  1. Just had my sleeve by Dr. Nick. Had a great experience! Baylor Plano was a great facility and I have had more than my share of operations, the nurses were great and happy (sounds weird but a happy nurse is so much better all else equal). I didn't need a revision, so don't know what his requirements would be, go to one of his information seminars and talk to him. He is very approachable. I had an UGI pre-op due to hiatal hernia.

    April 2014 sleevers

I am scheduled for April 10th! Band to Sleeve revision
  3. What prompted most people to do the revision surgery?
  4. The band didn't perform up to advertised / reported specs. Ended up with some minor issues and struggled to keep the weight off. Revised to Bypass, dropped the rest of my weight and have kept it off for over a year now. Coming up on 2 years post revision in March.
  5. I am considering having a revision now due to weight gain during pregnancy. I didn’t gain back all my weight. 50 lbs out of the 117 I lost but I have been dieting for months and it’s just not coming off.

    SLEEVE TO BYPASS REVISION

Well I am now 10 days post op GS revision to RNY..... That was a real trip. I had it done at Cleveland clinic Florida and they were excellent there. The worst part of my entire journey so far was that darn JP drain. Since it was my second abdominal Surgery I had to go home with one for two weeks. After a week I developed a reaction on my skin so I had to travel back and get it removed. What a relief that was. Other than that and of course the gas pains the rest was tolerable as long as I had appropriate pain meds. I am 17 pounds down from my presurgery weight. Today I got to start soft dairy. Cottage cheese never tasted so good. I have had absolutely no nausea (yet) I start soft protein on 8/10. Can't wait to taste something meaty for a change. Good luck to all. I will let you know how it goes.

    SLEEVE TO BYPASS REVISION

Hey. I'm having my sleeve to bypass revision next Wednesday, July 29. I was sleeved in February 2013. I lost about 40 pounds and kept it off for a year when I was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation and was started on a beta blocker. I gained 20 pounds the first month and it has just gone up since then. My insurance said only one bariatric surgery per lifetime however I decided to try to have it approved and they approved it within two days. The insurance company considered my failed sleeve a complication as well as my new heart condition and borderline sleep apnea. I thought for sure I would have to appeal the denial but was happily surprised. So if your insurance states one bariatric surgery in a lifetime, try to get it approved anyhow. You may be pleasantly surprised. I have completed all my preop requirements and I started my diet today. Has anybody gone through this and are you glad that you did this? My biggest fear is not the surgery itself but being a failure again. It's so embarrassing. I am telling very few people I'm having RNY. They all think I'm having a hiatal hernia repair. I would appreciate your thoughts. Thank you.

    SLEEVE TO BYPASS REVISION

Hi everyone! I was also revised from the sleeve to RNY. My initial surgery was 8/12/13. I almost immediately began having problems getting fluids to stay down. After episodes of daily nonstop vomiting and dehydration, I was admitted to the hospital on 8/22. I was NPO for most of my hospital stay. I couldn't even keep ice chips down. After a failed attempt of a balloon dilation, my surgeon went back in on 8/31 to correct my sleeve. I woke up in excruciating pain that evening. My heart rate was extremely high during the night. The nurses were very concerned. My surgeon came in that morning and told me that he needed to go back in to check for a leak. After 6 hours of surgery, I was revised from the sleeve to RNY due to a small leak in my sleeve. I've been doing much better since the revision. I'm hopeful that things will work out with my new pouch. Just nervous about dumping. But, I'm taking things one day at a time. :-) -Candace
  9. It's not half, its 85%. I love my sleeve, have not had any complications, have reached 100% EWL and rock the 100 staples. I eat what I want, in moderation. I have never puked, I never had to visit the Doc for maintenance (except to check my labs... all good). Everyone has to do what they feel is right for them. If you are afraid of cutting out half your stomach, and getting 100 staples, then don't do it. Who could blame you. Personally, I think the size of my stomach was part of my problem, so saying goodbye to it was more of a relief than sad. It may be part of your problem too, and thats why you are looking at WLS, which all reduce the size of your stomach somehow. After years of trying to work my regular stomach to lose weight unsuccessfully, I was looking for a permanent solution, and with a lot of work on my side, with support, exercise, and daily accountability I think I might just make it work for the long haul. Without revision. Fingers crossed.

