who quickly you lose it, at least during the first month or so. Most of the weight people lose the first month is water weight, and since you lost 49 lbs before surgery, that water weight was long gone by the time they rolled you into the operating room (same with me...). So don't worry - the weight WILL come off as long as you stick to your clinic's plan.

most people have their first stall sometime during the first month after surgery, so you're actually a bit late to the party! So yes - early stalls are very common! it's been several years since I had surgery, so someone not as far out can probably answer your question about portion sizes, but as far as stretching your stomach, that doesn't happen - from what I understand, you'd have to overeat day after day after day for that (and i've also heard that the whole stomach-stretching thing is a myth - so I'm not sure which is correct - but suffice it to say, your stomach probably isn't going to stretch). Your stomach capacity is bigger now than it was right after surgery, though, because the swelling has gone down - but it's still pretty small now!

It’s actually a bar between the heel the rest of the sole. Makes it a little more stable @ms.sss. I think I forgot about them as they became too small for me when I put on the 15 menopause kilograms. I kept them because they are so beautiful & special (are a runway shoe & were supposed to be the last of the YSL branding before they went to just SL but then they ended up using both logos.) I think the last time I wore them was to a wedding too. Four hours for the extensions 😱 I would have been over it at two. Plus I would have been in pain from my my bony butt. 😁 Oh yeah Hemsworth & Cavill make every day beautiful @GreenTealael. ❤️❤️❤️ So yummy to look at. Not happy they dropped Henry but was very happy when they said we want you back. How could they then change their minds & dump him again. I mean WTF? Just awful way to treat someone. Damn James Gunn & his ‘vision’ for DC. My godson did a yoga course in Byron Bay a couple of years ago & attended classes with Elsa Pataky. Unfortunately Chris never came but I’m claiming 3 degrees of separation 😆😆😆 Looks like a fun evening with the family @GreenTealael. (Love the comparison with the WWF - LOL!.) Do they do they serve medieval style foods & tankards of ale too?
  11. I am 7 weeks post opt and have most restrictions removed with the exception of bread/ rice / beef/ pork. I’m worried about stretching my stomach. Around how much lean protein are you having per meal along with carb/veg? Anyone get weight loss stalls at this stage? I notice the scale has barely moved the last 10 days.

You got this! It's a process. A marathon. But it's totally worth it. I'm almost 8 weeks since having surgery, so the post op stuff is still really fresh. Even now, I would do it all again.

    JUNE SURGERY BUDDIES

Hi everyone, I have been dealing with severe constipation (third week since surgery). I did a bit of research and found something that is actually working for me, it is called Fiberex, it is basically concentrated prune juice with fiber. I tastes like concentrated sweet prune juice. I drink one little scoop (comes with it) in the evening and everything is fine the second day. I do not know if it will work for others but I thought I should let everyone know. Of course, before you start it, please consult your medical professional. I was just sick of taking other pharmaceutical products and tried to find something natural. Also, I put together a list of veggies, legumes that have high amount of protein and that might help you when you start incorporating them in your diet. Please see below. I hope this helps some of you. Edamame 1 cup 18.46 grams protein Lentils 1cup 17.86 grams protein Pinto beans 1 cup 15.41 grams protein Garbanzo beans 1 cup 14.53 grams protein Fava beans 1 cup 12.92 grams protein Lima beans 1 cup 11.58 grams protein Green peas 1 cup 8. 58 grams protein Quinoa 1cup 8.14 grams protein Spinach 1 cup 5.3 grams protein Collard greens 1 cup 5.1 grams protein Artichokes 1 cup 4.8 grams protein Avocado 1 cup 4.6 grams protein Asparagus 1 cup 4.3 grams protein Mushrooms 1 cup 4 grams protein https://www.healthline.com/health/food-nutrition/19-high-protein-vegetables#14.-Chia-seeds https://bcbstnews.com/bluehealthsolutions/10-most-protein-packed-vegetables/
  15. I will add a little math to the equation here: You lost a bunch of weight pre-diet, of which, a very large portion of was water weight. Once you get past that, it can be broken down into a simple calories in - calories out (this is too simplified, but it will get the job done). I went to a website (https://www.garnethealth.org/news/basal-metabolic-rate-calculator) and made some random assumption as your gender/age/etc, and got a resting metabolic rate of just over 3100. Add on another 900 for activities during the day and you are at a nice round 4000 calories burned each day. If your intake is around 600 calories in, then you are at a 3400 calorie deficiency. A pound of fat is roughly 3600 calories, so everyday you should be losing 3400/3600 ~ .95 pounds. So just under a pound a day. That being said, water and other factors can make this fluctuate day to day. Also, all of these numbers are averages and vary from person to person. So if you are noticing less, then maybe your BMR is a little lower than 3100. I was at 307.6 the day of my surgery, and 285.1 3 weeks out or 22.5 pounds down. Since then, I have been consistenly loosing about .6 pounds per day. Not every day, but on average. Stick with the diet your doctor/nutritionist gave you and give it some time. It takes 12-18 months for all of that weight to come off.

