  1. Hi all, I had surgery three years ago. At the end of 2019, I had an adjustment as I was experiencing some discomfort and reflux. There's currently very little restriction and I've put on about 12 pounds in isolation. Here's the thing. The same week I had an adjustment I also moved to Cambodia, which is essentially a third world. So far, I haven't been able to find a bariatric surgeon here. I also can't travel to nearby Thailand due to Covid-19. With that in mind, has anyone done an adjustment themselves? I understand it's not ideal, but I can purchase saline and a syringe from any pharmacy, whereas I won't be able to see a surgeon for at least a few more months. Any advice would be appreciated. I lost 155lbs and need some help continuing my journey.

    Effect on Anti-Depressants??

I worry about that, too. I’m on a combo of meds to treat my OCD. I’m on an anti-depressant and an anti-psychotic that keeps the intrusive thoughts away. I worry about having to discontinue them for surgery and having a really rough time. Luckily for me, I’m just barely getting this all started, and I can work with my psych nurse and the bariatric surgeon and figure out what the best course of action is. I’m pretty useless without my medication.

    Effect on Anti-Depressants??

I was nervous about that too, but it's all been okay. I didn't take them the morning of the surgery or the next day, but started up again the following day. My doctor knew they weren't chewable and that I had to swallow them whole and he was fine with that. Some of the really strict limitations, I think, apply more to the other bariatric surgeries. Not saying that it's okay to not follow the rules, but the sleeve doesn't seem to create some of the same issue with absorbing medications.

    Colonoscopy

after bariatric surgery it took me 1 hour each to finish a glass.. almost 9 hours to finish the jug... that is a real horror story lol..

    Colonoscopy

i had my second colonoscopy in a year time.. the first colon prep was before bariatric surgery it was easier and lasted shorter .. after bariatric surgery it took me about 8 hours to finish off the prep... the prep is always the worst part of a colonoscopy.. during the colonoscopy your asleep and wake up after..the results had a few small polyps and they told me i did not have to come back for 5 years whoooooooo....
  6. i use to use naproxen a few times a week prior to bariatric surgery .. now i pick and choose when i really need it after my sleeve surgery.. i only have used it 2 or 3 times in a year...
  7. I just got off of the phone with my gastroenterologist. She told me that my hiatal hernia is still there with significant inflammation. She also told me because of my history of reflux (even though it’s not really that bad), she does not recommend getting the sleeve. She said it WILL get significantly worse and I’d likely have to have another surgery to convert to RNY because of it. She is sending a referral to the leading bariatric surgery group in my area, so now I am waiting to hear from them! I hope I get going on this sooner than later.
  8. Let's make it true. All I can currently think about are those chocolate almond coconut balls sold in bulk at Costco. My brain keeps thinking "Not yet but soon." and I keep saying "mmmm.no. Not so soon." One day at a time is my motto. Happy Graduation to 3 months! I want to speed up time, for sure. Made a smoothie with greek yogurt and half a banana (which is NOT on my ok list but seems to be on other people's) and some unsweetened chocolate Almond milk. It was good and seems to be settling ok even with my Bariatric One a Day multi taken with it. I'm calling this a win!