    Need Mental Change

I had the same concerns when I started this process, this will be revision surgery for me because the lap band did not work for me....when I was in my psy consult I told her my concerns and she agreed that my concerns were valid and I should seek therapy, so I found a therapist and she has been great...she has already helped me and I've only had 2 sessions with her....when I told my friends who have also had WLS they just told me you can get the same thing reading a book....and I told them, I need someone who will have a verbal exchange with me, and a book cant do that... I would encourage you to seek a therapist...
  11. Unfortunately you will not find a plan that will cover it in Texas thru the affordable care act (obama care) I have done lots of research on this specifically because here in Florida its also excluded... These are the states where its covered. Your option would be to move to one of these states temporarily, Establish residency, get healthcare, get your surgery and leave. If you notice most southern states are excluded because people in southern states tend to be overweight when compared to northern states. (according to multiple articles i read about bariatric surgery. This is my backup if i end up needing a revision is to move. South Dakota seems to be the easiest from the research i did.
  12. I think for the most part, the diet we follow post-surgery (whether sleeve or bypass) is what is known as protein-prioritized keto (there's a FB group if you are interested). Keep protein high, fats low to moderate, and carbs low. In fact, I really don't understand the (traditional keto) focus on high fat since the reason most people lose weight is because of low carbs. And of course protein is better for you than fat. That said, some people may be more sensitive to fatty foods after bypass (I just had a bypass revision myself and this is something I'm concerned about). I would talk to your doctor/nutritionist to see what they think.

    Failure

Hi everyone its so good to read your stories! Im having a band to bypass revision on 19th April and I'm scared as hell!!! I had initial success with the band in 2009 but by 20011 i was in and out of emergency like a revolving door. What a nightmare. I thought it was me all along. But now i know it was really the band as it has proven to be a pretty useless device long term. I lost weight by starving myself. Couldnt eat a nice healthy salad. .only sloppy foods..... So now that im going with the bypass im so afraid that i wont be successful and also that ill be destined to a life of yoghurt and sloppy foods. An people who have had the bp please tell me what and how they eat now...at varying stages post surgery? Im hoping that a year down the track i can eat a healthy salad and a piece of fish? Or some grilled meat and steamed vegetables? I couldnt do that with the band. I spent half my life vomitting and the other half starving! Alo, is it true that you lose your appetite...because thats what im really looking forward to! Sent from my GT-I9505 using the BariatricPal App
  14. Your metabolism re adjusts about 18-24 months. You basically have that amount of time to get used to eating right! I worry about banders. Your metabolism should do the same , kinda slows down, so what happens when the band comes off!!!! Is that why, when band problems happen , people need to get revisions! ?

    BCBS Federal..

I don't have BCBS, but most insurance companies usually require at least a 40 BMI and at least one co-morbidity confirmed, like diabetes, sleep apnea, or high blood pressure. Maybe some might do a 35 BMI? But I do know that a family history isn't enough. I'm actually looking at getting a revision so I have the joy of going through it again.

Why did you want to revise from sleeve to bypass? I had horrible reflux and unsatisfactory weight loss. I had taken the medicine to reduce acid for so long I was having side effects from it. I have not had one episode of reflux since my surgery. Thank you Dr. Illan.
  17. Hi everyone. Here's a bit of my background Lapband done April 2011 Only lost 40 lbs Went in for revision to sleep Nov 5, 2016 And they were only able to take my band out Since it had slipped I needed time to recover. Friday is my surgery, and I decided to go bypass instead of sleeve. I'm very nervous, about dumping and feeling like I'm starving. Plus I'm a very thirsty person and I can chug a bottle of Water lol, so the sipping is going to be a huge adjustment. Anyone else having surgery in January, what day? And what surgery you getting? I'd love to have some fellow BariatricPal friends to embark on this new journey with! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    January Surgeries