Hi ChewChew! I, too, am told to do the 2 week liquid diet x2 weeks to shrink the liver. They are also doing a liver biopsy on me at that time while my surgeon is there (well, plus I have liver dx.). You're right about everyone having such different plans. Interesting. I wish you all the best! And congratulations to you as well! 💟

Hi Aimee! I have surgery one week after you. We have some things in common. I, too, worked in healthcare. I retired from nursing many years ago to get my degree in counseling. So LOTS of research on surgery options...for years. It's finally good to move forward. I have two friends who had the sleeve almost 2 years ago. Watching their incredible journey is inspiring. I start my liquid diet on July 13th (x2 weeks). I'll look forward to hearing about your progress. Feel free to reach out. Hopefully we'll be back here to share our wonderful experience. 😊 I'm excited, too. I'm a young-ish grandma (62), and I'd like to have my health reverse in as many ways as possible. I wish you well!
  18. I went into this doing a ton of research. I knew to expect the week 2 or 3 stall. But man does it suck when your experiencing it. I haven't got the scale to move in about six days and it just feels so discouraging. I'm only 16 days out from surgery and I know there's so many new things my body is trying to adjust to. I just feel so bummed right now. All the hormonal changes aren't helping with that either. Ugh I cant wait to get past this little plateau.

    Metfomin

I was put on metformin, when I was diagnosed with diabetes, several years ago. It worked well. It improved my blood sugars. In addition to taking metformin, I started the keto diet. I lost 62 pounds in about 3 months. Of note, I started having hair loss. I don't know if it was the metformin, the diet, or the weight loss, but that's when I started losing my hair. I stayed on the metformin until the day of my surgery. The hair loss continued, even though I had stopped the keto diet and regained a bunch of weight.
  20. I managed to go to a conference all of last week and still have energy to hit the Disney parks in the evenings. I had 20k+ steps every day. I wasn't afraid of not fitting in rides (even the kiddie ones), I didn't feel like people were looking at me and judging me, and I managed to loose a few pounds even with the crappy food provided (kids menu were just fast food and at sit down restaurant massive 4oz of steak, 20 baby potatoes and half a head of broccoli)
  21. well this thread got hijacked/derailed...sorry @omrhsn. also sorry that anyone felt singled out, thats a sucky feeling. a further sorry that the intent and execution of this thread by most folks has obviously rubbed some in a really bad way. thats a sucky feeling too. looks like we got a agreement to disagree so lets move on, shall we? ....did i mention that i have this ongoing problem about finding a nice underwire bra that actually fits? i have regular sized boobs for my frame, but a small-ish torso circumference. i often end up with a band that rides up in the back even on smallest hook, OR my boobs swish around in a too-big cup. OR the get squished out and overflow up top and on the sides in a too-small cup. Fun Times. i often go boob-commando. ..,oh and i went to a buffet again last night (don't ask..starts with my wacko BFF showing up at my place unannounced and ends with AYCE sushi). i still stand by my dislike of buffets. i paid $47.99 CDN (plus tax!) to eat 4 peices of so-so tuna sashimi, 1/3 an over-riced Unagi handroll, and 1 oily sweet potato tempura slice. So yeah, its a problem/issue for me to justify spending over $50 on something not even that great, that would cost $15-20 at a much, much tastier restaurant.

Welcome, @DeeLCee! You made me think. I hope to bypass that buyers remorse and replace it with gratefulness, at least that's what I'm telling myself. But I realize this is all new and we're in the process of changing our mindset. I haven't begun packing up clothes yet. My surgery is in late July. I wasn't planning to discard of my current sizes until after surgery. I imagine myself trying on clothes and hoping they no longer fit,,,and then remove them from my closet. I think that will bring much satisfaction. But that's me. I can also understand the desire to take the time now to clean out the closet. As my surgery date gets closer I may want to start getting rid of things. 🤷‍♀️ I'm still trying to wrap my mind around smaller sizes. I haven't put too much thought into that since my main motivator is getting the surgery to improve my health. Getting into smaller sizes will certainly be the bonus, and I should start getting excited about that! Those are my thoughts. I wish you all the best on your surgery - you're a week before me. 😊 💟

    JUNE SURGERY BUDDIES

Hi I am three days post op- heading into the fourth. The first 24 hours was rough to be honest. I took hours to come around from being knocked out. I was drugged to the eyeballs which helped a lot. I did regurgitate water for the first 30 hours which was a little frightening and unexpected but was told it was totally normal. I got home yesterday. I was fine moving about and actually drove myself home. I went to bed afterwards a few times as I am still a little tired and not getting a full amount of sleep. Honestly though no pill or drug is as good as the one you get when you walk back through your own door. I’ve seen some people say they feel a bit down afterward. I haven’t had this. I don’t regret this at all. It was a conscious decision for me and my health and honestly I would do it again. I am on two weeks of liquids at the moment and finding it difficult to get most in but doing my best so happy enough. Each day I have improved.

Pre-op diet for revision starts on the 22nd!!

I like Premier banana cream ready made shakes, Premier caffe latte ready made shakes, Fairlife chocolate ready made shakes, Atkins chai ready made shakes, SlimFast mocha cappuccino ready made shakes (all shakes are protein shakes and some also have fiber). I like chicken, beef, and veggie bone broths (and I add corresponding bouillon cubes to deepen flavors). I like sugar free popsicles (tropical flavor). I like the blue protein gatorade. I like Premier peach protein water and also their tropical punch protein water. And I like sugar free protein puddings (specifically banana and chocolate ones). That's going to get me through my 1 week pre-op liquid diet and my 2 week post-op liquid diet (that's how long my doctor has us do it).
  25. @Neka87 every POUND counts. Be patient with yourself. Im 5 weeks post surgery THANK GOD im doing well. Yes sipping on something warm will make you feel better. I've been doing that since I came home from the hospital & I truly believe that's what helped me GREATLY!