    keeping track

I count all of that, but for the first few months, I just counted water, protein, and I weighed/measured food (I still do all that -- but after about the year mark, I started counting calories and fitness, too). I use sparkpeople, but that's an old one that most bariatric patients don't use anymore - most use something like My Fitness Pal. I never switched over because I've been using sparkpeople for several years, so all my records are in it from way back (even before I had WLS). If I was just starting today, though, I'd probably use a phone app like My Fitness Pal.
  10. Yeah I watched the online seminar video and he said that he does lap band, too. I know that when I started researching surgery options it was the one that turned me off absolutely. The sleeve and RNY sound so much better in reality. When he was listing the complications of all 3, the lap band said stuff like strangulated stomach...and I’m like...Say what now? No thanks! Thanks! Yeah I’m reading that this day and age there are significantly less complications with any bariatric surgery (specifically the sleeve and RNY). When I was a kid, one of my friends mom had “stomach stapling” done, and ultimately it ended up killing her somehow. I don’t remember the details, I was 8 or 9. All I remember is she got super thin and had complications the entire time. But keep in mind this was the late 80s or very early 90s. I am aware that with anything, as time passes we learn more about everything, and the procedures become easier to do and easier to recover from. I’ve had two C-sections, so I’m imaging recovery might be similar in ways, and not in others. My first C-section was pretty miserable after they tried inducing labor for 2.5 days. The second one, I went straight into surgery, no inducing. So recovery was quick with my second. By the 3rd day I was ready to go!
  11. I’m not sure that there are any one-size fits-all solutions in terms of changes to make outside of the basic top ten guidelines listed by every single WLS surgeon, manual, book, and website. Those top ten are a given, based upon the outcomes of hundreds of thousands of bariatric patients. Beyond following those basics, each person is going to discover, over time, an individual approach that’s based entirely upon their genetics, personality, and history – plus current relationship – with food and eating. This is why I love what summerset said about abandoning a fixed mindset and embracing a growth mindset. Obesity is a lifelong disease that is treated, but not cured, by WLS, so there needs to be ongoing evaluation and readjustment in order to keep the disease in remission. In practical terms, what this means to me is that to be successful for life, I’ll need to frequently evaluate what I’m doing to determine what’s working and what isn’t. Obviously I’ll need to continue doing the things that work, i.e. the bariatric top ten. But equally important is examining what’s not working, determining what all the contributing factors are, then evaluating my actions based on those factors and figuring out the adjustments needed in order to make the that shift so that the treatment continually evolves with the circumstances of my life at any given point in time. So: ongoing frequent evaluations, then adapting, adjusting, and pivoting as necessary. What those changes and tweaks are will be different for everyone.
  12. Hi there! I’m 38 years old in Central California. Married to my absolute best friend with the most awesome little dudes (ages 4 and 2). I’ve battled with my weight my entire life. No joke, my mom put me on my first diet in the 3rd grade, which likely set off the years of self hatred and body shaming. About 6 years ago I was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia (via endoscopy), and as of late it’s really gotten significantly worse. I just had another endoscopy on Tuesday and I am awaiting results. Anyhow, since my gastroenterologist suggested I might consider bariatric surgery, as that’s the only way they will repair the hiatal hernia at my current weight (304.6)...it’s all I can think about and am doing as much research as I can. I also signed up for an online seminar at the bariatric office at my local hospital. They do three surgeries at the hospital, lap band, sleeve, and gastric bypass. I’m leaning toward the sleeve, but honestly I just don’t know which is the best option (I don’t want to do lap band, just because I’ve read that it’s not as effective at losing weight). Anyhow, can you tell me a little about your experiences with sleeve or bypass. I only know two people that have had bariatric surgery, and they both have glowing reviews... But I know it’s not all sunshine and lollipops for everyone. Thanks in advance!

    Pre Op diet

Idk if they're on Bariatric pal, but premier protein shakes are pretty good. They've never had a weird taste to me. (atkins, slimfast some of fairlife's make me pretty sick) Quest protein are also pretty good if you can find them. One that I've found that's also good is Fairlife High Protein shake in Vanilla. It tastes like melted ice cream. I like to pour it over some chilled decaf Chai Tea to make a chai tea latte/type drink. it's nice and sweet without the calories of a reg drink.

In Limbo (not the fun kind)

Thanks for the advice, guys. I ended up having my second cardiology appointment today (it was scheduled for an hour after my original surgery was scheduled.. the irony) but the doctor was sympathetic and super awesome. He was knowledgeable about my condition and cleared me for surgery. He saw where my heart was functionally okay to withstand surgery. He was really excited about my case and gave me some good information and wants to follow up with me. I think it was good that I got all this info because it gives me more faith in doctors where I live and I think I have a solid cardiologist now.. which is awesome bc I guess I'll be needing heart surgery in the next 10 years or so. Honestly, I've thought about going to mexico, but I don't have anyone who would travel with me so that is kind of out. I would travel by myself but you can't do that. I do love traveling and wouldn't care to try the medical tourism because I feel like the insurance nonsense is so horrible. I've seen some amazing transformations (not bariatrics) from Japan and they take great pride in their work and you don't have to go for follow up after follow up like you do in the states. I'm on the hook for $900 for pre-op testing.. which sucks because I thought my insurance would cover that.. but in the end, it's all for my health.

    Vitamins and Nausea

Thanks for your insight! I tried my gummy vitamins that I took prior to my sleeve and didn’t have any nausea. I guess I just can’t take the Bariatric ones at this stage. I’m sticking to the gummies for now!

    Obsessing about Plastic Surgery!!