I am being revised from a sleeve to bypass on the 23rd
  19. Hi guys, one week out from lap band revision to sleeve. I'm doing ok pain-wise, but I'm just so weak and even getting up off the couch to walk across the room makes me feel like I've sprinted. I was checked by my doctor and spent the day in the ER doing cat scans for blood clots, EKG, blood work. Everything was normal. But I am definitely not. I'm fine if I'm sitting on the couch, but moving around, even to prepare the small meals has got me exhausted. Is this normal? Is it due to taking in so few calories? What am I doing wrong? Yes, I'm taking my vitamins and meeting protein and mostly meeting liquids goals. I'm on Lovenox as a preventative for blood clots.
  20. Some good news: I got a surgery date! I'm having my band-to-bypass revision on August 24th! They only gave me about 3 weeks notice, so I've been running around like a chicken with it's head cut off, trying to get all my clearances done. I got my labwork, chest xray, and cardiology clearance done this past Thursday, I have my pulmonology clearance scheduled for Tuesday, and my education class on Wednesday! I'm so excited! I've been trying to get everything in order for surgery, since my mom is flying down to stay with me. I've ordered all of my pre-op Vitamins (even though I don't have to start them for 6 weeks), a zip-front soft bra for leaving the hospital, and I'm going to go buy some more Premier Protein shakes at costco this week (they're on sale!), and I'm trying to get my apartment as clean and organized as possible.
  21. Did you have your surgery on 3/27?? I'm scheduled for 6/20... I'm having a revision from the sleeve to the DS... how did things go for you?

    plastic surgery

About two years after being banded, I had a panniculectomy with rectus muscle repair. I had a complication (one of those resistant infections--had to be readmitted and on IV antibiotics for about ten days), but I was MO at the time and the supervising surgeon told me that the complication rate for that surgery on an MO patient is 100%. A year later, still MO, I had a breast reduction and he tweaked the panniculectomy a little to remove dog ears. My "wisdom" such as it is, is that the belly probably could have waited, had I been in search of perfection. What I went for at the time was relief from that hangy thing. But I'm glad I didn't wait for the boobs. It is NOT a painful surgery and the recovery goes pretty fast (all things considered) and I think I can get by with what I have even when I lose more weight. Also, I went to our daughter's (she wore a 36-J bra) PS for the boobs and the panniculectomy revision. I told him I didn't want to look like Paris Hilton, I wanted a more Rubenesque shape. He "got" that and had no problem doing the surgery on someone who was not at any "goal" weight. Good luck with this!

September 11Th Kaiser - Dr. Zane

Oh congratulations! Where are you having your surgery? Had pre-ops today and met with my doctor. I am a revision and he did say that if the scar tissue is really bad, he would remove the band, but I would have to wait a year to be sleeved. Hoping and praying everything is good and I will come out of surgery bandless, portless, and sleeved! Sunnymama10, are you on a pre-op diet? I was told to continue normal eating until 24 hours prior to surgery. Then it is full liquids and then nothing to eat or drink after midnight.
  24. I had a band in 2006. Lost about 40 pounds and was doing ok with it. Bnad slipped in 2014. Was removed and rebanded Jan 2014. I Ive had nothing but misery with 2nd band! Gained almost 15 pounds since 2014. Nausea, food getting stuck, port pinching. Im going for consult to revise from band to sleeve. My current BMI is only 31 though. Wondering if insurance will decline? Im now pre-diabetic, along with severe sleep apnea and other comorbidities that qualified me for the band to begin with. Did you experience any problems with approval?
  25. I am a revision.... However, not by choice I must say! I can't speak as to what's different from the sleeve experience because my sleeve was so messed up that the 4.5 months I had it I couldn't eat or drink anything. It kind of stinks that you have to go through it all over again (surgery...adding foods back...) I don't have dumping but I do think I became lactose intolerant (many are after RNY). I haven't had much dairy to check it out. According to my surgeon revisions need to be extremely cautious of anything that could cause ulcers because we are extra prone to getting them. We also have a much higher rate of stricture (I had a pretty severe one). Also, if something were to happen to our pouches, we don't have any stomach left to help fix the problem. I don't want to be a wet towel by any means! I'll answer any questions you have that I can.