I’ve not updated but just got around to checking my tablet and emails. I’m here for eight days. But I trust if the doctor didn’t think I was ready he would postpone. He is going to follow up via video to monitor my incisions. But he he a stickler for perfection and I trust him with my life. I live closer to Miami but costs were a challenge. I chose the Hospital BC in Mexico. From surgery in Miami? Seems strange to me. I had my issues due to my medical circumstances. But the doctor has been nothing short of excellent. I know it’s naviating something i have never done. But Hospital BC has a certificate of excellence, is the only American own hospital in Tijuana Mexico. The nurses and staff have worked hard. As has the doctor. Dr.Ampulia went above and beyond to ensure things went well. Despite my physical challenges. my surgery was Monday after 3pm he wanted to ensure I was ready and well for the procedures.mit was a very long surgery. I only remember getting into my room after midnight. I was a bit sick from anesthesia but I’m very susceptible to that. The next day I didn’t follow the normal process. So I was bedbound until this morning. Which my doctor knew my issues and what a struggle this was for me to come this far.and and to be this trusting. I gave permission to share my before and after photos. Which I never thought I’d do. But it felt important. They do bariatric surgery as well as plastics for bariatric patients. I had a exhausting day but the staff work so hard. I got on my feet which is hard doing the hunch walk. Got showered and into Faja. I get a daily lymphatic massage post op until I leave. As for navigating certain things while wearing Faja if anyone has tips please feel free to share 🤣 sorry if it’s TMI but how do you poop with this on? Iive got a body suit type garment short legs, bottom up to under bust with shoulder straps. I felt bad for the lady struggling to get it on me. It’s got a kind of cutout but it doesn’t seem sanitary and isn’t open enough, maybe needs readjustment? I didn’t think of everything ... you can’t really. You just know that you pick a place you trust. I do worry about traveling home but they say I’ll adjust as time goes on. i do wonder what the time frame is. From people that have had it for standing more upright, I’m a little worried navigating the airport and trip home. But still have until Sunday but it’s a very early morning flight. and yes I’m alive. Just need to keep changing positions and try to get up to walk when I can.

    June 2020 surgeries

I am allows those too, was just reporting that a reknown Bariatric surgeon had said his patients had a harder time with scrambled eggs that fried/poached - so I mentioned I hoped that was not the case with me (and since I found it very interesting).
  18. I’m having a revision from sleeve to bypass on July 5th. I had a hard time with protein shakes when I had the sleeve, they tasted so chalky. Can anyone recommend protein shakes from Bariatric Pal that are good and not chalky tasting?

    B12

After surgery I would take a normal bariatric vitamin after getting pregnant I started the one for pregnancy bariatric patients and now my b12 is really high it’s 1354 pg/ml. Has anyone had the issue of it being to high?
  20. Thank you on the congrats. The baby was my deciding factor in choosing to go through with Bariatric surgery. I want to be able to run after my grand baby! I ended up telling my daughter to have her best friend in charge with me as the secondary person. So it looks like that will be the case.
  21. Bariatric surgery appears to alter the gut microbiota in many of the same ways that a fecal transplant does. Though the pathomechanisms for this are not yet completely understood, what is known is that it increases Escherichia coli (which is correlated with leptin levels) and Faecalibacterium prausnitzii (which reduces inflammatory markers) due to the starvation-like state in the immediate post-op period. There’s a lot of exciting research in this field right now that looks promising in terms of future treatment possibilities for obesity and morbid obesity.
  22. What ms.sss said. From what I've read, it's pretty common for body dysmorphia to reverse after bariatric surgery. When I gained 110 lbs in 2 years and went from being average weight to morbidly obese, I went through the exact same thing. No matter what women look like, we tend to judge ourselves critically 😥 New outfits—particularly in colours and silhouettes I never would/could have worn when I was MO—definitely are helping me accept and learn to appreciate what I see in the mirror now. But I still purchase everything (online) in duplicate: 8's plus one larger size, usually a 12, "just in case" the 8's are suddenly somehow too small 😶

    July 2020 Surgery anyone?

IWantTheDream.. I did not have Barrett’s before the sleeve. I had GERD and it went away for about the first 3 years after surgery. Then it slowly came back and turned into Barrett’s even while on Omeprazole everyday the whole time. It got so bad that I was sleeping in a recliner. My Dr added Carafate before bed at night and that helps. But my goal is to stop the Barrett’s from progressing into cancer now. If you have reflux or GERD do your research and talk to your doctor. And yes, we live very close to one another! I switched doctors for this surgery. I used to use one in East Brunswick and now I am using Dr Sadek , he is the chief of Bariatric surgery at Robert Wood Johnson in New Brunswick. I know Dr Borao is spoken highly of so you’re in good hands! 🤗
  24. Like a lot of people have mentioned, it mostly sounds like your gallbladder... Did the surgeon remove it, or did you keep it, because if they left it in, that's likely your issue. When my gallbladder went bad I had massive acid issues and was popping acid reducers almost like candy it felt like. I was getting sick with almost everything I ate and couldn't keep anything but liquid down and even then sometime I threw that up. I have tachycardia so I honestly don't know if it was made worse or not so I can't really help you on that. And, my stomach HURT so bad after I would eat it was insanely painful! It took them MONTHS to figure out it was my gallbladder because they kept thinking I had an ulcer. Anyway, I would still call your bariatric surgeon or another bariatric doctor and ask for their advice. Just to be safe.
